I know fans already know this but, for the 10%, back when NBC cut his show for Leno, his staff was basically laid off. Conan then for almost a year, paid his staff out of his own pocket, and then paid the staff that came with him to LA, their moving expenses, and living expenses until the show started and they're back on TBS payroll. This alone says a lot about Conan's character and relationship with his staff. Fallon, Kimmel, etc, may just be themselves and their staff, but Conan and his people are one. Thank you, Coco.

The writer's strike era of Conan was likely the best late night television ever. Dude is way funnier off the cuff than he is scripted. Jay Leno at that same time in every joke, was implying people were drunkards, drug users, sexually promiscuous, or made jokes/innuendo about female anatomy. While Jay proved his limited comedic abilities, Conan was proving his genius and redefining what late night television could be. I'd love to see a documentary on Conan and his handling of the writer's strike, a montage segment of Leno saying the same punchlines for different set ups would be hilarious in this context.
RE: "...a guy riding a zipline through his audience night after night is more mature than *the guy who cheated him out of a job,"* But didn't Conan greenlight an *NBC* proposal that was deciding Jay's retirement date so Conan could have his job?
Because Jay said on his own show "See ya in five years" and said on camera Conan would be getting the show...look it up. It has all been well documented on film and in books.
However, it's well documented in Bill Carter's excellent book "The War For Late Night: When Leno Went Early & Television Went Insane"" that Jay's "see ya in 5 years" comment was the result of *NBC's* prodding. Jay knew nothing of Conan's deal with the network until after it was made, and since his only choices were "you can congratulate Conan and leave in 2009" or "you can complain, but you'll still leave in 2009," Jay graciously chose the former- never imagining that 5 years later the network would be begging Jay to stay.

As a kid I always thought Conan was one of the funniest people on TV. Now? I think he also is one of the most wholesome. The way he shines a light on and interacts with his staff is wonderful. Conan has always been held back by late night writing. His stand alone travel shows and one offs, riffing with his staff like Sonia and Jordan are his most successful works. He was born to be a comedy sketch UA-camr not chained to a studio
Conan wrote some of the best Simpson episodes. He’s intelligent and he feels way more honest, based on everything he’s done so far. He loves to take the Mickey out of himself. Such a shame that he called it quits. He will be missed
I pray Conan just continues to have success in everything he does. He is genuinely the best to ever do it. If you don’t like Conan I probably don’t like you all that much,
Years ago I listened to a podcast made by some Brits, and Conan was a guest. He shared a story of a conversation he had with his father. His father said that Conan was making a living from a condition that should have been treated by medicine. For a while Conan felt quite hurt by those words, but, in time, he decided his father was right and made his peace with it.
I think the most interesting thing to me is that this Harvard grad who wrote for one of the most famous sitcoms in the history of television somehow has never lost his sort of “man of the people” worldview and style. Like I think it was Paul Simon who said the more famous you get, the harder it is to write songs people can relate to, since you’ve become more disconnected from the masses. But somehow, with everything that should distance him from his audience and even his staff, he seems to just…get it, I guess. He’s the one in a million celebrity who really keeps it real and stays true to who they are. And I think that’s really inspiring.
If you listen to his podcast he seems to avoid surrounding himself with yes people. He prefers genuine people who will tell him the truth. That certainly helps. A lot of people prefer to surround themselves with servants who will do as they say, so their views get very distorted.
I was a huge alternative sketch comedy fan growing up, watching Mr. Show, Kids in the Hall, etc. and Conan was the only late night host that captured that same energy of cutting-edge, borderline dangerous comedy… and he was somehow able to do it on a nationally aired major network show. As far as I’m concerned, Conan was my generations Carson and Letterman and he will always be one of the greatest of all time.
The writer's strike episodes are my favorite of all time. This was peak Conan. Also.... I'm glad so many others agree. I thought I was alone. I have found my tribe.
I think Kimmel is at least entertaining, and he gets a lot of hate, most of which is unwarranted. With that being said, he doesn’t hold a light to Conan
@@xxballsofgold4512 Are we talking about the same Kimmel? Kimmel was funny like 10 years ago but now he is on the unfunny list with fallon and colbert. And the hate for Kimmel is totally warranted. He and Colbert spend their time kissing their politician friends asses and got so unfunny.
Political and current events-based humor that many hosts have will be more trendy and popular for a short time, but Conan's simple goofiness and comic absurdity will be timeless and can be enjoyed no matter the nationality and age range.
He’s just flat out naturally funny and likeable. You can tell he’s a genuinely good dude. The other talk show hosts come across as fake, forced “comedy”. Only someone like Conan can do it to the level he does it cause he’s just being 100% genuinely himself.
I remember these shows. I was expecting a train wreck, and that's exactly what happened! But it was a GREAT train wreck! Conan did a FANTASTIC job at delivering an entertaining show during those trying times without his pool of talented writers!
Conan will be celebrated in the future. He will undoubtedly be watched and adored by our future generations. His humour is simply timeless and something the world needs and will be in the future.
Man, his team loves him so much they actually follow Conan through thick and thin. 0:37 Spotted Jordan, Andy Richter, and Aaron. They've been with Conan since the earliest days probably, and still with Conan up till his last show on TBS.
Everyone just kindda forgets Craig Ferguson. He was one of the OG's, the very best. Conan's one of the greatest in the world, alongside Ferguson. Those two were the greatest.
YES! EXACTLY! Imo, Craig is the best ever. Sure, Conans got a lot of fun gags and such, he’s got well written jokes. But no tv host has ever actually made me cry from laughing like Craig. Him and Peterson man, holy SHIT.
fun fact, when i was like 6 my mom wrote a letter to craig telling him that i was a big fan. a few weeks later he sent me an owl puppet and a letter written for me
I love Conan and he's definitely the best talk show host. Conan had a very big and positive impact on me, he taught me not take myself serious and his videos helped to manage my anger issues, now there are not many things that can offend me.
@Bilbo Flappers my dude, I’m an independent that hates both sides, and I absolutely hate Colbert and Steward, but no one wants to hear your political bs in a UA-cam comment section, we have rallies for that
God, watching the writer's strike shows as a kid was amazing! Such chaotic energy tinged with desperation and anger. You could tell things were right at the edge for Conan and the crew, but they killed it.
Time and time again I come back to this video and I can't ignore the fact that I know I will be watching this video after his inevitable passing, crying with a huge smile on my face
Conan, is the last of the breed of hosts who listen and actually joke around with their guests, instead of just laughing like a moron at every turn... Love ya Conan, you'll be surely missed.
While other talk show hosts need a structured preplanned format to entertain the audience, Conan thrives in the improv, random, and wacky comedy. He is at his best when doing things loosely and deviating from the plan. Mean while, other's can do anything without that blue card and teleprompter.
He's the only talk show host to actively make me laugh. Saw him on youtube about 10 years ago and been a fan since. Can't believe the two Jimmies are still on the air.
i love how conan has silly/absurd sketches and relatively serious interviews then on the other end of the spectrum craig ferguson has not many sketches but really absurd interviews and both of them are the best it goes to show that being a good late night host is so much about being unique, no matter in what part of the show you're doing that.
conan will always have a special place in late night. conan was an original, exciting late night host who actually showed his personality through his comedy, unlike someone like fallon or kimmel. he treats his fans, employees and guests so well and try to make a genuine relationship with them. even though he got kicked off of tv, he's still adjusting. he has an hbo show coming up, an extremely successful podcast, and a giant yt community ( see this video and team coco ) he's a genuinely funny guy, and he will always be the best. great job conan. great job
All I can say is some of the best ERA of Conan was when I was working a second shift job and I would come home every night watch the last little bit of Jay whatever his name is and then get something to eat and watch a fresh show of Conan O'Brien and I just remember how good and how these were like the golden years between 04 to 07 but I'm going to clear this up now for everybody. Conan O'Brien has never been bad at anything he's ever done. The one thing I take away from him is that he's relatable and very humble and super kind and I think that is something that we could all take away from this legend. Thanks Conan for the laughs and I hope that you keep rocking out on HBO Max here very soon......333
Aaaah memories. I used to write codes in between catching up with everything accessible on Conan on UA-cam. Now I tell people to write codes whilst catching up with everything accessible on Conan on spotify. Yep, no one will ever touch me the way Conan has, so to speak.
I met Conan for the first time a few days before Christmas in 2018. He was the nicest man ever when my camera wouldn't work correctly. However, I turned around to thank him for the Springfield Monorail and he was gone. Conan is a time-traveler.
Writer’s Strike Conan was some of his best material especially his “beef” with Colbert and Stewart over credit for Mike Huckabee winning the Iowa Caucus.
The only other host that’s close is graham Norton but that’s a different style of host graham just knows how to jell celebs together and make the conversation flow .
I swear... I miss Conan... like, a lot. So happy to have been a teenager and in college when Late Night was at it's peak. This was absolutely prime Conan, through and through.
Not only is Conan a comedy genius on top of his 'book smarts' as a Harvard guy, but he always gave props and respect to the ones that came before him, and speaking highly of David Letterman, and always referring himself to the "student" of the Late Night shows, and that's what I love him the most about. Best Late Night host to learn humility from. Not a comparison, but Craig Ferguson was also great, and I also watched Letterman growing up. Gained respect and started watching Kimmel after he defended Conan and ripped Leno, but Conan's improv ability and creating comedy out from awkward situations and his banters with regular people even from his days in Late Night is what separates him from others.
Other than Craig Ferguson, Conan has been my favourite talk show host. His wit, intelligence and genuine goofball nature are what has kept me a fan for all these years. Plus the remote he did in Ghana two years ago made me love him even more as an African. Late night is going to feel empty without this wonderful man.
I first watched Conan’s clips of his interactions with animals and instantly fell in love with his comedy and charm. He’s just so goofy and genuine, I love how little it takes for him to make someone laugh. His curiosity and care for the animals was so refreshing when it seemed every other host was scared or unsure about them, Conan would hold it and not freak out when he learns it’s dangerous, always staying relatively calm. These clips were so chaotic but just a taste to his masterful comedy, truly a legend and I admire the man a whole lot. Team Coco forever!
Conan was like the post-modern talk show host and comedian who really bring what the talk show looks like in post-modern world. Comedy never ends for this man.
i follow him since my highschool years, somewhere in 1996-1997. love the guy. he's so humble, smart and very funny. greetings from croatian oldie olsen ❤️❤️❤️
Started watching him with friends on VHS 📼 tapes my friends would tape and share since we couldn’t stay up in high school late 90’s. I am 41 now, and can declare, he’s the GOAT of late night
Some of the funniest comedians in history are extremely intelligent and possess a skill that ironically displays their insecurities while fooling the audience into believing the opposite. It's a very hard thing to master. Conan makes jokes at his expense because he can then control what you think of him. Colbert and Stewart used cynicism in the info-tainment arena. They are both very active in charitable foundations dealing with people and situations that go overlooked. Letterman was the ultimate introvert host relying on banter with guests and Paul to make up for not wanting to be the center of attention only coming in with one liners. Fallon, Kimmel, Lopez, Meyers, Noah and a whole host of others are just entertainers looking for laughs rather than creating them. Conan is one of the best. Johnny Carson did the exact same thing when he started out and his characters are now Iconic. Also why did I write such a long post?
I really appreciate your post, I agree with what you say i don't think anyone cna go near the versatility and almost manic comedic abilities of Conan. He can do it all! Although I was pissed off at Jay I'm so glad it gave Conan the ability to reinvent himself in a way that makes him a legend. Thank you for breaking it down. I appreciate nothing more than a thoughtful and insightful unpacking of comedy and comedians

I love Conan. I mean, love him. But you still probably wouldn't like me all that much.
The 2nd or 3rd question I ask people when I meet them is if they like Conan.

"I see what you're doing. You make a living one 'yuk' at a time."
The podcasts are even better. Conan's aging like fine wine ♥️
I love his podcasts so much. His improvisational humor really shines in that format. 💜
It is so nice to be able to hear Conan's unfiltered perspective, not to mention his slew of amazing guests!

What I loved about Conan were his travel series. He's so down to earth and self- deprecatingly funny.
Put like lpl
I was a huge alternative sketch comedy fan growing up, watching Mr. Show, Kids in the Hall, etc. and Conan was the only late night host that captured that same energy of cutting-edge, borderline dangerous comedy… and he was somehow able to do it on a nationally aired major network show. As far as I’m concerned, Conan was my generations Carson and Letterman and he will always be one of the greatest of all time.
The writer's strike episodes are my favorite of all time. This was peak Conan.
Also.... I'm glad so many others agree. I thought I was alone. I have found my tribe.
Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon don't hold a fucking candle to this guy. Conan is by far the Greatest of this generation of Late Night Hosts
Kimmel is doing Politics and Fallon is doing his fake laughs. You are right these muppets are not in the same universe as conan
@@Marcelg13 he’s definitely unfunny/fake laughs but his show is pretty entertaining. If there’s one thing I’m not gonna talk about it’s politics
Yup
Political and current events-based humor that many hosts have will be more trendy and popular for a short time, but Conan's simple goofiness and comic absurdity will be timeless and can be enjoyed no matter the nationality and age range.
Man I've never watched conan in the old days. It looks like absolute carnage and I loved every second of it. Cheers!
He's been doing this since '93 and it has been this good the entire time
Conan's show was at its peak in the early - mid 2000's.
You should find mid 90s conan. It was insane
Conan's show was the only one not to miss a beat during the Writer's Strike.
Only Conan fans here!
When he kicks John booth lmao!!!!!
Conan has an onlyfans page?!?!?
Only Conan👀
Grateful that the algorithm brought me here on the first day. See you again in 5, 10 and 14 years
Conan will be celebrated in the future.
Man, that actor playing John Wilkes Booth just got absolutely destroyed.
Conan did not hold back!
I was cracking up, he laid him out
read this comment just as I was watching that. Lmfao
Conan’s known for his stiff style.
As he should ):< lol
Everyone just kindda forgets Craig Ferguson. He was one of the OG's, the very best. Conan's one of the greatest in the world, alongside Ferguson. Those two were the greatest.
Agreed. Craig Ferguson was the most honest and open late night talk show host. His comedy was every bit as good as Conan.
Yes, there is no one close to them.
YES! EXACTLY! Imo, Craig is the best ever. Sure, Conans got a lot of fun gags and such, he’s got well written jokes. But no tv host has ever actually made me cry from laughing like Craig. Him and Peterson man, holy SHIT.
fun fact, when i was like 6 my mom wrote a letter to craig telling him that i was a big fan. a few weeks later he sent me an owl puppet and a letter written for me
Conan and Craig are the best
"Long live the king of late night" - Norm Macdonald
I love Conan and he's definitely the best talk show host. Conan had a very big and positive impact on me, he taught me not take myself serious and his videos helped to manage my anger issues, now there are not many things that can offend me.
If only watching him made you look atleast like a human not a deranged orangutan.
The writer's strike Conan episodes should be cemented in television history as some of the most brilliant things produced
Nothing was ever better than Conan, Stewart and Colbert's weird little crossovers of meta talk show mayhem.
I think you're forgetting Johnny Carson.
@Bilbo Flappers Wrong, right, and wrong again.
@Bilbo Flappers we got a snowflake right here
@Bilbo Flappers dude, you act like anyone is gonna take you seriously, this is a UA-cam comment section
@Bilbo Flappers my dude, I’m an independent that hates both sides, and I absolutely hate Colbert and Steward, but no one wants to hear your political bs in a UA-cam comment section, we have rallies for that
Writers strike had some of the best shows.
Ironic isnt it?
It was the only time I ever watched all the late night episodes without missing a single one.
Creativity thrives in difficult times
Writers Strike Conan was peak Conan and no one can convince me otherwise
God, watching the writer's strike shows as a kid was amazing! Such chaotic energy tinged with desperation and anger. You could tell things were right at the edge for Conan and the crew, but they killed it.
Time and time again I come back to this video and I can't ignore the fact that I know I will be watching this video after his inevitable passing, crying with a huge smile on my face
Conan, is the last of the breed of hosts who listen and actually joke around with their guests, instead of just laughing like a moron at every turn... Love ya Conan, you'll be surely missed.
Conan with a beard is a 10
While other talk show hosts need a structured preplanned format to entertain the audience, Conan thrives in the improv, random, and wacky comedy. He is at his best when doing things loosely and deviating from the plan. Mean while, other's can do anything without that blue card and teleprompter.
I love this man. He’s like a real life cartoon character
He's the only talk show host to actively make me laugh. Saw him on youtube about 10 years ago and been a fan since. Can't believe the two Jimmies are still on the air.
i love how conan has silly/absurd sketches and relatively serious interviews
then on the other end of the spectrum craig ferguson has not many sketches but really absurd interviews
and both of them are the best
it goes to show that being a good late night host is so much about being unique, no matter in what part of the show you're doing that.
I can’t believe that there was a time where I chose Ellen over Conan. I’d like to go back in time and slap that version of me
I would like to go back in time and slap you, too.
Yeah Imma join the dude above me in slapping you too
Same
Yeah me too it is slap time

The writers’ strike shows were some of the best TV I’ve ever seen. Just non-stop laughter every night.
conan will always have a special place in late night. conan was an original, exciting late night host who actually showed his personality through his comedy, unlike someone like fallon or kimmel. he treats his fans, employees and guests so well and try to make a genuine relationship with them. even though he got kicked off of tv, he's still adjusting. he has an hbo show coming up, an extremely successful podcast, and a giant yt community ( see this video and team coco ) he's a genuinely funny guy, and he will always be the best. great job conan. great job
The world will never have another absolutely amazing late night call show host like Conan O'Brien
Honestly writers strike Conan was the absolute best. I enjoyed pure unscripted Conan more than any other time in his show.
The writers strike was one of the best things to happen to Conans show. These were my favorite episodes
Conan is definitely the best of the hosts out there right now. You go boy. Woohoo!
Craig Ferguson too
I agree Conan and Graham are my favorites
This feels nostalgic for some reason and I've been only a fan for like a year.
conan doesn’t need guest to run the show, he’s brilliant
Conan’s the best, no cap. Funny, intelligent, compassionate, kind, and a redhead.
Before pandemic started I've been thinking of a way to visit his show. God knows how it is possible now. my sister and I adore him!
Started watching him with friends on VHS 📼 tapes my friends would tape and share since we couldn’t stay up in high school late 90’s. I am 41 now, and can declare, he’s the GOAT of late night
Been watching conan before going into college, now my two kids have already finished college and I'm still a fan...
I am dejected and downhearted that the show is ending. I feel like crying.😥
i feel the same way 😞
@@bigguy3021 I know. But it's the end of an era and it won't be the same.🙁
Some of the funniest comedians in history are extremely intelligent and possess a skill that ironically displays their insecurities while fooling the audience into believing the opposite.
@@kirthi117 Sometimes the things we want most are the things that hold us back. There is no right or wrong way to find success or happiness. As long as you have the courage to look, it will find you.
Holy cow, I forgot how wild the late-night show was. Conan’s the fucking best
Conan in many ways is the best of American TV. Classically funny and beloved and somehow completely self aware while having funny.
The goat and inspiration for how i conduct myself and how I articulate when I speak. This man is truly one of my inspirations
Conan's show is the only late night show that thrived at the Writers' Strike
To this day I remember the strike episodes of Late Night for being so funny, with all due respect to the writers.
Because he still acts like a kid. Not a gamer kid that’s the norm in this generation but still a kid in every other way. All other hosts follow the same old variety or political satire show but he’s the only one who is delightfully crazy enough to truly mix it up. Love Conan! 😄
Conan is a gamer though, and a clueless one at that
He’s honestly the most genuine talk to host ever…. TEAMCOCO ALL THE WAY
this was the peak of my childhood cable watching in the philippines, this aired and this was so fun to witness along with the shows around the same era. good times
The rockets in the elevator: I laughed to myself “that is so stupid”, then he said the same thing. Truly a man of the people.
Conan is, was, and always will be the best. No contest, no contender exists.
you know the host is genuinely good when they can pull the show off completely by themselves without relying only on their guests
I love how his laugh can go from genuinely happy to worrisomely maniacal in a heartbeat
I never knew how much I needed Conan to sing creep, miss his show
A bit of trivia: Radiohead were the first musical guest on Late Night. Guess what song they played.
I’ll never forget watching this run of shows. Best three weeks of television ever.
The thing I like the most about Conan is that he comes across as the most genuine and humble of the those night show hosts.
This is said so often but holy fucking shit, Conan is an amazing comedian. He's so fresh and weird and fun without being mean or snarky. Everytime you watch him he just makes you laugh and have a good time.
Why hasn't the .gif of Conan, Colbert and Steward dancing taken off yet?
Coincidentally in my recommended after the writers came back again! Nice job y'all 😌
Late Night w/ Conan was on such a different level of comedy. The best ever
