  • The funniest comment on Germany I've ever heard -- and from a German actor. Please forgive the jumpy edit. I took out some irrelevant silliness between the sections that was fun but detracted from the question. ALL COPYRIGHTS ARE THE PROPERTY OF THEIR RESPECTIVE OWNERS. NO INFRINGEMENT INTENDED. UPLOADED FOR FAN APPRECIATION.

    Finland was basically Hitler's ally on the Eastern Front. While not officially, but in practice. German army helped Finns to attack on the Lapland front in Continuity War 1941-44, while Finns attacked in southern front, and while Finns were not directly involved with the siege of Leningrad, Finnish troops were close by, on Germany's side. Hitler supplied Finns with weapons like Panzerschrecks. Later Stalin forced Finns to drive Germany out of the country in the war of Lapland 44-45, as one of the peace conditions. Finnish volunteers also served in Waffen-SS, as an elite unit. They were part of the Wiking division. This was because Finland as a small country didn't have much choice, and Hitler's Operation Barbarossa was the perfect time to get payback on the Soviets, after Winter War.

      Interesting historical information. Clearly, though, Germany did earn its widely-known reputation. I think Finland was an ad lib comparison, and he could have come up with a better example, perhaps, but his response about Germany itself is hilariously honest and really made me laugh. And I'm part German.

      Finland was defending their country from the soviets and trying to retake land that was lost to them. They didnt submit to Germany, they just had a common enemy at that time. If they wanted to submit to an overwhelmingly larger force they would have submitted to the soviets in the winter war.

      @@amethystvale True but Finland allowed Germans passage through their lands, there was lots of German soldiers in Lapland region trying to push forward to capture Murmansk (while they failed). And German Stukas were stationed in Immola, Finland, their over 1200 bombing runs combined with Finnish artillery actually helped Finns to withstand the big Soviet counter-attacks in Karelian Peninsula 1944. Finland and Nazis were allies, in everything but on paper.

      And of course I understand this comparison was ad-libbed, no harm done. It doesn't surprise me this isn't common knowledge, it's not the first thing Finns mention about their past.

    Giving Germany more bad rep for a joke

    • @TheNthDoctor
      @TheNthDoctor  Рік тому +14

      In reality, Germany gave itself a bad name long, long ago. We all know it's not modern Germans, and the country itself doesn't have a "bad name" for current events. The consequence of its history, though, is that it's nearly impossible to think of Germany without thinking of that past evil. Some things leave a permanent stain. I think Germany has done a lot to prove they are NOT their past, though.

      @@TheNthDoctor I am so sick of being German and that the one thing people think when they hear that is nazism and Hitler. Completely looking past previous history such as the Holy Roman Empire, Prussia, the Empire or even inventions like automobiles, better pens, better Airplanes and even fucking space travel. Hitlers reign lasted 9 years and it is all people see Germany is now, just looking past centuries worth of solid history. We have changed everything for it and pay billions of Euros every year as penance for the war. I know it was only 80 years ago but jokes like these just add injury to insult, especially coming from a German comedian as well.

      @@TheNthDoctor I'm not sure. Or at least, things seem to be changing. On Quora or Reddit discussions on which country has the most disgraceful, shameful or horrible history, Germany often isn't even mentioned. Or it's mentioned just in passing, among many countries with a troubled past. I'd have expected it to be right among the "top 10", or "top 5" even.
