  • I got sick of the cheap metal base that comes stock on the Harbor Freight bandsaw, so I decided to use some scrap materials to throw together a new mobile base. I also made it way easier to change pulley settings.

    Great video. A pleasure to watch you in action. I'm retired now but it was like watching myself in my younger days. Thanks.

    Very nicely done. I just bought a 1988 Enco 14" band saw that is identical to the Central Machinery 14" unit. Got it off Craigslist for $110. Very little use so I figured it was worth it for home use. Your cabinet is exactly what I have in mind for my unit. The lower base is too light duty for the saw. Great build. Thank you for the video.

    Wonderful build-thanks for sharing. It looked like the castors did not have brakes on them- did I miss it or is there another way you are using to secure the base when working? Best regards, Dave

    I'm envious of your skills. I just wish I could get my wheels balanced. My HF saw is a paint mixer.

      Thanks Mountain Teacher. The link belt helped the most with vibrations as well as giving it a stable base to mount on.

    Nice! Thanks for uploading. Was there a mods 2 video? Also, I think it would make the saw a bit more stable to use the bench casters that lowers the entire cabinet to the floor.

    Wow! Thats a lot of quality build table for a Harbor Freight Saw. Either that is saying something about the saw (very good and worth it) or at least if the saw doesn't pan out, the table will last a very long time and be used for another saw. Either way, you win.

    • @AModernMaker
      @AModernMaker  4 роки тому

      Thank you Boyd. The saw is just okay, but the stand definitely made it better!

    Just found your channel and sub'd. Also, nice to see another local guy on here that does wood working. Like your shop like your channel. Even went to check out the videos from Golden Empire Training. You guys do some crazy stuff. Best of luck.

    • @speedjunky1321
      @speedjunky1321 6 років тому

      No, just a local buy that likes building stuff in my garage.
      I just saw the shirt you had on in the video and thought I'd look it up cause it said Golden Empire....not too many of those around.
      Keep it up like your channel a lot.

    Hey man great build. I just found your channel and after watching this video I see your either a genius to comeup with all those great methods for assembling a simple stand or you watch all the same woodworkers I do. I love the Paulk bench and I see Matthias Wandel, Jimmy Diresta, and Jay Bates tips and tricks and maybe a few more too. Isn't UA-cam the greatest tool on the internet. Anyway, you got a new subscriber now. Keep up the great work.

      @AModernMaker  7 років тому +1

      +tsstn Thank you! Yes, we do watch a lot of the same channels. I like to learn and be inspired by them. Then when it comes to my own builds, I can take what I learned and add my own twist to it.

      A Modern Maker I watched several more of your videos after this one and you do indeed have a unique twist on some of my own favorites. I really like your router lift for instance. It was very effective and relatively simple. Simple is the best compliment I can give you, I think simple is brilliant. Thanks for sharing your projects on UA-cam.

    Ok I’m hooked... Nice shop and work.. 2 questions, Do you recommend the harbor freight bandsaw? And Where can I get info on the box joint jig??? Thanks man..

    • @bobbymiles4615
      @bobbymiles4615 6 років тому

      That’s a dado stack never mind... but still what are your thoughts on the bandsaw?

    • @AModernMaker
      @AModernMaker  6 років тому

      I honestly wasn’t a huge fan of it, but it depends on what you plan on doing with it. It’ll definitely get the job done though. I bought it cheap on CL so it served its purpose. I would hold out for something better on Craigslist or an estate sale or an auction. Or even save up a little more for a Grizzly. I upgraded to a Laguna so I could do more resawing and love it.

    Frankly I prefer a mobile base where you have non-directional front wheels and rear casters that raise to drop that end on solid footings.. Make the base steady and no saw wobble. Still nice job and good video.

    • @AModernMaker
      @AModernMaker  7 років тому +1

      Thank you +David Davis. That was just my temporary solution. I plan on making a different mobile base for it in the future. Stay tuned!

    Nice work and modifications it makes me laugh to know I’m not the only guy to make fingerjointed shop drawers ! Along with fronts LOL i built my Mom a hobby room in one of her houses years ago including plastic laminate countertops for her workbenches to mount her doll house furniture tools. To she told me she didnt have the heart to drill boltholes into them because they were nicer than the kitchen ones. That she had. I told her dont worry. If you need them changed i can buid you new ones in a few hours and that i scrounged thru my free stock at the shop and had enough to build her another set for free if she needed them ironically the build was what sod her house when she was ready to move it was. In the laundry room and minus the stove and refrigerator. It did look like another kitchen. I eliminated the laundry tub and installed a kitchen sink. For her to wash out her paint brushes and whatever she needed to do ? My son was hysterical one Christmas when we walked out of a store. Carrying her a new bandsaw he said Dad i bet not too many Grandmas are getting Deta Bandsaws for Christmas she still loves it and her drill press too ive actually found these tiny title table saws i keep trying to get her to try but she is. Afraid of Table saws in general as she remembers my Dad ripping plywood on a radia arm saw that didnt have a good in and out feed table set up and parts binding. And getting shot from the saw I tried to tel her that with the right equipment. And set up its way safer Of course she will bring up a couple of my buddies that have had serious Table saw injuries including a very good freind of mine that had gone thru many surgeries to sew on 3 fingers and to get them working he and i. Worked together for over 20 years as professional Woodworkers and his story is. The same as everyone else that it has happened to that it happened so fast they didn’t believe it actually happened to them

    Its a nice cabinet. But it's not a mod. A mod is something you do to the saw itself. Granted its a nice cabinet, but it's not a mod.

    • @AModernMaker
      @AModernMaker  4 роки тому

      The flimsy base it comes with is part of the saw and part of the problem with the saw. I also changed the motor mount and motor tensioning mechanism.

    • @wadepatton2433
      @wadepatton2433 4 роки тому +1

      Moving the motor and tensioning setup is "not a mod"? I disagree.

    Seems like a lot of work for what, the last thing you want a bandsaw to do is move while in use,casters are only so good, a mobil base is the way to go!
