They probably should have used this as a portable bunker really, just drive there and wait! Maybe they could dig a hole and burry the tank in there with concrete and remove engines and stuff and make it a literal cannon bunker, they did something like this with old tanks and panther turrets, they construct a bunker underground and used the turret as a cannon. This was a tactic in berlin's last stand but usualy they did this with old and useless tanks.
There are 3 different modes the transmission/engines operate in. 1st is for the initial acceleration and climbing steep hills, 2nd for continued acceleration to get you to third as well as on rough terrain, and 3rd is simply for most of your driving. Running in 3rd is generally what you want to do, but doing such off road gives you about 10-11km/h at best. You can shove it back down into 2nd or even 1st to get it to speed again, however, this works the engines at full power. I decided to try it off road in a mix of 1st and 2nd to see how long it would last. About 8-10 minutes later and the driver and radio operators compartment was filling with smoke from the engines and smoke was pouring out the engine compartment up top. You CAN drive for quite a while, but if you want to, you're not going anywhere fast. You can use 1st and 2nd, but I'd consider them combat gears where you move a bit, stop, fire a bit, move again, and repeat or you will fry the engines and transmission. Took 10 minutes to get the engines to a reasonable state where I could move without it sounding like it was powered by cluster of dying cats.
@@traxel14 By Kill Ratio the Porsche Ferdinand/Elephant can’t be battled in the title. 89 Ferdinands were sent to the eastern front in tank hunter battalions, the Heeres Panzerjäger Abteilung 653 and 654. They were use to kill T-34 at FIVE! kilometers with ratio Kill:Loss of 10:1. The Ferdinands destroyed 320 T-34’s in Kursk at the loss of only 13 Panzerjägers. @@dedfingord33 I think the kill ratio is about correct, but they lost more Ferdinands than 13, most were to mechanical failures and mines. About 94 sent to Kursk/Orel battles, about half were destroyed. Of all tank destroyer numbers of tank kills, the Stug IIIs/IVs had more, over 20,000 allied vehicles were destroyed. the viewports in this game are so fascinating as they are not PIP textures but rather a texture that allows the tank / crew models to be hidden making for a perfect view and with no sacrifice on performance because of its use. other games have done this such as arma but it just a simple window with no magic texture so it looks much less impressive and ugly in comparison.
You know what’s crazy, this tank already struggled to go fast because of the underwhelming engine, and you know what the germans thought *”Lets give it a bigger gun”* and didn’t make the engine any more Reliable and workable and that was called the elephant. Just a Ferdinand but Bigger gun. I don’t know why the Germans used the P-tiger chassis. It was so underwhelming
Imagine being inside when the gun was fired. Bet it made your ears ring for days. Noticed the sound effects for the guns all sounds the same for every tank.
Ive been playing Sturmovik since it came out back in 01, i have played every incarnation of it, tanks, airplanes, gliders, you name it,sounds are not their cup of tea and every time someone has tried to help, the fanbois get quite indignant and run for the hills so thats that,on a real German fighter in WW2 when the cannons would fire the whole plane would shake, you definitely felt it and they were LOUD. Its always been a niche game so no money for any niceties, dont get me wrong, i love the game but the sounds have always been meh. Know what you mean about the gun and being inside,Ive always said i would love to , just once, be standing next to a 88 when it went off,no ear protection, just once, lol
They were used in a role that were not intended to be used as a break through tank. This was because Soviet defense's were so strong that they attempted to use this to break through them.
My favorite ww2 tank killer, Panzerjager Ferdinand AKA Elefant, i wonder how faithful the interior is to the real Mccoy? documentation on Elefants is not easy to come by, someday someone is going to write a really nice technical book on it,i have a few but they are scarce on info.
I'm not sure the 88mm on the Ferdinand could take out the SU 85 with a frontal impact at that range - (which wasn't introduced until August 1943), by which time the Ferdinands had been withdrawn from combat for modifications - including a new bow machine gun and zimmerit paste, so these two tanks never actually faced each other on the Eastern Front.

@@kaptainkrafter4130 And they also made _a lot_ of T-34s... so many that you can still buy surplus ones (demilitarised, of course) today for a little more than the cost of a new Honda Civic. I've heard that compared to a bunker the Ferdinand has an excelent mobility!
On the field-terrain all they was similar mobility, - 12-15 km/h. Ferdinand had electrotransmission

This panzer is a Ferdinand because it has the first type dome/door and lacks the MG in the front position
Im surprised your transmission didn’t fail and your tank caught fire just from driving

That Ferdinand is a beast of the battlefield.
