Wedding photographer here.... it’s ok to critique poses but some of these are people’s actual reactions (like the couple in the car with champagne) I doubt anyone is going to say “ look at that brides buck teeth” that’s just rude. There is a line between critiquing work/art and understanding what people’s natural reactions are/actual people in actual wedding photos.
I get that but I still appreciated his insight on how to direct people to get their best angles and best energy in the moment. I don't do wedding photography but it did sound like he's encountered a lot of judgmental clients looking through his portfolio and I would believe it too because I looked at his website and his wedding work is self described as "high fashion" and "fine art" it looks very dramatic and perfectionist and he's also working 45 minutes from LA. I wouldn't be surprised if between his style and location he simply attracts a lot of clients with "high standards." I think as an artist you're just going to attract certain type of people who are drawn to your style, his clients happen to be assholes.
The point isn't that they will SAY it, but that they will think it. From the standpoint of the photographer's portfolio, there shouldn't be any pictures where a customer thinks "I wouldn't want my teeth to look like that"
At 33:00 Pye went with the dignified "this is a very unflattering shot" versus Lee saying "unattractive clients" damn dude that's wedding photography. They're not models. They're living their lives ffs. I'd hope that my photographer can make me feel beautiful on the most important day of my life.
He literally said she has weird teeth, that’s not professional or even respectful. It’s one thing to critique a photographer, but to base your opinion of a wedding photo based on the attractiveness of the client is plain cruel
seriously. i had to replay that back to make sure I was hearing that right. I was wondering why he was giving me douche vibes since the beginning of the video.... Took until 32:39 to realize why. I would NEVER hire this guy simply based off of what he just said. The fact that he felt okay to say that and then STILL uploaded the video with that part is just amazing.
Wow. 33 minute mark, the comment “not the most attractive clients”, completely out of line. Unprofessional and hugely disrespectful. Especially when a child is involved. Do better.
Heather Boyd completely agree, my jaw dropped. There are some really amazing tips in this video but this wasn’t professional in the slightest. Saying it’s not the most flattering composition was far more appropriate and I agree, the shadows are hiding the brides teeth which isn’t ideal.
PyeJirsa Thankyou for responding. To be fair, my shock and anger was aimed at Lee rather than yourself. Your comments are generally tactful and helpful and about critiquing the photo. Unfortunately it seems to me that Lee is always focussed on the attractiveness of the model, which is just not cool.
16:40 I had to turn this critique off at this point because it became way too predictable. Also you couldn't like an image because of the scar on a brides shoulder?? Critiquing the photographers choice for leaving it in is so old fashioned. We shouldn't edit out scars unless the couple ask us to. And even then I would try to convince them to leave them in as they are inherently part of them now and should be appreciated and loved as much as any other part. When brides know you will edit out things like that they would surely also then start asking for teeth whitening and double chin removal and making arms smaller and waists thinner... these are things we should be avoiding like the plague because that's not how they looked on thay day! Aren't we just meant to record what happened to 2 real people?
@@rimurutempest3204 I honestly didn't get that far, I honestly switched it off at 16:40. I don't have a lot of spare time so when I do take time to watch things on UA-cam it has to be valuable to me, and THIS video was a complete joke. It's not like this video is on a website that clients wouldn't necessarily be interested in finding, this is on a public forum. Imagine if any of these couples in these images found this video!! So much in this video is what is wrong with the wedding AND photography industry.
@@cafecitocowboy Exactly. It makes me sad that photographers are still churning out these terrible attitudes towards their clients for not being perfect enough by continuously editing out their "bad parts", whether asked to or not, which only stands to make the receiver of the editing BELIEVE they do have bad parts! NO ONE has bad parts! We are just all different and those differences should be celebrated and admired. By editing away these flaws, either by request or not, we are inadvertently fuelling bad self-image for literally thousands of people out there. We should all be moving forward with the times.
The first photo doesn't look like she's experiencing what should be one of the happiest days of her life. Instead, it looks like she's headed for something dreadful, like an execution. The atmosphere is too dreary. It's a nice photo, just not a nice wedding photo.
I just hate the composition, she could stand a little bit more to the left, so that she would be in the center of the clock. Also as mentioned in the video, there could be some improvements made to the details.
Why would you photoshop out a scar? That scar may have some real meaning to her. Imperfections can be perfect, I would never PS out a scar , you have no right to do that
Rui Frias yes I know that. No photographer has the right to photoshop out a scar IMVHO. Ethically I think spots and bad skin for sure but not scars or moles etc that are part of the history of that person
Totally agree. Why even have the people in the photos. Just get models and photoshop their faces. But you have to remember these guys are all about SELL SELL SELL. Not only do I find wedding photography boring as fuck, but it also really just turns you into a constant salesman. Dealing with people that want illusions. No thanks.
I literally had this same reaction! If this is what it takes to be a professional photographer, seems a bit dehumanizing to critique this way and there’s just something about this video that was off putting. Like no thanks.
I like your constructive critique that focuses on the technical aspects of the photos. Other than that, things like the subject's teeth, clothing, scars and other body "defects" are totally unnecessary. As a photographer I aim to preserve natural elements of my subjects, except if they specifically request it be taken out. I want my clients to look like themselves on their special day and I like to capture them as who they are. Composing a shot to avoid a bride's "buck tooth" (that really isn't) is not fair to the bride. She looked gorgeous just they way she was captured. If future clients hate the way someone else's hand/body looks in their photos, then they have all the right to present themselves they way they want on THEIR wedding day. If you dont like you arm, please cover it up. You dont like your teeth? Then dont give me an open smile. Save us all from your self-hate and present yourself they way you want to be captured.
pye is destroying every Emotion. maybe he is a good photographer, but he misses the Thing. he wants to perfectize(?) every single Frame. sometimes the not perfect photo is the best
kyzee truthahn Well it depends on the clientele. For the people that can afford him, they like the perfect, heavily-posed pictures. If you want a photographer that’s less posey and more journalistic, hire Lee instead. Side note: ‘perfect’ in verb form is just ‘perfect’-the emphasis on how you pronounce it is just different. Noun = pERfect Verb = perfEct
No not every photo is the best but if you're submitting your best work, would you not want to pick the best photo you've got. You wouldn't submit the one that's just ok
You definately need to get Pye back on the chanel again. Some really great pointers I think everyone can learn from. I know im goinng to look at m work differently going forward. Keep up the great work.
Jesus this comment section has some fragile photographers lmao. The title says that it will be harsh, it's literally written out in caps. They're not here to make us feel all warm and fuzzy, they're here giving us free info to improve our work and make a better living. Get over yourselves.
Holy hell, this guy's eye was unreal. Literally everything he said I learned something. It was a rough critique but he was so insightful, and I appreciated hearing from someone who clearly has knowledge in the field of the CtC
@@payamjirsa It's been two weeks, and I've watched this about 6 times I think. I can't stop learning from it. Thank you for doing this, it's really helping me up my wedding photography
First-time critique watcher... I saw the length of this video beforehand and thought, “no way I’m sticking around for this whole thing.” Then, proceeded to watch for the next hour, completely compelled! Great stuff! Thank you for the shared expertise!
I have never seen anyone with the ability to look at an image for a few seconds like Pye does and so clearly articulate his thoughts. I don't even care about wedding photography and still spent an hour of my Sunday watching this.
Just a tiny detail about the picture of the bride at 41:52... It's not cropped at the hip or barely above the hip... that's the waist or maybe even slightly above xD
Thanks for the critique (at 16:00) Its hard to hear Pye's rating (and the community's rating), but I gotta keep improving, so all your thoughts are noted! This was the first moments of the first look, so these were just their genuine emotions without any posing. The crop critique was particularly insightful. Cheers.
Don't let the ratings or critique bring you down amigo. Critique says nothing about whether your clients liked the photo. That's what truly matters, if they loved your service, nothing else matters. Take critique simply as a way you can improve going forward.
PyeJirsa totally man! Critiques are always humbling, but also very helpful! Thanks for taking the time to comment, and I really do appreciate all you said!
@@JakeLuden LOL! It's even more funny when you believe that this wasn't digitally enhanced. It's very supernatural how the splash behind them is symmetrical to their pose. It looks very brushed, which is a pretty easy technique. And of course the lazy dodging on their faces is because the image was super dark so he was salvaging a bad image. I think you're just bad at identifying terrible photos.
2easydesigns the photo doesn’t fit my personal taste but was a good photo nonetheless, and it was executed well. No shit they brought up the shadows, so does literally every wedding photographer in every photo unless you’re just shooting jpegs on your camera, in which case you’re merely an amateur.
You guys are a joke! "I would photoshop out that scar on her back" Are you serious like? That's whats wrong with the photo? Are these models you paid to critique like? I hope I never watch any of your videos again
It's what's wrong with the industry at the top. A pimple I can understand photoshopping but a scar is a part of you. And I wouldn't take it out unless the client asked for it to be.
@@nicinigiri138 i agree the dude said some things that don't make sense, and some others are hurtful and offensive, but don't dismiss all the other advice you could use just becauase of one hurtful thing. there's a lot of good info in the video, just don't get hung up on the negatives, and see what you can get from it. you're doing the favor to yourself watching the video, not to them
I totally agree with the first clock image. I would actually be upset if my wedding photographer made me pose/ stage me like that. What the hell am I looking out of? The clock's pole? Am I praying? Who's dying?
This is why photography is subjective. These two can't agree! If you rate your photograph then that's all that matters. Don't follow the crowd, that's the difference between a photograph and art. No disrespect, but who made these two experts? It's like the emperor's new clothes.
It's got some interesting points but so far 40 mins in and the most liked shot by you guys is the most heavily edited image. Maybe its the screen I'm viewing on but the beach couple looks like Clarity way up, shadows way up, highlights way up recovered.. the way the whites have that HDR effect... just looks like its had a mass of filters applied after recovering an under exposed shot.... maybe its my screen :)
It isn't. The guy is a prick. Art is comprised of two elements. Skill and talent. If you're mastering the technical side of photography, no one can tell you what is or isn't good on the artistic end, except for your clients. Ignore that guy. Work hard and make the art you want to make.
I absolutely love the first image. Of course there is a pole exposed and the top of the cloth is cut off... But I think the symmetric square framing and pose really work and the imperfections don't take away from it for me.
Yeah, this is why photographers shouldn't critique other photographers... Unless they actually did something "wrong. "the image is great. Sure, it could be different but I like the pose she is doing and how symmetrical it is. Everyone is praising this guy to death and yeah he is really good and a big name, but doesn't blow me away like some other photographers. But that is just personal preference preference. I think his suggestions would make me like the first image less. I think the pole should have been dealt with, but the clothe being cut off? who cares...and the pole doesn't make it that much less awesome.
@@TheVitalishe True but then they shouldn't have even included it because it is obviously a great image. Some of the other ones had some great tips. I guess it was also the fact that he rated it so low and said not to even include in the photographers portfolio. I bet the bride loved the photo and I have seen some of the images that he has included in his portfolio. He is a great photographer but the first image is better than some he has included.
I am sorry but Pye Jirsa's photos arent that great to be here as critique and criticize great photos. Some photographers are extremely full of themselves...
Pye's eye for editing opportunities and the way he picks out ways that photo's could be adapted - unreal! I agree with the comment "I wouldn't have spotted that if I stared at this image for an hour". The title of the video is "This Wedding Photography Critique is HARSH" so people may need to take what is said with a pinch of salt, I can see where they are coming from within regard to the fact that if it were me in any of these images, those faults would be the first thing I would look for - it is the photographer's job to make client's feel more comfortable with any insecurities and relax into their shoot. I learned so much from this video - thanks!
That double exposure photo has got to be one of the most disgusting wedding photos I have ever seen in my life. Is this really popular? It looks like they are dying or vampires since the trees look like blood vessels. And it is not like you need much technical skill to accomplish this using a mask. I am blown away by how awful this is especially when you see how poorly cropped it is. Look at how angular her chin is. Don't even get me started on the cropping of her hair. Sorry to be so negative but this makes me want to redo the whole thing myself even though I am not a wedding photographer.
This was a super insightful video. I’m not a wedding photographer but I thoroughly enjoyed all the comments and feedback. Love watching these while I edit. Also please have Pye back on the CTC
Thank you Lee for pointing out that a wedding photographer can be right for the right client and make money. I thought you were tough, geez. He is amazing, but like you said most people couldn't afford him.
Whether people in the comments agree with the first photo's bashing or not, thanks for sticking up for the image. I completely agree, it's not nearly as bad as he was making it out to be. Sure, could be better, but it was beautiful. Glad you spoke up instead of sitting there quiet.
Not trying to be picky, i'm sure the bride will love the photo, just critiquing on how I think the photographer could have done a lot more with the scene. So much potential, and that's what I was critiquing.
I respect both of your careers and learn a lot from your work - this video is no exception! Thanks for posting. But my two cents: There’s no reason for this video to be an hour. You don’t have to try to be so entertaining - just keep to the script and let’s get straight to constructive content. Don’t have an hour to watch a mixture of nonsense and solid advice.
One note for the last photo: Incense is used at traditional Catholic weddings, so if they were devout having smoke in the image may have been a choice on their part.
The best Critique the community video by far. Love that Pye actually gave constructive criticisms in detail and communicated himself very well. Hoping to see more people of him here... I guess I can always go check out SLR lounge YT. 😂
bruh, that long exposure shot? amazing! I understand that Pye and Lee are what you could consider "traditional" wedding phtoographers, in the sense that pose and light is heavily leaned upon. where as that logn exposure is definitely for a client and photographer that are more non-traditional and exciting. that photo is a 5, no less than a 4. amazing.
I’m sorry but you guys are so old fashioned and kinda rude honestly... you must have been good back in the day but I’m switching over to watch Jessica Kobeissi
Actually, the effect at 45:20 is really hard to achieve with film, and even also quite hard to achieve on high end newer cameras. I've done a full book project in that style, and found that older sensors with average dynamic range work the best for it. Can recommend anything that has the OG Fujifilm X sensor if you're going for that effect.
As a non professional and hopefully a bride to be one day, I disagree on the image at 19:20 Sure, plenty of brides wouldn't want a silly face or a funny looking photo, blah, blah (No idea why, it's a wedding, not a funeral, if you don't have fun at a wedding, don't marry that person, but I digress). But even if I was a bride that didn't want a silly photo or a silly face or whatever, I would not have an issue with photos like that in a portfolio. Ok, I won't do a silly photo. But most people have fun at their weddings. Plenty of people are silly and do silly things, and make good memories out of it. Why would that be an issue? To be fair, people often show to be far dumber than I give them credit, so maybe I'm in the wrong here. But I will not trust a wedding photographer that can't show me photos of silly moments that look great. It would just show me that every silly moment in my wedding would be missed or discarded and not even attempted to be made into a good photo. And no thanks to that. Edit: I do agree about the context, but just not agreeing about silly photos in portfolio in general. P.S. The image at 50:00 is weeeeird. Everything is great, but the bride's pose is so disturbing to me. Who hugs like that? She has her pelvis pressed to her husband and then she's arched away. If it was her waist, it would be fine or if her whole torso was pressed to him. But tat whole thing just looks... Very off...
There is one thing Pye mentioned that makes criticism for these pictures very difficult. Context! A lot of these will mean a lot to the people involved, tell a specific story, show a moment that will be remembered, but for a portfolio this kind of context will be lost. Thats the reason i always need someone to tell the corresponding stories when i get to see a personal journal.
@@payamjirsa Thank you for your critique of the pictures. Very helpful insights. Being truthful might seem harsh, but this way everybody will learn much more.
I hated my wedding photos! I had a session with her prior to my wedding and loved her work. She didn’t move from one spot the entire wedding! So all you see is the grooms face and the back of my head. When I’m coming down the aisle there is not flattering pictures, even though we did stop for her.. even when standing in one spot. All the “posed ones” were being shot upwards at our face. Great lighting the day off. There’s no pics of our first kiss... 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
What a bummer! My mom hated her photographer too 😛 It seems especially lame bc that's (hopefully) a once-in-a-lifetime experience and the photos are all you have to capture the moment.
mahree elle yea it is lame. I learned a lesson. Just because they have a camera, and call themselves a photographer..l she took my profile pic.. and I still love it. Ugh!
@@gracieshepardtothemax1743 that's true. Ik a lot of ppl who call themselves photographers bc they know how to push a button and I feel so bad for brides like you who try to make a good choice but get let down
lee that was super rude. your comment about the bride and kid not being attractive. these are PEOPLE you're talking about. you should be talking about poses, composition, etc. not on how attractive people are. geez.
I highly relate to the comment made mentioning how some clients say "Those ares / that dress!" and im like "wut that was my favorite shot" Really shows the difference between how photographers / editors look at images vs how the general non-photographers do
You guys train jiu-jitsu? That's awesome! I cut back on wedding photography when I opened my own studio in 2008--San Diego north county. But now I am looking at getting back into shooting more weddings.
When I see these samples and hearing the critique, it just assures me that I should quit my job and finally start photography full-time and not only on occasions as I do now. There are some terrible pictures right there really. Some are just so overdone with post-processing, and reg. removing the scar on shoulder, it's stupid to do so, unless the client asks for that.
I don't wanna hear Lee's opinion on weeding photography. Check his website. He's absolutely horrible weeding photographer. No trend awerness what so ever - you could argue he has his own style insted of riding trends but when the style he's going for is outdated and one of the worst in photography history thats just stupid. Edit: For the people that wanna respond with : Don't watch the video then... I won't :)
1.5k Views and hardly any likes on the video, oof Really enjoyed this CTC! Would like to see a CTC of photos from people who have won tutorials in the past; see how they've improved their photography
I'm with him on the first image. It's striking but it really could have been much more. It's like looking at a bad picture of a pretty girl, everybody likes pretty girls so it gets a high rating than it deserves. It's a great place to shoot, swaying how we feel about the image.
The altar sunflare candle image looks weird because the walls are straight lines but the candles are angled. If you fixed the distortion on the candles so they were vertical like the walls, it would look better (assuming the spacing was even as well).
Another thing I don't understand is why these photographers aren't photoshopping out imperfections. The shot of the guy crying in black and white, there is lint all over his jacket. I would have never given this file to a client like that.
The b&w image of couple overlaid with the trees... where is the purpose... why the trees? If it was something like the wedding cake or something other than trees, maybe something related to their wedding would have been better. Also overlaid images look better when the two images naturally align without conflict, the photographer clearly had to mask out parts of the tree to uncover important sections of the image like their faces, etc.
Everyone’s perspective of what looks nice will always be different. Also, a majority of people who see the photos aren’t going to be expert photographers lol
Pye Jirsa is quite the class act and professional. I love how he speaks when explaining himself and his thoughts as well as his choice of ratings. I like this guy. Literally just went and followed him on Insta. I absolutely love how calm, collected, and quietly in charge he is. I love the way he thinks... Pye is everything I want to be when I grow up as a photographer. When he said, being able to "put rules around it" is what helped him to understand the art of it, that is who I am!! Thank you Pye!!
Interesting comment about photoshopping out a scar on the bride's back. I feel like if the bride chose to have it visible with the dress she's wearing, that says something about the bride. Would you photoshop it out just for your portfolio and not for the client? Or would you take it out altogether? What would you do if you took it out and the client asked why you took it out and maybe got offended that you somehow implied she wasn't perfect enough because of a scar?
I rarely photoshop images I send to clients unless they ask to change things in print. I will photoshop out things for my portfolio because I don’t want my potential clients to notice strange details.
Actually the first time I heard about Pye and SLR Lounge was during Fstopper's wedding tutorial where Pye was talking about their business model and showcased an album software.
This is the only Fstoppers video I’ve ever watched. I appreciated the critiques and I sat assessing and absorbing through this whole video. I agreed with Pye for almost every image. But, the one with the couple in the ocean and the boat to the left just looked over edited, maybe it’s the device I’m watching on. Otherwise, thank you for honest and insightful critiques, I wouldn’t call them harsh because I think every image and photographer can use tips to make things better. Constantly learning and improving is what keeps things growing, photography is no different.
That image at 19:30 is like the picture i would choose to hang up in my house. You can show it kids, they'll love it. It tells the story of a really fun and good wedding day, as it shhould be! Not for the clients that want these very formal pics tough
I have been a follower of Pye for almost ten years. I know he is tough on the photographers that work for him. After watching this critique I need to work on my wedding photography. Great video.
You guys provided incredible feedback and confirm that two great photographers see an image differently. i did appreciate the amount of discernment that Pye provided. Good video!!
Wow F stoppers are totally up their own rears. Incredibly rude comments here, and I've seen a couple of other videos recently where the guys were so into themselves, and they're actually not the greatest photographers on earth either. I hope young people with cameras intending to go pro don't see this and think this is the correct attitude. Totally disrespectful and wrong.
It's been a while since I've seen a critique video, but you guys are definitely head and shoulders above others out there. It's not just - rule of thirds, exposure, crop, horizon lol.
Haha I'm one of the people whom watched the whole thing. Sometimes I play these kinds of things in the background, while editing or researching. Would be rad to do a sports photography critique, could niche down into collections of disciplines, eg. winter sports or water sports or field sports etc. Thanks for all your hard work team!
Don't like that double exposure True Detective shot, it screams using photoshop to save a mediocre image, and it just isn't used well in this case it obscures too much of the groom kind of looks like he's been horribly burned, a bit heavy handed.
some of those pics are not bad but a lot of them are MEHHHH that one with the girl with her mouth open the "stock photo type photo" just was odd i mean is she running from something i mean what is that? just such an odd expression lol
Pye, I think on every single image, gave fantastic comments to the image submitters. Excellent critique, tremendous value for everyone involved. I’ll be looking at his educational materials soon!
I sure would give the world to have you guys do a wedding review and critique for me... I'd much rather have a critique of a full wedding rather than the best photos I liked and put into my portfolio.
Wow! A few of the points mentioned were great reminders for me, but most of what Pye said was like a kick in the head! WHAM!!! Or, DUH!!! Thanks so much for this video! All these pointers spill into so much more than just wedding photography. I'm seriously considering Pye's course. Thank you!
I don't get how the 38:40 photo got a pretty good rating. The photoshop work was horrible, the photographer tried SO hard to lighten up the couple in post that it made them look weird, like they don't belong in the environment. I mean it's a sunset, there is no way they could be this well lit. It just looks bad. And the composition/moment is not that great either. The only thing insteresting is the backlit drops of water.
I understand the criticism is harsh, however I learnt a ton from Pye and its a lot more helpful than being too "kind" and not improving as a photographer. Pye takes some tremendous shots, he is truly an expert in his field.
damn the host is hella annoying, made watching the video unbearable at times. pye, on the other hand, amazing! props to him for playing along with the host
I watched this from start to finish and i was hooked. It says on the description "harsh" and i agree it is, but in my point of view while watching this video is not just a critique but also a great tip for us photographers in the field specially in wedding photography.
really enjoyed this critique, because I follow pye as well. too bad the images couldn't compliment the guest, but I was very interested in pye's analysis and suggestions. would like to see him on again, AND, in a challenge !!

Yup. Not so attractive is code for fat. Not. Cool. At. All.
Yeah a little rude
Sorry Heather. I agree, and I tried to explain in a full comment to S A below.

Amy Faith, I agree tremendously. Document everything perfect and imperfect.
Agreed. It seems they believe every wedding photo is posed or staged when 90% are spontaneous in the moment images.
The first photo doesn't look like she's experiencing what should be one of the happiest days of her life. Instead, it looks like she's headed for something dreadful, like an execution. The atmosphere is too dreary. It's a nice photo, just not a nice wedding photo.
j cook reminds me of cerci Lannister in GoT looking out from her window
And the clock's arrow going back instead of going ahead to the right? That's the first thing I notice.
I just hate the composition, she could stand a little bit more to the left, so that she would be in the center of the clock. Also as mentioned in the video, there could be some improvements made to the details.
Michał Krawiec Yes. It’s so cold. It express nothing.
She's walking into forever (shrugs)
Why would you photoshop out a scar? That scar may have some real meaning to her. Imperfections can be perfect, I would never PS out a scar , you have no right to do that
He was saying to the portfolio, not to her
Rui Frias yes I know that.
No thanks.
It could also be something that has no meaning whatsoever and the bride would prefer it to be gone. Better to ask than assume.
Because most people don’t like the imperfections such as scars... unless she asked specifically to keep it in, I would edit it out
Really like when you guys edit the image as you speak. Like when you say needs to be cropped and then you actually show us what you meant
Agreed!
The clock picture would have been better with the groom. Representing "time together" . It's saying time alone to me, sad and solitary.
So, having not finished the video, I have decided to sell all my equipment on eBay and go live in the mountains. Peace!
Fiendish me too! Bye everyone! 🤣
🤣🤣🤣😭
Dude right......
I literally had this same reaction! If this is what it takes to be a professional photographer, seems a bit dehumanizing to critique this way and there’s just something about this video that was off putting. Like no thanks.
My exact same reaction, haha
We aren't critiquing what you give your clients, we are critiquing what you put on your website. You only want your best images on your website. -P
I was thinking the same thing :(
pye is destroying every Emotion. maybe he is a good photographer, but he misses the Thing. he wants to perfectize(?) every single Frame. sometimes the not perfect photo is the best
kyzee truthahn Well it depends on the clientele. For the people that can afford him, they like the perfect, heavily-posed pictures. If you want a photographer that’s less posey and more journalistic, hire Lee instead.
Side note: ‘perfect’ in verb form is just ‘perfect’-the emphasis on how you pronounce it is just different.
Noun = pERfect
Verb = perfEct
Appreciate it Robert!
or just buy his workshop. its worth it
Jesus this comment section has some fragile photographers lmao.
Appreciate it Photo Guy!
PyeJirsa just earned yourself another subscription! I'm ready to learn
@@payamjirsa It's been two weeks, and I've watched this about 6 times I think. I can't stop learning from it. Thank you for doing this, it's really helping me up my wedding photography
He was not rough. He's thinking objectively, not emotionally like most of the people that comment in outrage.
Pye is just on a different level.
The usefulness of the critique in this video goes far beyond wedding photography. Straight to the point and productive. Thank you for this!
Appreciate it!
I loved yours! So natural and intimate
phoebe969 thank you so much!
PyeJirsa totally man! Critiques are always humbling, but also very helpful! Thanks for taking the time to comment, and I really do appreciate all you said!
I've had brides get upset when I photoshop out scars etc. It is hard when moments like this happen spontaneously! I really liked this image actually.
38:42 That image is horrid, why are we praising bad photoshop touchups...
Yes!! The couple looks completely fake.
considering that it was pulled off with off camera flash and not photoshop, i think you're just bad at identifying photography and flash techniques.
He even says he’s not sure if it’s photoshopped, the people look fake. Whatever they did with the flash/technique/etc, it just looks very unnatural.
"I would photoshop out that scar on her back"
Are you serious like? That's whats wrong with the photo?
Are these models you paid to critique like?
I hope I never watch any of your videos again
It's what's wrong with the industry at the top. A pimple I can understand photoshopping but a scar is a part of you. And I wouldn't take it out unless the client asked for it to be.
excactly what I was thinking, such a waste of time to watch this crap
@@nicinigiri138 i agree the dude said some things that don't make sense, and some others are hurtful and offensive, but don't dismiss all the other advice you could use just becauase of one hurtful thing. there's a lot of good info in the video, just don't get hung up on the negatives, and see what you can get from it. you're doing the favor to yourself watching the video, not to them
I totally agree with the first clock image. I would actually be upset if my wedding photographer made me pose/ stage me like that. What the hell am I looking out of? The clock's pole? Am I praying? Who's dying?
then you are unlike the vast majority of wedding clients. it's an incredible detail shot.
It looked sad to me like she was nervous or regretting it
@@neci596 She wasn't facing the camera how the hell would you even know that.
And I found the weird drapes really distracting. It was a pretty boring photo (at least to me, an amateur).
Pete Floydeh I agree. So heavily edited.
Yesss looks so unnatural
I absolutely hated the photoshop in that photo.
This might be my favorite one, Pye has a great eye for detail and is good at articulating his feedback. Lee you're ok too
So if the first image is that low, I have no hope 😂
Dude this whole video is killing me hahaa
Seriously...
Sterling Grinnell exactly. I’m hanging up my camera. My photos would be shitted on.
I agree, the bride’s pose echos the symmetry of the clock, and a hip cock or head turn would be discordant.
I love that image too. It just shows that these ratings are quite subjective. Nothing wrong with that.
I would like to see Pye redo the first image in his liking. Definitely
Pye has right. without a curtain on the window it would be much better. less is more.
"I dont like this picture, i give it a 2" and then a couple mins later, " I love this picture, i give it a 2."
50:13 that wasn’t even a “wacky” dress though tf 🤣 it’s just like a mesh bone-in corset lmao men
That double exposure photo has got to be one of the most disgusting wedding photos I have ever seen in my life.
Photo at 15:00 is beautiful. The candle sticks, the light flare, the lighting from behind, its gorgeous
Whether people in the comments agree with the first photo's bashing or not, thanks for sticking up for the image. I completely agree, it's not nearly as bad as he was making it out to be. Sure, could be better, but it was beautiful. Glad you spoke up instead of sitting there quiet.
fjjjjjsdlfjslakjdf looks gloomy, like time is ticking and she’s watching it go by like her wedding is a bad idea ahhaha
First pictures is amazing ..dude being super picky ..smh
Not trying to be picky, i'm sure the bride will love the photo, just critiquing on how I think the photographer could have done a lot more with the scene. So much potential, and that's what I was critiquing.
I got you 🙌🏽
I respect both of your careers and learn a lot from your work - this video is no exception! Thanks for posting. But my two cents:
There’s no reason for this video to be an hour.
Not sure which effect you are talking about. Overexposed top? Motion blur? Something else?
As a non professional and hopefully a bride to be one day, I disagree on the image at 19:20
Sure, plenty of brides wouldn't want a silly face or a funny looking photo, blah, blah (No idea why, it's a wedding, not a funeral, if you don't have fun at a wedding, don't marry that person, but I digress).
Very off...
Lee is to Pye as Conan is to Jordan Schlansky
Haha as long as I am not Jordan I’m good
Nailed it.
Exactly, it's what makes a photo great for a client, versus awesome for everyone.
@@payamjirsa Thank you for your critique of the pictures. Very helpful insights. Being truthful might seem harsh, but this way everybody will learn much more.
Lee saying the picture might have value as a stock image at 19:04 Looks like Lee vomited in his mouth saying that :D
I don’t know why he asks experts on and then questions them. That would drive me nuts.
Ik a lot of ppl who call themselves photographers bc they know how to push a button and I feel so bad for brides like you who try to make a good choice but get let down
lee that was super rude. your comment about the bride and kid not being attractive. these are PEOPLE you're talking about. you should be talking about poses, composition, etc. not on how attractive people are. geez.
I highly relate to the comment made mentioning how some clients say "Those ares / that dress!" and im like "wut that was my favorite shot"
Really shows the difference between how photographers / editors look at images vs how the general non-photographers do
You guys train jiu-jitsu? That's awesome! I cut back on wedding photography when I opened my own studio in 2008--San Diego north county. But now I am looking at getting back into shooting more weddings.
When I see these samples and hearing the critique, it just assures me that I should quit my job and finally start photography full-time and not only on occasions as I do now. There are some terrible pictures right there really. Some are just so overdone with post-processing, and reg. removing the scar on shoulder, it's stupid to do so, unless the client asks for that.
Seeing Pye pick the winner made me respect him even more.
I won't :)
Yeah Lee, stop talking. lol
First of all it is spelt ‘wedding’ and not ‘weeding’. you can’t critique the critiques when you can’t spell shit.
1.5k Views and hardly any likes on the video, oof
Really enjoyed this CTC!
Exactly the reason I left it in. She loved this image and didn't care about her scar at all (I asked her beforehand).
never thought i would see Fstoppers and SLR Lounge together
Best CTC yet! Great job guys.
I have been a follower of Pye for almost ten years. I know he is tough on the photographers that work for him. After watching this critique I need to work on my wedding photography. Great video.
Thanks Ted, appreciate your comment.
damn the host is extremely rude and unprofessional, not just to his guest but the clients in the pictures aswell
As long as the paying party enjoy the pictures, all this critique is pointless.
Wrong. He's 100% spot on. He's thinking objectively. Not emotionally.
freddie ljunberg creating photography content now
First picture was like Cersei in Game of thrones looking out the red keep before she blew up that place with wildfire
Come on Lee, you are keeping me watching your videos all day long and I need to work please.
I think that was the best. I've loved the Pye's critics and ideas how to improve photos.
the first pic looks so depressing. Like, she's marching to her death.
This series should be called "critique my photoshop skills"
Im not a photographer. Why did I watch the whole thing????????
Where is the link to upload photos of birds ?
Don't like that double exposure True Detective shot, it screams using photoshop to save a mediocre image, and it just isn't used well in this case it obscures too much of the groom kind of looks like he's been horribly burned, a bit heavy handed.
@fstoppers Guys, where do I send the picture for the critique? I've never done it before and there's no link in the description. Thank you!
fstoppers.com/critique-community/photos-birds-frame#submissions
some of those pics are not bad but a lot of them are MEHHHH that one with the girl with her mouth open the "stock photo type photo" just was odd i mean is she running from something i mean what is that? just such an odd expression lol
Haha right? A lot of these were confusing
Pye, I think on every single image, gave fantastic comments to the image submitters. Excellent critique, tremendous value for everyone involved. I’ll be looking at his educational materials soon!
If you are a wedding photographer, Pye's education on wedding photography can't be beat. -P
Appreciate it Michael!
I get that Pye Jirsa is good but the host should stop praising him SO MUCH all the times, it gets annoying. He's good but you're overhyping him
I sure would give the world to have you guys do a wedding review and critique for me... I'd much rather have a critique of a full wedding rather than the best photos I liked and put into my portfolio.
I love these videos. The reason being is you explain why its not great and how you can improve it. I love learning whay yall have to say.
Damn this was harsh. But I did learn a lot
I was wondering who was crazy enough to watch the whole hour long critique but after this video I get it
I feel like I've learned so much. going to watch again and take notes this time :] thank you!
I like the music in the end. Whats the name please.
damn the host is hella annoying, made watching the video unbearable at times. pye, on the other hand, amazing! props to him for playing along with the host
I thought the images were great! We did actually do a challenge too.
Definitely my favourite critique. I learned so much! Thanks guys 👍
