You know, when Sebastian left, I thought nobody could fill his shoes. I was very wrong indeed. David Diepold.... no comment. You guys probably know him already.
@@warrenoids I love David Diepold. Him and Sebastian are two of my most favorite drummers of this generation of technical metal. That being said, Sebastian brought a completely different type of groove and intensity to Obscura and i think it's telling that he's of the three members that broke off to create new music. David is more than capable to play for Obscura, it's just a different feel than what Sebastian brings. They're equally capable of the speed and style mixtures, it's just a different feel between them.
The fact that Lanser is equally familiar with extreme jazz/fusion settings via Panzerballett shines through. He's not "just another metal drummer" with blast beast, which is what made this such an enjoyable experience.
I’ve seen him live with Obscura, and my eyes were glued to him and his kit the whole time. It’s more about the precision for me, but he’s dazzling. And since I have discovered Jung and Jung, a jazz trio he plays with, I can really see just how incredibly versatile he is.
Lanser quickly became one of my all time favorite drummers when I started listening to Obscura. His style, technique and the sound of his kit is incredibly satisfying. He embodies everything I love about drumming.
4:09 What a madlad, acceleration, absolutely brutal almost 10 second fill and straight to pure flawless blast beats. This whole performance is amazing. The definition of talent and a LOT of hard work.
I have a comment for all you drummers out there! I'm not a drummer, I never studied it but let's say I can play it. What happens at 2:33 makes me think... HOLY SHIT WAIT A SECOND, I just re-listened that part and realized I'm wrong. I believed that Sebastian was doing downbeats with his LEFT foot instead of the right foot, but this is damn right if I count the 16ths! He is playing 16ths beats N. 1 (right), 4-5 (left, right), 8-9-10-11 (left, right, left, right), 14-16 (left, left). This is incredible!!
I gotta admit I don't fully understand why he does that in this specific beat, but keeping the left foot always playing the "even" 16ths is not only a very good exercise to develop the week foot but also a way to make double bass drumming in general easier. There's a finite amount of combinations given the 16 16ths in a bar, and if you ALWAYS use the right/dominant foot for the 'odd' 16ths and the left/week foot for the 'even' 16ths, you are basically ready for everything that gets thrown at you.
god, just flowing from quintuplets, to sextuplets, then back to quintuplets, to straight 32nd notes (octuplets in terms of tuplets), with such liquidity. Sebastian will always be the best tech death drummer.
You know you can tell an absolute MANIAC on the drums when they play this style of metal, and you have a hard time telling if they are predominantly right, or left handed, (and footed). This guy and Rudinger are pretty much the only two, that I've seen anyway, that can use the right and left side of their bodies as the 'lead" side. Cheers, Sebastian! You're a monster, sir
Sebastian Lanser está llevando el metal drumming a otro nivel. Variaciones de todo tipo hace a este excelente baterista el n1 en el estilo, obviamente sin desmerecer a otro grandes bateristas. El Thomas Lang del extreme metal drumming
4:14 that roll played as 8th note triplets alternating between splash and toms, starts out left hand lead and then every time he hits a splash switches leading hands back and forth. This guy is on a different level
3:01 when the big bossfight begins. Been watching Sebastian even though I haven't heard Obscura before, really enjoying his drumming and the music is not bad either 😉
I will never be this style of player but jesus do I respect it... this is absolutely insane to think that a human being can do this with their body.. humans rule
Some custom direct drives by a company called Schlossleitnerr technologies. I believe if you go on Sebastian's instagram you can find a link through there
The playing is so amazing. Only complaint here is that for some reason the splash, right hi-hat and ride are at a very low volumne in this video. I can see from the resording a room mic somewhere there in between but i cannot hear it. I particularly adore his ride tripplets while doing a blast beat, but this time i could barely hear them.
You my brother are fckn godly live that's all I can say I saw you guys when you came to Portland and you guys blew my fckn mind some of the greatest musicians I've ever seen

You know, when Hannes left, I genuinely thought no one could ever be as good as him in obscura. I was very wrong.
Those were some huge shoes to step into, but this guy nailed it.
Im thinking the same.
yup, you said it, very wrong. hehe Sebastian is a technical beast to say the least.Love his playing

His drumming is so clean, it could be used as a dinner plate.
If a janitor listened to this while cleaning, then I'd eat off the floor since it'll be so clean

It's always nice to see drummers who have decent/high and consistent stick height on their blast beats. Dude's clean af. Cheers!
fwench gwip ftw
Check out Dan Presland, hes got some insane stick height
Also hannes Grossman, probably has the most powerful blast I've ever seen
This right hur

Sebastian is killing the metal drumming game with these unremitting double strokes variations + amazing & innovative fills. Hail from France !
The sound between sebastian and linus is so tight that sometines they steal the spot on the songs! Amazing

0:45 I just love the alternating 16ths and triplets in both the riff and drumming
Don't mind me, just here living vicariously through someone else's immaculate musicianship
Great Sebastian! one of the best Drummer in this moment!!!
Damn holy precision. He doesn't miss a single detail, sounds just like the studio track, it's absurd. Fkn hell I love him.
I’m convinced he’s a cyborg sent from the future to show us mere mortals how it’s done 🤯🤯🤯
So far all he's done is discourage humans
Ur not wrong.
Metal drumming with a heart of jazz!
Finally official drum playthrough, the complexity of the drum arrangement is superb 😍
This guy is really good at covering obscura songs on drums.

Excelente como usa todo el kit en un solo remate , solo los grandes hacen lo que hace este señor saludos desde México los esperamos con ansias
Can we just stop at 2:58 and admire the perfect transition fill? Good lord.

How many hours and reps to be this tight and accurate... every stroke and movement is so precisse... so good.
2:58 the best brutal transitions \,,/
This is a masterpiece, dude. I love how complex and pleasant it is to hear! It's amazing!

This guy is a monster !!! What a workout and precision this guy has on the drums, just amazing...
Sebastian is TOP TIER. Hannes must be so happy to see this
I was smiling and laughing all the way through, especially when looking at the way he does blast beats by moving his hand only.
Him and linus are litterally making love through music. That bass + drums synergy is so good.
I know there are a bunch of good drummers out there, but this guy has something special.
i absolutly love when he plays blast beats on the hi-hat

Swivel tehnique
I feel like drumming and also guitar playing is at a point where it can't get any faster or more technical. Where do we go from here?
Ojibway man enjoying sonic bombardment high AF in Norcal, nice fckng work.
What a genius
The best of present 🤘
Absolutely loving this setup and obviously the performance is beastly! Any chance you could go over the mic setup and drum sizes?
