  • The MIM-104 Patriot is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, the primary of its kind used by the United States Army and several allied states. It is manufactured by the U.S. defense contractor Raytheon and derives its name from the radar component of the weapon system. The AN/MPQ-53 at the heart of the system is known as the "Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target" which is a backronym for PATRIOT.

The patriot is a complete fraud since the beginning. It failed to intercept a single scud missile in the Iraq war and it keeps failing to intercept most home made rockets the Palestinian fire at Israel.
And that's the real reason it will never be deployed in Ukraine.
...oh, and btw, the Soviet era S300 are still better than anything the west has and Russia already has S600 and S700 coming down the pipe, the US is more than 20 years behind in technology.

Like I said, people don't know what they are talking about. America did not have its patriot system in Saudi during the 2019 Houthi drone attack. Saudi's did have an old export version that never saw an upgrade since the 90's. It had about 20 missiles versus an attack of over 100 drones. You don't use patriot on drones. The USA has C-ram, jamming, and anti-done drones for their assets. Patriot is for missiles. Not drones.

@@MardukTheSunGodInsideMe like I said, other than the fraudulent tests in which the patriot hits a target that's being illuminated from the ground with a laser you don't have a single documented case of the patriot hitting ANYTHING AT ALL...not one miserable interception.

We owe Brigadier General Robert “Bob” Drolet our thanks for Patriot’s missile intercept capability. Originally, Patriot was an anti-aircraft system. In 1990 Saddam Hussain targeted Israel with SKUD ballistic missiles. The U.S. did not want Israel to participate in Desert Storm due to the coalition’s Arab nations involvement. So, General Drolet was tasked with re-programing Patriot on-the-fly to convert it into an anti-ballistic-missile interceptor. We all sat at home and watched the first Patriot/Scud intercepts on TV. The mission to keep Israel out of the war was a success thanks to Patriot and Bob Drolet - the smartest man I’ve ever known. Bob proved my assessment before Congress after the 1st Gulf war. An MIT professor challenged the Army’s claims of effectiveness for Patriot/SKUD intercepts based on video evidence. Bob, in his usual manner, made the academic look foolish because he failed to account for video shutter speed when reviewing 6000 mph intercepts. When I worked for Major Drolet in NATO in the mid ‘70s, he was always the “go-to” guy among our senior commanders. Lockheed Martin recognized that when he retired from active duty, making him head of all their space programs. This is a man America should be rightfully proud of, and I was very fortunate to call him my friend. God’s speed. Bob.

I just went down the Robert Drolet rabbit hole and what an awesome journey that was. I too was born in Mass. and my father was a veteran of the cuban missile crisis. He served on a destroyer in the blockade and was Captains guard. My dad, Richard Drolet was a marine and a proud one at that. Good to see other Drolet's serving their country. Thanks again for the info on this amazing man.

I was in the Army and was a radar op for 12 years on the Patriot system. 1999-2011. The system usually always is just a piece in a network of systems. Threat assessments are done hourly. Other systems or pieces like manpads Stingers, etc. Are usually incorporated. Thaad as well. With the number of other system incorporated in ukraine I see this system being a significant piece added to their defense. And whoever said this system was ineffective against the Houthis you're wrong. Ask them the humber of misses shot down..

The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.

Why there was no mention of the new radar that was selected for the Patriot system, built by the Raytheon, that will, for the first time, give the Patriot system a 360 degrees coverage. This is huge. If only Patriot received new launch tubes that could be positioned vertically and therefore give the missiles the capability to shoot at 360 degrees, at all direction, which is currently impossible since the missiles can target a threat that comes exclusively from the front. If an enemy fires a long range cruise missile and programe it to attack the Patriot battery from behind, the new radar will be able to see it but the missiles would be useless.

For example, while installing 3-D nozzles on top end fighter jets (Su-35, Su-57, etc) is very nice looking... in actual wars, where speed, energy efficiency, & linear acceleration are more important than slow-motion crowd pleasing, public air show stunts (which the Su-35 and other Russian jets are better at)... the 2-D of the F-22 & as well as the easier traditional exhaust technologies in the F-35 is more than enough.
Why, for example, design a nuclear sub that is twice as big as what the US has, as its top class, in the Ohio, of close to 20,000 tons... when you could operate 2-3 of those, being in 2-3 difference places, as opposed to operating just one 48,000 ton sub, in ONE place?
The might Nimitz and Ford classes of aircraft carriers, however, are needed, if you have to project real fire power around the world... because each is part of a battle group of 15 - 20 ships, including a nuclear sub or so... each battle ground having the power to obliterate 90% of the armed forces of the world...
Anyway, what is the benefit of designing & operating only a dozen or so bombers (Russia's Tupolev Tu-160, at Mach 2+.... that could carry 5 or 10 or 20 nuclear bombs of 1 MEGATON blast yield ... when you could use 100s to THOUSANDS of F-15, F-16, F-22, & F-35 to carry more than one B61 gravity nukes that may have a yield blast of close to 500 KILOTON already?
Remember, the 10K pound FAT MAN bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki was only TWENTY ONE (21) Kilotons & it already had such a devastating impact!
Besides, ICBMs fly up to Mach 26 .... each ICBM may be carrying up to 14 smaller MIRVs, each smaller warhead preprogrammed to fly to a different target, once released from the mother ICBM at terminal velocity, each smaller MIRV warhead being capable of having up to a 200 KILOTON BLAST YIELD....
And if ICBMs are used, there will be 100s to thousands of cheap, non-nulcear warheads flying in the mix, to confuse the defense missiles of the enemies... so intercepting many hundreds of ICBMs & many THOUSANDS of smaller MIRVs are a fool's errand...
So, then, there's really no need to resort to using either fighter jets or bombers, if you're going to resort to doing a nuclear war against other nations with dozens to hundreds of ICBMs...

@@kiabtoomlauj6249 Correction. US Carrier strike groups (CSG) aren't composed from 20 or more ships, they are much smaller. An aircraft carrier is supported by one Ticonderoga class cruiser, one or two Arleigh Burke class destroyers, one frigate (formerly that was Oliver Hazard Perry class but now US Navy hasn't got any frigates until the new Constellation class becomes available), one oiler, one support ship and usually one or even 2 of the Los Angeles or Virginia class attack submarines.
Occasionally one or two ships from our allies joins the CSGs as part of an exercise. But even then CSG doesn't come close to having 10 ships, let alone 20. Although CSG is the main fighting formation for projecting US Navy power across the globe, we don't have enough ships to spare so many of them within the CSG. Our destroyers have many other roles to fill beside providing air defense for the aircraft carriers.. Roles like the ballistic missile defense for example..

Then when the tech comes out to make them obsolete which it always does your stuck with the bill and garbage. If you can make a cruise missile stealth then you cut the cost considerably for each missile and does not need to be fast just undetectable which gives you first strike capable as well.

I was a Marine infantry platoon commander in Vietnam 1968-69. I had very good training but it still didn't adequately prepare me for combat in Vietnam. There was a lot of on the job training to learn how to fight effectively in the many different environments such as jungles, mountains, rice paddies, pine forests, and elephant grass. I also learned the lesson of the enemy's ability to try to overwhelm you with numbers. While I lost a lot of Marines killed and wounded, we were able to prevail. However, if they had just a few more soldiers, I'm not sure we could have survived a real swarm attack.
So I worry about today's expensive high value targets ability to defend against swarm air or missile attacks. If a Patriot battery has X number of missiles and the enemy launches X+1 missiles, then the ship or ground targets are destroyed.
In stead of declaring climate change an immediate threat to out nation, I would hope that a future President will ask congress to provide the funding so the military can address swarm attacks against our strategically important targets. It should be virtually impossible for an enemy to penetrate a carrier strike group's defenses. It should be virtually impossible for an enemy to penetrate our land based missile defenses.
Such an initiative would be very expensive, but what is the cost of losing an aircraft carrier with 5,000 men and billions of dollars of equipment? And what is the cost of a US city or strategic target being destroyed?
A battery of Israel's Iron Dome cost about 50 million dollars and each rocket costs somewhere between $40,000 an $100,000 dollars each to shoot down a home made HAMAS rocket that costs perhaps less than $1,000 each. In terms of protecting lives and damage to civilian infrastructure, Israel considers Iron Dome to be cost effective. But Iron Dome is just a first technological step to the development of Iron Beam which is a laser system that Israel claims will cost about $2 dollars per shot to destroy incoming missiles, mortars, artillery, and drones.
Today, we have about 12 aircraft carriers of which about a third are being modified, a third being readied to deploy, and a third on or ready to deploy. So, on average we have about 4 aircraft carriers either on active deployments or could be on active deployment. In WW II we had 36 aircraft carriers because we were in a world war and we knew we would suffer losses and we wanted the ability to continue to attack despite those losses. We seem to have lost the idea that we will suffer losses in a future war.
I don't know all of the defensive capabilities of the carrier strike group, but it has been well publicized that they lack an effective wake following torpedo defense. This is a torpedo that instead of targeting the ship itself, it fires a torpedo behind the ship and lets the torpedo follow the wake of the ship and strike it from behind. For God's sake solve that problem and all of the others to protect the carrier strike group from swarm attacks.

Ukrainians have repeatedly shown adaptability and modifications to weapons they already have to defend their territory. Their strategies are brilliant and effective. It’s not a matter of learning how to operate complex systems. That’s a no- brainer. It’s about getting what they need and when. Just enough to accomplish their mission and preserve freedom from states that relish tyranny, destruction, and oppression.
