Rhoads was the reason I got a degree in classical music. HUUUUGE influence on my life. I play nothing like him but he was one of the ones who took rock music to a totally different and (for lack of a better word) intellectual level, while avoiding being stuffy and pompous about it. He rocked. Great, great album, as was "Diary of a Madman". Never a fan of the production of those records though. Compared to other albums of the era, I found them to be kind of thin sounding. I always wonder what it would have been like if capturing that band with the same care and approach as early Van Halen was done. Subjective I know.

Ozzy and Randy where probably the most important people in shaping my drive to play music. I was keyboard / vocalist when I saw them in 81 at the Poughkeepsie Civic Center. The next day I bought a guitar !!!!! Later I saw them at Music Mountain in NY and Randy did a sound check before the show. As I listened in the parking lot he launched into a solo that wove key changes and modes in a tapestry that defy description. If I had a time machine I would go back to those concerts in a loop till I died .

I never thought this would happen! Ozzy, Randy, and Zakk are why I begged for my first guitar. Dad took me to an Ozzy concert when I was 3. He wore these bib overhauls so I could hold onto the straps and stand in his back pockets. I think the second half of the show I was on his shoulders. I begged for a guitar after that. It's all I wanted. It's all I could think about. My 4th birthday was a few months after the concert, and they got me my 1st guitar. I played it it non-stop, fell asleep with it, and eventually made a career with it.

I saw the Blizzard of Oz tour in Montreal at the St. Denis Theatre. Admittedly, I knew of Black Sabbath but knew little of Ozzy Osbourne. I had heard he released a solo album but that was about it. I was visiting at the time, and heard the concert ads on the rock radio station. I liked what I was hearing so I told my grandmother I was going to go to this concert. I was around 16 years old. While standing in the line to buy a ticket, the people in front of me sparked up a hash joint. They were French, could speak little English, but I understood what they were offering when they passed it to me. After a couple of puffs, I thanked them and we went in. The band rocked my world!!! And I was flying high!! Ozzy wore his top with the frills, and along with the band, put on an incredible performance. I knew that what I was experiencing that night was special. Randy’s solos were mind blowing. I bought the CD the next day. I still have the tour shirt that I bought at the concert. Later that night I tried to explain to my grandmother how amazing the concert was. She was pleased I went.

you dont know how lucky you were to have seen this show....this was the show that REALLY put Randy Rhoads on the map. The Montreal show was recorded and replayed 2 weeks later on the KING BISCUIT FLOWER HOUR program. I had seen the band in May in Detroit..2 and half months earlier, and the difference in how Randy played in just those few months was astonishing. While the Detroit show was great, the Monteal show is much heavier and flashy..Randy just thundered...heaviest guitar playing i ever heard. After this, everybody knew just how special a player he was. Man, how i wish they had video taped this show....

The music Randy, Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake created was absolutely brilliant. Bob Daisley never gets the credit he deserves from the Ozzy camp for writing the lyrics we all know and sing along to. I would’ve loved to see what that 3rd album would’ve been like had Randy and Bob been able to work on it. RIP Randy. My favorite musician.

In college I once put my boogie outside of my 3rd floor on campus apartment and played Crazy Train at ear splitting volume during a mini riot that was going on because they stopped serving beer at the on campus tavern in our dorm area. Lifeson was doing the neo-classical hard rock thing before Randy... Because Alex was inspired by players from prog bands like Yes and Genesis who were doing it before him. Randy was a brilliant player and writer but there's been a lot of historical revisionism surrounding his influence on music.

    • @kobuk
      @kobuk 2 роки тому

@@termsofusepolice For me, Randy wrote really cool parts that were a mix of blues playing with classical influence that were challenging and fun to play. I just thought they were all really great guitarists and song writers and I wanted to emulate that. Now that I am into recording I dissect the tone a lot more and find Randy's tone on records pretty horrible (which is really unfortunate for his legacy) but I still think the parts he wrote are as fun to play today as they were when those records came out.

fantastic that you went over the intended name of the band and how it happened to Ozzy's namme.
The laywer who negotiated Ozzy's deal with CBS, Steve Machat, wrote a book called Creating of Ozzy Osbourne from the altars of Black Sabbath, He will attest that the band was called Blizzard of ozz until he got Ozzy signed to CBS and because the other 3 guys had lawyers, he decided Ozzy was the only guy he could deliver.
Those first two albums were legally recorded as Blizzard of ozz. Ozzy's solo career started March 19, 1982

Heaven & Hell was probably the most "important" hard rock/metal record ever and ill tell you why. The so called first wave of hard rock/metal was over...Sabbath had fired Ozzy, Zeppelin had broken up and Deep Purple also. That kind of music was considered "over", Van Halen's first record in 1978 was very good, yet by 1980, they really went to more of a "pop" sound...they were by no means "metal". Bands like REO, STYX, JOURNEY were the big bands by then...and disco and new wave were also topping the charts. When Sabbath came out with H&H, and it did so well, it proved that metal was NOT over and was kind of like a bridge to the early 80's when Ozzy and Randy just tore it up and the rest in history.

    • @jppagetoo
      @jppagetoo 4 місяці тому

@@randallrhoads3271 From the American band perspective all that is true. The Europeans were on a metal march by 1980. The Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, and others led the way with New Wave of Brittish Heavy Metal. Hard rock was being reformed and Sabbath was in the thick of it for sure.

I never thought of this as an album that changed music, but the way you frame it here, I have to agree. Excellent work. It created the language that was used later in speed metal. Rhodes was, to me, the perfection of the style debuted by Eddie Van Halen, taken to a new level. Ozzy and Randy were building on Eddie's style, but they made the sound unique-- and Randy's fills were a signature of that turn. Maybe this was the first of the 80's metal sound.

Bloody love Ozzy and Sabbath, and with that said, of course my personal favourite is the Iron Man: Tony Iommi, but Randy is surely an inspiration and i love the songs they made together. And yes, Crazy Train was one of the first riffs I learned to play, such a classic for guitarists. Also, such a treat to hear the isolated tracks from those songs!

Thank you for doing this one, Warren. Blizzard was my first cassette tape when I was in elementary school (mom obviously had no idea what the record store dude was recommending LOL). And by high school, I was spending hours every day with the songbook for Tribute which featured most of those songs from Blizzard. Randy was a force to be reckoned with, and Ozzy is a one-of-a-kind frontman. Randy really became a foundational part of how I play the guitar, even if I'm not exactly banging out classic metal tunes in my mid 40s. He taught me a lot, directly and indirectly. Cheers, and thanks again!

Randy was amazing. He changed my life, when I was 15 I heard the so,o from over the mountain and it blew me away. I’m now 49 and been a guitar player since that day. He inspired me to be a musician and get a music degree. I never got the chance to see him live as he past away before I ever new who he was. Both blizzard and diary are amazing albums. The chemistry’s been the whole. And is just amazing. Albums like these are a combination for multiple talented individuals who all need to be given credit for there success including max Norman. There will never be another blizzard of ozzy. God bless Randy rhoads.

Great video Warren! It was the solo on Over The Mountain that I first heard Randy play. Then a few weeks later I read that he died. You are right though...it was Randy and Eddie for me (with a little Jeff Beck thrown in as well).

Wow another great Video from the one and only Warren Huart! So good my friend. I discovered Randy Rhoads on the Ozzy Tribute album and still feel that album captured Randy at his absolute best, his playing is so musical and loose on that album, like the wheels are just about to come off the train, barely hanging on! . The live version of crazy train is still the best IMO, the way he makes that guitar scream those notes in the beginning is unreal. Gives me chills up my back!
And I agree with you Warren, Black Sabbath’s first album is a beast, what a record! Their best for sure

Stellar video per usual Warren. I actually never learned the Crazy Train line but watching this I felt like playing along and now I think I got it down haha. One thing I like is during the Mr Crowley solo you can here the acoustic strumming of Randy's guitar. I love when things like that bleed into the microphone. You never notice it usually but always something cool

Great vid as always Warren. Just one thing plse - Sharon was not around for Blizzard of Ozz recording and she did NOT recruit the band and Randy. Sharon's brother was actually managing the band at that stage. Sharon came into the picture while Diary was being recorded when her brother said he could no longer manage the band. Slaughter bassist Dana Strum was the one who found Randy for Ozzy and first introduced them when Ozzy went to LA with a list of guitar players to check out. Also, during the first 'meeting' they did not actually see each other. Ozzy listened to Randy behind dark glass window at a rehearsal room while he was very drunk and almost asleep, the two did not meet. He met Randy in person the next day at his hotel. Sharon was instrumental in sacking Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake after Diary (while they were both away on a short vacation) and just before the North America tour. Rudy Sarzo had about 10 days to learn the set before the tour. We can thank Dana for Randy, not Sharon. Cheers and thank you :-)

13:31 I never recognized just how absolutely filthy the bass tone is on this song! I guess I've never heard it isolated before, but it sits so perfectly into the mix that the actual tone of the bass never really jumped out at me before now. It's absurdly dirty and brilliant!

When I was a kid, my family and I flew to Los Angeles for vacation. It was night when we got there and as we were taking a taxi to the hotel, there was a huge billboard of the Blizzard Of Oz cover on the way. I had no idea what it meant, but I knew it must be awesome. When I finally heard the album years later, I was glad to confirm my belief.
Thank you for another great video!

At the intro, i have to say thank you !
From an old guy's POV, have to say i bought the ST Black Sabbath album in '70 when i was 13.
Bought everything with Ozzy to Vol IV. A friend bought later titles but i'd pass.
Sorta gave up but as a subscriber to Rolling Stone magazine, an issue shows up with a review for Blizzard Of Ozz.
It was so good, i jumped into my car after just getting home from work to go buy it. I remember this like it was yesterday.
The album did not disappoint. Stellar !!

I sing in an Ozzy Tribute band Crazy train is the last song we perform and the crowd waits for it. along with Mr. Crowley and we mix in Sabbath songs like NIB and war pigs, I can tell you how much fun it is to do this great music behind some really talented musicians. thanks for the detailed look into this amazing record . Randy RIP

One of my all time favourites for sure! Very happy to see you give credit to the unsung Lee Kerslake & Bob Daisley. Sharon gets deserved credit here as well.
However, it should be noted that she made the decision to pull Kerslake and Daisley off the re-release 20 years ago. The replacing them with the Faith No More drummer, and the Suicidal Tendencies bassist. Dirty move, in my estimation, just because these guys wanted their due credit. Unfortunately that is part of this fantastic album's legacy.
Great presentation as always. Thanks for sharing

Please note, Sharon did Not recruit that band. She was not around for the Blizzard album. Her brother was managing them then. She came in during Diary (and so could Not have recruited the band), and sacked Bob and Lee before the Diary North America tour. And Dana Strum found Randy for Ozzy and introduced the two.

@@brookt3497 Thank you Brook. Sharon does everything she can to deny Lee and Bob of their full credit. Sharon works tirelessly at minimizing their contribution because of the extensive lawsuits that had been going on for years. If Sharon made any mention of their contributions to the music, she knew that it would compromise her position in court saying that their involvement was minimal. She has been and always will be a snake. Sharon is a good example of someone who possesses no talent, yet wants to be seen as special. Sharon was not special, those guys that wrote that music together were special. I've read parts of her "biography" and it is laughable! She is so desperate to been seen as a creative force, yet possesses none of the talent or skill needed to be viewed as legitimate. It's sad, cause Lee is dead.

Randy Rhoads (Tribute album) was what got me into guitar and liking music, instead of the dull piano that I couldn't get into at the time. It was also the first tab book I bought, seeing how complex it was and how he just rolled it off so easily. Dunno about anyone else, but hearing the solo on its own brought tears to my eyes (or ears!). Thanks, Warren :)

My favorite song on the record is "Revelation Mother Earth." I remember being 12 or 13 and just getting into Ozzy's music and loving it. Then Randy died, VERY tragically. As much as I love Van Halen, it's fair to say that if Randy was still alive today, absolutely NOBODY would be able to touch him. We'd ALL need to find a different line of work. You know that most of the times when Randy would go for classical lessons, he'd end up GIVING the lesson instead of getting one. Then he'd tell Ozzy, "And I PAID for it." You probably also know that Randy was NOT a Black Sabbath fan, which to this day I think is really weird that he would end up playing with Ozzy. Ozzy was very fortunate to team up with heavy metal's most pioneering guitarists ever. Prune the tree of heavy metal and Black Sabbath would be the last branch left. Yeah, you should DEFINITELY do a segment on the first Black Sabbath record, if you haven't.
