I'm viewing from Aurora Ontario. This is my first year growing a Twist and Shout variety hydrangea. I've noticed two 1 1/2" spots of smooth white stem on my plant and hopeful it's not a sign disease and is the result of a late spring frost we had in May.
Greetings from Chicago. Happy to see this great video from my home Garden State. Two years ago, I over pruned and got zero blooms. Last winter I stared at the ugly skeletons all season, but was rewarded with super growth, fullness, and more blooms. I am hoping to find a middle ground this year. I want the "endless" blooms that the name promises, but have a hard time looking at the sad leaves all winter.
Hey Mary. Thanks for checking in from Chicago 🌍👋. I feel your hydrangea pain. I don't like looking at the dormant skeletons either but i turn my head since i just adore the blooms in summer.🌺
@@KellyLehman Question....in winter/early spring, what to do with the old scraggly brown dead leaves on the skeleton branches? Do I trim the off to "clean it up" - or should l leave them? Thanks from Minnesota!

I’m in Virginia Beach, VA and I never knew why my flowers never bloomed. After watching your video, I found out why. I was trimming the whole flower almost. THANK YOU for sharing your wisdom!!!!
Hey Ocean Pebbles, thanks for checking in from Virginia Beach, VA 👋🌍. So happy this helped ! I used to do the same thing to my hydrangeas before I stumbled across the trick of not cutting them back every year . If it find the blooms start to look smaller and the stems are not as sturdy after a few years of not pruning , I’ll give them an early winter pruning just to recharge them. And then I leave them alone again and let them do their thing . Happy gardening . 😊🌸
I'm guilty of doing the same thing and over trimmed since planting about 10 years ago and wondered why no blooms ever appeared - I'm glad to hear I wasn't alone (from Ontario, Canada here)
We’ve always loved hydrangeas but for some reason never had one. My wife got her first for Mother’s Day this year from our kids. She’s a beauty…..and the flower is really pretty too. There’s so much to learn about caring for it, your videos are the most informative and clearest I’ve found. Now living the dream in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Oh wow . Loved your kind comment . Thanks for letting me know you found it helpful . It took me a long time to find good videos on this topic too. So happy you found my channel . Welcome to our Flower Tribe 👋😊🌸
I’ve been cutting them back to the ground every autumn for the last 10+ years. No wonder I was only getting one or two blooms a year. No more pruning for me! Thank you so much!!
Thank you for your intelligent description for pruning or not pruning. I wish my dad would listen to this b/c he just cut all the wood off down to the leaves. :(
Thanks, Kelly, for the clearest explanation I've seen thus far. What was most helpful was your statement that one doesn't have to prune at all, but just "tidy up." New Orleans
I love that you jump right into it! Thank you! I live in Flower Mound, TX, a suburb of Dallas. I started growing hydrangeas 4 years ago, I have several endless summer, but also a big oak leaf group, and several limelight’s. Through trial & lots of errors, I’ve finally just stopped pruning them. They’ve done much better, and I’m finally feeling like a real gardener! Thanks for your channel . I’m now a subscribers. ☺️

No one has talked about that beauty of a garden she has. You can see all That lush evergreens in the background. It’s a dream many of us can only dreamed of. Of course I came for the hydrangeas. I bought a small plant from lowes but I’m trying to get it to grow big and fast.
THANK YOU!!! 🎉😂 I did too much with mine last year and had no blooms 😮😢 Then I decided to just leave them alone and it sounds like you just confirmed it. Appreciate it!! -Franklin, TN
I'm so happy to find this video that gives such a clear description of how to care for my Hydrangeas! I'm from the suburbs around Philadelphia. My husband cut my Hydrangeas down to the ground a year ago and we had no flowers last year! Maybe this year we will but I told him "LEAVE THEM ALONE"!
Hi Rose 👋. Yes, I've pruned my hydrangeas down to the ground too and then could not figure out where the hydrangea blooms were that year too before i learned about them . So happy this helped . Thank you for your kind comment flower friend 🌸😊
When you cut your flowers, dip in Alum, the seasoning and let sit for about 5 minutes and let the alum set, then place in cool water and they will stay beautiful and not wilt ! Love your show, just found it tonight ! 🥰 coming from Cleveland Ohio 😍! I have 10 of them in my back yard and they are beautiful right now ! 😇 thanks !❤️🩹
I live in NM & don’t see many of these growing here. When i travel i see them & love love love. I just purchased 3 plants & will keep them indoors & hope they last.
Hi Kelly! I'm in North of Montréal, Qc. From your video, I'm pretty sure I have those big round and white Anabelles! They started blooming early in the summer and right now they are huge big white balls! :-)...turning a bit on the greenish side. When you say pruning very little because of the "old wood" do I cut those big flowers when it's late fall? (You call this dead head them). OR I don't touch anything at all and let nature do all the work in the spring even though many leaves will have died... 🤔 It's such a delicate and complicated science. Thank you. for your help. Mario💚🤍
I am absolutely thrilled with this video! I've learned more about my favorite flower and its growth here than anywhere else. I think I finally understand old and new wood and am anxious to start treating my hydrangeas better. Thanks so much!
I’ve also learned to have my ph soil tested. Also I dilute food color to which ever color hydrangea I have to get deeper color. Like blue for blue, etc. Just pour the solution at the roots. Water them really good first, then saturate them really good so that the solution gets to the roots. I do this twice a year. It really works. Have your ph soil tested for sure. That will tell what nutrients your soil needs.
What an incredibly helpful video! I am starting my foray into hydrangeas this year. I purchase 3 plants from a local nursery and am hopeful to create a beautiful area in our backyard from them!
Hi Kelly. I'm a gardener running a small but inspired maintenance business in Melbourne, Australia. I've had this 'wrangle' with a few customers at times over how much to cut back the Hydrangeas. You are totally correct. I love watching UA-cams that validate approaches that I've adopted despite rampant alternative views...I had a beautiful 40 year old Hydrangea of the variety you're discussing at my last home & explored optimal pruning over a few years but pretty much worked out that I did not want to cut back very much off the top due to those 'old wood' flowers...Awesome work!
Hi Michael , so fun to read your comment and realize that I have experienced the same conversations with other gardeners here on the other side of the globe. Happy to know this technique works well for you too. I know some people get a little ouchy when I recommend trying a season without the hydrangea pruning . Different techniques work in different gardens . Sounds like our hydrangeas both do best by avoiding too many haircuts . 😊😎
@@KellyLehman My pleasure. Wishing you every success. I've been fence sitting for years on doing something on youtube a little like what you've put up here on a few areas of great results that I've worked to understand on the job...So not only have you put great information on Hydrangeas but also provided some inspiration & kept youtube awesome...
Thank you Kelly, I have been looking at how to prune hydrangeas on quite a few websites but I think your explanation was the best. I had no idea that you still should not prune the old wood on Endless Summer Hydrangeas. I somehow got the impression that I could cut all as much as I would like. But your explanations makes sense. Thank you. Kind regards from Australia.
Thank you for the overload of information. I am going to start as soon as they lift the stay at home order for our state. Can’t wait to start planting!
So excited to hear that . That’s sounds like a great plan . I’m sure you will love having these hydrangeas in your garden. They really being so much joy and peace . Thank you for your kind comment 😀🌼
Thank you so much, I wish I watch earlier. I already cut my Hydrangeas down to the ground last fall. I expected more flowers for this spring. At least I learned my lesson. I hope next year I will have.
Hey Emine, Well the good news is that you gave them a “recharge” by cutting them down. This means more energy will be put into the root and leaf systems since the hydrangea is not worried about creating and sustaining hydrangea flowers on the old wood stems you pruned back . Even better news is that if this was an Endless Summer Hydrangea, you should get the second set of hydrangea flowers that come in on new growth at the end of summer . So it’s all good . This may also translate in to better flowers next year. I actually give my hydrangeas a recharge pruning every 5-6 years if I see they are not producing as many hydrangea flowers as they used to .
Hi! Loris, SC here! What a great video this was! Very helpful. I'll be checking in more often. I love Hydrangeas! The dark blue is my favorite! Happy Planting!

Hoping you get beautiful blooms this year. I like to prune mine back every few years but love the huge influx of flowers on the years I don’t do a heavy pruning . Stay well . 🌸😊
@@KellyLehman So if I just leave my Hydrangeas alone now will they Bloom again? I haven't seen a bloom in 3 years. My fault because I would always prone it down to the ground.
Wait till spring to dead head the old flowers and cut them back to the new buds. Never cut them bck to the ground as you will not see any flowers for 2 or 3 years.
Those are beautiful. I have been wanting those for years. I'm going to buy some from a nursery. I live in the Atlanta area and there are some gorgeous ones around here.
Hi Sandy, Here is a free download that has my four favorite flowers to grow in your garden... happy gardening 🌸💃😊 mailchi.mp/cranburyfields.com/4-musthaveflowers
Thank you, Kelly! We've started tending our yard and we have two hydrangeas. One is huge and the other looks like it's struggling to live every year. Hopefully this will be the year. I'm thinking of filling up the beds in front of the house with hydrangeas and move my flowers. They'll have full sun now that we removed 13 pine trees. Now we'll not argue about their care. We're in Fayetteville, NC
Hi Shelly , sure thing . Happy to help spread the garden love. I love the idea of having hydrangeas in the front of your house . I’ve seen pictures of mansions in the Hamptons of Long Island that had giant hedges of hydrangeas as their focal point surrounding the front out line of the house . They were breathtaking ! 😊 Having lots of sun is great too. If there are areas that get morning sun and afternoon shade , that’s even better for hydrangea varieties like endless summer and annabelle. Consider adding a few Limelight Hydrangea too . They live full sun and are ridiculously gorgeous and low maintenance. Happy gardening 😊🌸
Wow sooo glad this grandpa found this. Great info and have a 2 yr old hydrangea and glad I heard your advice. Will work out great cause i didnt prune it. Thanks for your info and keep doing what your doing. Your beauty is just as nice as your flowers.
Kelly, you are amazing! I've been looking for a video like this and have subscribed to you! I have a "dwarf limelight hydrangea" that is to get 3 - 5 feet tall, I've had them (6 of them) for two summers total. They bloom beautifully (lots of flowers) and I haven't touched them from a pruning perspective until this Spring (so nervous to do it), but felt I had to. I watched 500 (ok, that's an exaggeration, but it felt like it) videos on how to do this, but none addressed dwarf limelight specifically and the reason I felt I had to prune this Spring is because those beautiful flowers were so heavy, my bushes were splitting in the center and the branches all bending towards the ground and flowers were practically in the mulch. I planted these limelights in the back believing they would be taller than the rose bushes I have in the next layer and lilies in the front layer. What can I do to get them five feet tall and still blooming versus splitting and lying on the ground?? THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE! I will be looking up your links as well! xo
Hi Laurie , thank you for your kind comments . SInce Limelight hydrangea and little lime hydrangea both come in on new growth , you should be able to prune back 1/3 of the plant in late winter - early spring to keep the plant in check and cleaned up . I love these hydrangeas . I'll bet yours are gorgeous . 🌸👋😊
Great video Kelly! Beautiful hydrangeas. I love love that color. I had some hydrangeas once and they didn't bloom hardly at all. Now I understand a bit more. Thank you for the tips :) Looking forward to watching more videos.

I think that the community gardens you are remembering have come back into popularity especially in many cities. I see them here in the suburbs too. Such a wonderful idea to grow things with others and share the work and knowledge together. Did you belong to a community garden?🌺🙂
I hired a gardener few years ago. I thought by hiring one would make my lawn and garden beautiful......boy was I wrong. My hydrangeas didn’t bloom at all. I fired him. I’m still so sad and mad but lesson learned .
This is the most informative best information so far ,now I know why my hydrangeas weren’t doing well after I even made sure they had good soil .Thankyou so much from New Zealand .

Just found your UA-cam channel. I have only had 1 bloom per summer on my 2 hydrangea plants, but they look absolutely beautiful and healthy. Your explanations about nitrogen in soil as well as pruning has helped me understand what I might be doing wrong. Thank you and your flowers are amazing.
Hi Kelly, I have a few hydrangea bushes., 3 new last year seam to be growing fine, but 2 years ago. I bought a couple and cut them down in the fall and never did they grow or do anything , so this year I was going to get rid of them but I saw a tiny bit of green coming in so I just left them, don’t know why 2 years later they are just coming alive. But any help from you would be appreciated, I live in alliston Ontario Canada just a little north of Toronto, I am in zone 5,,, thankyou looking forward to more, ohhhh do endless summer survive in hot summer sun as I bought my daughter one.in may but there is no shade in her yard, also how do you get a nice full hydrangea hedge of different colours...thanks again
My hydrangea. A true blue . 2 blooms nor well. Tken good care of . Placed in large container and moved due to extreme heat, and hours . Now here in mid hot humid July I've gotten what started looking g like a light then turned pink to cream and ANTIQUE mauve in very short order (2 weeks) . I see 2 more tiny blooms . How can I help them ? What are they needing . The plant has remained small rich deep green lea es . No loss there. It's s beautiful . Stil gets mor ing till 2pm less straining sun. Same with my Lilacs. I've not seen them oom yet .they are coming on. I just don't want them to die before they bloom !
Woodside, New York. Bought some hydrangea today and wanted to check out how to plant and accidentally came in your channel. It was destiny. Absolutely loved your video. Gonna check out rest of your videos now. Very informative.
Thank you so much! Welcome to our Flower Tribe. I'll bet you love your new hydrangea . I am going to post a video on planting tips soon . I'll bet yours is already in the ground and established by now 😊 Give it a year or two to give you blooms . Sometimes they need a little time to produce the big harvest of flowers 🌸😊
Ahhh I totally agree . So worth the wait . Now as for the deer..... try leaving shavings if Irish Spring soap around then base of the plant near the drip line or cayenne pepper 🌸
Hi Big Tone Malone, the hydrangeas in this video are over ten years old . They take a while to get established . I think by year 6 or 7 they were pretty large . So happy for you that have them to enjoy. 👏🌍

Kelly Lehman OMG!! I love love your hydrangeas. Thank you so much for all the info you are giving us on how to care for them. They’re beautiful. 😍 I just found out about your videos a couple weeks ago. I also started to follow you on Instagram. I’m watching your wonderful videos from Los Angeles, CA. I have a couple of hydrangeas that I planted two years ago they had beautiful flowers when I bought them. But this year they haven’t flower at all, even though I’ve been watering them everyday during summer because it gets hot in LA, between 80’s 90’s. I fertilize them about 6 times this year. I didn’t prune them last year, to see if they will bloom, but they haven’t bloomed. Although they look very lush. I wonder what I’m doing wrong ? Thank you Isabel
@@isabelumana5035 Hi Isabel! So glad you are part of our Flower Tribe . Happy you found us. Well if you saw the video above and think your hydrangeas were pruned properly, it has enough sun, and is being watered, then here is what I think.... It sounds like you have a super healthy plant that is a little too happy to bloom. Here is what may be happening . The Fertilizer you use may have too much nitrogen. Nitrogen encourages big healthy green leaves but phosphorous is the element that encourages bloom production .Most fertilizers have the formula NPK listed on the bag in a three number format like 10-10-10 The N stands for Nitrogen which promotes lush leaves ( foliage growth) The P stands for phosphate which encourages flower production and root growth The K stands for Potassium which promotes the overall health of the plant and builds up disease resistance . To give your hydrangeas a some help in producing better blooms, try using a granular slow release formula with a higher percentage of phosphorus which is your middle number on the label. Miracle grow has a Bloom booster flower food with a formula of 10-52-10. That means there is a 10% concentration of Nitrogen, a 52% concentration of phosphate and a 10% concentration of potassium . Since the middle number (phosphate) is higher, you should get more blooms . Here is a link to amazon for this ➡️ amzn.to/2piWZRH A single application of fertilizer in spring or early summer is all you need . I would do this once and then leave them be . I stay away from fertilizers if my hydrangeas are already looking good. Over fertilizing is often a bloom inhibiter. It's also a good idea to get your soil tested once every few years . Here is a list of places that may be available for you in your state to send in a soil sample and have your soil tested. Most of these places will also give you recommendations of what you will need to improve your soil so you can grow stronger plants. gardeningproductsreview.com/state-by-state-list-soil-testing-labs-cooperative-extension-offices/ In most cases, you go online and follow the instructions on sending in a soli sample and answer a few questions regarding what you are growing, sunlight and water this land receives . Also, hydrangeas do love water especially with hot temps like you have but there is such a thing as over watering. Sometimes overwatering can inhibit bloom production. Maybe cut back the watering a bit to see what happens . Thanks for your great question! See you in the next video! 🌺🌺🌺
Since you seem to be an expert on Hydrangeas, maybe you can tell me why the Hydrangeas on Faial “Blue Island” are scented but none of the Hydrangeas in the United States, that I know of are.
I had never heard of this island before you comment so i had to check it out myself on the internet . Wow!!!! What an amazing place . The hydrangeas blooms are incredible!!!! I didn't come across information on the scent but did read some reasons why they bloom prolifically here and have such an intense blue color . It seems like there was a volcanic eruption years ago and the soil is now packed with nutrients that these hydrangeas thrive on . Here is what i found ........ New additions of water, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen chloride from the eruption made the land extremely fertile and acidic - the perfect breeding ground for the hydrangea. The source i found this on is www.travelandleisure.com/trip-ideas/summer-vacations/faial-blue-island-hydrangeas-bloom-the-azores . Thank you so much for sharing this treasure of an island with our Flower Tribe 👏👋🌍🙂

Hey @CatBird . Thank you for your kind comment. You made my day 😊🌸
I agree! She helped me out TREMENDOUSLY because I have just planted Endless Summer for the first time this year. THANKS!!!!
Thank you for your intelligent description for pruning or not pruning. I wish my dad would listen to this b/c he just cut all the wood off down to the leaves. :(
So happy you are in the hydrangea know now 😊💃

I absolutely love Hydrangeas. So beautiful! Thanks for the great pruning tips.
You are so welcome!🌸😊

You can see all
That lush evergreens in the background. It’s a dream many of us can only dreamed of. Of course I came for the hydrangeas. I bought a small plant from lowes but I’m trying to get it to grow big and fast.
I think I finally understand!! Thank you so much!
Yay Theresa 👏👏 Happy to read this . Thanks for the kind comment 🌸
I followed your propagation suggestions and now have a whole range of rooted hydrangea cuttings. My grateful thanks Kelly.
THANK YOU!!! 🎉😂 I did too much with mine last year and had no blooms 😮😢 Then I decided to just leave them alone and it sounds like you just confirmed it. Appreciate it!! -Franklin, TN
Hi Kelley, yep , you have a good new strategy . Leave em be and let them do their thing . Thanks for checking in from Franklin TN 🌸👋👏🌎😊
Thank you for checking in from the suburbs of Philadelphia 🌸😊
I grow the endless series
Next year they’ll be great
I don't know what type are in my yard but I always thought you had to prune any plant after its flowers fade. Now I won't touch mine either 🙋♂️
Finally! Now I know why my Endless Summer have only been blooming late summer. Thank you thank you!
Hi HarrisonD👋😊. Your comment just made my night ! Thank you for sending it in . So glad to hear this hydrangea tip helped 👏👏🌸
That’s odd, mine literally is the first plant to flower and the last to stop flowering ergo, the name - Endless Summer...
Thanks for talking about the old fashioned hydrangeas.
Sure thing . Thank you for your kind comment flower friend . 😊

When you cut your flowers, dip in Alum, the seasoning and let sit for about 5 minutes and let the alum set, then place in cool water and they will stay beautiful and not wilt !
Well I’m so thrilled with your kind comment JoDee. You just made my day . Welcome to our Flower Tribe 🌸☺️
Dilute the food color with water.
What an incredibly helpful video! I am starting my foray into hydrangeas this year. I purchase 3 plants from a local nursery and am hopeful to create a beautiful area in our backyard from them!
So glad the video was helpful !! Wishing you a beautiful blooms this summer 🌸🌸🌸
What a perfect, simple, clear explanation! Many thanks Kelly!

Thank you for checking in from Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺 👋👏😊👍
Hi Maria. Thank you for checking in from Australia 👋🌍So happy to read your kind comment. You made my day .🙂
Thank you for the overload of information. I am going to start as soon as they lift the stay at home order for our state. Can’t wait to start planting!

Very helpful! I love hydrangeas! Planted 3 new ones last year because we built a home and it needed color. Looking forward to the blooms this summer!
So glad you found it helpful ! Looking forward to some summer blooms too. 🌸😊
@@KellyLehman thanks for info and guidance💐

So if I just leave my Hydrangeas alone now will they Bloom again? I haven't seen a bloom in 3 years. My fault because I would always prone it down to the ground.
Wait till spring to dead head the old flowers and cut them back to the new buds. Never cut them bck to the ground as you will not see any flowers for 2 or 3 years.
Warrenton, VA here .. I did the same thing last year. It's back and looking very promising to bloom this year.
Those are beautiful. I have been wanting those for years. I'm going to buy some from a nursery. I live in the Atlanta area and there are some gorgeous ones around here.
Hi Steve, so happy to hear that . You will love these. Once they are established they are super easy to maintain.

I will be looking up your links as well! xo

Hard to resist cutting back old wood when it looks so bad. Held off last year and rewarded this year. Now if the deer would leave them alone!

Would this work for bunnies too ? The Irish spring soap tip ....

Thank you
Isabel
@@isabelumana5035 Hi Isabel! So glad you are part of our Flower Tribe . Happy you found us. Well if you saw the video above and think your hydrangeas were pruned properly, it has enough sun, and is being watered, then here is what I think....
It sounds like you have a super healthy plant that is a little too happy to bloom. Here is what may be happening . The Fertilizer you use may have too much nitrogen. Nitrogen encourages big healthy green leaves but phosphorous is the element that encourages bloom production .Most fertilizers have the formula NPK listed on the bag in a three number format like 10-10-10
The N stands for Nitrogen which promotes lush leaves ( foliage growth)
The P stands for phosphate which encourages flower production and root growth
The K stands for Potassium which promotes the overall health of the plant and builds up disease resistance .
Here is a link to amazon for this ➡️ amzn.to/2piWZRH
A single application of fertilizer in spring or early summer is all you need .
Most of these places will also give you recommendations of what you will need to improve your soil so you can grow stronger plants. gardeningproductsreview.com/state-by-state-list-soil-testing-labs-cooperative-extension-offices/
In most cases, you go online and follow the instructions on sending in a soli sample and answer a few questions regarding what you are growing, sunlight and water this land receives .
Also, hydrangeas do love water especially with hot temps like you have but there is such a thing as over watering. Sometimes overwatering can inhibit bloom production. Maybe cut back the watering a bit to see what happens . Thanks for your great question! See you in the next video!

Since you seem to be an expert on Hydrangeas,
maybe you can tell me why the Hydrangeas on Faial “Blue Island”
are scented but none of the Hydrangeas in the United States,
that I know of are.
Love my hydrangeas. They are gorgeous this summer. Thanks for this info. Very helpful for me. 😊
So glad to hear the video was helpful 😊 Wishing you continued beautiful blooms 🌸👍💐☀️
I just discovered your channel and I love it. I am a kind of maniac of hydrangeas, I have so many in my garden and all over the years I am getting better at growing it more beautiful every year following so many tutorials on line. Since here in Canada (Quebec) we have so long and rude winters, it is my paradise to be surrounded by beautiful flowers all summer long since it is so short. But looking at your tutorials, I've learned so many other things to make it even better in the years to come. Thank you very much!
