Painting A Bigger Model Is Fun! And Frustrating! 🤣 [Ep. 72]

  • Another skirmish scenario is coming up and for that we need a Troll, so let’s paint up this Privateer Press warbeast! 💥More below!⬇
    Even though I have several 75mm figures waiting to be worked on, this troll is still considered 32mm, but it’s a big dude! And unwieldy. And fun! And frustrating. But overall, it’s good to just get another mini migrated from the Pile of Opportunity to the Done and Displayed case.

    This is a much better paint job than all the self-deprecating remarks would suggest. Love the narrative approach to describing your colour choices and painting process. Love it.

    Yeah, fake it until you fake it, and then some more.

    What about a hand rest? Some wood. Constructed in a truncated pyramid for stability. It has that mouse-pad spongey stuff on top. Make it high enough so you don't have to bend forward to paint. Supporting the wrists more than the hands. I just did a search for jeweller's rest. That's a grand right there in Dollarydoos money. So yeah, depending on your woodworking skills, or who you know who has woodworking skills ...
    That is a scary sculpt. Looking forward to the session when it gets put down on the table.

    I use a Game Envy Hobby Holder with a stability bar. The stability bar gives me something to place my hand against while holding the mini, though I can also use it to brace my brush hand against for detail work, or even brace the brush against when I'm really close. Game Envy has two sizes, and I bet the XL bar would work well for the troll. I haven't gotten into bust painting, but it would probably handle that too. It does a fantastic job at keeping your hands off the mini.
    Minis get attached to bottle caps and I have some racks that the caps can screw onto to store minis that are not on the handle. I also have two handles to work on, but that's not really needed.

    • @tabletopalchemy

      Ah interesting I’ll have to look up those bars. 🤙🍻

    It's Thursday. That means I'm going to walk in the door, say hello to the dog, love on my granddaughter, get a glass of Old Crow, and turn on Tabletop Alchemy.
    Ignatius, my brother. You are a great painter. Trust me, I know. I may not be a professional painter, but I am a truck driver. As such, I know things. I'm sure you know, half of what any "expert" says, they are just faking it. You do good work. I think the troll looks excellent. I want to paint one now.
    As far as his towel and where he got it; he got it at the Flying J of coarse. If you earn enough points on your loyalty card, you can get a piece of pizza and a shower for free.
    It even has the same shade as some of the towels I've seen. Bleach can only do so much.
    Thanks for the inspiration, and the laughs, bro.
    Keep on trucking.

    It looks good. I've spent longer and worked harder to produce far less pleasing results! One of these days I'll actually approach a model or project thinking "I'm going to make this with glorious confidence" rather than "time to learn more ways not to get the desired results and how to fix it up" :-) I knew an old machinist who would only answer "steel wool" when asked what he was making until the thing was done. A wise man.

    The expression of your face when you said ''turn the frown upside down" and then realize what you said would be enough reason for me to subscribe to the channel, had I not been subscribed already. That and "holding mini by the mini" 🤣
    Sorry, I'm 44 for official purposes but deep down I'm really just 13.
    And also, I see that you have been visited by the troublesome deity Daubius Implastrum, the Eternal Apprentice. He sits high upon the Pantheon of Pettish Spirits, swirling his celestial palette where every hue is a shade of chagrin. Worshipers often leave offerings of crumpled sketchbooks and snapped paintbrushes, hoping to appease him so that one day, their masterpieces will grace the galleries!
    Now for a troll to come by a modesty cloth of suitable size and durability, it would indeed need to scavenge the more... robust textiles. So perhaps the fabric meant for chastity belt intended for Agony Aunts of The Shades of the city of Ankh-Morpork would be an appropriate source. If you permit a little bit of a crossover to happen.
    But you know what? Although he trolled you hard throughout the video I think you successfully slew the monster with your paintbrush. It's a very nice looking and not so small mini.

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  6 місяців тому +1

      “Every hue is the shade of chagrin.” 🤣🤣🤣 That is some wordsmithing right there, my friend, genius. And lo and behold we are the same (internal) age. Lol.

    Do you know how many times I let out a loud as hell belly laugh every time you said "Master Painter"? I am so immature. I could have started a drinking game. As you talking about painting the crystalline growth on the troll. I was reminded of a commercial I produced about a year ago for a plumbing company. Don't ask me why. They wanted a sound FX that sounded like a backed up sink being cleaned out. I used an old sound FX I produce on a reel to reel back in like 1989. I belched while recording at 15 IPS and then played it back at 7.5 IPS.

    Your result is great. It's clean and well defined. The colours work well together. A little self depricating humour can be fun but you're pretty hard on yourself. As for paint coming off in your hands... what are you priming with? I've been using Vallejo Surface Primer for ages. Even on old metal figures it holds tight and keeps the paint on. Once I'm done painting I'll give it a good coat of matte finish and it's good to play with. Looking forwartd to your next one.

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  6 місяців тому +1

      Well thanks! Yeah most of my self deprecation is borne out of frustration lol. I’ve been using Stynilrez, I’ve got some Vallejo but haven’t tried it yet. 🤙🍻

    I really like the work you did on the Extreme Dire Troll Mauler; he came out awesome imo. In particular, the burst capillary is a really nice touch.
    As for the modesty cloth, maybe take a page from Homer Simpson: he ripped it from an even larger modesty cloth. . . .

    I had an awakening when I revealed a very poorly and hasty-painted monster to my players. They were amazed at a job I did 'just so it wasn't grey'. Now I don't worry so much about my skill (or lack there of) at the painting desk and just have fun. Sure, we make mistakes and see our errors but we will be the only ones. All that to say I think it came out amazing!

    I don't know how you can keep track of so many mixtures of paints. I find it more difficult than necessary, and can usually find a color I need from my meager paint collection. Even then, I sometimes forget which particular shade of green I was using for which particular part. I can't even imagine keeping track of different amounts of 3 different paints. I think your Troll came out good though. I also get paint rubbing off, particularly on pointy bits, and I don't like the handles for the most parts. But I don't worry about it and once I've glued it to the base I can then hold it by the base and touch up those pointy bits that the paint got rubbed off on.

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  6 місяців тому +1

      Oh I have plenty of trouble keeping track of paint mixtures lol trust me! I consciously decide to not worry about it. Even tho it stresses me out sometimes lol. It’s all good, just having fun is the most important part (I keep telling myself)! 🍻

    I think this would have been a good model to try out oil paints on. Stupid easy to blend and add/remove paints, thins endlessly for glazing, and a great start would have been an oil wash and wipe to add shadow depths before going in for highlights.
