I didn't know this film was out there. But it still doesn't answer my question; Where is this? I'm an SJSU alum, but not old enough to remember the dirt track at Bud Winter Field. But there are a lot more trees than I ever remember seeing only a few years (and a Tartan track installation) later. They would had to have leveled a forest. This definitely was not SJCC where they have had a 200 meter straight for decades. Where? Anybody?
The 1974 Guinness Book of Records states the location as San Jose, as well as giving the date of 7 May 1966. This would have been obtained from the IAAF who would have had to ratify the record, so it is very unlikely to be wrong.
The San Jose track is renowned for its setting amongst trees, that corresponds with this video evidence. There's also some footage of the 1968 olympic trials online and it looks like the same venue.
He didn't have the explosiveness of Bolt. Smith was a piss poor starter--he never could have won the 100 meter title. He couldn't carry Bolt's jock strap.
That race is a gut-buster! 200M straight is a huge psychological barrier.
I was there with my dad that day. We went for every track meet that year. Saw Tommy beat Lee Evans in the 400m also at one of those meets.
Extraordinary to see this footage. Amazing what film is out there. Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful sprinter, so elegant and fleet.
ONE OF MY IDOLS IS TOMMIE SMITH

What a superb and fascinating piece of film of an amazing athlete.
This guy was a monster!!! very versatile.........
First person to drop a sub 44 split on the 4x4 relay 43.9!!!!!! He and Lee Evans(RIP) were serious rivals in college!!!!!
Great to see these old films surface. Just watching Smith jogging back you can see the dude was born to be seriously fast.
Looking for the Sacramento invitational 1966 if there is one. I ran the 100 and the 220. Tommy sets record of 20 flat with a turn.
I remember the name!
Impresionante, y en recta!
Brotha was striking in tube socks and low top converse
Tommie Jets

Smith was a 200M/400m sprinter so comparison with Bolt pretty meaningless.
Probably a 19.30 if that was modern day track and spikes
T.S. was a beast...better than UB

Barry Klonsky how can he better than Bolt and not go 19.19. Bolt could run 19.5 at 15 on a curve
Cheetah Car yea i dont kno why i said that lol
@@andycano5756 Smith had the finish speed of a freight train!!!!!
@@seandafny he couldnt run 19.5 on a curb. His world junior record is 19.93 for the 200m
