    I love the 85. On the other hand, primes are stressful at weddings.

    • @cslattfri
      @cslattfri 5 років тому

      Curious why you feel that way. I'm asking because I'm getting another DSLR and am torn between the 70-200 and the 85mm. I like the idea of having 200mm so I can get shots from a distance and Nikon's 70-200 is very, very good. But the 85mm is amazing also and perfect for portraits. I was almost set on the 70-200 until I saw this video. The 70-200 is so big and HEAVY! OMG. So I am now considering the 85mm because of this video. Currently on my D750 I have the 24-120 and I also have the 14-24 but I never use it for weddings. I'd love to hear your thoughts on why you think a prime lens would be stressful (have never used one).

    • @poopdaddy4217
      @poopdaddy4217 5 років тому +9

      @@cslattfri If you were to have to choose between one or the other, I'd definitely suggest the 70-200 as it's a wonderful all-rounder.
      The 85 (1.8 or perhaps, 1.4) gives you that extra creamy background and it's super sharp... on the other hand -you have to zoom with your feet and that's not great at weddings when you can find yourself either darting around too much, or worse, being backed into a corner unable to get the frame :)

    • @cslattfri
      @cslattfri 5 років тому +2

      @@poopdaddy4217 That's one of the things that appeal to me about the 85mm 1.4- the extra creamy background. But I suspect you are right. There will be instances that it would be difficult to use my feet as a zoom. Now I have a new thought process: buy the 70-200 now and save for the 85mm. I don't do a ton of weddings, I will have to hustle to get more so I can justify the purchase. Thanks so much for responding. What you said I knew in my heart, I guess I just had to hear it. When I win lotto, I'll have them ALL!!!!!!!!!!

    • @poopdaddy4217
      @poopdaddy4217 5 років тому +3

      @@cslattfri Thank you for the kind reply. I doubt you will regret going for the 70-200, it's a beautiful lens and very versatile.
      If you wanted to add the 85mm into the mix, you could save quite a bit going for the 1.8 ... I personally own that as well as the 70-200 and use it predominantly when I have greater control over the environment and subjects....
      Either way - the 70-200 will be your favourite lens in no time, I'm sure :)
      Happy shooting! :)

    • @cslattfri
      @cslattfri 4 роки тому +1

      @@Happymali10 I went with the 70-200. I figured it's called the "wedding lens" for a reason. Now I have my eye on a 35mm prime. IT IS NEVER ENDING!! Gotta save my pennies for that one though! I'm out of cash! :)

I always use what I have which is my workhorse 35-350 3.5-4.5L and 20-35 2.8-3.5 on my Canon 5Dmk 2. Which was an upgrade from my Canon 40D then 50D. I have a Nikon D750 and will be getting a D850 very soon and phasing out an older camera. I'm not sure which lens I'll get more use out of for weddings- the 70-200mm or the 85mm prime for the D850. On my D750 I mostly use the 24-120mm. I also have the 14-24mm wide angle but never use it for weddings. Not yet anyway. If you had the choice of either the 70-200 or the 85mm which would you choose? I like the idea of having 200mm so I can get shots at a good distance but the lens is so big and heavy. And the 85mm is great for portraits. I was set on getting the 70-200 until I watched this video. And now I'm torn. I would really love your opinion on this. I am 100% sure I won't be unhappy with either lens. I can't afford both at the moment as they are both high end. I do need to pick one. As always I appreciate your videos. I'm hoping your opinion will help me along to an actual decision. I am a middle child, this is difficult for me. LMAO.

    So, if you *had* to shoot a wedding with only one lens, you'd choose the 85?
    I'm going FF, and can only afford one lens rn (no renting options in my country), and am bummed as to which one to buy. I love the 35mm, and am definitely getting it sooner or later, but am afraid that it won't suffice for weddings, and I won't have enough pics with blurry background. Even though I know lots of togs say they'd choose the 35 if they had only one lens.
    I in general don't like the looks of the 85, but it would be better for many reasons (I'm prob buying 70-200 one day, or 135 if they make it for the Z series, or with the adapter). But I'm also afraid I won't be able to shoot the getting ready and church parts as it can easily happen that the room is small, and some weddings here are done in small chapels.
    And I neither like nor don't like the 50. Since I'm basically using it on a crop frame (35 DX), I always feel I'm either missing that extra space in the frame, or that extra reach

    New subbie here. Super impressed. Can't believe you didn't use any external lights especially at that group shots. Omg, all natural lights. And also your editing is simple and looks very natural. Super impressive

    thanks for sharing! Love your style of shooting, much less "Traditional" which I really don't care for. Much less intrusive and natural. Great work!

    You should review the Fuji 50mm f/1.0 when it arrives.

    Great video! Question. Do you ever use flash when shooting a wedding ceremony? Thanks!

    Is it normal to miss focus too much with an 85mm? I made my first work with one of those today, but the Canon one. In 2.8 the depth of field is crazy thin already. But one thing you are doing and I didn't is getting full body pictures, certainly the distance helps.

    Hey, Taylor, amazing insights as always!
    Here's a difficult one for you. What do yo do in terms of posing when the groom is shorter that the bride and not happy about it?
    I mean you can't make him step on a rock or something all the time because it's not practical and will hit his confidence and you can't do full body shots. And you can't make the bride stay low all the time. That totally eliminates the walking towards/away from you full body shot which I love.
    Have you shot a couple like that, what did you do?
    Thanks!
