In the last 40 years, appliance sales have gone from local independent dealers (and Sears..) to a relative handful of big box mass merchandisers. Just as a few suppliers have the power to keep selling prices higher, WalMart, Lowe's, and Home Depot, by themselves, have the buying power to push wholesale prices consistently lower.. Knocking $5 off the price of each washer is significant when buying in massive volume, and they'll demand $8 off next year. This pressure on manufacturers results, year over year, in cheaper and thinner plastic replacing metal and rubber, screws and plastic welds replacing nuts and bolts, and flimsy electronics replacing knobs, switches, and mechanical timers. The shiny, glitzy exteriors of many of these washers in this video are hiding embarassingly cheap and cheezy innards.
These days, the big box guys, at least in my market, are just leasing the floor space and getting commissions. The appliance manufacturers have their own central warehouses and delivery teams. It doesn't matter who you buy from, the order is going to go to that warehouse and get delivered from there. This partially shuts out the independents as they are on the last udder and get served last on the most popular models. The big box stores have no inventory on hand. Makes a ton of sense from an inventory standpoint, and there isn't price competition between big box stores anymore. One has it on sale, they all will. The only pressure these days is coming from the different manufacturers.
Good luck getting help at Home depot! We waited 1 hour, even tried to tell other employees we needed help! We walked out and went to Lowes! Got a fridge, washer and dryer.
I have an LG with the impeller, but it is the TurboDrum model, with a punch action. Purchased 8 years ago, to replace my dearest Speed Queen set, I have had no problems to report. My Speed Queen set cost too much to repair and even more to replace. I could buy three to four LGs of my model for the Speed Queens.
We bought a whirlpool with the removable agitator a little over a year ago. It washed fine, but it was noisy(especially during spin cycle) and didn't have an end of cycle signal. After 4 service calls for various issues(luckily all covered under the 1 year warranty) we gave up after the 5th issue and replaced it with a speed queen. Obviously not available at the depot, but just a warning for the removable agitator models.
Basically everything is junk now that isn't a Speed Queen top loader. I work on all brands often, and it's the only washer that's less than 15-20 years old I would even allow in my house. I'll clean my clothes on a washboard by hand like it's the early 1900s before I'd buy anything with a suspension rod setup or an impeller instead of an agitator. Never buy a Samsung toploader, and never buy a Samsung appliance. They have garbage electronics, suspension rods, and quality. Pay the extra for the SQ now and thank yourself in 10 years when your washer still works. The LG front loaders are the next best option.
@@gargamel3393Speed Queen washing machines are going to be the least accessible, as far as money is concerned. I understand that Speed Queen washers and dryers are obviously built to last, so that factors into the extremely high upfront costs, but at the same time, what are people supposed to do that can't afford a Speed Queen washer and (rightfully) won't get a used washing machine? Like it or not, $1200+ dollars is a HUGE asking price for many Americans, and with that in mind, it would really help if Speed Queen offered lease to own options instead of just offering the usual upfront one time purchase that a LOT of people simply don't have the financial luxury and freedom to be able to afford.
I have the first model LG washer shown but without the agitator and I must say.. it does the job well and it super quiet. I’d definitely purchase it again if I had to do it all over again. Washes very well and seems to use a tad more water than the other non-agitator brands.
I've watched a lot of your videos, very informative. Our 28-year-old Kenmore '90 series finally gave out. We t with local shop that sells used and S/D. Picked up a refurbished 2023 Maytag 4.7cuft dual agitator washer paired with a 2019 Maytag commercial line dryer for $550 total.
The LG 500.00 model has very good reviews. The fact being that it does a great job cleaning and that there isnt alot of confusing computer technology that is costly to repair. This is the washer that I will buy. SQ is great, but with a ridiculous price tag. I know, you get what you pay for.
So what do I want in a washer?? Firstly, simplicity of operation (don't want computerized if at all possible!). Selectors for water levels, water temperature, wash cycles (regular, delicate, wrinkle -free, etc), and even one for extra rinses. I am used to an agitator operation so would likely prefer that to the impeller. (Although friends have an impeller model and love how it cleans & how dry their clothing is before putting in dryer). What I would like to see added to new machines is a removable filter that would catch the lint/hair. This was a feature on my first washing machine (1970) which was washer/spin dryer. The wash water was recirculated coming out over the top of the agitator where a removable "dish" with holes would collect the lint, etc for each load. Great item and you didn't need to put your clothes in a dryer to remove the lint you get from today's machines. Thank you for presenting this as my existing machine is showing its age and will need to be replaced in this coming year.
Just got the Whirlpool with removable agitator after our 25 year old Whirlpool went up. It does not wash as well. I can’t stand the new settings that limit customizing my wash and the wash cycles seem to short. The rinse on these HE washers also seems questionable.
I have the Samsung 5.3 had it longer than 2 years and it's been working just fine! Had the Speed Queen TC5 as well great solid machine just a bit loud and rough on your clothes. Do your research and go with what you can afford at the time.
Samsung appliances are junk . One of Neghbors bought a Samsung Refrigerator & while they were gone the compressor went out. I was watching the home while they was gone & I had no idea there refrigerator quilt working .
I can't believe how lucky we've been. We bought a Samsung front loading pair in about 2005. The dryer just went out and washer is still working fine. When it goes out, we are going to bite the bullet and go with a Speed Queen. That based on the the guy at two different box stores saying they are now all junk regardless of brand. They've all combined and only about three companies now. He said expect to replace in 2-5 years. SQ is still it's own company and is still used in laundry mats.
Ge top loaders are the way to go. My family got one in 2008 and we put it through hell. It was 3.5 cubic feet and we were washing king size comforters and everything in it. Multiple loads of clothes a day. It lasted 9 years until one day its agitator just came off. Replaced with another ge top load in 2017 4.3 cubic feet and it’s still going strong
My SAMSUNG front loader washer was 14yrs old, Spider Bracket broke / dissolved LOL. I didn't have the room to work on it or the time. Bought a NEW GE front loader, works great, had good reviews. Bought the GE unit with the dual action agitator. Never could get enough water in the machine. Max water I could get was 17 gal. Sent it back. Buyer beware.
I had my Samsung washer and dryer for the last 8 years, and so far is, doing their job. Keep cleaning, use the correct detergent, and use the button correctly; mine is pre-soak that I love. I have to say that all my appliances are from Samsung. My last stove and fridge I bought it 12 years ago; the only way I bought some new appliances is because the top of the stove was very scratched because my mom loves to use the wrong pans. The fridge I still have in the basement and still working fine but I changed because my kids broke the plastics from drawer and door and theirs so expensive so I decide to buy a new fridge. The microwave has been changed 3 times, but my first microwave (8) throughout because my kids broke the door handle and, days after, it was not running inside; the second(4), for some reason, one day, started having trouble when it opened the door start running so I bought another one 4 months ago. I know I can open the door handle and fix that, but when something starts having problems, I know it is going to keep happening. But in my house, we used the microwave a lot, a lot. My washing machine, since I bought it 13 years ago, has been there without use. I like to wash my dishes every time something is dirty. I cannot see one spoon in my sink, so no need for that. Also, I forgot one time my dryers stopped working, and we fixed that, There was something in the motor that was stretched, and we put on a new one, and my washer is working fine. I Love Samsung; I always said it depends how you maintain and use your appliances or any electrodoméstics and how long they will keep running and working as a new appliance. Another thing is that people don't read the manual anymore and it is very important to read and use those appliances like the manual said. I read all my manuals. Maybe that's why I had my appliances for so long. My white towels or white clothes are consistently brilliant white and I don't use Clorox in my clothes. The dark clothes are always intact. Always use the correct water temperature to keep your clothes new and clean. Use, Very hot water for very dirty white clothes, hot water for regular white clothes, cold water for dark colors, and warm water for colors. Remember to use the correct detergents.
The older Amana and Admiral were in the $300 range, and I've had both for 10+ years. Analog control switches and simple features work best and are easiest to repair yourself. The cheaper dryer works for us all day long and I clean and fully inspect it every year or so. No complicated parts. Amana and Admiral were identical down to the last screw but are now at $498.
Thanks for your reviews! I’ll be going to HD soon for new set of washer/dryer since Sears is no longer an option. Appreciate tip about dual action agitator, my current washer is front loading & I love it. Love that it keeps water usage at min. But in past I had top loading, dual.
They are no longer durable goods. I´d rather say they are disposable goods. At least you have many choices when it comes to washing machines. Greetings from Panama.
I am not a fan of computers on washers and dryers becaues they will fail. I like the old-school washing machines like the Direct Dives and Speed Queen.
I got a lg top load washer with a impeller for $700 original price $1300 at rc Willey you can actually customize it to put to a full tub of water first you hit the deep fill and then when it’s done pause the machine and hit it again and then a full tub of water
I notice the ones with an impellor don't get the clothes down into the water like the agitators do. And I'd say the best type of agitator is the screw type because it really pushes the clothes down into the water. The impellors kind of just let the clothes sit on top of the water and they don't really get moved around in it as much
Junk, I returned mine. It's not a real agitator, it spins a couple times and then goes back the direction it came, so it never sucks the clothes down and recurclates them. I watched every load on every cycle and was very disappointed.
If you want 220 volts washers and dryers from worldwide you need a step up converter. Must plug the converter into a 20 amp electrical outlet so it can handle the power or have an electrician hard wire the 120 volt input.
I bought a Maytag without agitator had to replace transmission after 11 months and then the transmission went out again then I just finally trashed it and got a GE the GE has done me well so far the Maytag only lasted 2 in a half years. Also bought a Maytag dryer that thing is awful I will never buy Maytag or whirlpool again there stuff is trash.
Good I saw this video. My 23 year old whirlpool stopped spinning in sundry cycle and it’s gonna cost 300 plus to fix. I want something basic so I’m going to look into those GE and maybe Whirlpool. I’ve heard bad things about Samsung and lg washer so I’ll refrain
I wouldn't have Whirlpool for anything. Unlike Speed Queen, they keep cheapening constantly. Even their Kitchen Aid mixers have become junk. Speed Queen is the only way to go.
@@appliance-insider I bought it for my dad, and he appears happy with it. I wish I had more for you, but it appears like a very decent machine. Replacing the basic Kenmore 20232 for him which was a clone of the Amana. The control board went out. What are your thoughts on Kenmore (now that it’s more or less a dead brand)?
Lol just started watching your videos Saturday before buying a new unit that same day. Glad I got the one you chose as number 1 pick. Got 8 years out of my maytag with the plate only. Hope this ge last as long or longer. If not my next one no doubt speed queen.
The whirlpool with the removable agitator is a complete gimmick. I don't see any change in wash action. It's a shame that whirlpool has gone downhill. Who knows if it will ever recover?
The Whirlpool washer, model WTW5057LW with agitator has a really miserable flaw. Washing as directed- at a minimum, using warm water and detergent, and Normal setting, a scummy residue at the waterline is the result. My washer was delivered 2 months ago and used about 3 times a week with clothes, sheets or towels filling about 1/3 the tub. These items were not grimy. I scrub the residue off, only to have to do it again after washing. Whirlpool solicits reviews but the review button goes nowhere.
I'm no fan of samsung... however, I was on a laundry forum and two different ppl mentioned they needed a front load washer replacement... that theirs had given up....One of them was a Samsung front loader that was 15 years old... and the other person had a samsung washer that was 10 yrs old and still worked.... both front load... I just thought that was interesting since I hear so much negative about them.
Delivery experience from Home Depot was horrible. Unmarked truck came (probably provided by manufacture/supplier), delivery people were very inconsiderate, they didn't clean up after themselves, time delivered was way off from the window they provided, I saw them dent the appliance as they delivered it. Everyone I talked to says that PC Richards is much better. PC Richard actually has the name on the truck. That says alot. And for Furniture, Raymoure and Flanigan, delivery and quality of the furniture was actually very good as well.
I would not want a washing machine with no agitator and one that clicks on that could break no way have the original as it should be and they wash a lot better I agree
Forget all of these! I know spending well over $1000 sounds beyond outrageous. That's what a Speed Queen costs. Plus, they're only available at select "mom & pop" appliance dealers. But, the ROI (return in investment) has no peers. These machines may have smaller tubs ( they also have a front-load, tumble-action model); but they do a better job. Agitator action-68 strokes per minute creates aggressive washing action that rolls even the biggest loads through the water. Centrifugal drain spins out the water instead of draining through the clothes; spray rinse. Best of all, unparalleled dependability ; 25-year life expectancy; much easier to service; cabinet and lid are porcelain coated steel; not painted on finish. These machines are like what Maytags were in their heyday. Like it or not, to get really are worth that kind of money, considering what you saw in this video.(sorry)
I would not recommend the cheap Amana washer. Mine died after 18 months, however the matching dryer has been great for a $400 dryer. I’ve had it since 2017 drying at least 7 loads per week. Never a repair. I just clean it out once a year. Of coarse I clean the lint trap with each use. As far as washers. This dryer outlasted its match as well as a whirlpool and an expensive piece of crap front loading Electrolux. I bought a TR5 speed queen last year. I think I’m done buying washers. The speed queen is the best. Its price reflects that 😂. No buyers remorse yet. Time will tell.
I’ve loved Samsung since my childhood, and it’s really upsetting that their appliances are performing this way, I think I remember I had a 2008 Samsung Wall split Aircon, worked well for 10 years until it stopped cooling. But about washers, since they are the worst ones, are the old ones actually good? Hoping there is still some hope on Samsung.
Other than a Maytag we had, our Samsung has been a unit more than 5 years, don’t know if someone’s paying you or you’re doing the federal penitentiary’s laundry with your washer and beating the sh@t out of it but for normal households Samsungs should do fine. P.S the Whirlpools and GE’s we’ve had were absolute junk
There is a difference between an agitator and an agi-peller. All I've seen in this video have been impellers and agi-pellers. You want a real agitator go to an independent store and buy a Speed Queen TC5 series.
The majority of laundry appliances from Samsung/LG/Whirlpool etc. are Zero to Junkyard within 5 years or less. There is more structural integrity in the cardboard containers they wear shipped in. It is simply not in these firms’ interest to produce appliances at those price points that last a long time.
Have you even seen how these new washer with agitators wash?? They are even more horrible than the ones with impeller plate. I would rather go with the front loader during this decade!
GE? Have you took the time to read the reviews and there are a lot of them on the GE washers?...Ya ...not very good at all unless you go to GE Profile line which sends the price way up.
Front loaders are a nightmare. Grow mold and take too long to wash. Had a Maytag one when I was married (German built) and external plastic tub cracked in three years

Which one of these do you think is the quietest ? Is the hot point good. I know the GE one is very loud.
Guys don’t buy it I only washed a small load something failed and broke it don’t buy the wt8400cw it’s trash get the wt7900hwa much better
do you recommend top loaders vs front loaders. How about machines uses too much water, water bill.
I’ll stick with speed queen
Yep
I'd go with the GE, but my wife wants a washer with a view. So we'll go with the LG this time and save for the Speed Queen on our next go 'round.
I notice the ones with an impellor don't get the clothes down into the water like the agitators do. And I'd say the best type of agitator is the screw type because it really pushes the clothes down into the water. The impellors kind of just let the clothes sit on top of the water and they don't really get moved around in it as much
What top loader would you recommend with a 1,000 budget?
Thoughts on the LG WT8405CB
5.3 cu. ft. Mega Capacity Smart Top Load Washer with 4-Way® Agitator?
Junk, I returned mine. It's not a real agitator, it spins a couple times and then goes back the direction it came, so it never sucks the clothes down and recurclates them. I watched every load on every cycle and was very disappointed.
I own a lg front loader and it’s one of the best washers I’ve owned. I get all my clothes clean, and all my loaves are 50 min and less to do
I bought the LG 4.8 with agitator. Getting it delivered next week. Anyone know if its good?
We have speed queen at the Union Hall, kind of rudimentary, but seem to work well
If you want 220 volts washers and dryers from worldwide you need a step up converter. Must plug the converter into a 20 amp electrical outlet so it can handle the power or have an electrician hard wire the 120 volt input.
My wife and I bought a front load ge washer with the vent feature. Should we return it?
What do you think of the washer that can dry your clothes? They sell them at Lowe’s.
I'm sticking with my Whirlpool Duet Steam washer and dryer from 2008 :)
7:16 . I just got it recently and it's quality so far. No issues 👍
5:04 That reminds of a Samsung top loader at my local appliance store in Australia.
5:04 they also have the same washing machine with the agitator
My 15 year old Kenmore elite is giving up and I am not really sure if these new appliances can really last that long.
They wont...😢😢
7:16 we picked this one up from Lowe’s for $508 on Memorial Day sale.
Thank you for sharing, tell me more how has the performance been?
@@appliance-insider I bought it for my dad, and he appears happy with it. I wish I had more for you, but it appears like a very decent machine. Replacing the basic Kenmore 20232 for him which was a clone of the Amana. The control board went out. What are your thoughts on Kenmore (now that it’s more or less a dead brand)?
@@alfredvalrie5541what model # was the machine?
Lol just started watching your videos Saturday before buying a new unit that same day.
Glad I got the one you chose as number 1 pick.
Got 8 years out of my maytag with the plate only.
Hope this ge last as long or longer. If not my next one no doubt speed queen.
Awesome this unit looks very promising long-term
The whirlpool with the removable agitator is a complete gimmick. I don't see any change in wash action. It's a shame that whirlpool has gone downhill.
Who knows if it will ever recover?
The very last machine you recommended you didn’t give any information like the model number do you know the model number?
The Whirlpool washer, model WTW5057LW with agitator has a really miserable flaw. Washing as directed- at a minimum, using warm water and detergent, and Normal setting, a scummy residue at the waterline is the result. My washer was delivered 2 months ago and used about 3 times a week with clothes, sheets or towels filling about 1/3 the tub. These items were not grimy. I scrub the residue off, only to have to do it again after washing. Whirlpool solicits reviews but the review button goes nowhere.
Thank you for the info. God Bless you too.
I have that $800 Maytag
Washes and works fine!
I’m planning to buy a refurbished 90 series Kenmore set because nothing is made like it used to be
Awesome advice thank you.
Why is there a target bag in the Maytag?
Go to a small mom and pop shop that is a Speed Queen dealer. You won't be disappointed.
What model # is that GE at 8:25?
Delivery experience from Home Depot was horrible. Unmarked truck came (probably provided by manufacture/supplier), delivery people were very inconsiderate, they didn't clean up after themselves, time delivered was way off from the window they provided, I saw them dent the appliance as they delivered it. Everyone I talked to says that PC Richards is much better. PC Richard actually has the name on the truck. That says alot. And for Furniture, Raymoure and Flanigan, delivery and quality of the furniture was actually very good as well.
Who ever gets rid of the electronics and goes back to the old spin dials will corner the market 100%, sick of this electronic junk shot in 3-4 years.
I would not want a washing machine with no agitator and one that clicks on that could break no way have the original as it should be and they wash a lot better I agree
No frontloaders? Thats weird
I just got the GE profile 5.0 Diamond color any advice?
I don't like to have glass on top of the washer. Can be breakable.
Thank you for real help!
I try to be thorough I want to help people buy good products instead of getting stuck with expensive junk
I just purchased a Speed Queen set. Hopefully it'll outlast all of those.
I won't even look at the ones without an agitator and deep fill/water fill options.
Thank you for this video! Very helpful
I hope it helps save money and make a good decision
I would buy a washer with an agitator in it had one with no agitator and my clothes did not get clean
My whirlpool 2in1 is 2 years old transmission broke. Sucks
Do not get that whirlpool removable agitator shit. The control board shit the bed a year after I bought it.
What about front loaders
Great info!
I have a whirlpool… the spin cycle is done. The gear system is plastic.. designed to fail. Very disappointing
Appliance insider dropped a new video😱😱😱😱😱
Prices are over the roof 😮
I've had LG. I've had Samsung, I've had GE. I've had Maytag. I've had Maytag.
I have Speed Queen.
Kenmore !!!
10:34 Technician in a box? There's a novelty!
New washers won’t let you fill the washer with water ! !
God bless you , and thanks again Robert Downey Jr.
You completely skipped the front loaders. I don’t think there is a single top loader I would buy for myself.
Yes I personally would not own a front loader even if the government mandates it
Front loaders are a nightmare. Grow mold and take too long to wash. Had a Maytag one when I was married (German built) and external plastic tub cracked in three years
@@pauli6043LG owns the market - and Speed Queens get mold too- it’s all about how to maintain them
@appliance-insider may I ask why?
