They mention Peter all the time. Don’t get caught up in this moment. It was for them, that’s okay. Pretty sure Peter would understand. He left his spot open for a reason.

Peter Norman was vilified in Australia for supporting Smith and Carlos . He really should have been included on the sculpture. Both John and Tommie were pallbearers at Peter`s funeral such was their admiration for the forgotten man of the 68 protest.

NO, no, no, sorry but all three stayed loyal to one another til Norman died, Carlos and Smith both even flew to Australia to be poll bearer to Peter Norman when he pasted away. Smith and Carlos are the ones who decide to initiate this 1968 act of defiance against injustice- this ESPN was a salute to their initiative: THIS was a moment for their courage, THEIR moment. Some comments say they should have mentioned Norman. No they did not need/have to mention all those who put their life in danger helping them get shelter and food and protection, and suffered and were trashed along with them simply for helping them when racist society trashed Smith and Carlos unjustly. Smith and Carlos ONLY NEEDED TO MENTION THEIR DIRECT FAMILY. who directly, ON THE DAILY, suffered with them 24/7. what Norman did for them (he supported them 100%), they did for him (they supported him 100%). PLUS they have been giving countless hours and energy through dedicating their time to be interviewed, filmed, travelling all over the world just to participate in projects uplifting the name of Peter Norman and his family (documentaries, films, TV specials, funeral, etc...for Peter Norman). Let them savor A moment JUST FOR THEM and their brotherhood once a while, which is still very little for what they gave to the world. Peter has his statue now in Australia and it does not mention Smith and Carlos, and that's perfectly ok too, as it is a statue/sculpture honoring Norman.

These guys showed the world what America was going through. We are still engaged with the same systemic racism that caused the raised fists. Kaepernick has kept this spirit alive and showing us that we’ve made progress but systemic racism still exists. Black Lives Matter. Absolutely! 1968 Olympics and 52 years later the NFL. It’s time to end racism once and for all. Hats off to 2nd place finisher Peter Norman. He helped them put this symbolic gesture together. God bless these guys for helping open my eyes.

Check out Peter Norman, the Australian "white" 200 meters sprinter that came second (and got the silver medal) on this race between Tommie Smith and John Carlos and still holds the Australian Olympic record for this event. This race is also important because "the three Olympic medalists" were punished (and banned for life) for demonstrating at the medal ceremony by showing their support for Civil Human Rights in 1968. There is a statue in the San Jose State University grounds commemorating the "Black Power salute" after this race.. Sadly, the monument shows only Smith and Carlos racing their fits to the air in their "salute" but have a 2nd place silver medal empty podium (where Peter Norman stood). Peter Norman was a strong supporter of the Civil Human Rights movement among many Olympic athletes in 1968 and even bore the human rights' badge at the podium ceremony in support of Smith's and Carols' stand. However, Peter Norman was a "white boy " from Australia so...no statue for him, just an empty podium space in the monument that stands as a symbol of civil human rights and mutual equality in the USA today (October 2015). Incidentally, both black gloves raced to the air belonged to Peter Norman. All three stayed friends throughout the years that followed and Tommie Smith and John Carlos were the front pole bearers at Peter Norman's funeral in Australia. Lets we forget.

Smith and carlos wanted norman's statue however norman wanted the silver medal podium empty - he believed that it should be empty to allow any person who supported/s the movement to also stand up on the podium with smith and carlos - hence making it even more significant and a powerful work of art

Ricardo good info however the gloves were all owned by Tommy Smith and John Carlos forgot to bring his gloves so Peter Norman told Smith if he can lend the other to Carlos. Hence Smith raised his right fist and Carlos his left to posed for that iconic sports photo. So that simple suggestion and support to the movement from a "white boy from Down Under" turned out to be the reason poor Norman lost all of the recognition and privileges his own country should have given him after winning the silver in his lifetime.

It really took courage for the three of them to stand up on that podium and take a stand on what they believed in. Now it is 2018 and it seems like deja vu all over again. Colin Kaepernick, need I say more? It amazes me how{ some white people} feel it is necessary to tell Black people when the right time to protest. It was happening way back then and still is going on today. I stand up for what I believe in. Like these 3 courageous men, I decide when it is the RIGHT TIME and not the WHITE TIME.
