Maybe it's because i'm not from the US but POP to me has always been capable of encompassing any type of genre as long as it's structured in a certain way "verse , hook, verse/bridge hook"
There are hip hop "pop" songs, there are country "pop" songs, there used to be a huge wave of rock "pop" music (Avril Lavigne, Paramore, Linking Park etc). So their discussions around "what is pop" always confuse me when to me it has always been kinda obvious.
Now when talking about "pop stars" i agree with Rory, it has to do with numbers and recognizability more than anything.

You don't become a popstar based on just numbers. you get numbers for a song. and you try to recreate the situation that lead to those numbers. also, the type of visuals that you choose will speak to whether or not you are fully immersed in the recreating of the same situation to attain the same results. Popstar life is a formulated life. you attempt to make a hit, then keep recreate from a similar template. Da Baby does that with all songs so far.
@ designer is/was a popstar. It is not the first song/hit that makes you a popstar. It is your quest for another hit in a similar vein to the original hit or someone else's original hit. A person who gets hit songs written for them is a popstar. If you attempt to recreate a hit song from a previous formula, then you are a popstar or at the very least, an aspiring popstar. You are then more focused on getting a hit, rather than a body of work that speaks to many facets of life.
@ Also... An artist's ability to sell records at astronomical levels does not make he/she a popstar. It makes that artist a Superstar. A popstar is a type of artist. A superstar is an artist that has a massive fan base. I figured that was were the confusion was coming in.
