  • Yup, came up on a nice 14" Delta bandsaw last night. Also Scored a Central Machinery 1 year ago for $40 dollars. Lets do a minor comparison between them. Still looking for a larger bandsaw, Waiting for the next deal to present itself.
I prefer to stretch my dollars as often as possible, actually I collect dollars & don't like parting with my collection so I make it last, ha...
Heading out to pick up a few new blades for my newest piece of equipment.
Delta Bandsaw model 28-203 3/4 hp 1995 ish single speed... Other one is a central machinery 2003 1hp 4 speed. Both seem to be good saws.
Time to make a bandsaw box or build a bandsaw box, which is it? Make of build? I think make is the proper terminology but I don't know...Okay, time to whip out a bandsaw box. I can resaw over 6" tall lumber with either of these saws.

Im from South Africa and bought a Delta Milhaukee for around $50 on an auction.Made in 1955.Works like a charm.I thought mine needed new bearings/sleeves cause of the noise which is similar to yours. You are satisfied with noise levels so I will also stop worrying about noise levels😂

*Worked perfectly right out of the box **MyBest.Tools** a nice compact bench bandsaw, that will work with 1/4 to 1/2 inch blades! First use was a joy, better quality than I expected for the price ! ! !*

About 25 years ago I found a Delta like that, but with an open stand and no rolling base, for $150 and I thought I got a great deal. You scored BIG TIME! That's a great saw, but definitely look for a 16" or 18" saw like my Laguna Tools 16HD, it's a resaw beast.

I have that exact saw, including the fence and mobile stand. That's an amazing deal - I don't think the seller knew what he had.
Usually the closed stand Delta's had a 1 HP motor - surprised yours is only 3/4 HP.
    Congrats.

Thanks for the video comparison, I picked up a 2001 Central Machinery on the cheap, and bought 3 new blades, and cool blocks (didnt have the upgraded roller guides like yours), and it works amazing, and a solid made in Taiwan tool. Resawed some 4" oak like a dream w 3/4" Timberwolf blade. IMO, its 90% blades and setup. Also, make sure to watch Alex Snodgrass bandsaw clinic for setup, it was a game changer for me.

I found my Delta Bandsaw on CL also and when made me drive the 60 mile round trip was that it had a kreg fence on it! Didn't pay nearly as you did (lol) but it was like if I bought the bandsaw reasonably and got the fence for free! HOLY SMOKES THESE THINGS ARE HEAVY TO LOAD!! LOL!

unreal score...$40!...I'm looking for a bandsaw ow, I just got a really good craftsman 2/3 hp drill press plus an old (1970's?) scroll saw thrown in for $50, the drill press looks like it might be a year old if that...that was a lucky score, but that saw you got for 40, might be even better!

I just scored a Central Machinery 14" bandsaw off craigslist, and it's similar to yours, but I think much older, and the differences are interesting. Mine is only a single speed, not a huge deal. There is no blade brake. My wheels have 6 spokes, I think. The trunnions under the table that support the table are shaped different. The blade guides were steel blocks. It has no black "sides" on the bottom stand, it's just open. Finally, the switch doesn't have that yellow plastic safety lock. All in all, seems like a decent saw.

  • @danielcoleman3111

No break on the HF. That is the start windings kicking back in.

  • @Papatrain77
    @Papatrain77 9 років тому

To find an older one in that shape for that kind of money was quite fortunate. The new ones just don't seem as well made. I looked at one but settled on a Grizzly 14" and once I went through the usual "finish what they didn't" that I have gone through with most Grizzley products, it's a great saw. I have found that if you can get the Grizzly products adjusted, they are quite good. Just wish they had better quality control. Most folks may never know what they have. Oh, and the correct blade made by a good company also makes the saw. Again, you may never know what you have without the proper, well made blade. Just some thoughts.

    • @12345mike6789
      @12345mike6789  9 років тому +1

i don't remember if I mentioned this in the video but the deals are the ones that you don't see because they happen so quickly they come & go sometimes in less than an hour. Just save up a few dollars & place it aside. scan the list often expecially saturday - monday, people are actively posting on their days off & be ready to jump & a drive.
Oh, on a side note a ran across a 16" powermatic 110v 220v 1.75 hp last month, it was clean but they wanted $400. Had a fence system & rolling cart, it was a 141 model i believe, it was 1 block from my work too, I spoke to the guy about it the day it was posted & guess what? I hesitated because I was doing an in-depth search for an extra day & we were in a big rain storm, so the next day I decided I was going to get it, I was going to make him an offer but it was too late, it was already sold. I realize now that was an excellent deal but was still a bit pricey & id like a 18" -20" one day anyhow. Both of the 14" bandsaws are doing great & my brother uses his every day.
The deals are there to be had, just sometimes they are 100+ miles away, good luck & enjoy retirement. I know about being on a tight budget, every dollar & penny counts so be super frugal, save & search. thanks for watching

There is a lot of blade noise on both saws. This can be cured by adjusting your blade guides. The back guides should be about 1/32" off the spine of the blade. The side guides should be just behind the valleys of the blade teeth and no more than 1/16" off the sides of the blades. None of the rollers, top or bottom, should be moving while the saw is running idle.

I've been using my Harbor Freight/Central Machinery 14 inch bandsaw for about 30 years and for the most part I've been happy with it (I've made a few small modifications) ... until now. For the past few months I noticed the table wasn't as stable as it used to be and I thought it was just sawdust getting into the trunnions. When I looked closely at the rear trunnion I noticed there were metal bits in the housing and the trunnion itself had portions busted off! Are these Harbor Freight/Central Machinery trunnions easy to replace? Are the trunnions generally interchangeable with Delta bandsaws? Can this part be ordered from Harbor Freight? Central Machinery?

Looks good but don't add the table extension as the trunions are cast aluminum on the Delta and will break very easily. Delta is not always a good quality. Still for $140 you can't get hurt with the stand especially. Good luck. Doug

The green harbor freight band-saws like that one are great. They are parts compatible with the Jet JWBS-14 and is the same saw as the older, early eighties American WBS-14. The newer gray Harbor Freight ones are pure Chinese junk. They cut more corners on it than they should have.
The older green Harbor Freight band saws are almost always a bargain on Craigslist because people think they are junk, but they're not.

I hear that, time is valuable. If you have a smart phone or even just an email account craigslist has a feature where you can input the item you are searching for & they will notify you as soon as the new listing is posted. I have not tried this feature but a woodworker friend I know does it, craigslist notifies him when hardwood boards become available so he usually gets first dibs, he makes a living building furniture & likes getting discounts on materials.
Just thought i'd pass the info on, take care

Ya know I see some comments below people giving others a hard time when commenting how we should keep safety in mind and not wear lose clothing etc etc. One even said "if one does not know how to not cut off a finger he should not even be using the machine". Well go ask Jamie from Perkins Brothers Builders who is an awesome builder and woodworker. He definitely knows his shit and recently just accidentally lost all his fingers on one hand to his jointer. Go check out his story as it'll make you have more respect around your tools. And like I said, he knows his tools. This guy in the video is ya, a good dude but, not only lose clothing but did the same mistake Jamie did when his hand got sucked into the jointer. He left one machine running while using the other and the guard was not over the blade. Believe me I ain't no safety susan but, after hearing about Jamie's recent injury I put my guard back on some of my equipment the next day.

I dont know if it will cut that thick if material well, depends if its a 1hp motor or only 3/4 like mine, also $350 may be a reasonable price if its in good working condition especially with a 1hp motor. I would offer him 225 for the saw if it were me only if I could use it though. I generally don't pay more for a used tool then what I can resell it for. Good luck

I had a 1961 version of the same 700 motor on a 14 ft Custom Craft. 6 cylinders. Did 40-45 MPH with general use prop. solid motor for us for 15 yrs. Maximum HP back in those days was the Model 1000 which had 100 HP. My brother -in-law had that engine on the Custom Craft catamaran. Did 55-60MPH. Fast back then for a stock runabout. Mercury subsequently upgraded the line to include a 6 cylinder 80 and 90 HP in the next few years. Loved the old Mercs

good deal on both saws ! it’s only the Dumbasses and ToolSnobs that bust onthe HarborFreight saws there isn’t anything wrong with those and many of the parts are Clones of the Delta anyway ! if you do convert the one saw to metal cutting you should change or address the speed Woodworking saws use a higher speed than metalworking and many guys have used a combination of either different motors or a gear reduction system to do so i’m a retired Woodworker myself and i’ve seen the conversions done a few times by people inthe metalworking or Machine Shop business it isn’t very difficult to do and is actually pretty common as many of the Woodworking saws were sold rebranded with many names but sold at a lower price than the Metalworking ones many of the old stores like Sears and MontgomeryWards sold them branded with their power tool names on them built in Taiwan for many years as even the Delta impretty sure stopped making them in the United States like many of their Table Saws ? many of the original pattens have been expired for years and the factories overseas have been building the machinery for years for a while the stuff wasn’t made with quality metals and parts but they have changed a lot of that over the years as they got contracts to build for many companies like Jet, Grizzly, and some other big companies

I just picked up a Delta 28-206, little more money, but it has a newer 1hp motor. Seemed worth it. I have since read that these cheaper delta saws do vibrate. Check that the motor pulleys are coplanar, and replace the belt with a link belt. The tires on teh wheels may need replacement, and check that the bearings for the wheels are tight, I suspect that Delta uses cheap bearings there. Also, check that the wheels run coplaner an smooth.

adamnblackman No problem, I think its the way to go, you could possibly try used on c.list but its hard to find the right frame size, rpm, hp. Or a second alternative would be Grizzly tools, they have killer motors for not much more than HF. You can scope then out through amazon but I find often times its less expensive to order direct from them even with shipping costs. A lot of times reading through reviews can help pinpoint which motor is right for you but I suppose you do have the original motor to base that off of. If money is no object then a baldor brand motor will last forever... I wish you luck!

Craig's List is getting worse and worse. A lot of people trying to get rich off of it. I had one day I found 2 people asking what they paid brand new and used it for a year. Then one more guy actually asking more than brand new on something used. It used to be great deals or fair now it's almost not worth the time. "Almost" not worth it.

+patrick258181 I've got the money to buy whatever I want. Not married, no stupid kids, no bills. Retired with two pensions, house paid off 22 years ago. Money is no object, except to a fucking dumb ass pauper. Fuck Craigslist......I have better things to do.

It's either Early Goodwill, Late St. Vincent de Paul, or garage sale grab bag. But hey, he got deal on a cool saw, so who cares?

On the back it says County Jail. Anyone know what happened to my band saw, I used to have one just like this...

Allot Harbor Freights stuff is plain trash, that's a fact. However... there are some items you can pickup there. Unless you buy that Benchgrinder with PLASTIC base... that is already broken in the store.

I don't think people are giving you a thumbs down because of the deal you got so much as your safety practices. I was shocked how you run them without the guards in place especially when actually cutting wood! ...a little careless

Linn Redinger , when I watch a video and they start talking the same old safety bullshit, I quit and go to another video, sick and tire of the safety BS, if you are stupid enough not to know that a band saw can cut your finger off, you should not be using that tool at all.

You keep on repeating your self everyone heard you the first time. That will get you a thumb down. Cool video to see the difference in the saws.

How is the Delta an upgrade from the HF? four speed vs. one speed. The HF has a break. The HF has a bigger stronger motor also. Your brother is getting the better saw. Looks like you bought into the brand name nonsense.
