Very well made video. I definitely see where your coming from with your reasons. This is my thoughts going by what I've seen and heard plus some experience with separate clones. For the device it's self I give an edge to the Hyperkin. Having 4:3 is a very big deal to me so that gives the Retron 3 HD a big benefit. I also prefer the Retron 3 HD power switch as with the SRT 3+ you end up powering systems you don't want to play for a very short time. Doing this has been known to delete save files so is generally not a good thing. The Retron 3 HD avoids this issue. The SRT 3+ does however have a much better set up for controllers. So far 1-0 to Retron 3 HD. NES is honestly a hard one. Sounds and colour is definitely better on the SRT 3+ but not having PAL clockspeed as an option is poor. Overall I have to give it to the SRT 3+ Now it's 1-1 SNES is an easy win to the Retron 3 HD. Having PAL support is a big deal I think and although colors are not quite as good it's very close. The better compatibility is enough to make the Retron 3 HD the easy winner. 2-1 to Retron 3 HD. Genesis is so hard to pick. The SRT 3+ has better colors but has less compatibility since it doesn't play Virtual Racing. The Retron has to be PAL for Master System games though so overall it's a slight edge to the SRT 3+. Interesting it's 2-2. Controller wise I don't think I can pick. The Retron controllers seem way better but not being able to play NES out the box sucks. For me personally it has to be a tie. 3-3. So basically it just depends on what matters to you. For me the Retron 3 HD is the better choice but it's very close.

About the dark colors on Retron 3 HD, could it be HDMI range (sometimes called HDMI black level) mismatch? You can change this in the TV settings. It should auto detect but sometimes it does not work and you have to match them manually at the source (if available) and/or the TV. Anyway, depending which way around it is wrong the result is either super contrasty image with very dark darks (and crushed black details) and blown out white details OR if the mismatch is other way around then the result is washed out image with dark grey blacks and dirty whites.
Excellent review, it helped me decide to get the retro trio, but it was quite close. Since I don't use pal often, that was the difference, again, well done on this video and keep up the good work
9:55 analog outputs are obsolete for me as I no longer have a CRT for retro gaming, but what's up with just composite? I'd be good with at least s-video because I used to use that for SNES, PlayStation, and PC when my old computer had that as a TV output. I know there's HDMI, but still…
I got the Super Retro Trio 3+ first, then a Retron 3 HD. I loved the Retro Trio until I got the Retron 3, and I started enjoy using the Retron 3 instead... for a while. Last night, as of when I wrote this comment, Dragon Warrior on the NES worked great, just some colors were oversaturated and the audio is off (the audio is also off on the Retro Trio as well, but on both, it's not intolerable). But I could play in the original aspect ratio for better accuracy. But today, my Dragon Warrior cartridge no longer starts up in the Retron 3. Blank black screen. I tried other games, and they DO work, but Dragon Warrior just stopped working on the Retron 3. SNES and Genesis games still work, but Dragon Warrior stopped working. Super Mario Bros. 1/Duck Hunt also wont start up. I then put the games that wont work on the Retron 3 into my Super Retro Trio, and they work fine. *So, for some reason, the Retron 3 just randomly decides it doesn't ever want to run certain games anymore* and it's pissing me off. *I switch my vote back to the Super Retro Trio.* I can't play games in their original aspect ratio by using the Retro Trio, but at least my fucking games work on it.
Nice review Gary! I have a SupaRetron HD and really like it for my SNES. It isn't perfect but it works great on my HD TV for my SNES games that I don't want to have any noticeable lag on. Final Fantasy 3 has a weird blur effect if your curious. I used to use a RetroTrio, but I did have some issues with NES as well. These systems work great for the most part, but being a kid in the 80's I wanted a better NES. I bought an AVS for that :) I couldn't take the terrible sound and/or the wrong colors. As for the 16 bit clone parts of those systems, I really like the Hyperkin products for the game compatibility, but the Retrobit products tend to look and sound better with a big plus on the way they managing the controller ports. It's way less wires to mess with on the Retrobit Trio. All in all, if somebody has a bunch of US games, clone carts, and homebrews, and wants to play the cartridges on an HD TV I would go with either one. I know for sure the RetroTrio works with the older Everdrive for Snes and Genesis Everdrive. I used a cheap Chinese Snes and Genesis everdrive on my RetroTrio since I don't want to use my carts anymore. I didn't have any issues what so ever. Even most of the homebrew games worked on the everdrives as well. Take care Gary :)
Thanks so much, consoles like this or what got me reinvigorated and excited for Retro Gaming again! Now I do have HD retrovision cables and my HDMI modded NES, but without systems like these I never would have gotten here
Bought a SRT3+ based on this video, and I love it. Two things I want to touch on that you didn't mention though (I didn't take the time to read previous comments so it may have already been said) color pallette does look better, and nicer on the SRT3+, BUT compared to the original hardware it's still slightly darker, at least on SNES. For NES it looks like there is an antialiasing filter on. Not a big deal to me but it's there. Also for the Genesis cartridge port, you gotta be careful with how you remove the cartridge. Pull one one side, not the dead center and you're fine, otherwise there will be a death grip.
Yes, with any of these budget clones you're going to have a slightly different color pallet and audio, that's pretty common. I've not had the Genesis slot issue myself.
You also can't do two player out of the box with the Hyperkin console. You need a second Genesis controller, a second SNES controller, and two NES controllers in addition to the Hyperkin console, whereas you're good to go with two player action on all three systems, just using the controllers provided with the Retro-Bit console.
Only people that'll affect are the day trippers who would buy these and 5 games they remember and never play them again after a month, collectors who buy these will already have original controllers
Yes Double Dragon 5 The Shadow Falls is based off the Saturday morning cartoon in the 90’s. As a kid I really liked it but was weird that it had its own version of fatalities. Kinda weird to see your favorite cartoon at the time doing hidden fatalities! I believe if you use the L trigger, on Billy Lee as his health is dangerously low, he yells out and falls to his knees as a skeleton. Certain moves from each character would trigger their fatality. Hope it helps!
Nice work Gary. Since you're the master at checking out the sound issues on the NES and specifically with Super Mario Bros., you might consider also comparing the clones to what it is supposed to sound like on your RGB modded NES. That way viewers that may not be familiar (maybe younger or those who haven't played in a while) with how SMB is supposed to sound can compare to the clones sound.
Hi - I think it needs to be mentioned that SRT3+ (at least the launch release system) will not play all NES carts. Any cart where the pin contacts dont go all the way to the bottom will not read. I can explain further if anyone is interested. Stay healthy everyone!
Thanks for such a great review. I have to say, The Trio 3+ Colors, Graphics and Feel, seemed so much better to be. I also love that Controller. I am going to buy it! Thank you :)
You gotta be kidding me that the new version of the SRT+ still won’t have 4:3 ! They better make up for it with that nomad remake... Great video as usual Gary!
Nothing terrible, both Super NES ports on the hyperkin were a little bit tight, but not anything I thought was going to damage the controller or I had to go gorilla to get it disconnected
An issue I have with them is I tried playing knuckles in sonic 2 on the Hyperkin one but it doesn’t work but it works with Sonic 3 & knuckles. Then I tried it on retro trio at first it worked but it often goes back to the title screen any suggestions?
the issue with smb it and its pitch audio via av was always mono, I think you will hear the same issues on the snes when using an adapter to play nes on the snes
Gary, I broke out my SRT 3 Plus yesterday and I actually think for the money it's a good deal! I am used to FPGA and HD Retrovision, along with the RetroTINK 2X. But it's not a bad console at all for a clone. I switched my tv to Game Mode and it made a huge difference. I still play my clones. Even the budget ones. I try to make use of every console in my game room.
@@RoXolid I never have to with the FPGA consoles, but everything else HD I do. I appreciate your video because it got me to give the Trio Plus another chance. It's a very affordable and convenient console!
Yoshi's Island, the Super Famicom version, plays perfectly on my Super Retro Trio and I have it connected using composite to a 27" 4:3 CRT. The aspect ratio is perfect and it looks much better than on an LED flat screen.
Hi, I'm looking to get one of these for my big bubble tv. If we eliminate the hdmi cons, which would be the clear Victor for crt tvs would you say? All replies appreciated!!
Does the SRT3+ work with everdrives? I'm thinking about getting it and since I don't want to buy every single physical game for all three I'm thinking about buying everdrives for them
Hello. I use the basic SR3 and it works with everdrives and multicarts. A friend has the 3+ version and I have never heard him complain about his mega drive flashcart.
I held interest in both of these consoles at one point or another, but I went with the RetroFreak and i've never been disappointed. I'm a little shocked it didn't get showcased here though, but that has multiple slots just like the Hyperkin and the Retrobit...
@@RoXolid Yes, it is. Sadly it still can't play Mega/Sega CD or the 32x and the TerraOnion cart doesn't work it in, but yes its still very much available.
I have had my super retro trio plus for about a year two things I noticed one is the ntcs/pal switch only works on the sega portion of the system. The other is the sega controller ports are working only part time.
@@RoXolid I haven't yet, because I have taken it apart to see how solid the connections are on the sega ports. They look good, just a little wiggly on them. Also I figure for as cheap as the system is I could get another or get a different one later. It is a good overall system for a gamer that wants to run things through hardware clone and not emulation. I do love the fact that my son can play his fix it Felix jr game with no glitches.
Hi Gary, thanks for your thorough analysis. I was looking for a new NES / SNES clone to replace my GamerzTek HD-2 system that just started having HDMI issues, and this helped me to decide on the Hyperkin console featured here. Though I ended up buying the one that "lost", I do appreciate the detail you went into and the fact that you pointed out the reasons one may favor one over the other. Great work as usual. Keep up the good work!
It was my favorite clone system until it started not throwing a signal via HDMI. At first it was occasional. Turning the TV or system off and back on would usually fix the issue. I thought it was just my old TV at first. Now it's gotten to the point where MAYBE if I'm lucky I can turn it off and on or unplug / re-plug HDMI or power it might work. I've tested on 2 newer TV's and get the same result. I haven't contacted anyone because I bought the thing over 2 years ago (after watching your "Should you buy" video on it), and I seriously doubt they would do anything for me at this point. It really was a great system that got plenty of good use, and I don't regret buying it. Now I'm going to try using it on a CRT TV with composite cables.
Is this the SRT+ that was released a few years ago or is it a revision? The one I mentioned has terrible SNES sound. Way over amplified. Retrobit products have consistently had this problem. On the other hand R3HD has reverse duty cycles on NES.
@@RoXolid I see, maybe you lucked out or there was a revision. Anyway, great review. 32:31 There was no region lock on SMS and I don't think any games were optimized for PAL at all. As for the arifacting that looks like that is in the overscan region that would not be seen on a CRT. HDTVs tend to show extraneous picture that would've been cropped on a CRT. SMS had an odd ratio anyhow, so those games are letterboxed even on a CRT, so it may show there too.
RoXolid Productions that’s correct. SMS doesn’t have a region lock unless you count the physical pin differences between SMS and M3. I’m unaware of any PAL games that actually require 50 Hz to run. I’ve owned plenty of PAL games for SMS. There was no difference. There may be a small percentage. I never encountered any. I actually have a modded PAL SMS and the 60 Hz / 50 Hz Switch has been useless for me.
@@pungisotu the only issue is directly related to running ever drives onclone systems, and that's we're switching the region code will allow the game to play
How is the input latency vs software emulation? I've had the retron 5, and have a retropie now, also have tried all sorts of emulators on PC and Android. In almost all cases the latency is noticeable without doing all kinds of tweaks that are either not available or not feasible on lower end devices like the pi or Retron 5. I'm debating between a clone console like this or going full FPGA but the cost for a nice FPGA setup is prohibitive and not as easy to use. I have enough carts still to make a clone console worth buying if the latency is close to actual hardware.
@@RoXolid yeah I know FPGA is kind of the crown jewel for retro gaming on modern TVs, for me anyway as I have no interest in RGB/HDMI modding all my old consoles. Just don't want to keep throwing $$$$ at this hobby just to get some lag-free gaming
Okay... The Super Retro Trio 3+ can let you use any controllers on any systems... Even the padhacked SNES controller into an arcade stick will work. The Retron 3 HD, on the other hand, since that one uses specific controllers on the system you selected, you can get the following -- *8BitDo Bluetooth Retro Receivers for the NES, SNES, and Genesis *8BitDo M30 controller (make sure that you get the Bluetooth one) (Perfect for Street Fighter games on the SNES and Genesis) *8BitDo SN30 controller (once again, bluetooth) (Perfect for most SNES and NES games)
Can these use the original controllers for each system and the Nintendo zap gun ? BTW just found you excellent channel… Also will they both play flash cartridges and wvat power supply voltage is recommended… Last question this is and old device any updated device you would recommend that supports hdmi and composite?
Yes you can use original controllers. On the hyperkin, they actually have an adapter specifically for duck hunt that will allow you to use duck hunt on a flat panel TV. I don't own a CRT so I do not know if these will work with the zapper on a CRT. For power supplies, typically a 5 volt 1 amp is just fine. I don't own flash cartridges or EverDrives so I don't know. Thanks for the compliments and welcome to the channel
I know you had an issue with a PAL SNES game, but SRT+ plays Japanese SNES games just fine. I bought the Japanese versions of Mega Man X 2 and 3 because they were way cheaper than the American releases and have had no issues with them. They also have special chips inside the cartridges which is why I can’t play them on my everdrive so I was worried they might not work, but they do.
The front region switch on the SR3 is only for Sega, and doesn't affect framerate... the PAL version has one additional for SNES which thankfully switches the internal framerate to 60Hz (HDMI output is always 60 but the PAL model is 50Hz internally except for SNES).
@@RoXolid I figured if anyone did, you would! I know some of the widescreen TVs I've had over the years can force it with their internal menu, but it doesn't seem to be a "feature" as much as a random attribute of the way some TVs handle resolutions.
Thanks for a nice and informative comparison! It did make me lean toward Retro Trio, but eyeing it on their website I noticed a warning: "WARNING:: Cancer and Reproductive Harm". Do you know anything about that? Sounds alarming!
Hi Gary. I'm new to your channel. Your videos are awesome. This video was an excellent, thorough review. That was EXACTLY the kind of review I needed because I couldn't decide between these two consoles. What convinced me is the edge on colors and audio on the Retro Trio Plus as well as the location of the controller ports. I do have a question that I hope you don't mind answering. . . How would Mega Drive games like on the Super games 196 in 1 SG Genesis Mega Drive 16 Bit Multi Cartridge by GSMD work? I'd be in blissful glory playing these games. I just got my son and daughter into arcades as I just bought the Street Fighter 2 partycade by Arcade1up. They love it! I told them I wanted to buy another retro console, so they are pumped. Anyway, thanks for making great vids and for your help if you have time. I appreciate what you do. You're awesome, man. -Peace
I have no idea. Many times those multi-carts don't use the proper voltage and can actually damage your system. If you are going to do something like this, I'd honestly recommend a RetroPi.
For anyone interested, I recently bought one of the gold, "Quatro" NES cartridges from Codemasters. I played it on the SRT+ and it is barely playable due to the way the colors present on the TV. The blacks show up as light gray and all the colors seem very washed out. I was getting hit by enemies and environmental hazards in the games that I could not see because they blended in with the background or were invisible in some cases.
I wish you would put the game play side by side but still a good review. Also you can use any controller for any game on the retron 3 so I am not sure why you say you cannot play nes games out of the box
If they updated it, that's terrific! But with mine, when I tested it, you HAD to use the surviving console controller on that system. So for can't use the SNES controller for NES games for example
@@RoXolid I got a question what do you think is the best way to play retro on a modern flat screen, with out going crazy money wise. Retro bit trio 3+, retrotinx 2x pro, or pound HDMI cable for Sega and SNES? I have a lot of games for SNES, Sega and NES I'm curious on your thoughts. They All seem like good products don't think pound has a nes cable though. I'm pretty interested in the retrotink but SNES and Sega component cables are a bit pricey.
@@mattbliven5345 The Pound cables are more for convenience, not for quality so there's that. Here's the thing with the RetroTink2x, you still will want component video cables for the best quality. The Clone systems are also just convenient but sacrifice quality IMO. For me, I'd go with the RetroTink and Component cables myself for better quality.
It looks like I won't be upgrading from my SRT+ anytime soon then, which is only a shame because any time a new clone system comes out, there is always the hope that previous flaws have been addressed and solved. I continue to think there is real value in these style of systems, if only for convenience. I've most recently been bouncing between original hardware and my RetroPie, which has me more curious about those original system HDMI cable solutions. I have the ones for Dreamcast and Saturn, which I dearly love, but I know that these converter cables tend to fall down on the 16-bit systems, so I've hesitated on those.
I've actually done a video on the Hyperkin Nintendo cable for the Super NES and for the Genesis as well, make sure to check that out so you can see the results for yourself
I'm looking into getting the RetroN 2 HD. Deal breaker would be compatibility with Game Genie. It's a nostalgic experience for me, for sure. Have you tried using Game Genie (NES and or SNES) and were there any problems? I can imagine an added component may interfere with communication but I'd like to know before making a purchase. Or, Would I be better off getting the RetroN 5, since it has the built-in cheat database? Great videos, by the way. Definitely clicking that subscribe button!
Great video Gary! I have watched it several times. The super retro trio plus would be a slam dunk if it wasn't for that lack of aspect ratio switch! My tv doesn't allow you to do that either! Right now even when I use my RetroTink everything is stretched. Maybe I'll just wait and see if Gamerztek comes out with a 3 in 1. They might check all of my boxes - decent NES, Master System through HDMI (mini gen HD does this) and the aspect ratio switch. Side note you can probably play master system games at the correct speed through composite on the Retron 3( you could through the mega retron HD )
I bought the retro trio a few days ago and it refused to play SNES games, I got a replacement from amazon which refused to play ANY games so I’m gonna see if I can get a retron3 imported here to the uk cheaply
If I bother, I will, gonna wait till this pandemic crap is over and head to some second hand stores first to see if I can pick up a cheap SNES as I already have the other consoles but liked the idea of the three in one
Just a heads up Battle toads on NES will not work . On any of the retron systems I have tried . And I can get past level 1 just fine no problems . But once I get to level 2 on battle toads it freezes up every time .
@@pixelplayer140 On the NES-side, the color and sound on the Classiq II are not great. The SNES Side is better, but the NES side is not great. Check out my review where I demonstrate this at ua-cam.com/video/dJIyl1wzAyI/v-deo.html
That Double Dragon game where Jimmy & "Bimmy" are wielding swords is most likely based on the animated series from circa the 90's. I've seen the DVD set advertised on amazon, but never got around to ordering it
I own a Retro-Bit Super Retro Trio 3+ system & an AVS too! I'm more than satisfied to have these 2 specific consoles to my video game console collection. I don't own a Hyperkin Retron 3 HD, nor do I want to after watching some videos, like this one on UA-cam. The BASE in the sounds for the Retron 3 HD ARE good, BUT, Visuals always stand out more than just sound. That being said, the Retron 3 HD simply Sucks. Sure, the sound effects in music & itself are swapped (Especially Noticeable in Super Mario Bros. 1 to 3 & Pac-Man!) for these 2 & the Gamerz-Tek console, but again, like I've said before, the Retron 3 HD's visuals flat out SUCKS! (I.M.O.) By the way, this is my favorite video out of the series from your reviews on Clone Consoles!
@ RoXolid Productions Watching the Side-By-Side Comparison videos that you do for these Consoles are Always Fun to Re-Watch! Keep up the Incredible work!
Ok. They're really similar to be honest. The Retron has a more traditional SNES-style Controller, but the Retro-Bit controller is great too. Now, if all you want is Game Boy, GBC & GBA, the Retron Sq is designed with that in mind. Here's more info on that: ua-cam.com/video/WmUM3vNZk24/v-deo.html
@@RoXolid oh man I completely forgot that was coming, I got impatient and got a retron 5 for hd gameboy playing LOL. He didn't have a gameboy growing up, but now he does and I thought it'd be a cool thing to blow his mind with especially since he could trade or battle that way and so far it seems like hyperkin is unfortunately omitting link cable support...
Now that these things have been out for a while i wonder how theyve held up I know in my limited clone console usage that the pin connectors on these things are always the first thing to fail then the controllers
@@RoXolid ive had 4 nes clones 2 retrobit res units one hyperkin unit one old skool/ classique the retro bit units played great the colors being off werent an issue for me (i grew up playing nes on a13 in. B&W tv.) but both retrobit units failed because of the pin connectors becoming loose and mishapen (cheap metal i guess) while the controllers never completely failed the silicone bumpers/spring pad got noticeably softer in less than 5 hours of use so the retrobit units were replaced with a hyperkin unit which at the same time was the exact same internals and controllers as the retrobit and identical controllers I still have the hyperkin unit but with it i did things differently when i recieved it I plugged a gamegenie into it and only change games by plugging and unplugging From the game genie unit The hyperkin controllers I never used them i used an original nes controller and one sansui joycard controller (its a vintage aftermarket turbo controller with turbo and autofire as well as a head phone plug) By doing this ive had my hyperkin unit 4ish years Because of circumstances that i dont discuss on youtube my fiance and i dont live togther i did by another nes clone that is the old skool (iknow the proper spelling school but the company spells with a k) this system was said to be really good well it uses the same garbage pin connector which i suspected but bought it anyway eventhough it was more than double the cost of a hyperkin or retrobit unit Hyperkin and retrobit av out units at the time were 20 dollars the old skool unit at the time was 45 dollars i paid the 45 dollars because the controllers were said to be better than anything else coming out of china For me this was not the case both controllers were defective out of the box The character will stop moving while the d pad is pressed and wont move untill the button is released and pressed again the pad central pivot is actually good on these controllers However the silicone bumpers/spring pad on these controllers are the same weak silicone composition as all the other chinese controllers It was mentioned in several videos that graphical glitches were a nuiscance with this unit this was not the case for me maybe old skool fixed that issue or maybe its because my games are actually clean All the above mentioned is my reasoning for wondering about the quality of construction of the trio units they gone up in price and im not sure if theyre worth picking up

I have a SRT+ and have had NES compatibility issues with games that are not supposed to have issues, like Ducktales and Tetris (both games tested on actual NES). Also, the unit had a lot of dark, oily grease in the cart slots out of the box. I have mixed feelings about the console because of these issues. Do you know of anyone else having these issues with SRT+?
Can someone please tell me if either of these play flash carts specifically the super everdrive for SNES and N8 for NES. Love the channel I am just looking to make a purchase but I am hesitant until I know which will work.
I don't have a flash cart for NES or SNES, just the Genesis one you saw me test. I've heard the Super Retro 3+ doesn't play NES flashcards, but both can do certain SNES ones.
I would, It has a better pallet, better audio, and similar compatibility to the Retron 3 HD. From here, if you want/need Genesis/Mega Drive, Get a Mega Retron HD and call it a day
@@RoXolid cool, I am very happy with 😁. One question: do you use some video upscaler? I like the pictures quality of the super HD but there are games that look fuzzier than others, I have a huge TV and its far from 4k but I would like it crispier, any suggestions? I don't have any idea about scalers. Thanks for the help
Some points you missed: -The region switch on the SRT+ is only for the Genesis side. The NES/SNES side is locked to NTSC. That is why there is a separate PAL-version SRT+ sold in Europe. -The SRT+ outputs in mono only for SNES/Genesis. There is no stereo separation. The Retron 3 HD does have true stereo for SNES/Genesis. This is noticeable when you use a pair of headphones with your tv. -The SRT+ has bad audio on the SNES side. It sound very harsh when compared to the Retron 3 HD or original SNES. Also it's in mono only as mentioned before. -The SRT+ only plays SNES and Genesis Everdrives. It does not work with NES Everdrives. The Retron 3 HD works with all 3 Everdrives. -The Retron 3 HD has better build quality and thicker plastic. The plastic on the SRT+ flexes when you squeeze it, especially the space between the cartridge slots. -The Retron 3 HD has better quality cartridge slot pins and is easier to plug/pull cartridges. I sold my SRT+ awhile ago due to the audio issues and just got the Retron 3 HD. I have also ordered the new version SRT+ Galaxy Edition to see if there are any differences.
@SaturnHST: Hey,i just bought a pal SRT+ because i live in europe. it's totally annoying to play games in 50hz. Can you switch the frame rates with RETRON 3 HD? Playing pal games in 50hz an NTSC in 60hz? Cheers
While I choose MiSTer FPGA over all solutions these days, I would prefer playing an OG NES using RF on an HDTV than using any of those emulation clone systems.
I have the regular Retron 3 and I can use either a Sega Genesis controller to play any of the 3 consoles or a SNES controller too and both work with everything. The NES controller however, that one you can't use to play Genesis or SNES of course because the lack of buttons. The video doesn't show you trying. Did you?
Very well made video. I definitely see where your coming from with your reasons. This is my thoughts going by what I've seen and heard plus some experience with separate clones.

Overall I have to give it to the SRT 3+
Now it's 1-1
SNES is an easy win to the Retron 3 HD.

I had a hard time putting my cartridges into the console. I had to really kinda jam it in. Did anyone have the same problem?
Which one?
@@RoXolid hyperkin console
@@mattmason4013 not that I recall, and not during this test either.
@@RoXolid mine musta been. I had to return it. I didn't want to mess up my cartridges. Cause it was really hard to put games in my hyperkin console.
@@mattmason4013 Yeah, no issues here
Your reviews are always spot on. Subbed.
Thank you so much for the kind words
About the dark colors on Retron 3 HD, could it be HDMI range (sometimes called HDMI black level) mismatch? You can change this in the TV settings. It should auto detect but sometimes it does not work and you have to match them manually at the source (if available) and/or the TV. Anyway, depending which way around it is wrong the result is either super contrasty image with very dark darks (and crushed black details) and blown out white details OR if the mismatch is other way around then the result is washed out image with dark grey blacks and dirty whites.
Great review. Very informative. For me the Hyperkin sounds the best but the darker colours are a shame. Thank you.
This was super helpful! I went for retrobit since my TV does different resolutions!
Question to all.
New at all this!
Recommendations on any newer systems?
And Will Multi Game Cartridges work?
And if so which ones?
Thx!
Thanks for testing and comparing these. It looks to be a toss up to me but i do like Virtra Racing. If just the plus would play it.
Excellent review, it helped me decide to get the retro trio, but it was quite close. Since I don't use pal often, that was the difference, again, well done on this video and keep up the good work
Thanks so much
9:55 analog outputs are obsolete for me as I no longer have a CRT for retro gaming, but what's up with just composite? I'd be good with at least s-video because I used to use that for SNES, PlayStation, and PC when my old computer had that as a TV output. I know there's HDMI, but still…
I agreed! I like S-video over HDMI for older devices.
Thank you for making this video!
Thank you for checking it out!
SRT+ displays in 4:3 when using the composite cables I believe. Kind of defeats the purpose of buying an HDMI console though.
Exactly, my feeling is if you're going to go composite then you might as well go with original equipment quite honestly
just by having all the ports and switches at the front the retro-bit has a massive lead
I am so torn on which retro console to purchase. Also how does the picture quality differ when using the av cables? Thank you and keep playing
Hey Bud. So what is the best system to get as of now today??
Nothing's really changed in the past year to be honest. My favorite 2 in 1 system is the GamerzTek Super HD2
Now I do have HD retrovision cables and my HDMI modded NES, but without systems like these I never would have gotten here
@@RoXolid I got back into these retro games as well when I discovered these clone systems as well.
@@amolochitis30 I've said it before and I'll say it again, these budget friendly clone systems are a great start, but they're not where you end!
You know what, that's a great point and something I didn't even think of since I never play 2 player
I'm going to do that as a separate video. Thanks for all the support my friend!
Hi - I think it needs to be mentioned that SRT3+ (at least the launch release system) will not play all NES carts. Any cart where the pin contacts dont go all the way to the bottom will not read. I can explain further if anyone is interested. Stay healthy everyone!

You gotta be kidding me that the new version of the SRT+ still won’t have 4:3 ! They better make up for it with that nomad remake... Great video as usual Gary!
Nope, same as the original minus composite to lower cost
RoXolid Productions do you know where I can find a full description of the galaxy edition?
Did either of the consoles have controller ports that grabbed onto the controllers too tightly?
You absolutely need to always have game mode turned in!
@@RoXolid I never have to with the FPGA consoles, but everything else HD I do. I appreciate your video because it got me to give the Trio Plus another chance. It's a very affordable and convenient console!
@@jeff97ish Really? I wonder if the FPGA accounts for the delay in flat panel TVs?
@@RoXolid Don't know how they do it, but I have never had lag or latencey with my Analogue consoles, nor my AVS.
If you're going to go to a CRT? Honestly I would get an original console at that point
Is the Retrofreak still available?
@@RoXolid Yes, it is. Sadly it still can't play Mega/Sega CD or the 32x and the TerraOnion cart doesn't work it in, but yes its still very much available.
What i like about Retro Freak is that gameboy advance games look pretty decent on the console
I have had my super retro trio plus for about a year two things I noticed one is the ntcs/pal switch only works on the sega portion of the system. The other is the sega controller ports are working only part time.
Did you ever reach out to Retro-Bit? Their support is awesome
Oh no, what happened to your HD-2? Have you contacted them, that's one of my favorite clones out there!!
@@RoXolid How can I get one in Europe?
@@jouldalk you can Import it. If it is on amazon US they do free imports(no taxation)
@@LaGG thanks. I purchased a super NT in the meantime
Is this the SRT+ that was released a few years ago or is it a revision? The one I mentioned has terrible SNES sound. Way over amplified. Retrobit products have consistently had this problem. On the other hand R3HD has reverse duty cycles on NES.
This is the original super retro Trio 3 plus that I reviewed back in 2018. the audio that you hear is exactly what outputs from the system
@@pungisotu it's not a region lock issue, some systems require you to switch to Pal to play Master System ROMS
FPGA is the better option, ,that being said, I didn't notice any lag myself
@@RoXolid yeah I know FPGA is kind of the crown jewel for retro gaming on modern TVs, for me anyway as I have no interest in RGB/HDMI modding all my old consoles. Just don't want to keep throwing $$$$ at this hobby just to get some lag-free gaming
I hear you, but they DO look great, lol
@@RoXolid yeah they do, no doubt. Thanks for the feedback man. Probably am going to pick up the retrobit.
Okay... The Super Retro Trio 3+ can let you use any controllers on any systems... Even the padhacked SNES controller into an arcade stick will work.
The Retron 3 HD, on the other hand, since that one uses specific controllers on the system you selected, you can get the following --
*8BitDo Bluetooth Retro Receivers for the NES, SNES, and Genesis
*8BitDo M30 controller (make sure that you get the Bluetooth one) (Perfect for Street Fighter games on the SNES and Genesis)
*8BitDo SN30 controller (once again, bluetooth) (Perfect for most SNES and NES games)
Where do you get those stuff
Links are in the more info section to where you can get these systems
Not a rom hack or home brew, it’s an actual game. Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls.
A few others had mentioned that as well
Just purchased a Retro-Bit Super Retro Trio 3+. Mine appears to have a 16:9 switch. I guess I will be seeing soon how well it works.
That's terrific if they made a running change
Thanks for the vid. Very insightful, After watching it, I was not convinced with any. I am just going to stick to my consoles as they are. =)
Absolutely, they play super famicom games without any issue
Hi want to know if the hyperkin 3 hd plays ever drive or other flash carts?
If you're going to do that you're better just doing a retro pi
is this srt3+ stereo or mix When playing md or sfc games?I bought one but no stereo sound. Thanks.
Check the rings on Sonic, it should switch from left to right.
The front region switch on the SR3 is only for Sega, and doesn't affect framerate... the PAL version has one additional for SNES which thankfully switches the internal framerate to 60Hz (HDMI output is always 60 but the PAL model is 50Hz internally except for SNES).
Correct
Do you have/could you suggest a 16:9 to 4:3 converter solution to use with the SRT3+?
I don't know that such a thing exists
@@RoXolid I figured if anyone did, you would!

I have no idea. Many times those multi-carts don't use the proper voltage and can actually damage your system. If you are going to do something like this, I'd honestly recommend a RetroPi.
@@RoXolid Thanks for the suggestion! Also, I didn't know that about the multi-carts.
For anyone interested, I recently bought one of the gold, "Quatro" NES cartridges from Codemasters. I played it on the SRT+ and it is barely playable due to the way the colors present on the TV. The blacks show up as light gray and all the colors seem very washed out.
I've actually done a video on the Hyperkin Nintendo cable for the Super NES and for the Genesis as well, make sure to check that out so you can see the results for yourself
did you try putting the darkwing duck game to PA? retrio trio has 2 different pal settings
Yes, I have tried all the settings, it runs fast on all of them, My understanding is that the PAL switch is more there for the SNES side than anything
What about Paperboy/NES and Star Fox/SNES on the Retro Bit?? Do they work?
I don't know about paperboy because I don't own it, Star Fox works without a problem
I bought the retro trio a few days ago and it refused to play SNES games, I got a replacement from amazon which refused to play ANY games so I’m gonna see if I can get a retron3 imported here to the uk cheaply
Very weird, let me know how it goes!
If I bother, I will, gonna wait till this pandemic crap is over and head to some second hand stores first to see if I can pick up a cheap SNES as I already have the other consoles but liked the idea of the three in one
I get that, one condensed system is nice, but nothing beats original equipment
Yeah, I’ve bought a SNES off of eBay today so gonna go official
Have you tried street fighter alpha 2 snes?
No, I don't own it, sorry
Are either of them compatible with the 32X or the SuperFX chip?
Neither work with the 32X, there's no input for the cable. Both work with the SuperFX Chip for the SNES which I do demonstrate in the video
Just a heads up Battle toads on NES will not work . On any of the retron systems I have tried . And I can get past level 1 just fine no problems . But once I get to level 2 on battle toads it freezes up every time .
Correct, I don't know any clone that plays Battletoads

Sure, the sound effects in music & itself are swapped (Especially Noticeable in Super Mario Bros. 1 to 3 & Pac-Man!) for these 2 & the Gamerz-Tek console, but again, like I've said before, the Retron 3 HD's visuals flat out SUCKS! (I.M.O.) By the way, this is my favorite video out of the series from your reviews on Clone Consoles!

Thank you so much for the kind words!

Biggest question I have is if I was to pick a SNES clone machine exclusively to play super gameboy which one would you pick?
How important is having a 4:3 aspect ratio to you?
@@RoXolid my TV can change the aspect ratio, so it's fine if it doesn't support that
Ok. They're really similar to be honest. The Retron has a more traditional SNES-style Controller, but the Retro-Bit controller is great too. Now, if all you want is Game Boy, GBC & GBA, the Retron Sq is designed with that in mind. Here's more info on that:

@@RoXolid oh man I completely forgot that was coming, I got impatient and got a retron 5 for hd gameboy playing LOL. I wanted to secure a good SNES clone as a gift for a friend along with an imported super gameboy that I've hacked a link cable port into. He didn't have a gameboy growing up, but now he does and I thought it'd be a cool thing to blow his mind with especially since he could trade or battle that way and so far it seems like hyperkin is unfortunately omitting link cable support...
Just wondered
Can the console work with the Famicom disk system by using a famicom converter ?
Never tried it, I just got a stand alone FDS within the last few days so I'll have to try it.
@@RoXolid ok
@@RoXolid so does it work?
I was at an event all weekend and editing the footage for today's video so I haven't been able to test it yet.
@@RoXolid k
How is the input lag?
Pretty similar on both
Is possible saving in anytime or not?
Nope. But battery saves and passwords.
Now that these things have been out for a while i wonder how theyve held up
I know in my limited clone console usage that the pin connectors on these things are always the first thing to fail then the controllers
I don't really use them a ton since I have original hardware, but anytime I've had to go back and re-test something with them they still work.
@@RoXolid ive had 4 nes clones 2 retrobit res units one hyperkin unit one old skool/ classique the retro bit units played great the colors being off werent an issue for me (i grew up playing nes on a13 in. B&W tv.) but both retrobit units failed because of the pin connectors becoming loose and mishapen (cheap metal i guess) while the controllers never completely failed the silicone bumpers/spring pad got noticeably softer in less than 5 hours of use so the retrobit units were replaced with a hyperkin unit which at the same time was the exact same internals and controllers as the retrobit and identical controllers
I still have the hyperkin unit but with it i did things differently when i recieved it
I plugged a gamegenie into it and only change games by plugging and unplugging
From the game genie unit
The hyperkin controllers
I never used them i used an original nes controller and one sansui joycard controller (its a vintage aftermarket turbo controller with turbo and autofire as well as a head phone plug)
By doing this ive had my hyperkin unit 4ish years
Because of circumstances that i dont discuss on youtube my fiance and i dont live togther i did by another nes clone that is the old skool (iknow the proper spelling school but the company spells with a k) this system was said to be really good well it uses the same garbage pin connector which i suspected but bought it anyway eventhough it was more than double the cost of a hyperkin or retrobit unit
Hyperkin and retrobit av out units at the time were 20 dollars the old skool unit at the time was 45 dollars i paid the 45 dollars because the controllers were said to be better than anything else coming out of china
For me this was not the case both controllers were defective out of the box
The character will stop moving while the d pad is pressed and wont move untill the button is released and pressed again the pad central pivot is actually good on these controllers
However the silicone bumpers/spring pad on these controllers are the same weak silicone composition as all the other chinese controllers
It was mentioned in several videos that graphical glitches were a nuiscance with this unit this was not the case for me maybe old skool fixed that issue or maybe its because my games are actually clean
All the above mentioned is my reasoning for wondering about the quality of construction of the trio units they gone up in price and im not sure if theyre worth picking up
I have the Retro trio3+
and it works decent for a clone console, some games have issues running, IDK if I am the only one who experienced this but bubble bobble has artifact issues when multiple sprites are on the screen
Not sure, I don't have a copy, sorry
11:59 WOW! A tv doesn't have ratio buttons?
Not all do. Plus, even if it does, for streaming or capturing you're stuck with 16:9

The hyperkin retron 3 is the best system
do u have the retron 3 hd or the older retron 3??if u have the retron 3 hd does it seem too play nes games ok??i heard that the super retro trio plus snes side has distorted sound..is the snes ok on the retron 3 hd?
I have a SRT+ and have had NES compatibility issues with games that are not supposed to have issues, like Ducktales and Tetris (both games tested on actual NES). Also, the unit had a lot of dark, oily grease in the cart slots out of the box. I have mixed feelings about the console because of these issues. Do you know of anyone else having these issues with SRT+?
I have not had any of these such issues
Can someone please tell me if either of these play flash carts specifically the super everdrive for SNES and N8 for NES. Love the channel I am just looking to make a purchase but I am hesitant until I know which will work.
I don't have a flash cart for NES or SNES, just the Genesis one you saw me test. I've heard the Super Retro 3+ doesn't play NES flashcards, but both can do certain SNES ones.
Would you still recommend the super HD 2 from gamerz tek over this two systems? I bought it because you recommended it to me on a message 😉
How can get this Super HD 2 in europe?
Castlemania Games Ships to Europe!
@@RoXolid sorry I didn't understand.
Can you post a link?
Witch one is better
did u test sim city ?
I appreciate your video thank u. Can games be saved?
On the cartridges themselves, yes, but not to the consoles.
Some points you missed:
-The region switch on the SRT+ is only for the Genesis side.
My system sounds fine on the SNES side. I've also found the pins on the Retron 3HD to have a tighter grip on carts, especially the Genesis-side.
If I can plug in a NES controller to these systems can I plug in a NES gun and play duck hunt?
No, light gun games to not work on flat panel TVs
Does it work with original controllers?
Yes it does!
18:32 One of the more frustrating NES TITLES...I'll stick to TMNT3!
I have the regular Retron 3 and I can use either a Sega Genesis controller to play any of the 3 consoles or a SNES controller too and both work with everything. The NES controller however, that one you can't use to play Genesis or SNES of course because the lack of buttons. The video doesn't show you trying. Did you?
Yes, in the full blown reviews on each console I demonstrated that.
Does either one play Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy? It's a gen rom hack. It didn't play on my homebrew wii.
I don't have it to test, sorry
