Marc Bolan’s T. Rex initially formed as Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1967. Rapidly establishing themselves as darlings of the underground scene, thanks to an exhilarating blend of pixie whimsy and idiosyncratic song structures, that hippy duo - Bolan and drummer pal Steve Peregrin Took - metamorphosed into T. Rex in 1970 and became the pioneering spirit of the emergent glam rock movement, which Bolan jumped on to just before his friend David Bowie.
While retaining some of the mystic impetus of their first forays the new look T. Rex were increasingly electric and made themselves well-loved fixtures in concert halls and on Top of the Pops. Marc was killed in a car crash in 1977 but he’s left us with a legacy of superbly quirky music whose style and class continue to captivate listeners and influence the present-day bands.
They broke the mould when Marc Bolan burst onto the unsuspecting ears of Londoners at the Electric Garden in 1967 but the little chap from Stoke Newington rarely stuck in any one place long enough for the pieces to be put back together again.
Electric Warrior (1971) could be cited as Britain’s first total glam rock epic. It was such a gas that the band filled the old Empire Pool in Wembley for two heady shows in March 1972 with Beatle Ringo Starr filming the phenomenon for posterity as part of the Born To Boogie movie. In fact, even the usually hard to impress John Lennon had name-checked Bolan favourably - but it was Marc’s ongoing rivalry with Bowie that became the Beatles vs. Stones battle of the bands back then.
“Get It On” was the second chart-topper for T. Rex on the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, it was retitled “Bang a Gong (Get It On)” to avoid confusion with a song of the same name by the group Chase.
The track was recorded at Trident Studios, London, and the piano on the record was performed by either Rick Wakeman or Blue Weaver. Mark Paytress notes that both pianists may have played separate parts on the song, with Wakeman contributing only the piano glissandos that feature several times throughout the song. Wakeman, who was desperate for work at the time to pay his rent, had bumped into Bolan in Oxford Street, who offered him the session.
Six months after his final album release in 1977, Bolan died in that fateful crash, taken far too young at just 29. His legacy is significant. At one time in 1973 T. Rex records were shifting a reported 100, 000 copies a day! He played twin necked guitar alongside his mate Jeff Lynne on the Electric Light Orchestra’s Ma-Ma-Ma-Belle, dashed off sessions with Ike and Tina Turner and even buried the hatchet with David Bowie when the two titans of teen appeared together on the TV show Marc in 1977.
Bolan’s influence would have amused him since the punk kids aside he has inspired everyone from Morrissey and Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Guns ‘n’ Roses, The Replacements, Power Station, San Francisco great Ty Segall and Oasis.

Men at Work
As a kid I met Marc a few times, my Dad was a friend of his parents, he gave me signed albums and other stuff. Gave me a copy of Lord of the Rings, I have fond memories of Marcs parents, his Dad would get me in a headlock and rub his knuckles on the top of my head, I bumped into Marcs parents in a Hotel a while after he died and his Dad remembered me although he hadn’t seen me for many years. Lovely Gentleman.

Yes. I knew Marc’s parents as well. Marc’s dad let me sit in Marc’s Rolls Royce in 1974 when it was parked outside their house in Putney. Before I left, his dad gave me an envelope with Marc’s signature and also a pair of his shoes.

Rick Wakeman confirms your story. He talks about this on his channel. He was a jobbing studio keyboard player at the time, not the star he became. He was asked to do the glissandos, which he did and was paid enough to cover his rent for a week, which he didn't have without this. He says that he said to Marc that Marc could have done the glissandos and Marc's reply was 'Yeah, but then you couldn't have paid your rent'. Marc did Rick a favour. Great bloke.

Marc Bolan was a real shooting star. he was born to be a Rock and Roll sensation. and he got there and then he suddenly died in auto accident. women simply adored him. he spent a weekend at Eric Clapton's place getting a guitar tutorial. to bring his guitar skills up to snuff. there interview with a janitor that worked cleaning up after the concerts. and he said the women were so crazy about him. that they would pee their pants when he would rush the front of the stage. and drop to his knees and almost slide off the stage into the audience. he was definitely a sensation like no other. Marc Bolan and T Rex were something else.
The Electric Warrior album is flat out amazing!

People forget how young he was. He didn’t live to 30. He had years and years ahead of him to reinvent himself and he would have, he was brilliant. I’ve always loved him massively.

I was gutted when he died. Bolan was still about, still relevant to me, current, almost lauded by a lot of the punk community. I couldn't believe he'd gone and so abruptly. His influence was enormous - I think most of the late seventies Punk bands grew up listening to Bolan, Slade, T.Rex, and Roxy. To this day I hear people discussing them and their songs still pop up all over the place. Bolan lives on in the music. Let's never forget him.
Sweet are one of the most underrated bands of this or any other era. I used to think until recently that they were just another Glam Band. The more I listened to their music the more surprised I was. Very talented musicians and like Marc Bolan were acknowledged as a huge influence on many supergroups.
If you haven't already done so, then do yourself a favour, and listen to their back catalogue. Although the great Mike Chapman wrote and produced many of their songs they also wrote many of their own. eg Love Is Like Oxygen and Fox On The Run.@@mike04574
What Bolan did in his short time, dwarfs what most artists ever accomplish in their lifetime. Being both creator of glam, a godfather of punk, and traversing many genres, whether it was folk; hard rock, psychedelic folk, classic rock etc. His influence and legacy have no bounds. Simply *timeless.*

This song was at number 1 in the UK when I was being born. I refused to come out when "Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep" was number 1. I held on.

Mother got me Electric Warrior for my 14th birthday. It hit the radio months later and I thought my mom was cool to get the album for me.

Wow T Rec one of my favorite souls that was lost to the world of MUSIC.
I learned to play guitar sitting on my mate's bed playing along to "Electric Warrior". Decades later, my son bought the album and played it. I picked up a guitar and played the first five tracks off straight. He sat there with his jaw dropped and asked, "How did you do that?" ;-)

First time I heard T Rex was underground radio around 1970. I bought their first album with short name for my brother's birthday, we both became huge fans. I remember hearing Get It On as a Jr in HS. Still sounds great.
One of those perfect rock'n roll tunes!. When you hear those first 4 bars and the drums kick in, it just captures the essence and attitude of that era perfectly!. The rhythm section is exactly as it should be, with Bolan's golden lead voc performance!

If I could go back to that night he died and save him, I totally would. To me he's just as influential as The Beatles so I'm surprised how underrated he is nowadays, but I love him I think he was amazing ❤ I wish I could've seen T Rex perform or better yet meet Marc.
He was making a comeback just before he died and I know he had so much more to give us. He didn't deserve to die so young and so tragically. He'll always be a legend ❤

I saw Tyrannosaurus Rex at Middle Earth in London in '67 or '68. They were opening for someone, I don't remember who. Marc sat on the floor and played acoustic guitar while being accompanied by a guy on bongo drums. I mainly remember that song Deborah.

Steve Took's first show: September 23, 1967 Middle Earth, Covent Garden, London, ENG (first gig as duo with Steve Porter, now called Steve Peregrin Took, supporting Denny Laine's Electric String Band & The Picadilly Line at Middle Earth, which was previously the Electric Garden. The evening was compared by Disc Jockey and journalist John Peel, who mentioned 'the strange and tomorrow songs of Tyrannosaurus Rex' in his next Perfumed Garden column of the underground magazine, International Times)

Mr. Visconti has been part of many of my favorite lps. Genius imo.
I saw them at Motherwell town hall in 69, Mickey on Bongos, Marc on acoustic, cross legged on the stage. Beard of Stars had just been released. That show blew my 15 year old mind! They played 'The Wizard' , 'By the light of a magical moon' among others, and finished the show with an electric version of 'Elemental Child' with Mickey on bass. They were on they're way up. The next time I saw them was in '71 at Glasgow Apollo (Greens Playhouse) after 'Get it on and Jeepster' were released, at the the height of their fame, with the full band. The place was packed and 'T-Rexstasy' was in in full bloom. The last time I saw them was at Motherwell Civic center in '76 around the release of 'Futuristic Dragon'. The crowds had diminished, there had been no hits for years, and they were bringing people in off the the street to try to fill the not-so-large-hall. Marc was overweight and not at his best, and Gloria was playing keyboards and backing vocals. I can't remember who else was in the band. I emigrated to Canada in summer of 77, shortly before he died, and when that happened, it shook me. I had always thought I would meet him someday. Still, who would have thought that 'Get it On' would be as popular as it is, 50 years later!

Welcome to Canada (a bit late, I am). Thanks for sharing your experience of those shows.
I never got to see Marc perform. When he died, it affected me more than losing Elvis, as I knew that I would never see him perform live. When we went to visit London in 2018, we took a private mini-bus rock and roll tour. The driver showed us many interesting sites, including Marc's last house and I asked him to show me the shrine at Gipsy Lane. The Slider has been my favourite record for nearly fifty years, it still kicks ass.
A wonderful reflection, thank you. So sad to think of him going from being such a star to someone who they needed to drag people off the street to fill a modest venue. Such is life and fame, no?

It was 1973, I was 16 and mu English wasn’t very good. In those days you couldn’t just translate online, so it took a while to understand his lyrics. But I was in love. Still like his music!
Hot Love, was the song that was hitting the charts,reminds me of a girl I met at a school camp when I was 11yrs old,I still think of that girl today. But the memory of happy times & a great era for music. Hot Love was the song that started the 70s all
I listen to the lyrics in songs from that era, especially bands like T.Rex, and I realise just how hard it would be to create anything that would compare in today's music age. I just don't think the young'uns will get it. The feel would be lost, as would the wordplay. But there is no denying the massive effect these things have had on music. Especially players like me.

Saw T=Rex perform in Memorial arena Victoria B.C. Canada. It was near the end of his carreer approx 1975 and he was quite heavy. The air was blue with pot smoke, and a good time was had by all. I fondly remember his music.

Saw em at the Michigan Palace on New Years eve 1974 /75 what a show as stoned as I was I still remember his first tune, Metal Guru he slid down off of a rising star lit with bright light bulbs, My favorite album was by far the Slider.

Visconti tells a great anecdote about recording it New York with Bolan's ass hanging out of his busted pants and stamping his Cuban Hells on the floor while playing which gives that stomping sound on the intro and outro...

Been a massive fan since 1971 his music changed my life him and George best my first crush and pin ups. My flat is a shrine to Marc And t.rex. He was way before his time he brought glitter glam and the best music Everest still very much missed but the music lives on sure was my teenage dream and my middle age dream
I used to work with a guy who grew up in England during the T. Rex craze, he said that their songs were so easy to learn because they were all in the same key and used the same chords
T-rex is such an interesting band to me. Really deserve the credit they get! Great work as always man!

So right and yet he influenced so many, Elton John, Bowie, there is definitely a bit of Bolan in Prince and listen to Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me by U2 and tell me that's not T.Rex!
The fact is Marc Bolan was a perfect example of a shooting star no one comes closer. and he knew it in an interview he said that he knew he was going to be famous. and he also knew that he was going to die. the interviews are right here on UA-cam.

I never heard of T-Rex (I'm from Colombia) until I saw Billy Elliott (the movie) where T-Rex is the mayor part of the Soundtrack. After this I started looking more into their sound and was blown away. Thank you so much for this content.

I saw Zappa in the fall of '72 at the Kennington Oval- he griped a bit in a few cryptic asides. I later read that Flo and Eddie leaving the band and taking Aynsley Dunbar with them was the source of Zappa's comments. A few weeks later Flo and Eddie played one of the Sundowns. All through the show they teased "Bang a Gong", then closed the show with it. I never knew they did the backing vocals until watching this video- their cover was more than just goofing around. Great work!

The beautiful simplicity of Get it On's guitar arrangement is the key to its timeless, hypnotic quality. Plus a reminder to songwriters that their guitar arrangements do not have to be fussy or overcomplicated to stand out. I hear a lot of Marc's economical approach in some of Prince's songs like Kiss, When Doves Cry, and especially Cream - which was a nod of appreciation toward T.Rex's sound.
Well now I'm starting to think of the song Cream as an updated Get it On

This song remains among the songs that continue to be true classics. It hasn't diminished whatsoever over the years. It retains the freshness to stand up to repeated playing. I had to introduce this to my granddaughter as an example of good music that will be played as long as rock-n-roll continues.
Growing up in the 80s I was hooked on the Power Station cover of Get It On. I still love that version with its thunderous drums and Robert Palmer’s super cool voice. But since then I’ve grown to appreciate the groovy brilliance of Bolan’s original.

Everybody is saying “ Cool Cool Song ” but that’s what “ GET IT ON” was! I grew up in Chicago and Texas and in Tx the black radio stations went off at like 7 pm so I would listen to the White stations and play my guitar to this kind of music, brings back memories

I was a fan of T.Rex whilst at school back in the early 70's , i used to record off of the radio back then, but spent my pocket money on my very fist album purchase on cassette, T.Rex the Slider.

@Bat Eats Moth I've never been much for recreational drugs. Who needs acid when you have The Slider? It doesn't take much exposure to that album for me to believe (among other things) that gurus are made of metal, and that seas are not only cosmic but rather like bumble bees. Then I got to thinking. What if the soundtrack to my life is even better with acid? So I decided to take the plunge and find out. I played the album on repeat all night long in a very dark room while tripping my brains out. My one and only experience with acid, a memory I will always treasure.

I am a founding member of the glam rock band "Wig Wam Glam" and I only wanted to play T-Rex and Bowie tracks but the rest of the band preferred to do Bay City Rollers and Alvin Stardust which I thought was a drag.

I mainly know T-rex from Teenage Dream, which was on the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack, and I spent many days listening to it and that ending is great.

'The WIzard' is hilarious. So that's where the outro stuff came from. I grew up with this song, and decided to learn it a year or two ago. So much feel and attitude. Visconti is great. I heard some really good interviews recently.
So good! Marc was unbelievably inventive, his ability to write the perfect Pop/Rock song is virtually unrivalled!
I think the biggest T.Rex fans would roll their eyes at "Get It On" or "Jeepster" when the catalog of songs is so rich that those two songs are akin to casual Queen fans talking about Bohemian Rhapsody as if it was the best song they every wrote.
Maybe! Queen are my favourite band, they are why I do music! And, Bohemian Rhapsody is my favourite song ever! I think it’s a masterpiece of songwriting, performance and production and has never been bettered! Haha I also love everything Queen did!

This is one of the most technical and nerdy editions of this great series about songs that changed music but still really interesting. One aspect I always find fascinating is how many musicians, engineers and producers were actually involved in making the completed single, compared to when the band of only 4 would have us believe they were creating All that amazing music in their top of the pops performances😀🎸.

I think it depends, T Rex we’re only a two piece so the rest of the band were session players, Bowie was a solo artist etc. However, many bands like The Beatles, Zeppelin etc did have occasional additional members but didn’t need them except for creative reasons. When I was about 13 years young I came into possession of Electric Warrior and really loved Bang a Gong. I kept and played that album for another 10 years until one day my snotty wise ass little brother who was teaching himself electric guitar decided he hated the song and the band, and so he scratched the fuck out of the album, both sides, with the sharp edge of a Hot Wheels car. He really laid into it with what had to be white hot rage, the gouges were so deep.
When I found out what he'd done I didn't pummel him to a bloody mound because I just felt so sorry for him, that he somehow wasn't able to appreciate the subtle genius of that funky slick tune. His loss.
Anyway, he plays pretty good guitar but still has questionable taste when it comes to genuinely cool & unique artists, such as still not being down with The Dead, or Frank Zappa, or Jean Luc Ponty, or Nick Drake, or Sade, or the first Pink Floyd album. That one is WILD. : )
P.S. I believe the expression is "...can't be *over*stated," and not *under*stated. That's an oopsie.
There can't be too many great pops songs like this that have a drone note from start to finish.
Great video and glad to see Marc getting some recognition on my favourite channel.
Two things I'd like to point out that may be interesting:
Part of what makes the main intro riff special is the fact that it is not just guitar, the bass plays with it emphasising the key notes (E - C#). This is often missed. In the demo version you can hear Marc ask Steve to come in with him at the start.
Also The original demo chorus chords were G Major to A Minor.. :-/ (Sounds very odd and this was changed on Tony's suggestion). And in the release, you can hear that the A chord really doesn't have a 3rd in it, especially in the first chorus.
Not trying to be pedantic here, I just thought this was interesting.

Excellent video and so well delivered. I was a young kid who was only into soul and reggae at the time, but I thought WTF?! when I first heard Get It On. It had such a groove. It wasn't cool for kids in my musical circle to admit to liking any rock/pop chart hit. We were such little snobs. However, after tentatively sounding each other out, I realised we all loved Marc and T REX LOL!
