I assume Putin wanted to end it quickly in february to avoid casualties. Now that Nato and Europe involved and they were not able to do it which was due to imo primarly intelligence delivered by Nato. With that failed Russia has no choice, but to end ukraine by force. I think ukrainans will overthrow Zelensky in the future when conditions get bad. Just look when russia actually takes them seriously now. They declared martial law and actually are obliterating their infrastructure and actually fighting a war and not doing some surgical operations on the front lines to not hurt civilians. Ukraine is about to enter much much much worse territory than it was before.

Well, I think that military exploitation in wars/confilcts more important parameter. For example in Israel in confilcts and routine with patriot pac 2, they succeed to intercept many drones and two jets past ten years. We don't see in a news that in Ukraine or somewhere c300 or c400 intercept something.
The mobility of an air defense matters only in so far as the mobility of it's defended asset is concerned. If you're trying to defend a base, for example, the mobility of the system is completely irrelevant as the defended area is stationary. If you're trying to defend a mobile front line unit, mobility is a much greater concern. But that opens up the question of "how many resources are you willing to deploy to protect front line units". Any country is going to have a limited number of air defense systems, they cost millions of dollars per, and are difficult to replace. So it's difficult to justify mobilizing air defense for front line protection at the cost of defending a stationary base (which will in all likelihood be the tradeoff in that situation). The only time mobility is a genuine and present concern is in the case of acquiring/building an in theater base. In that case, rapid deployment of air defense systems is a vital step in the process. Wether or not 20 minutes would make the difference is, however, an open question.

Also that the S-400 is a much newer platform which went into service in 2007 while the Patriot system went into service in 1981. As well as that Patriot is PESA while S400 has multiple radars that are multiband mix of AESA and PESA. Furthermore, S400 has double the range for both radars and missiles. S-400 needs only 5 minutes to be deployed while Patriot needs 25 minutes. Furthermore, the Patriot system is stationery, so it cannot move to prevent being retaliated against. It also takes 50-60 men just to set the entire thing up and 30 in men to operate the different parts (missiles, radars, command centers). S-400 can track and engage double the targets compared to Patriot - it can lock on to 72 targets at the same time, while Patriot can lock on to 36 targets. There is no comparison. S-400 wins hands down. Patriot is comparable to older systems like S-300.

I remember that during the Desert Storm, the Patriot system performance was not very good despite that it was propagandised as a success. Also about three years ago, the Yemeni insurgence drones and missiles, not very complex ones, attacked a Saudi refinery and Patriots were the Saudi's air defence and were unable to stop it. Now consider such a missile as Iskander, which can be re-targeted in flight, meaning it can manoeuvre after the launch to the Yemeni simple missiles. So the "combat tested" does not look so good. Saudi Arabia wanted to buy S400 after that, but was stopped from doing so. Also, the decision by Turkey, a prominent NATO member, to purchase S400 instead Patriot says much about the two systems. And if you know that the US put sanctions on Turkey to discourage the purchase, and Turkey still bought S400 underline which system is superior and I think significantly superior (I think Turkey now is negotiating second S400). Do not forget that the Patriot system were used only when the US fought against "superpowers" like Libia, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan (as all the US weaponry) what calls some more questioning into these super-weapons if the enemies are to be Russia or China.

One of the main advantages of the S-400 is that missiles are launched in any direction in azimuth. 360 degrees without launcher rotation. The patriot does not have this - to change direction by 180 degrees - you need to turn the entire launcher. On the S-400, the radars also scans all 360 degrees. That means that Patriot need two batterys to do job of one s 400 Battery.. At the Petriot, the radar looks only for 1 sector - this is shown in the video. 1 battery S 400 consists of 8 launch trucks, which means that , you get the opportunity to launch 32 missiles at once, the second one is not said at what altitude the S 400 can hit the target and that is up to 55 km And perhaps the most important thing is the speed of a rocket that can fly at speeds of up to 8,700 km/h(45 % faster then any Patriot missale!!! In addition, the S 400 will never be in position without the buk m2 and Tor m2 system there for almost is impossible to use AGM-88 HARM against S 400 as his range is 80 km only from 25 km altitude.. And that's why I think Russia has built the best air defense systems in the world ..by huge Margine..
I think it is a bit of an early jump to call Russians' air defence the best, when the Usa air defence has not even been put to a full use... Ukraine has only been given a small demo version and what have they already achieved with that? Russians are scared of operating near Ukraine airspace. It seems to work perfectly fine for the two batteries continuing to operate in Ukraine. Imagine if Ukraine had the US Air Force, US Navy, USMC, and US Army air assets, plus the remaining Patriot batteries and THAAD batteries under the command of US forces. I don't think it would be even remotely close since Russia can't make it past Ukraine.
These systems are designed as big payload interceptors and manned aircraft. It isn't for stopping cruise missiles, low altitude etc. Those are other systems jobs. They work well because their deterrent factor to military strategy, they are a factor that is forced to be delt with. Limiting action or forcing larger commitment.

Even the modernized S300's are proven to be superior. News was that a modernized version of the S300 shot down two Ukrainian jets flying at low altitudes in POLTAVA. That's like what, 300km from the Russian border. Very impressive.
It's the same S-300 system that Syrian mistakenly shot down Russian military airplane in Syria Sept 2018, which they thought it was Israel jet fighter. That's a big problem with Russia anti aircraft systems like Buk M2, S-300, S-400, S-500, etc. They don't have capability to recognize friend or foe, jet fighter or airplane, just lock and shoot first, talk later. The S-400 was advertised to only have the secondary capability to shootdown missiles and rockets, its main use is for anti-aircraft which is already proven last Febuary when an S-400 from the Russian side of the border shoot down a Ukrainian airforce Su-27 over Ukrainian capital city of Kiev piloted by veteran pilot Colonel Oleksandr "Grey wolf" Oksanchenko. From the Russian border to the Capital city that is an estimated range of over 250km away. No other SAM system has ever done a kill like that over that range, and even the latest and longest range variant of the Patriot looks like a peashooter compared to the S-400

We might not know about the technology behind the systems but we do know a couple things thanks to Ukraine. Kinzhals are unable to destroy Patriot battery. Yet ATACMS have no problem destroying S400 batteries

And yet 3 have been destroyed in Crimea. Even slow moving HIMARS rockets are making it through to destroy the S-400. HIMARS rockets travel at mach 2.5 which should be easy pickings for an S-400.
That was a pretty unbiased assessment. The only problem with most videos and assessments is the classified nature of the systems. Actual combat effectiveness data is hard to come by and we're left with making assumptions. If assumptions are included then one has to ask why are the Israelis seemingly impervious to Russian air defense systems ? I am no expert...I suspect that the S-400 is a air defense system to be respected but isn't nearly as good as the Russian would have us believe. I also suspect the same of the Patriot system...good but it has limitations. I also suspect that the Russians and the Americans are probably never going to go "head-to-head" in a real shooting war, so we have to rely on how well "proxy users" employ the systems. They don't talk about Patriot's biggest disadvantage: Patriot doesn't have radars inside its missiles while S-300 and S-400 has. So S-300 and S-400 can shoot down planes that are flying on low altitude. In September Russian S-300 shot down Ukrainian MiG-29 from 230km range - this is the record for longest range SAM kill.

@Corey Leander Yes they do which is why there are very low sorties over Ukraine for both sides, Russia has S400, while Ukraine has S300. Both sides are frequently swatting aircraft out of the skies on a daliy basis and it's also why aircraft that are flying are doing so at very low altitudes and away from the systems. Doing so however makes them vulnerable to MANPADS however. Russia is also using S300 systems but bizarrely as a land-based attack role which is a bit finicky/temperamental shall we say. The S400 are in Crimea and there has been photos taken of them there.

phased array radar is so highly advance. less moving part and able to adjust its directional beam foaming without moving its dish. it changes the wave lighting fast to track moving target, in theory its able to track faster moving target and multiple target at once. its almost like having 1000's of individual mini radar dish on a single dish. i always say, what makes a good air defense is having its radar able to detect and track. you cant shoot down what you cant see. phased array perform better without having a second scanning radar that other conventional radar used. although scanning radar still a plus. the west know this, this is why the buk and other system can be destroy by drone and missiles.
No it is not like "1000's of individual mini radar dish on a single dish". Nothing like it. That would imply that such a phased array radar could track 1000+ targets simultaneously but it can't. That is not how it works. You can't individually steer 1000 radar beams from a 1000 element phased array. A beam is made up from the electromagnetic field of a number of active elements. So you need multiple elements working together to create and steer a beam.
@Dean G to make it simple. Home wifi router is phase array but with 3 to 5 antenna. They called it mimo that dose beam foaming. It directs its wave length without moving its antenna or has a different design to it. It becomes directional rather than wide area. It can direct 360-degree field in a certain spot. The attenna length matter for wave length as its 5 gigahertz and 2.4 gigahertz . It becomes a dual band using both frequency with beam foaming. So, if you know how the lobe of the wavelength actually gives the directional path, it can switch the directional path to every pulse simultaneously on a target. Those elements on the antenna are what I mean by 1000s of mini dishes. Also, online, they called it element, which... voltage regulators that reason it cause the lobe to change.

The “Patriot” that failed to intercept SCUDS IN Saudi Arabia 29 years ago was the PAC-1. Today's Patriots are the PAC-2 for long range interceptions over 100 miles and the Smaller quad packed PAC-3 patriot for interception of missiles. PAC-3 has a record of 240 successful missile interceptions in Saudi Arabia using hit to kill technology. The Patriot system is vastly more sensible. S-400 fires upward to allow supposedly easy engagement of targets from any direction but this wastes a valuable second compared to patriot which is pointed in the threat direction. Patriot can curve back or missile cells are simply orientated in the other direction. Patriots problems in Gulf war were due to a time stamp click software bug that developed after long stand by periods.

Theres a cheap second hand Patriot unit available for sale in Kiev, it has a little bit of battle damage from a Kinzhal Missile, and comes with empty missile tubes as they were used in a fireworks show last week. Both are about the same or maybe the Patriot is a bit better because of its sensor link capability. In the end it doesn't matter at all. The russian doctrine was build around stopping the US of getting Air Supremancy by massive numbers of long range SAMs. But we now see that this doesn't work. Russia probably has not a lot of these systems. If a MIG-29 with a HARM can destroy an entire S-400 system, I don't want to know what other systems like the F-35 could do.
@@Globalscanningeyes Range of an AGM-88 HARM is around 100-200km. And I don't think an S-400 battery would be able to shoot down, track or even be able to detect an F-35 from 200km away. Since russia has probably used its whole stockpile of S-400 missiles there's no need to argue about that.

You can use dummy aircrart. The radar is opened to track and lock at you. Later you detect it by antiradiation dron and damage it. That tactic is used in Azerbaijan war...

Both are very capable and the patriot will be a great fit for taking down russian missiles since that is their primary purpose. Help me with this: S-400s are cold-launched, so it doesn't have a direction when it leaves the canister, i.e., there is no "opposite side" for S-400. Patriots are launched in the canister, so their side is predetermined by the orientation of the launcher. So, long story short: it depends. Both were designed for different roles based on military doctrine. Both have unique advantages and disadvantages that can be exploited by a capable military, and both are having to adapt due to changing tactics on the battlefield. Personally, give me AESA radars all day long. Yes, more expensive, and maintenance is higher, but they have proven to be far more effective. Overall, the Patriot is more versatile in the kind of defense provided, but the S-400 is more mobile, and in high enough numbers, may be more effective at incoming aircraft or missiles.

Well, I think that military exploitation in wars/confilcts more important parameter. For example in Israel in confilcts and routine with patriot pac 2, they succeed to intercept many drones and two jets past ten years.
We don't see in a news that in Ukraine or somewhere c300 or c400 intercept something.
The mobility of an air defense matters only in so far as the mobility of it's defended asset is concerned. If you're trying to defend a base, for example, the mobility of the system is completely irrelevant as the defended area is stationary.
If you're trying to defend a mobile front line unit, mobility is a much greater concern. But that opens up the question of "how many resources are you willing to deploy to protect front line units". Any country is going to have a limited number of air defense systems, they cost millions of dollars per, and are difficult to replace. So it's difficult to justify mobilizing air defense for front line protection at the cost of defending a stationary base (which will in all likelihood be the tradeoff in that situation).
The only time mobility is a genuine and present concern is in the case of acquiring/building an in theater base. In that case, rapid deployment of air defense systems is a vital step in the process. Wether or not 20 minutes would make the difference is, however, an open question.

I remember that during the Desert Storm, the Patriot system performance was not very good despite that it was propagandised as a success. Also about three years ago, the Yemeni insurgence drones and missiles, not very complex ones, attacked a Saudi refinery and Patriots were the Saudi's air defence and were unable to stop it. Now consider such a missile as Iskander, which can be re-targeted in flight, meaning it can manoeuvre after the launch to the Yemeni simple missiles. So the "combat tested" does not look so good.
Saudi Arabia wanted to buy S400 after that, but was stopped from doing so. Also, the decision by Turkey, a prominent NATO member, to purchase S400 instead Patriot says much about the two systems. And if you know that the US put sanctions on Turkey to discourage the purchase, and Turkey still bought S400 underline which system is superior and I think significantly superior (I think Turkey now is negotiating second S400).
Do not forget that the Patriot system were used only when the US fought against "superpowers" like Libia, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan (as all the US weaponry) what calls some more questioning into these super-weapons if the enemies are to be Russia or China.

One of the main advantages of the S-400 is that missiles are launched in any direction in azimuth. 360 degrees without launcher rotation.
The patriot does not have this - to change direction by 180 degrees - you need to turn the entire launcher.
On the S-400, the radars also scans all 360 degrees. That means that Patriot need two batterys to do job of one s 400 Battery..
At the Petriot, the radar looks only for 1 sector - this is shown in the video. 1 battery S 400 consists of 8 launch trucks, which means that , you get the opportunity to launch 32 missiles at once, the second one is not said at what altitude the S 400 can hit the target and that is up to 55 km And perhaps the most important thing is the speed of a rocket that can fly at speeds of up to 8,700 km/h(45 % faster then any Patriot missale!!! In addition, the S 400 will never be in position without the buk m2 and Tor m2 system there for almost is impossible to use AGM-88 HARM against S 400 as his range is 80 km only from 25 km altitude.. I think it is a bit of an early jump to call Russians' air defence the best, when the Usa air defence has not even been put to a full use... Ukraine has only been given a small demo version and what have they already achieved with that? Russians are scared of operating near Ukraine airspace. Модульная , многократно модифицированная с цифровой обработкой сигналов (чем не может похвастаться ЗРК С400 ибо элементная база слабовата) ЗРК Патриот с огромным заделом серьезнейший противник в воздушной войне . It seems to work perfectly fine for the two batteries continuing to operate in Ukraine. Imagine if Ukraine had the US Air Force, US Navy, USMC, and US Army air assets, plus the remaining Patriot batteries and THAAD batteries under the command of US forces. I don't think it would be even remotely close since Russia can't make it past Ukraine.
These systems are designed as big payload interceptors and manned aircraft. It isn't for stopping cruise missiles, low altitude etc. Those are other systems jobs. They work well because their deterrent factor to military strategy, they are a factor that is forced to be delt with. Limiting action or forcing larger commitment.

That was a pretty unbiased assessment. The only problem with most videos and assessments is the classified nature of the systems. Actual combat effectiveness data is hard to come by and we're left with making assumptions. If assumptions are included then one has to ask why are the Israelis seemingly impervious to Russian air defense systems ? I am no expert...I suspect that the S-400 is a air defense system to be respected but isn't nearly as good as the Russian would have us believe. I also suspect the same of the Patriot system...good but it has limitations. I also suspect that the Russians and the Americans are probably never going to go "head-to-head" in a real shooting war, so we have to rely on how well "proxy users" employ the systems. Great video...really informative.
They don't talk about Patriot's biggest disadvantage: Patriot doesn't have radars inside its missiles while S-300 and S-400 has. So S-300 and S-400 can shoot down planes that are flying on low altitude. In September Russian S-300 shot down Ukrainian MiG-29 from 230km range - this is the record for longest range SAM kill.

Both sides are frequently swatting aircraft out of the skies on a daliy basis and it's also why aircraft that are flying are doing so at very low altitudes and away from the systems. Doing so however makes them vulnerable to MANPADS however.
Russia is also using S300 systems but bizarrely as a land-based attack role which is a bit finicky/temperamental shall we say. The S400 are in Crimea and there has been photos taken of them there.

phased array radar is so highly advance. less moving part and able to adjust its directional beam foaming without moving its dish. it changes the wave lighting fast to track moving target, in theory its able to track faster moving target and multiple target at once. its almost like having 1000's of individual mini radar dish on a single dish. i always say, what makes a good air defense is having its radar able to detect and track. you cant shoot down what you cant see. phased array perform better without having a second scanning radar that other conventional radar used. although scanning radar still a plus. the west know this, this is why the buk and other system can be destroy by drone and missiles.

You can't individually steer 1000 radar beams from a 1000 element phased array.
A beam is made up from the electromagnetic field of a number of active elements. So you need multiple elements working together to create and steer a beam.

@Dean G to make it simple. Home wifi router is phase array but with 3 to 5 antenna. They called it mimo that dose beam foaming. It directs its wave length without moving its antenna or has a different design to it. It becomes directional rather than wide area. It can direct 360-degree field in a certain spot.
The attenna length matter for wave length as its 5 gigahertz and 2.4 gigahertz . It becomes a dual band using both frequency with beam foaming.
So, if you know how the lobe of the wavelength actually gives the directional path, it can switch the directional path to every pulse simultaneously on a target. Those elements on the antenna are what I mean by 1000s of mini dishes. Also, online, they called it element, which... voltage regulators that reason it cause the lobe to change.

The “Patriot” that failed to intercept SCUDS IN Saudi Arabia 29 years ago was the PAC-1. Today's Patriots are the PAC-2 for long range interceptions over 100 miles and the Smaller quad packed PAC-3 patriot for interception of missiles. PAC-3 has a record of 240 successful missile interceptions in Saudi Arabia using hit to kill technology. The Patriot system is vastly more sensible. S-400 fires upward to allow supposedly easy engagement of targets from any direction but this wastes a valuable second compared to patriot which is pointed in the threat direction. Patriot can curve back or missile cells are simply orientated in the other direction. Patriots problems in Gulf war were due to a time stamp click software bug that developed after long stand by periods.

S-400 can track and engage double the targets compared to Patriot - it can lock on to 72 targets at the same time, while Patriot can lock on to 36 targets. There is no comparison. S-400 wins hands down. Patriot is comparable to S-300.

Both are about the same or maybe the Patriot is a bit better because of its sensor link capability. In the end it doesn't matter at all. The russian doctrine was build around stopping the US of getting Air Supremancy by massive numbers of long range SAMs. But we now see that this doesn't work. Russia probably has not a lot of these systems. If a MIG-29 with a HARM can destroy an entire S-400 system, I don't want to know what other systems like the F-35 could do.

Both are very capable and the patriot will be a great fit for taking down russian missiles since that is their primary purpose. It was sold to everyone, unlike the S400 system, which was used only 9 years ago, especially in Syria. It only shot down some old Russian planes in Ukraine, with a percentage of less than 35%, so it started. Russia quickly developed the S500 system, which some secret experiments showed that it was as bad as the S400, so Russia has not produced it to date. No country is willing to buy Russian systems, except for backward countries like Algeria or countries trying to discover the technology to manufacture defense systems as Russia did 40 years ago. A year ago, an American Patriot system received from Iraq was dismantled to manufacture the S300 system

Help me with this: S-400s are cold-launched, so it doesn't have a direction when it leaves the canister, i.e., there is no "opposite side" for S-400. Patriots are launched in the canister, so their side is predetermined by the orientation of the launcher.

Both have unique advantages and disadvantages that can be exploited by a capable military, and both are having to adapt due to changing tactics on the battlefield. Personally, give me AESA radars all day long. Yes, more expensive, and maintenance is higher, but they have proven to be far more effective. Overall, the Patriot is more versatile in the kind of defense provided, but the S-400 is more mobile, and in high enough numbers, may be more effective at incoming aircraft or missiles.

There were some obvious mistakes about S-400. One of them is the sistem was designed for air targets. No. The main porpose of this rocket complex is defeating the war heads with nuclear charges. It can purely be coordinated with space satellites. The sistem has a ground-ground variety. S-500 is already in production.
