    Thank you SO much for referring to a season instead of a month. I get frustrated at gardeners on here saying things like "What to plant in July" when this is the coldest month in the southern hemisphere.
    So, "late winter" was very helpful. Thank you

    I have to add.... I took a trip to the U.K. two years ago... oh what beautiful flowers you all have there! You are so lucky you do not have to deal with the

    Hi Lee. In Southern Ontario, here in Canada, I always pruned hydrangeas just before winter set in. Usually October/November. No new growth ever appears here until about April of the next year. We have a lot of the really old "snow ball" variety. I trimmed them back by about 1/3 to 1/2 and the result was never disappointing. Very different climates, yours and mine! Your videos are always very informative and I really enjoy them. Barry is adorable, and you have beautiful teeth! Hugs, Jay

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  4 роки тому +2

      Hey Jay! Thanks for the comment. My teeth are all my own haha. Plants like Hydrangeas are super tough. Obviously in insanely cold places like Ontario you will need to wait a bit before pruning them but in warmer climates late winter is when I prune mine. They always then put on a good show! Barry’s doing fine. Just need to teach him how to dig up weeds now!! Haha happy gardening!

    Thanks for YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS I have a couple of these hydrangeas , one blooms two flowers the other NONE at all . Thanks to you I see what my problem is , 1st they’ve only grown approximately 21/2 ‘ tall and I’ve done no thinning of these bushes, so they are tightly packed ( no room for air ) it’s the end of October here in Detroit so I’ll wait until spring to open up the plants and with your tips they should start to grow taller and bloom ( like others I see in my neighborhood ) also one tip that you deli not cover ( from what I’ve read ) coffee grinds help the plants maintain there original purple or pink colors instead of turning white ( mine have retained there purple hue , the few that I do manage to have bloom )

      Hi Bruce. I’m so glad the video guides proved helpful. Pruning and mulching are your two best friends when it comes to shrubs. I’m not sure coffee grinds would make that much difference really but it’s an organic mulch either way. So give it a whirl and let me know how you get on. Happy Gardening! Lee

    In Canada in zone 3 I think our hydrangeas look like this at the end of April or beginning of May! I pruned my hydrangeas down like this in mid April, removing about 1/3 of overall size when I saw the leaf buds nearly breaking. The buds have not broken yet. I hope I did the right thing.

    Hi Lee, I pruned my lace cap and mop head (both in pots) in February, they were looking very promising until we had some very severe frosts recently here in the Cotswolds Worcestershire, the lovely new growth looks extremely frost damaged mid to top end, any chance it will sprout new growth from these damaged bud areas if I cover it with fleece until the last of the frosts for our area have finished, I know it's a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted but I can but hope LOL, there are new buds sprouting toward the base of both plants so covering with fleece would at least protect those. Thanks for all your useful tips, it's great to watch someone with your knowledge who doesn't over complicate how to get the best from the garden.

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Deborah. Frost can be a pain with all shrubs and can damage flowers. Yes defo fleece them to protect the other buds. You’d be surprised at how resilient they are. So don’t give up hope! So glad you’re enjoying my guides. Happy gardening. Lee 🥷🌿

    Ohh dear I got carried away yesterday afternoon in the garden & pruned the hydrangeas, they were all brown & discoloured & finished flowering also the new buds & leaves have appeared. They weren’t trimmed at all last year & so were very overgrown and not a great shape - so it appears I’ve done it super early - are they going to survive?? Thank you for such an informative & easy to understand video - also the dog is super cute! Just wish I checked yesterday before insanity took over🤦‍♀

    Many thanks for this. Really helpful. I wrongly thought you had to cut most of the branches back to the same sort of height from the ground but you obviously left quite a few tall ones while also expecting new shoots right from the base. Can you say anything about that - will the shrub still even up nicely evenly shaped? Many thanks.

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  2 роки тому

      Hi Paul, Apologies for the delay! Yes new shoots will emerge after a harder prune. The key to pruning is being uniform and balanced. I'm sure your Hydrangeas already bounced back! Happy pruning. Lee

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much!! Give it a good chop now. If it’s spindly maybe take it back even by half. That will set it up for success next year. Probably lose some flowers this year but better to get it back to shape though. Happy pruning! Lee 🥷🌿
