Well done!! I lived in London for part of that time period. It was so intoxicating and colorful! I love Chrissie, her music and am so glad she champions animal rights!!
Chrissie Hynde is friends with my grandma. They used to do photo shoots together, and I’m guessing on that cause my grandma has a lot of photos of her doing different kinds of fashion, and she’s in Chrissie’s book. Chrissie also sends her a box of different treats from where she is to my grandma on her birthday. Not to brag or anything, I just think that’s pretty cool
Thank goodness I had Chrissie and other Punk era ladies like Patti Smith, Debbie Harry, Joan Jett, Poly Styrene, Soiuxise Sioux, Nina Hagen, The Slits, etc. and Kate Bush who's on her own planet.
Members of Devo were also at Kent state during the shooting and inspired to form a band. Great upload on Chrissy Hyde. To my memory the 1st LP and Brass in pocket had both had the No,1 spot when I saw them here in the UK 1980.
"Time the Avenger" is one of my favorite songs of all time. I could listen to it on a loop for ages and never get tired of it. Chrissie is an amazing artist.
I don't know if I'm too old or too young to having had Chrissie on my radar. The first time I saw her name was as a guest on Rob Sterwar's "One Night Only" DVD. Thoroughly enjoyable album. She duo'd with Rob on "As Time Goes By". It was one of the highlights. And, because of stumbling over your UA-cam channel, I now know enough from your profile of Chrisie that I've designated myself an expert. (BTW what is YOUR name and where can I find some bio stuff?) I like your idea of doing a series on "Women in Music". It's gotta be a short series, won't it? LOL
Wow. I knew almost none of that about Chrissie Hynde. What an amazing life and career. I’ve never been a Pretenders fan, but I’ll give them another listen. Thanks!
I always thought she was bad-ass, but I had no idea what an incredible life she led. My mom’s last concert she attended (before passing from cancer) was the Pretenders in 2020 and she spoke of how good Chrissie was.
Love, love, love Chrissie Hynde! I thought she was the coolest of all female singers, songwriters, just raw n real, not glammed up for show! Great lyrics, great guitar, great voice, what a icon!🎶✨
I do a deep dive into the Pretenders every couple years- what a massive talent she is. I can’t help noticing the similarities between them and Morrissey. Love Morrissey as well- his solo catalog is very, very similar sounding to the Pretenders. JMO.
Ms Hynde and I grew up in Akron a few blocks apart and went to all the same schools. She's one year younger than me... so, of course, I couldn't be bothered to know some little girl younger than me. Her Vegan restaurant in Akron was great It closed a number of years ago. It was downstairs in a condo building where she kept a place in Akron. Her younger brother Terry plays Jazz Sax in and around town. Her favorite record store (and mine) is in an old shop in Highland Square in Akron, where she and I spent our Saturday's through the late 50's early 60's watching movies at the Highland Cinema growing up. Her song, "My City was Gone" is about massive Urban Renewal projects in Akron that totally changed the city from what it used to look like.
Simple Minds were pretty well known in the UK, Australia and Europe before 1985. The Breakfast Club got them wider attention in the US, and made them more mainstream.
Wow! Cool! Thanks for all that info! I bought their first album, with her in a red leather jacket & I've been a fan ever since! Boots of Chinese Rubber???? She's STILL doing it!!! ♥️♥️♥️
Her performance of The Isle of View was featured in the movie, 17 Again (with Leslie Mann). Wow-Christie good to hear we still got some of the good ones with us.
Its so interesting to learn about women I really had no clue about... kind of speaks on how it is still a bit challenging as a women musician because they arent fantasized about like their male counterparts. And Like another commenter ive also never been a huge pretenders fan but the way youve told the story of her life and the time period really adds another layer and going to now have another listen. Cant wait for more !!
Chrissie Hinds was EPIC. My post-punk college band covered 6 Pretenders tunes while working in nightclubs. They (SHE!) were THE BOMB. I was thrilled to see her appear in that biopic film. I am even more thrilled to see her fingerprints across history from Kent State and beyond. My cousin (older sister) covered the Kent State event in her high school report in the mid-'70s. Her fierce sense of justice was an inspiration to me when I was a young 'tweenager'. As a kid only about 10 years younger than Chrissie, I continue to perform, in the trenches, predominantly mainly Brasilian Jazz, but Chrissie and the lads will always remain on my iPhones.
I didn't know she lived such an interesting life. Very informative, fast paced and great narrative! Wish I got to be at one of her concerts. Now I'm going to watch Pistol!
This was a very informative video. I was a Punk in the 1980s and I didn't know the extent of her history you've outlined here. Excellent video. Could you please tell me the name of the Sex Pistols series. I've never heard of it. Cheers. 😀
I had no idea she was involved in so much culural history. As you said, she was there for all of the big moments. I'm going to read her biography now. Great video.
I have a photo of Chrissie Hynde with Ray Davies baby in NYC. I think it got published in People. She reviewed a Kinks single from " Preservation"( reprinted in " The British Invasion" book by Nicholas Shaffner. THE PRETENDERS covered Ray Davies " I Go to Sleep". Davies was interviewed in March 1984 and asked about Kerr- Hynde relationship. It was a shock to him finding out this way.Thanx! I liked her appearance on Friends show
It must of been hard for her losing her co- band members like that.. im assuming she never got involved with drugs like they did. Or at the very least she could control her usage and keep it to a minimum. The other guys werent so fortunate and its tragic. Shes been through so much in her life. But "back on the train gang" is in my opinion her best work its a song you wish would never be over. The way she says oh ohhh ohh. Its sooooo beautiful!!
It said the video was 9 minutes long, but it felt like half that. You tell the story so well that time went by fast. I hope you get to share your story telling talent on an even bigger platform some day.
Im from hereford James Honeyman Scott was virtually living with us in my mums council house before he became famous 2 weeks before jimmy died he called my mum and she warned him that she dreamed of him having an overdose 2 weeks later he was dead 😢😢
You are such a great story teller ..perhaps do a story on Australian singer Christine Joy Amphlett .songwriter and actress, best known as the frontwoman of the rock band Divinyls. She was notable for her brash, overtly sexual persona and subversive humour in lyrics .
Respect to the women of rock. I’m a big pretenders fan I heard some stories from my uncle about her giving the punks shit at CBGB she held her own in a rough crowd.
Loved her for 40 yrs. LOL She shoosed me at my first Pretenders concert because I was too loud. I couldn't help it I was on the 2nd row. She looked straight at me!! I was whooping with excitement My friend elbowed me and said She is looking at you. Then Chrissie put her finger to her mouth and shooshed me. I quieted down but At that brief moment in time I existed in Chrissie's universe. 🥰🥰 I will never forget.
This is a very good video. I knew there was a larger story behind CH, but I certainly learned a lot here. The Kent State was very sad incident in United States history. I am not going to get into assigning blame. I will just say that the US Military shooting US citizen's is sickening. Not that it hasn’t happened before, hopefully it won’t happen again. I respectfully recommend that before you as a Canadian, make statements about US actions in Vietnam, you ought to do your homework. President Nixon did not escalate the war in Vietnam. On the contrary, the peak of US troops committed to Vietnam was in 1968 under President Johnson. There were significant withdrawals of US military personnel every year from 1969 to 1973 when there were less than 100 in 1973.
Reaaly great stuff , Just a quick note that the draft was the trigger for the protests, 19 , song about the average age of the 58k US soldiers who died
There were other all female acts in the UK at the same time as Chrissy was there and punk was at its most influential. Albeit, not many. The Slits and Polystyrene come to mind. I doubt Chrissy hung out with Nancy as no-one liked her.
The "female" voices in rock I like the most are of the Ann Wilson/Chrissy Hynde/Karen Carpenter variety. Such a melancholy, sentimental quality that I find extremely attractive and dare I say--sexy!
Also used to hang out with bikers when her BF was Sgt at Arms. Used to date the prez ex wife. Wonderful black ccokney woman. Who claimed she was in part the inspiration for brass in pocket.
You’re beautiful, you the rock church I hung around with in high school and the lovely lady I listen to music with because she and her husband o n d he local cool record store. 😆
About "MY City Was Gone:" the late Rush Limbaugh used it for his intro music on his very famous show. Chrissie never went after Rush for royalties because her father was a huge fan of Rush Limbaugh and it made her Dad so happy. UNTIL Rush decided to run his mouth on the air one day, laughing and boasting about how much more he loves his intro music because it was written by a hippie left-wing vegan loon. Chrissie reached out to Mr Limbaugh. You will pay me for every single time you played my song 🎵 over 52 weeks a year for all these years, OR You can donate $10,000 to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Let's get one thing straight, Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren did not invent Punk. The original Punks where the fans going to see the Rocky Horror Show playing at the theater in the Kings Road Chelsea. McLaren's shop SEX just also happened to be in the Kings Road, and it was a fetish shop. Also The Sex Pistols were not the first Punk band, that was The Damned who where promoted by Marc Boland of T-Rex.
@@mikehunt.1609 listen honey, punk started in the States five years before it even reached London and Malcolm was the one who brought it there. New York Dolls, Iggy Pop, MC5, Television, The Velvet Underground invented punk.

The character of Chrissie's voice is so captivating - such a strong voice and the melodies with it are worlds best.
Thanks for another great vid, didn’t know much about Chrissie, what an amazing artist and remarkable woman she is.
Thanks for watching!! She's really been through it all.
Chrissie has always been one of my most favorite female singers, so unappreciated, love that she is vegan and fights for animal rights🤗
I love that/her. Chrissie!!!
The narrators voice is intolerable, most irritating noise ever
Good summary. Chrissie's book is fantastic and wonderfully informative about this era. She has lived an amazing life.

Skeeter NYC When you say you had all those women, I take it you mean you had sex with them? As "had" in that context is an euphemism for sex.
