My overall health practices that have nothing to do with my Type 1 Diabetes…Or Do They? ◉ Subscribe: goo.gl/ZfjYfu
Sometimes I think I get so focused in on my Type 1 Diabetes metrics that we all know so well (dosing, pre-blousing, blood sugar, time in range, etc) that I think I focus on those metrics above all else and forget that my overall health needs more attention. And when I focus in on my overall health, these seemingly unrelated healthful practices have a remarkably positive impact on my Type 1 Diabetes.

I've said it before- I'll say it again- this is absolutely my favorite Type-1 Diabetes Channel. As an RN who works with Diabetic children, I wish I could bring this woman to chat with my young patients. "Shesdiabetic" is the real-deal and so practical in all her content. Greetings, from Brooklyn, NY, USA.
What a way to start my Monday morning - seeing this gorgeously kind comment!! Thank you!!! If you ever did want me to come in and talk or help in any way (not that I'm assuming I'm the bee all end all speaker lol) but I would be very open to collaborating on something! I live in New York now, so we're close as can be!! Sending joy to you and all your patients in this week to come and always!!!
So encouraging to see this exchange between the two of you. It made my day to see two giving and helpful people collaborate. It’s exactly the way we all should live. Sending my encouragement and kudos to both of you. Thanks for being an example for us all.
One thing that has a positive impact on my mental health that also has a positive effect on my T1D is eating keto foods. It can be draining having to watch what I eat all the time but when I can just order some keto pizza or lasagna and not have to worry about my numbers skyrocketing afterwards it can be relaxing for me. You mentioned it in the video but I walk a lot now too.
Oh I LOVE this one - I totally know what you mean and completely agree - this is such a great point!! You get that comfort and experience of something special without the BG drama! Thank you for sharing this!!! You always have such helpful comments!!
Thanks for sharing your journey with type 1. I was dx at 12years old and am 58 now. Been wearing an insulin pump since 1997. Dx with celiacs in 2007. I used to get mad at myself when I.would have high blood sugars. When I was blessed with my daughter 16 years ago my focus turned to her and I stopped being hyperfocused on my sugars. I still have moments being tired of having to do "diabetes" but I praise God for all my blessings. With the warmer weather I enjoy being outside in my garden or watching the birds. I have been wearing same pump for 10 years and am learning about them all before I get a new one. Thank you so much for being real.
Hello Andrea
Totally agree with you I feel like the terminator! I just can’t stop.
When I get to that point where I’m like time to stop now and wind down, watching UA-cam listening to music allows me to switch off from it all.
Like you say it’s relentless!
Your videos certainly help to realise that we are not alone.
Thank you
Ahhhh...I feel like we're soul siblings - like the terminator - I feel so seen right now - I know exactly what you mean!! I love your idea of watching YT and listening to music - both things I could definitely benefit from adding more of into my routine!! Thank you! And thank you for saying the videos help...this is the single biggest compliment anyone could ever give me. Thank you thank you thank you. And thank you in turn, because your comment reminds me that I am also not alone 🥹❤️

Thanks for your kind words and taking the time to reply.
It’s so kind.
I’m mentioned a while back that I was waiting for the dexcom which I have been told this week that I’ll finally get it in December!
I can’t quite believe it!!
I’m over the moon and I’m going to go back over your old videos for some tips
I literally can’t wait
Thank you Phil
Gratitude Journals are awesome! 😎 I found that I couldn't always remember to write them into a notebook every night and when I forgot I would be mad at myself, so I instead started to say them to myself every night as I'm emptying the dishwasher and now I never forget ❤😊
This. Is. Genuis!!!! This is extremely smart thinking you know - they say if you want to start a new habit you can tie it and stack it with a current one to make it take hold quicker! So basically...did you know you're a genius???!!! 🥰 ❤️ 🌞

it's always made sense to me to let other around me know about my condition and how it can potentially affect me. i understand some people like to keep it private or whatever but for me i think it's better to let people know; that way when BS level affect my mood i can sense it and let them know what might be coming.
apart from actually taking insulin everyday, i actually sometimes forget i even have it, but that's likely due to being diagnosed as an adult, i got to enjoy my teens and 20's without having to deal with it.
Totally agree! You can alone treat your self well when you are open about it. When you have to hide it for others, then it is diffucult to treat your self always in the right way. Of course that can result in negative reactions, but I got much more support then the 3 or 4 bad situations in 30 years with this condition.
Meditation!....The ultimate holiday from type 1.
Thankyou for all your videos!
Ohhhhhh I never thought about it quite like that but you're SO RIGHT!!!!! I love that headline!!! Thank you so so much for watching!!
Thanks Andrea. You are the gift that keeps on giving. Good useful advice always.
Well that's an EXTREMEMLY kind thing to say - thank you thank you thank you!!!! You, as my subscriber, with the kindest comments are truly the gift that keeps on giving too!!!
Thanks for another great video! Funny but I think we know all points that make BG management easier however constantly trying to check all boxes put some pressure and stress at least on me.
1. Diet
2. Moving my body
3. Intermittent fasting
4. Reducing stress
5. Focusing on digestion
Those work best for me.
Recently I have started experimenting and implementing low fat, whole food, plant plant based diet that seems to cover 1 and 5 in the list as I foud keto quite heawy for my digestion, although it also works.
Thank you so so so so soooo much for your generosity of listing this all out!!! I love ALL YOUR SUGGESTIONS!! I'm taking notes over here!! I was low fat, whole food, pb for a while...I LOVED IT, but at least for me personally, around year 3 I ran into hell with my stomach. It's just my personal story, but I miss it so much, I just can't process the plants like I used to and it makes me so so so sad!! Thank you again for sharing everything above - so helpful and generous of you!!!
Boy do i hear u about stress and living with chronic disease. What I'm realizing and struggling with is where i use to plow thru things including high and lows in glucose swings i no longer seem as able. It's like slowly becoming aware that the disease has slowly progressed over the years and i wasn't even aware of it. Neuropathy, exhaustion from blood swimgs, etc i just becoming more aware of. It's hard work and kind of scary now to me as i feel like I've lost alot of control in my life. It's also hard to ask for help as I've tyhe care taker for so many others. You're right though, broader healthy approach might be something i need to take a look at and figure out what I can control and what I can't
Oh man, I can relate to all of the above that you've said, truly. I guess for me, I'm trying to take a more holistic approach so as to build that overall strength and I'm hoping that will not only have a healthy knock on effect for all the diabetes stuff - but will also give me that strength to deal with the inevitable highs and lows. It's an ongoing work in progress and I think in a lot of ways it always will be, but at least we try, eh! Right there with you on this journey!!
Crawling under the covers to recharge is definitely good, but when physically feeling cold this can take quite some time to warm up, so I've learned to recover/recharge quicker by using an electric blanket.
I OH LOVE THIS!!!!! What a fabulous suggestion!! I use a hot water bottle almost every night - but why not warm the whole blanket!! Sounds so heavenly!!!
Thank you 💕🙏
You are so welcome!!! Thank you so much for watching!!!
Hi ❤❤❤ lets go waiting my while life for that vid as I told you before I have diabetes and those 2 weeks my sugar is 100% in range ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
AHHHHHH THIS IS SO WONDERFUL TO HEAR!!!!!! HOOOORRRAAAYYYYY!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hi dear Andrea! Thank you for this post and sharing this other facet of living with D1. You rock! Wishing you all the good and peace!
Answering your question:
1) I used to hate lating down if I was not sleeping for good, I recently started making a habit of laying down longer in bed or my sofa just to be in silence and rest. 2) Walking definitely helps me a lot....however I have neglected it lately due to physical fatigue at work...I need to overcome it. All suggestions are welcome. 3) I agree and also started doing this lately: giving time for my digestive system to rest. I'm now on the third out of 6 weeks avoiding high FODMAP foods....and I'm feeling way much better!
Ohhh you're so sweet!!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing all of this!!!! I love the idea of laying down and having those 'quiet moments' - something that can be SO restorative. My Mom always says, "even if I can't sleep, I'm resting, and that's valuable" - so you both sound like very smart people I do declare!! And good for you for 6 weeks avoiding FODMAPS...NOT EASY!!!! NOT EASY AT ALL!!!! And how fabulous that it's got you feeling better! I just love everything about this - thank you so much for sharing!!!!!
Can’t believe I just saw you on TV “All the Light You Cannot See” on Netflix. Didn’t know you were an actress and a good one at that.😮
Aw - thank you!!! That was indeed me!! Thanks for the kind words - that means A LOT!!!! 🥹🥹🥹❤️❤️❤️
@@ShesDiabeticYou are a superb and magnificent actress. You’re able to capture the screen with such poise and elegance. I can see you playing just about any role. (Well not a bimbo, airhead or drunken bar maid) 😂 well done young lady 👏
I decompress by taking a bath, thankfully I can do that with my Omnipod. Other times I like to paint.
Ohhhh I LOVE THIS!!! I also love a bath - and I love that I can keep my OP5 on when I'm in the bath so there's not time on when I need to get out and get reconnected. I'm also so impressed by your painting!! I feel like I want to take up something like this - sounds so relaxing!! Thank you for sharing this all with me! 🥹 🎨

As a type 1 diabetic, I like to think that I can do anything I want and that my diabetes won't control me, but I'm finding that extremely hard considering that I'm trying to get my a1c to 6 and stay there for 6 months so I can get pregnant
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I stay connected to the T1D community online. Will be getting coaching from Risely Health after the holidays. It’s just be the most affirming thing to have other T1d’s that can relate to the issues that are important to me. To hear and BE heard by people who understand.
Oh this is so fabulous to hear!!!!!!! I’ve heard amazing things about Risely!! And such a great idea to get that support after the holidays, love love love it!!!
I’m in the crazy over drive mode.. I get it
Yep...crazy mode...I know it well lol!
Hi Andrea I like to change thoughts and ask what (new) watches and phones can used for CGM. I had Iphone Pro Max 12 and I watch 6 that I use. I have a T slim pump and all that goes with it.
I try to do the best I can and to feel what I am feeling, as there is only so much us 'Dia-beaters' can do. i have recently been told that I now have to start using a little bit of insulin, as my ketone readings have been 0.2 or 0.3 I did ask the diabetes nurse whether this was the best approach as my ketone readings are in that state. Basically, the nurse said, "Yes". I have been freaking out because I wasn't given. a split bin or needle bin, so I have an appointment on Monday with a doctor to talk about that. So I am still doing okay, kind of. For me I am also trying to find healthy fats as I haven't been gaining or loosing weight. I am seeing my dietician again on the 18th, so just take things as they come and to do the best you can really GREAT VIDEO!! Btw.
Thank you so much for sharing all of this! I totally understand your anxiety around all of this - diabetes is just SO STRESSFUL sometimes - there are so many moving pieces, and when you don't feel 100% supported by your care team on the things you need them for that can just be ahhh - so stressful!!!!! To feel the feelings is also incredibly healthy I think - rather than just burying them down deep. Thank you so much for being generous and vulnerable in sharing all of the above. You are amazing - keep going - feel those feels and know how incredible you are!!!
@@ShesDiabetic Thank you, I do appreciate that. The most difficult part I have throughout the process is people who I know personally, when they were the ones that actually pointed out that something wasn’t right. Now I have 1.5 they see what I know now as an obsession and they think that diabetes is all the same, which it isn’t. One person said to me, “Well it’s not in your system, so you are better from it.” Even I’m like, “No.” Anyway I am moving forward and getting this whole insulin thing sorted. I have an appointment with my endo sometime in December just to check on how I am doing, so HERE I GO!
I love this channel ! Do you get a lot better hba1c with Omnipod 5 compared to Omnipod Dash?
I love to dance like no ones watching ❤

Covid 19 had done one good thing for me. Made telework from home more normal and a standard. At least at my current project where I can do that for 100%. I have a stressfull job together with beeing president of two national non profit organisations and active in my municipality on several environmental topics, but working from home made that I can keep my numbers easier in range and with less stress. Sleep in the morning an hour longer, can manage easier the day and can go for a walk or cycling after the job in place of traveling home. That make a big difference for me and increased seriously my mental health. Make possible to combine a bussy job with bussy extra activities. Normally this project will be finnished at the end of this year. So I hope that my employer and me can find for next year again an interesting project where I can work most of the time from home! I really hope that will be possible!
My biggest relief after 38 years type one is a CGM and an iPhone. I sleep so much better knowing it will alert me. I have over forty kiddos on my caseload right now as a SLP and I don’t have to constantly worry about hypos around them anymore or getting rid of bloody swabs or on and on and on with testing my blood around people. Now, being able to glance at it and then work or sleep without so much stress has been amazing. Also, having lost my drivers license a couple of years ago due to hypoglycemia and totaling a silly midlife crisis Camaro, I ride a hybrid electric bike to work and the kiddos think it is SO COOL! Mr. Miller, is that your bike??? We love it!! I really enjoy your talks and keep recommending you to my big Sister who is a registered dietician and certified diabetes educator. This month I’m going to my doctor and hopefully he can help me get my license back, but in the meantime it is great exercise. Thanks for putting all of your good, honest information up on UA-cam; I really appreciate it!
Oh my gosh Mr. Miller - you sound SO COOL!!!!! Your students are aboslutely right!!! I love everything about the above - I can just feel your positive outlook on things and honestly, I've taken inspiration from you! Thank you so much for sharing - keep being awesome you, happy biking and also...thank you so so much for recommending me to your Sis! That means the world! Also - how crazy cool that she's a diabetes educator!! Sending you joy Mr. Miller!!! 😍🥹🚴

Hi, Sorry this doesn’t have to do with the video but I wanted to say I really enjoyed your work on Alien Isolation. It was one the scariest games I ever played!
Oh thank you so much!!! It's one of my most favorite games I ever worked on!! Thank you thank you for your kind words and for finding me here!
@@ShesDiabetic Of course! Was it as horrifying to work on as it was for us to play?
Agreed, Alien Isolation was great! Now we just need Squadron 42 to come out. I'll be keeping an eye out for Grace.
@@Atrus999We also need a real sequel to Alien Isolation. Not that mobile game they released that’s not even available anymore. I know the people who made left Creative Assembly but I still hope that we’ll get a sequel one day.
What's this slowing down that you're talking about? 🤷♂
Sometimes you just need a night or two to yourself! (at least I do because I'm quite introverted) you know what I mean? ❤️

I thought diabetes could be reversed with a healthy keto diet and fasting for long periods of time. Even believed that only fat people were diabetic. Goes to show you how much I know 😂
