Immediately thought of "Dr. No" when I saw the thumbnail. If I ever decide to become a supervillain, I'm getting one.
Yes and you would have to wear Eucris cologne. 😉
Perfect.
Finally, videos on others collars. Do Mao collar and gakuran collar and such
It reminds me of the trachen jackets off the Alpen region, especially the collar. Although those are more in the traditional formal hunthing outdoor style.
TrachTen. 🙂
@@tubekulose indeed dear Sir 😄
Ash, this is a flash back to the past for me back to the 1960 for my one and only Nehru jacket. I think my interest came more from the Man From Uncle TV program than the musical band influence.
I’m actually looking at an Armani neru jacket now. Was going to buy & try it out.
As a pastor I have a Nehru suit that I wear with my cleric collar when officiating weddings.
You've covered the barbour, teba, sportscoat, blazer, neru.
Could you cover the Norfolk jacket please ;)
And when we seeing your Sportsjacket collection
Rajiv Gandhi wore it with reagen, one of the most charismatic prime ministers and it's something I wear on a regular basis. Not only jacket but also nehru kurta, and khadi garments with similar styles. Indian ethnic wear comprises of lot of similar ideas. Narendra Modi wears it all the time to make a subtle difference compared to other world leaders.
It's good to hear you say "body warmer" when these days it's all vests and gilets :D
I like the look of Nehru jackets, didn’t know that was the name of it. I don’t care to try to pull it off myself.
The jacket has a long history of connection with 1960s science fiction (UFO series, Star Trek dress uniforms) because the writers perceived the Nehru jacket as an evolution from basic suits that made more sense in the modern world. Also note resemblance to US Navy Service Dress White for officers. I have several mandarin collar dress shirts. They are distinctive but not really out there to get too much attention. Banded collar shirts are a variation except the collar stays flat.
I tried to post images of examples, but not allowed.
Ah yes, I believe Ed Straker wore one in UFO? A really cool insight :)
@@joshmiller7777 The two male colonels that worked for Straker also wore them, but in less formal colors and unbuttoned in the style seen in 2024 in the video.
We never got to see the other colonel, Bernard C’s Mom, in a Nehru for some reason.
@@michaelblazin4093 Ah you know the show well, that's impressive! A bit of a classic :)
Reminds me of those Hong Kong kung fu movies i loved to watch as a kid in mid 70s....
For sure the wool/tweed Nehru jacket it is more suited for the western world. I personally dont think i will wear one any time soon. What it is missing from my wardrobe is a nice barbour jacket.
Thank you again Mr. Ash for your work. Cheers!
I am glad that John brought up that question and Ash covered it. It is quite a versatile garment with full sleeve and half sleeve versions with various cloth options.
An old money style but also a bang on fashion trend coming, Oasis,Beatles vibes cool majestic fashion vibe. 👍😊
I have a couple of them but for me they are austrian jackets. Very typical for country side and hunting. Specially when they come in ‘Loden’ fabric.
Easy to combine with chinos and even Jeans.
I didn’t wear them very often but with video you watered my mouth and I will take it for a wedding in the french country side next Saturday
Dr. No, Blofeld, Kamal Khan, Elliot Carver, etc. ...
It is a great style!
Looks like Japanese high school and ww 1 & 2 navy officer uniforms
I live in the east (North Essex) and we don’t see them that often. However, I do rather like them!
Wearing one could - potentially - be Groovy!
The Nehru style in a polo setting may be a nod to the roots of the game being Persian. Quite fitting, really.
Excellent discussion of the history of the Nehru jacket, Ash, although I think this is a bridge too far for me, personally. -I'd feel like I was cosplaying a late 1960s pop star.
But kudos to this guy for having the courage to pull it off.
Bring back Leisure suits!
Very interesting I think i would go smart casual
As an older man we remember it as a Beatle jacket or collar. These days probably a person of Asian ethnic background would be more likely seen in this style
Well thought-out discussion, Ash. One of the first coats I made as an apprentice was a Nero in the style of the Beatles with a velvet collar, ended up giving it to a girlfriend. Yes, quite agree the tweed Nero Gillet/Vest is a classic and still very stylish.
A Nehru jacket will suit you very well Ash...
Oy...I wish I still had mine!
Really like the tweed body warmer.
I have a suit with a Nehru jacket. My problem was always selecting a shirt to wear with it.
I remember Frank Sinatra in the late 60s wore a white Nehru jacket
Campbell's of Beauly do a few nice Tweed Nehru Gilet's as you showed Ash. I'm not sure whether I'm a fan of Nehru jackets (for me to wear personally) but I have seen them look great on others. I'm very slowly warming to the Tweed Nehru Gilet's.
I've considered the Neruu Jacket many times but eventually always ended up deciding against it.
Maybe it's my aversion against anything that could be *constructed* as cultural apropriation (heck I don't even wear my beautiful "trachten" - German, spacifically southern traditional clothing - waistcoat often... too Bavarian for me... and it's also part of my native Hessian Tracht...) but I feel it's more my preferance for neckwear - essentially the same problem that also limits wearing my Tracht waistcoat - if it's closing to high I feel limited and lacking an coordinated element in my assesories. 😂
So it's vanity masking as alleged cultural sensivity🙄...
Maybe I should try it... thanks for this little feature bringing this again to mind.
Best regards
Raoul G. Kunz
Polo in Peckham. Now there’s a mismatch 😂
I would buy two nehru jackets and throw them both out. As a former policeman Ash, you know the importance of "making a collar." (Hopefully the American slang is understood by those wonderful people who gave us our language.)
I have a black wool Nehru vest. It looks great with a shirt with a Nehru/Mandarin collar or a banded collar. Very sharp. I would not wear a regular collar or a tie.
In the early seventies I would sometimes wear a Neuru jacket suit with a dickie collar. I loved the look but even in the early seventies I was a bit out of place. :)
I think that the army dress uniform jacket is similar to Nehru jacket...
Let us expand our consideration of the Nehru jacket, being that we are both military men. Would not the Nehru transition fabulously to a military uniform? Oh yes! The Lives of a Bengal Lancer….. a better, more formal era.
Interesting stuff.
I'll admit I've considered adding such a garment to my wardrobe. But, upon further review, I decided its not for me.
A few reasons. The Nehru jacket is, in any western country, a bit of an eccentric choice. I don't mind stepping a few paces out of the norm, but a Nehru jacket is a bit beyond my comfort zone. Secondly, I simply don't have personal connection with India or South Asia. If my parents or grandparents came from there, or even if I'd spent a long time living and working there - then maybe. But for a chap like me it feels a bit like cultural appropriation. And I say this as a chap who's in the process of expanding my curry repertoire to include more traditional versions than the tikka masala and baltis one gets in most UK restaurants.
And then there's the Bond Villain thing. I've long since lost track of the Bond villains that sported the Nehru jacket. I aspire to be many things in my life. Bond villain not one of them.
The Beatles and Monkees wore them? Noy a very compelling reason. They wore and awful lot of goofy duds back in the 1960s, and I'm not sure how many are due for a comeback.
The tweed gilet with a mandarin collar? I think that's so far from what we'd call a true Nehru jacket as to exist in its own space. I think I've got something pretty similar, and I certainly wouldn't call it a Nehru jacket. Just something to wear in the country when its getting a little chilly.
Hare Krishna, mon ami!
some army and police wear jacket with that colar as dress uniform in italy and greece ,
I almost had a Nehru made when I was in the Army all those years ago.
Nothing new here Ash
I got mine yonks ago as Paul McCartney inspired me
When you want to look stylish and also like Kim Jong Un
Which brand of chore jacket are you wearing Ash? Looks great!
John Lewis Any Days Utility Jacket (£45)
You're doing for the Nehru, what you did for the Teba last year.
That’s the plan.
If you google pictures of a German/Austrian JANKER you will come up with something very similar.
German pronunciation would be "yanker' which adds a rather different aspect.
I got married in a Nehru jacket suit
The actual origin is the British army tunic
I actually like it a lot but I don't think I'd ever wear them; too stylized for me.
Pocket squares do NOT go with Nehru jackets!
waiting for the donkey jacket
What is this. Never heard of it. Perhaps Darth Vader wears one.
Benny Hinn look no thanks
