What you are experiencing is what I describe as the 'embarrasment of riches'. We grew up in a world that had a fraction of the opportunties for bringing concepts to life. Years ago, the artists alley at the convention hallway was where all the creative types hung out with their sketchbooks, hoping to impress people. Now we have resin printing at home and a.i. Every day, every HOUR, is another explosion of creative output, gonzo minis, and mind blowing imagery. It's a supernova of art, sculpts, animation, and visual feasts. It's hard for the imagination to keep up. I feel sorry the generations growing up in this hyper media. They'll be jaded by the time they reach 11. We are reaching a saturation point of 'coolness'. The coolness bar is so high now that it's hard to stand out, and it's hard to be impresed.

I have to say that I both love and fear the way your mind works sometimes. I can't wait to see what you will do with painting these models, but at the same time I'm afraid that there may be an upcoming video titled ''cooking with Tabletop Alchemy'' and there will be an unacceptable amount of spiders included in the desert course. 😁
Also, this slippery slope of ''jeez it's only 'xyz' bucks'' is why I try to avoid Aliexpress nowadays

I think what you're describing is the connecting slope between "hobby" and "chore". I love painting models, especially to give as gifts- but the thought of taking a commission (turning it into work) kills part of that enjoyment. Maybe when you look at all 3 on the shelf you see it slightly more as a task to complete, and not a passtime to enjoy?

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  5 місяців тому +2

This might be what it is. Funny, my buddy who could probably make a living doing commissions refuses to do em lol precisely because he doesn’t want to think of hobbying as work (and he doesn’t want to part with anything he’s painted lol).

Not miniatures. but my PDF collection grew at a super accelerated rate, Then I started to print them off. I found an updated version of the Trove, and found a place to get all of the OOP Merp modules. I was very happy because I found the few that I never had, turning them into a bound printed version felt great, but as I downloaded all of them it was starting to feel off. I could in a short while have every single module and ready to run for my collection. But it was starting to lose something when I was going to print off some of the ready to runs that I didn't like, and I stopped there. There is a dangerous line to cross, when something loses the uniqueness because you went overboard on a project. It is cool that I now have Moria, a Dwarven city. Not so cool when it is one of many , next to "Hillmen of the Trollshaws".

Yep, excellent parallel example. It made me think for a minute and I think an odd counter to this whole thing is a “library” - not of gaming materials but just of “reading books”, for some reason in the particular case of a library I don’t think I feel the same way … might have to do a video to explore this lol! 🍻

I have found that I can put about six figures in my active painting area. More, and I cannot be excited about any one figure and I see them as chores. Individually, I can think about them and get excited about painting them. If I only have one or two in my paint area, though, I know I cannot continuously paint because I'll have to wait for sections to dry and I won't stay focused on painting. If I go buy some figures, I have to put them away until I have an open spot in my paint area or else switch out a half-painted figure for the new one.
I hate having partially-painted figures hanging out among the greys, but sometimes, it has to happen. Sometimes, I get stumped on a half-finished color scheme. Sometimes, I just lose inspiration for painting that particular thing. Sometimes, the new shiny leaps to the front of the queue.
Thank you for airing and discussing these little brain greivances of mini painting!

I love kitbashing with larger scale models! Mainly because my eyesight is so bad but also because I love to create stories for what I paint. And yes my projects are often stuck in the in process stage but that only means that I haven't figured out how to do something. 😅 Or found the final piece to complete it. I find that my in progress pile motivates me to learn something so I can move forward. So at least I'm still stumbling forward.😂

I'm a sucker for cool STLs, model boat kits, rockets, casting sets for steam and gas engines (yup, do the mill and lathe thing as well as lasers and printers). I realized late last year that the stuff waiting for me to build, paint, and or machine the model would take more time than allowed for by my birth certificate best by date. Quite a rude awakening, and it made me sell some of those kits and casting sets that just don't excite me like they did 20 or 30 years ago when I got them. Oh well, guess it's time to head off to the model rail show on Saturday! Of course I have cash from all the stuff I sold at Cabin Fever Model Engineering show last weekend making my wallet scream spend some of this. Wonder if I'll manage to avoid going too nuts this weekend? :-)

Hey there. I've never painted a mini before, though I have painted a couple 3D printed props / cosplay pieces. I find such joy watching this channel because while I can't relate to the specific techniques and exact materials used in every video, I feel connected to a lot of the struggles and topics you discuss. I am an engineer by design, and one of the many (thanks ADHD) hobbies I have is 3D printing, and more specifically I enjoy building and modifying the printers. I currently have 7 printers. Some fully working, some fully broken, some never before yet assembled, and some in the in-between stages. I found that having so many things in an unfinished state gave me a lot of anxiety about approaching any of the projects, and I have recently begun the process of working on the ones closest to being finished and getting rid of the parts - and in one case most of a whole printer - that are not of any further use and area actually keeping me from working on or using any of the printers. Thanks for sharing your stories with us, it's an inspiration and a comfort to those who can relate. Keep up the great work!

My collector module is my greatest hobby weakness. I always have to fight that voice that tells me the next thing will be the mcguffin that finally gets rid of all the struggle, whether it is a paint, brush, widget, or miniature. For a while it was large scale minis, so now I have a fair few on my shelf ready to paint. They are definitely a nice break from working on tiny bits, but man do I want to go all out on them every time. Thanks for the great video! 💜

That, right there, is 'Distraction'. Your spike-to-puddle-of-coolness thing refers to the dilution of attention. Ideally we want to be focusing our attention and achieving Flow when we construct and paint that model (to court 'Mastery', get our Zen on, and transmute Art into Magic!). However, those other models are picking at your attention, begging to be beheld. I have the same problem, but as well as that, I have multiple hobbies... as well as my piles of opportunity and my half complete projects on my mini table, I also have, among other things, several 3d printers with an ever growing pile of STLs, and a silver smithing bench.... and you'd be amazed how well a project can grab at your attention when it is _literal_ treasure!!

As a fellow collector. I have been through this. It's a good thing my wife keeps me in reality at times. She looks at my models, Slot cars, Figures and the rest and just says. You can't have any more until you build the ones you have. She knows some of the stuff I won't build or paint for collectors reasons. So I get to build and buy one for one. I have shelf after shelf in my hobby/sound studio as she calls it full of my models... ect. It's time to build. Well maybe later. I am on the air right now. LOL

Back in the early 90s there was a company that cast 12 inch LEAD figures (could have been Grendel, can't recall the name).
Anyway, at the time I was playing games at a VR centre in Nottingham and they wanted a prize for a competition they were running and I offered to paint up a couple of these "Models" as the prizes.
Multi part 12 inch lead figures, 3 of them.
30 years later I still shudder at my hubris. It was a nightmare.
I was happy with the finished pieces, the company was happy, they prize winners were happy ... but I swore never again.
