For musicians and fans, the Van Halen’s signature sound revolutionized what it meant to play hard rock in the late seventies (and the band would continue to pave the way throughout the eighties). However, as is often the case for music and musicians that go on to change history, the critics who reviewed Van Halen at its debut in 1978 didn’t quite know what to do with it or how to place it. All they knew was that it was big and it was loud. Robert Christgau wrote in the Village Voice, “For some reason Warners wants us to know that this is the biggest bar band in the San Fernando Valley … The term becomes honorific when the music belongs in a bar. This music belongs on an aircraft carrier.” Richard Reegel of Cream even called the band dinosaurs and predicted they would find their “evolutionary fulfillment in a quick extinction.” Van Halen’s massive presence - in sound, in energy and in volume - may have been too big for the critics of 1978, but it would be one of the most influential and defining albums of its time.
The album opens with what sounds like a warped car-horn followed by a thumping bass, announcing the commencement of the band’s hedonistic anthem, “Running with the Devil.” The song packs a hard hitting punch that showcases all of the bands talent, energy and personality. The second track, “Eruption” fully unveils the band’s dazzling guitar virtuoso. Following this unrestrained and supernatural display, the band returns to an aggressive and gutsy rendition of the Kink’s “You Really Got Me.” Eddie described the track as “Van Halenized like a jet plane.” Throughout the album, the band balances hard hitting rock and roll with colorful vocal harmonies. Roth’s whoops, screams and cheeky innuendos add another layer of personality to the tracks. From the kinetic shuffle of “I’m the one” to the old-timey opening of “Ice Cream Man” (before breaking into an explosion of heavy blues), the tracks of Van Halen blend past and present, a quality that has resulted in a seemingly timeless sonic quality to the band maintained throughout their career. It is forever, unmistakingly modern and thoroughly classic rock and roll.
Van Halen has proven to be one of the most influential debuts in rock music history, and also one of the most commercially successful rock albums of all time. It has sold over 10 million copies and been certified as a Diamond record by the RIAA. The band went on to be one of the biggest selling groups of all time, with several multi-platinum hits and even another Diamond record with the album 1984. VH1 named the band number 7 on their list of the top 100 rock artists of all time, and in 2007, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Van Halen’s first album kicked off this remarkable career with an explosion of sound, dazzling energy and spectacular musicianship, announcing to the world that Van Halen had arrived and rock and roll would never be the same.

I was playing at Gazarri's in 1981, simple group, sort of like a Bob Seger, it was solo time, I grabbed a few pitiful bends, picked a couple mid energy runs, looked up and David Lee Roth is standing in front of me with his thumbs up, in full stage attire. That was the day I learned about charity and helping the little guy. These guys continue this charity to this day. God Bless Them.

I interviewed the band after their first show in Portland. A year later I was living in L.A. and hanging out on Sunset. Roth saw me at the bar at Gazarri's and came over to say hi. A year later and he still recognized me and we had a nice chat. Cool guy. A friend of mine, Todd Jensen, ended up taking Michael Anthony's place for a tour or two after playing in Roth's band when he went solo. Todd like the guy too.

That is a great comment, or description. I love it man. That sonofabitch made me play for up till 6-9 hours a day for about 4 years. Then I had to balance working and playing live and practicing still. It just got to be too much. I could get close, but his rhythm playing was the thing nobody can really copy. It is actually kinda hard for me to watch him now. I still miss him. Yes we have him recorded, but it just is the knowing I cannot hear anything new from him. I am 56 and began playing in 1980. So he was there for almost my whole life. Great comment man. Perfect take on Ed, and his eternal youth and a smile from the little imp in him.

I was 14 and at boarding school when this album dropped. The guy with the best stereo in our dorm cranked it the day he got it; from beginning to end, all of us were completely blown away and could not get enough. I can still remember our faces, hearing Runnin' with the Devil fading in and the feel of just not knowing what the hell was gonna happen next for the next 40 minutes or so. I've always loved music of all sorts, but that album woke something up in all of us that day. Rock was definitely...different now.

    • @k-matsu
      @k-matsu 3 роки тому +3

I was a freshman in college, and was at the record store buying a few albums to play to try to impress the other guys in the dorm when I had my first "room party". I already had a few "heavy" albums like ZZ Top's Tres Hombres, Atomic Rooster and Humble Pie, so when I told the guy at the store what I was shopping for, he pulled out VH1 and said "This is the only one you need".
I got back to the dorm, and put it on (low volume) to check out the sound. After about 30 seconds I was so freaked out that I rushed over to the turntable, set the needle back to the start, and cranked it up to eleven.
By the time David pronounced the words: "I live my life like there's no tomorrow..." there were about 30 guys packed in the doorway with their jaws on the floor and eyes wide in total amazement. "What the ____ are you listening to?" It was the most amazing musical moment of my young life.
By the time the party "started", we had already listened to it front-to-back several times, and every time I changed the record, someone would say "Put that Van Badass album on again."

Man, listening to Ice Cream Man's isolated electric guitar rhythm go into the solo is just unreal. That solo has always been one of my favorite Van Halen solos. It is the past meets the future in less than a minute. The precision and flat out adrenalin in that solo is unmatched. We lost a legend for sure. Thank you Eddie for the all of the chills!!!

the brown sound conjures images of a round smooth tone, but Eddie's tone was bright, cutting yet not piercing or fizzy. Brilliant album, great songs that anyone can appreciate. as explained over and over by Eddie, the brown sound he spoke of was not his. It was Alex's. He wanted the snare to sound like a warm log when hit. People continue to screw this up. His guitar sound was excruciatingly bright as explained by Michael Anthony who had to stand next to it night after night.

Hearing these isolated tracks is an unimaginable luxury. Thank you so much, Warren.
Our drummer, upon discovering Van Halen I, brought a cassette to practice and said listen to this. As Eruption erupted from the speakers, he demanded to know what's he doing? I offered, "It sounds like he's playing a pipe organ or some such - you'd need two hands to reach those arpeggios." Then he looked at me with distain and accusatorily demanded, "Why don't you play like that?!?!" I would have countered with, "Why don't you play like Neil Peart?" But, wouldn't you know - he actually could. And thus began my life long fascination and absolute guitar player crush with the most influential jaw dropping make you smile 'spank the plank' 'string strangler' to come along in a long time. Not to denigrate any of the present nor past masters of their craft - worthy all, but whenever Eddie and the Boys are on the radio or turntable - it's Christmas! Writing this brought tears to my eyes as much as his music brought joy to my ears.

💖Thanks for this wonderful tribute to the Mighty Van Halen.🙌 When I purchased this album in 1978 it was the only thing I listened to for over a week, Whenever I was home, on my turntable and when I was driving in my car in the cassette player. Even when I spent a weekend signwriting a van I had my car nearby playing it back to back to back....I just could not get enough, the sound just blew my mind. 🎵Two points I'd like to mention Warren: It was David Lee Roth who played the acoustic intro on Ice Cream Man, and on Atomic Punk Eddie is not scratching his pick along the strings, he is rubbing his palm up and down. I'm 64 in a few days time and I still find it hard to listen to just one track from this album....I need to listen to it as a complete package. 🎵🎵🎵

After Ed passed, I listened to the 'Zero' demos, and the car horn intro, is actually the outro to 'House of Pain', which became the last track on '1984'. On the demo, the sound is used sample style in 'HOP', and segues into 'RWTD', so that is the first track-first album, last track-last album (Roth era) already worked out on the demo, recorded in 77. An 80s anecdote from someone that lived 'em: MOST of the music listening public at the time of Van Halen's release of _1984_ in January of 1984, including us teens of the time, had NOT heard of Van Halen. There are a lot of reason for that, but not important here. Only those VERY in to hard rock had heard of them. Even most lovers of Zeppelin hadn't heard of them. Most of us were under the initial impression that _1984_ was Van Halen's DEBUT album.
With the release of _1984,_ radio stations began to play a lot of earlier Van Halen. Wow! It was like being given a mountain of gold and then the several hills of gold leading there. A great album with even more where that came from to discover. That was so unusual, as one usually had to wait for the next album to get more of what a band had to offer--not with Van Halen.
For a time, Van Halen's earlier albums became very hard to get. I knew people, teens, that ventured into the ghettos of NYC, Philadelphia, Trenton, etc. in an attempt to snag earlier Van Halen albums that were gathering dust in music stores there. I heard of a road trip by some teens at another school that drove out to Detroit, and points in between, to do the same. Van Halen exploded and got HUGE nearly overnight.
A very exciting time, album, and band.
_The 80s: Lived 'em. Loved 'em. Miss 'em._

It's difficult to describe why Eddie's playing is so special to someone who doesn't hear it. It's like trying to explain Euler's, Neumann's or Babbage's work to someone that doesn't understand math, physics or computers. You either hear, or don't, how it's completely different from anybody you've ever heard, how it's like his fingers are directly transferring emotions to your ears, as if he wasn't using guitar and music as a medium. All the little details in his rhythm and the way he plays notes.

Gate is a tool we will use when recording/ mixing a track. It is used to limit the amount of background noise (from the mic) that shouldn't be on the track you are recording. So like on the plate track of that drum session, when you hear the plate sound and then it stops, from one strumming to the next one everything becomes totally silent, you can't hear the bleedings of other instruments that were playing live in the chambers next door. That makes a "clean" track for the mixing phase of the song.

So like on the plate track of that drum session, when you hear the plate sound and then it stops, from one strumming to the next one everything becomes totally silent, you can't hear the bleedings of other instruments that were playing live in the chambers next door. That makes a "clean" track for the mixing phase of the song.

Also Dire Straits Sultans of Swing came out at a similar time, different music, but just changed everything. A couple of other albums are obviously Queen, Night at the Opera.......and Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd. There are many others.

Thanks. To all those youngsters out there who are looking to make a name for themselves in the world of music: *_know your roots!!!_* It cannot possibly be overstated how important it is to understand the history of music. Even when I listen to rap or hip-hop, I notice that they're keenly aware of music in general, and will drop references (lyrically as well as musically) to those who came before. Many artists listen to something other than what they play. There have been so many awesome musicians in even just the history of modern music (since recordings became a thing). Remember: you're standing on the shoulders of giants - like Van Halen! tavi.

Glad you reference Ed's right hand technique. Agree 10,000 percent! There are so many guitarists over the decades who learned to copy his songs/solos note for note, (some quite famous too),...and yet,.. none them really sound like Ed at all. There was always something about the way he enunciated every note. Timing, swing and punch - coming from the right hand. And because of that - you listened to his guitar speak - not just play. I think there's a lesson in that.

The bleed through on the overheads and isolated tracks accentuate those little things which make live performance orders of magnitude better than recordings now: the "accidents", ambient sounds like the pick hitting the string, the buzz on the nut. Not a huge Van Halen fan but something that really hit home with me is at the ~35 minute mark Warren says he never thinks about, "Oh that's the Mixolydian mode," or "That's Dorian" that he, "Just hears music." I don't think there's a better way to describe it. That's absolutely true. Eddie wasn't a "schooled guitarist" but he certainly "schooled" a bunch of guitarist on how to play.

Great video! I can't forget the impact of hearing VH1 on me as a very young guitarist--I didn't want to accept that Eddie could do all that off the cuff as there was no way I could ever get close to that level of athleticism with tapping--but man, for guitar riffs there was so much to learn. For those who want to learn more about the early days of Van Halen, the book "Van Halen Rising" is an entertaining and credible account in my view.

  • @briangorman1079

One thing about Eddie's playing that not many people mention are his mistakes. In his playing, there are subtle mistakes, or inaccuracies, or slight missteps - whatever you want to call them, but those are part of the magic. It's not sterile or perfect - the "mistakes' added something to the character of his playing, like he was harnessing something so wild and free, that he could barely control it. And that created an incredible sense of excitement while listening to his playing. There's imperfection and even risk to it. Unbelievable.

Needless to say, the girls loved Van Halen. The whole party would come to life. Bottles of Bacardi. Bad decisions.

Fantastic piece yet again Warren, I'm loving this documentary style.
But just as an aside, as an Australian, I realise just how incredible the TV show 'Countdown' was back in the 1970s-80s and the host Ian "Molly" Meldrum (he's the guy interviewing Van Halen off camera). If you look at documentaries on Queen, they are always so reliant on Countdown clips because Molly interviewed Freddie Mercury several times. Likewise, the show followed up on the early international progress of AC/DC and that resulted in some great TV moments (that always pop up in subsequent documentaries). His friendships (and feuds) with both Elton John and Rod Stewart are legendary. In 1969 he interviewed John Lennon and Lennon basically hinted that the Beatles were going to split up, but Molly totally missed out on the scoop and only realised what he had on tape when he listened back closely to the interview some time later. As a consolation prize, he does own a copy of the Beatles White Album signed by all four members of the band as well as Yoko Ono.
