    Was doing straight carnivore for a while and couldn't stick with it. It was way too restrictive. Started adding fruit and fruit juice to my diet and it's been not only a breeze to stick to but I feel way better and have lost more weight then I did on straight carnivore. People make too big of a deal about the sugar in fruit and fruit juice. The way your body uses and breaks down the sugar in fruit is completely different than the way it handles the high fructose corn syrup in something like a soda. The source and type of sugar matters.

    Remember that a diet high in fruit (glucose & fructose) may be appropriate, totally healthy for someone like him. He doesn’t have a 9 to 5 stressful office job. He seems to be doing well economically, he has all the time in the world to read scientific literature and he’s qualified for it, he makes adjustments to his diet here and there, he probably prioritise red meat and he’s constantly learning and paying attention to his own symptoms. And most importantly he surfs a lot and works out everyday, he’s getting a lot of vitamin D since he lives in costa rica and vitamin D levels are intimately related to glucose sensitivity. He also has prepared his gut to digest easily both large cuantities of fiber and bacteria from raw milk. I bet he has better blood sugars than me following a keto diet lol. So what he says makes a lot of sense for him, and don’t forget he’s always been somehow metabolically healthy to begin with.

    Maybe better to moderate fruit juice. The liver can only handle so much fructose efficiently at a time. Noone is eating the 20 apples at a time they'd get in a big glass of juice

    The problem with fruit juices is the amount of fructose you're taking in during one "eating" session is unnaturally high - it has to be processed by the liver and only so much can be handled at a time (say, the amount you might take in via eating a fibrous fruit)
    It's going to be different for everyone but people should trial fruit juice to see if it creates fatigue or weight gain in certain quantities - I tend to just have a shot glass worth after meals when i instinctively feel like it. Any more creates fatigue

    What do you think of high quality bottled juice, which is pure juice, nothing added at all, but, well still bottled? In Europe a lot of these "high quality bottled juices" are popping out and I’m unsure if I should get them. They are pretty expensive (4x the price of normal grocery store juice) but still significantly cheaper than buying fruits and pressing them yourself which is important for a broke student like me.

    • @charlesbrown4483
      @charlesbrown4483 9 місяців тому

      Depends. Are they strained, or is the pulp still in them? A lot of the nutrients of fruit is in the pulp, rather than the liquid you squeeze out which is mostly(not all, but mostly) just water and sugar.
      Are they in plastic bottles? If so that’s really not good, micro plastics and whatnot.
      Are there any additives? If so, what are they?
      There is some more context, but in general those are probably the most important factors to consider.

    This is Paul's hardest sell for me. If you remove or blend up the fiber, that sugar is being absorbed no differently than a Coca Cola. And none of these fruit juices save for the coconut water (maybe) have any more than 10% DV of any electrolyte mineral.
    Easy to consider this stuff benign if you surf/skate for 2-3 hr a day and you have good metabolic and liver/kidney health as a starting point. Would not recommend anyone else regularly consume fruit juice, and reluctant to believe that it will be free from long term consequences vs whole fruits even in highly active people.

      You truly believe your body can’t tell the difference between processed sugar found in soda and the sugar from fruits?

    • @DoritoWorldOrder
      @DoritoWorldOrder 9 місяців тому +7

      @@CorySpitznagel Well, we can get REALLY granular in our analysis if you want. American Coke has high fructose corn syrup, which seems to have crept higher than 50/50 in its fructose-to-glucose ratio, and may contain additional starches in it thus conveying additional calories beyond what's on the label, and may also have traces of heavy metals or certain industrial chemicals left over from its heightened processing.
      But if you take Mexican Coke as your example, which is made with simple cane sugar (same in many other countries), then this "processed sugar" is both chemically identical to the sugar in fruit juice, and will have very little difference in how it is absorbed or metabolized granted it is fundamentally just a solution of sucrose in water. The juice will have some vitamins and minerals and other beneficial compounds suspended in that solution as well, but none of them are going to slow down the absorption of that sugar in the gut, or alter how quickly all of that fructose is going to hit the liver.
      When you eat whole fruit, all of those sugars are locked up in a matrix of fiber that is only partially broken down by chewing. The remnant portions of that matrix of fiber significantly slow the release of the sugars as the chewed food travels through the gut - and also ferries much of that bolus of sugar past the upper gut and allows it to be churned up and absorbed further down in the mid-gut where it results in completely different hormonal signaling than when you have a flood of simple sugars in aqueous solution flow right through the stomach and hit the duodenum all at once.
      When you juice or blend a fruit and drink the result, that whole matrix of fiber that all of that sugar was suspended in is obliterated and you end up with sugar suspended in water, which is absorbed into the bloodstream much more quickly, placing a much larger load on the liver, beginning with rapid absorption in the upper gut where the K cells of the gut lining respond to being bathed in sugar by releasing a hormone called GIP that signals for a rapid release of insulin, increased appetite, and upregulation of adipose storage, instead of those sugars being absorbed more slowly as they're ferried to the lower gut where the L cells of the gut lining respond to the presence of sugar with a hormone called GLP-1 that is associated with satiety, lower and more steady insulin secretion, and improved pancreatic function and beta cell lifespan.
      These two parallel and overlapping modes of digestive hormonal signaling (higher sugar, lower fiber, eat more / lower sugar, higher fiber, eat less) correspond to the food choices and dilemmas that would have presented themselves to humans in their evolutionary envelope. In much of the area where early humans ranged in temperate climates, fresh ripe fruit would have only been available seasonally - with different types of fruit-bearing plants perhaps only bearing ripe fruit for a few weeks out of the year; and even in tropical and subtropical zones where fruits might grow year-round in certain places, the availability of fruit would have been limited to what grew naturally because we had no concept of the cultivation of these fruiting plants, and also limited in the sense that early humans were a ranging species constantly exploring new territory where they may not have pre-existing knowledge of where the fruit trees and fruiting plants lay in a given area they were hunting or trekking through. What this all means is that it was of tremendous survival benefit for humans who have just stumbled upon a tree or bush full of ripe fruit to *gorge* themselves on all the fruit they could eat, far in excess of their daily caloric needs, and pack as much of that excess sugar into our bodies as possible to be stored as fat for future use, because it wasn't available all the time and couldn't be preserved. This is why we evolved chemical signaling pathways that ramp up our appetite, insulin, and fat storage when we taste and digest simple sugars - a chemical signaling proxy for the fleeting availability of fresh, ripe, sweet, juicy fruit. As fruit ripens, it becomes sweeter, often more 'juicy' or engorged with water, and the fiber degrades, meaning that more of the sugar present in it is washed into solution by chewing and immediately available to our taste buds and to the K cells in our upper gut, with the K cells sensing more sugar and releasing more GIP to increase appetite and increase insulin in order to ensure more fruit can be eaten and it's sugars safely assimilated for storage as fat, working in concert with the brain as the reward value of the sweet taste in our mouth spikes dopamine to enhance seeking behavior so we continue to search and pick for more fruit until we've exhausted it's supply or eaten all that we can. But this whole process was again punctuated by the limited availability of fruit in nature, and was meant to be balanced out by the other parallel path of eating and hormonal signaling we default to in the absence of ripe fruit - the periods of time throughout the year or situationally where we would have been eating fibrous tubers or foraged vegetables or even unripe fruit out of sheer hunger and desperation, giving us little in the way of sweet tastes or sugar-sensing in the upper gut, with any sugars or starches in these more fibrous and bitter and defense-chemical laden austerity foods being passed to the lower gut where the L cells respond by releasing GKP-1 which induces satiety, so we eat less of these suboptimal foods, and slows the release of insulin from the pancreas to make stored fat more accessible for energy. *Juicing* a fruit or consuming a sugar-sweetened beverage both similarly 'hack' or highjack these signaling pathways by making the brain and gut think we've just found the ripest, sweetest, juiciest fruit ever, while also conveying no fiber so we don't have the backstop of becoming physically full to put a stop to ad libitum consumption - and because both such beverages are available to us 24/7/365, if we allow a significant amount of either in our diet every single day, we end up inducing a constant state of appetite enhancement and cravings for sweet tastes, as well as bombarding ourselves with a constant influx of nutrients that we were only designed to have punctuated temporary access to, leading to the exhaustion and chronic degeneration of the metabolic and organ systems that allow us to assimilate those nutrients in a healthy manner and within our limited biological headroom to do so.
      The sugars found in fruit juice have been *processed* in exactly the same manner as the "table sugar" (cane sugar) in soda pop, and it is also chemically identical (sucrose, a disaccharide of one glucose molecule and one fructose molecule). Cane sugar is the result of taking the sugar cane plant and essentially running it through a giant juicer, then drying the resulting juice to remove the water content, only to then add it back into an aqueous solution later to make a beverage like soda pop later. They are both fundamentally solutions of sucrose in a certain amount of water - the only difference in processing being that the sugar in the latter was dehydrated and then rehydrated later, where this is obviously not necessary in the case of fresh fruit juice. But it's still the exact same sugar with the exact same chemistry being delivered in the same aqueous solution, causing the same metabolic signaling.
      Soda pops like Coca Cola contain many other harmful factors besides the load of processed sugar they convey when consumed (such as phosphoric acid and artificial colors and flavors and other harmful additives), and they contain none of the nutrition present in fruits juices - so they are clearly going to be more harmful than fruit juices overall - but when compared calorie-for-calorie they are close equivalents in *metabolic* effect.
      The point here is not to go out and drink soda because it's interchangeable with fruit juice; the point is that we have a choice of whether to *eat* fruits or *drink* them, and eating them is clearly much better for humans than drinking them. A healthy, virile, and highly active person like Paul can probably deal with a good amount of fruit juice every single day with no metabolic overload or degeneration. A person who's just now trying to get healthy as an adult with an Animal Based Diet and has eaten a standard American diet for most of their life, and who struggles to stay physically active, and has markers of significant metabolic dysfunction, such as high fasting insulin, fatty liver, diminished kidney function, diabetes, obesity, etc, and who has poor mitochondrial function due to being loaded down with linoleic acid making them that much more metabolically sensitive to energy overload - should most emphatically be *eating* their fruits rather than *drinking* them, and moreover would benefit tremendously from choosing fruits which are low-to-moderate in sugar content and keeping their fruit consumption reasonably anchored to their level of physical activity.

      @@DoritoWorldOrder I have to give credit for that thorough response. Though I'm of the school of thought that the human body is an amazing machine and highly resilient and therefore eating a portion of what you love everyday and going for walks is just fine. But thank you for your comment, I appreciated it.

    I would love to drink juice but if I did it would increase blood sugars and contribute to fatty liver and make me feel sick. For now water and black coffee for me only atm.

    Love watermelon too, but is nitric oxide really that beneficial? Look into what Ray Peat has written on the subject, and ask Georgi Dinkov next time you have him on!

    Coconut juice is the best and has 3 to 4 times less sugar/carbs than the gatorade, orange and pineapple juice and less than half sugar/carbs than watermelon juice All the other juices have way too much sugar/carbs.

    Yeah juice tastes really good, maybe it could be to much sugar if you chug it. Sipping while eating should be fine, or you could dilute it with water.

    I have been eating carnivore for a year and despite taking electrolytes and magnesium, suffer with cramp in my shins and feet most mornings. Five days ago I introduced raw honey and fruit and was loving it, until yesterday. I am in a world of pain with all my joints aching and my kidneys. I have stomach cramps and liquid stools. I don’t want to believe it’s the fruit and thought it might be a microbiome adjustment, so continued eating it but it’s just getting worse. I”m wondering if I’m now super sensitive to oxalates or whether it’s the chemicals they spray everything with (I do wash my fruit.) Has anyone any advice please?
