2024 Hyundai Kona | Wiser, More Capable...but that Styling??

  • The Kona small SUV has done exceptionally well for Hyundai since its 2018 debut, but my initial drive left me lukewarm. That was until I experienced the Electric model which impressed me so much that it became the first new car I’d ever purchased. Flash ahead 6 years and an all-new Kona has arrived…this time designed from the ground up as an EV with the gas models finding their way in. From that comes the Kona’s best upgrade - more spaciousness and versatility. The previous model was just a little too small behind the front seats. And then there’s the avant-garde styling which frankly is a miss for me.
    MSRP as-tested: $34,695

Although weird looking, I applaud Hyundai for giving it a distinct design.

I love my base SE gas model 2024 in Soultronic orange! It looks like a spacey electric car at a $25K price tag and has plenty of power and lots of technology. I love having a car that doesn't look like everybody else's car!

I suppose looks are subjective, but this looks a hundred times better inside and out than the previous model design to me.

The ride height seems pretty high, almost Subaru Crosstrek like. The front fascia definitely gives the ugly duckling vibe of the yesteryear's HHR and PT Cruiser.

The Kona always had "busy" styling, but it is not offensive.
The back seat was the biggest problem before, and that is solved.
With 190 HP, AWD, an adult sized back seat, and state-of-the-art tech, for $30-35k, the Kona sounds like a good reason to step up from a 138 HP, FWD only Chevy Trax

Wireless Carplay is there. It's an OTA update. Dont let this reviewer deceive you!

@stevehammes Your viewers are counting on you to give factual information. With you not saying it doesn't offer wireless, Apple Carplay/ Android Auto is misleading. ALL the new Hyundai and Kia infotainment screens now offer it. Being that the Kona is the 1st to get the new infotainment, the Wireless Carplay will be over the air. It should roll out now, as my neighbor has it on his new 2024 Kona.

@@jraheemjefcoat429 Calm yourself. I’m glad they’re finally doing an OTA update for a years-long issue with wireless CarPlay. This video was shot and produced in November and as of that time this was true. I’ll be curious to see if the April infotainment update will provide this functionality for older models.

@stevehammes Older models won't get it because of the screen compatibility. The reason why Hyundai and Kia didn't offer wireless from the beginning, because they want to be the sole proprieter of the navigation app instead of Google. That is why the base models with the 8-inch screens offer wireless, and the bigger one with navigation doesn't. There have been long negotiations between the two parties. But they finally got it resolved. Now Hyundai got what they want.. Which is to control their own navigation system.

*Sigh* It sure makes me miss my Lime Twist 2020 Kona Limited 1.6t. That’s for sure. The only win I see here is the increased rear seat space with air vents. This is a downgrade imo. Which is rare for Hyundai!

These hyundai designs are going to age so poorly. My 22 Sonata, which I always thought wa ugly (it's a company car) and it's already looking ridiculous. The lights on the hood are peeling up, the chrome is peeling off the door panels, and already looks several model years old now thay they've redesigned it. Same with this. This is all aside from the poor reliability. Just my experience.

They seriously need to fire the designer. The first generation looked so much better.
