I’m still a teen but I honestly relate to this a lot. I used to want to be a writer but now I want to eventually make comics. I still want to use my old ideas because I still love them and I think they grew with me! This video was super helpful on how I can look at starting projects, thank you! If you can go more in depth about your project tips, that would be awesome!
Start making your comic now. Im 16 now but started when I was 15. And remember making it will improve your art so if your first few pages suck, you can redo them later. And maybe start with your shortest story too so less scary. Try to do at least 2 hours every day and maybe more when u have the time.
this is a really lovely sponsor actually. rare that i actually watch a whole sponsor segment in a video, but you explained it really nicely and it links to your content so well! love this!
Oh, it's Coleslaw! I remember reading it after you did your original video on redrawing one of the pages from it (which I just realized was 4 years ago, wow), and felt a little sad when it went down with Smackjeeves.
Legit if this was a full comic or a TV show or somthing I'd love it, it's so fun seeing how newer artists can have some of the most amazing ideas and with a bit more skill they can be amazing stories.
Redesigning old work is one of my favorite things to do because it feels like a lil gift to the person you were who would be so stoked to see the progress you've made.
Unicorn slaughter! Maybe you were going for "Cole's Law" some saying or belief the MC was holding onto for the whole story. The fact that written out being a food makes it a recurring site gag to MC's chagrin. Booting an angel character into hell and forcing him to buddy up with a local is certainly going to test some personal philosophies. Even with the older still experimenting artstyle, your coloring preferences are still present.
i’m gonna be honest, a few years ago you mentioned this story in a video and me, still in middle school, tracked it down and read it (or what was left of it) i thought it was so cool that you made a comic at an age so close to my own at that the time. reading your old work solidified my path to do art for a living. so even if u cringe now just know that it was life altering for someone (when you re read it at the beginning of the video i did start to realize i had no taste in middle school tho)
It's definitely a fun thing going back to things you wrote a long time ago. I've done that too with characters and stories I created when I was young, and yeah while simple and cringy, I found it a good exercise to try to update my stories with the knowledge I have now and make them more interesting.
the fact you're able to just develop a new art style and stick to it though a whole project is really impressive to me. I always have a problem with my art style changing with every drawing I draw and the same character looking different every time I draw them
I actually read coleslaw! The original! You mentioned the comic in an older video you had made that I watched and I wanted to read the comic. So I had looked it up and found a website thing that had somehow like, saved or recovered some of the comics from the website that got shut down that you said you originally posted the comic on. So I got to read the whole story and I LOVED IT. Sure some things were confusing and stuff, but it was great and I loved the concept and things. When I finished reading everything that was written, I was sad that it was over and felt like it wasn’t really completed/finished and that I was sort of left on a cliffhanger. I would absolutely LOVE if at some point you could actually redo the comic and post it somewhere! You don’t have to of course. I know that you’re probably busy and have other things going on and stuff that you’re working on, so even if you do choose to redo the comic you probably won’t be able to until much later. But I would really love to see it and I bet others would too! Then you can make it even better and do all the things you wish you had done with the original, and even more people will get to experience the story and great concept but in an even better way! It’s such a great concept/idea and had/has great potential, and I would love to see what you could do with it! I bet it would be so amazing and I really would love to see it. So if you can, I would love it if you could at some point maybe try and re-make the comic (if you want to).
Even if you don’t redo it, maybe you could add to the original or something. Since the original didn’t feel totally completed kind of, so you could finish it sort of and continue with the story or something idk. I just would love to see you do more with it because it has a ton of potential and with your current skill you can totally do incredible things with it!
You could also just write it out and not draw it as a web comic or something. If you don’t feel like drawing out the whole thing or anything like that, just writing it out would be cool too!
waittt chat i rlly love this new concept actually lavender pls dont abandon these cuties 🙏🙏(the urge to make my own comic of these two is resl why am i getting attached to literal concepts)
actually drawing seventy pages of a comic as a teen is so awe isnpiring to me, like even now I'm mostly just daydreaming about making comics one day always telling myself I'm not good enough yet in some aspect or I need to do more research, god maybe I'll start planning them with milanote and that will be a step further than just daydreaming haha :"D
As a fellow 2000s deviantart kid, these kinds of videos where you go back and review/redo your old art are my favorite. Its so nostalgic to see all of the design choices and character tropes that were so popular back then.
I don't know if you're planning on doing more for this webcomic, but I personally would love to see more !! I love seeing people reboot their old characters and plots with fresh new ideas, art, worldbuilding, etc :D
ive been writing my own comic VERY inconsistently since seventh grade, (im going into my senior year of highschool). I recently rediscovered my love for drawing as i got on antidepressants, havent really been drawing much since 8th grade but its been and always has been a part of my identity. Anyways as i draw i always imagine it actually being a comic other people can read but that takes a lot of work so i just stuck to paper and pencil, besides i didn’t really understand digital art and i still dont. After watching this video and seeing the planning process it really helped me understand how to plan this idea to make it a reality which i am currently doing. I didn’t realize how hard is to be consistent so i’m planning everything out instead of just adding panels which is what it did before. I just redesigned the characters, and i had so much new ideas but they conflict with others so now i have to sort through everything and i probably actually have to make a plot too 😅 milinotes is definitely a big help tho, its literally what my brain would create if i could create a notes app like it’s actually just perfect i can’t believe its free, and it seems more efficient for me than a planner (i have severe adhd and have trouble organizing my tasks)
Are we living the same life?? We actually have the same timeline! I've literally been doing the exact same thing! I put my 7th grade comic on pause though, since it's a bigger project, and I'm working on smaller comics at the moment. Good luck with your comic process!!
@@carmelsela7430 oh wow thats so cool, i should look into doing smaller comics to practice having a complete plot as thats one of my biggest struggles, last night i redesigned the characters to and im currently making a rough draft of what will hopefully soon be the first episode. Its so interesting with a big project like this watching the improvements
It’s so cool to see an artist’s old work. You can see how much they progressed. Also it’s really neat to see this because I’m a teen working on my own webcomics, and I definitely struggle with getting things sorted out (especially the main storyline/plot). My first webcomic’s premise is basically that ancient robots start to reanimate in a sort of magical post apocalyptic world, and two kids have to stop them! I started it when I was thirteen and finished the first chapter last year. My other webcomic is about a werewolf and a witch who are both fugitives. It centers around them trying to survive and they eventually fall in love (of course lol). I’m currently working on the prologue.
i wasnt on the internet when the original was made, and i think the style and inspirations are so cool to look at! that genuine product of the 2010's is very cool to me and id be interested in reading it
I used SmackJeeves when I was younger! I had a comic called "Vampire Chic" on there, it was awful! Now I am writing a comic which is that comic but better because I guess I never learned my lesson
I would love to see you do a video like this with some of your other old webcomics! Like I remember you saying in an old video that you had another old webcomic called “Salem” and the storyline and concept of that sounded interesting too. If you could possibly find a way to share your old webcomics with us then I would love to read them! although the execution of the stories you made might have not been the best, the ideas and concepts sound super cool and interesting. Your younger self put effort into your old comics and the ideas are amazing. It shows your development as an artist and writer and just as a creator in general. I really would enjoy being able to read your old web-comics, if there is a way that you could possibly share them with us!
I LOVE your new art BUT SOMETHING ABOUT THE OLD ART IS JUST....UGH it speaks to my soul!!! I think the original comic is amazing honestly the biggest issue with it was the backgrounds but it doesnt need to be changed so much(imo) !IS THERE A PLACE WE CAN READ THE ORIGINAL??? ;__;
I really love the video and it’s really inspiring seeing how you created a whole comic as a 15 year old and how far you came from. As somebody who’s 15 turning 16 in a couple of months who’s also trying to create a webcomic. Luv your video and I can’t wait for more especially one about webcomic.
i'm actually in the process of revamping a very old idea for a book of sorts that I had. I'm turning it in for a grade eventually, and milanote makes it seem more polished than the google doc i was originally organizing things on. (for the one-sentence thing: radioactive acid nuclear fallout on hawaii, but some random 12 year olds survived)
This story reminds me a lot of good omens. You were very talented even as a 15 year old! The dialogue and plot was ofc so messy but the art was v fun to look at. Also I love the idea of one single baby deciding the fate of every souls eternity 😂
I love this so much!!! It's so fun to see you walk through and recreate an old webcomic! It's also so inspiring, and it makes me want to do it myself! I'd love to see more of this kind of thing, I think it would be so fun to see more how your process works and work along with you on making a new project!
This webtoon looks like something I`d write if i became 12 again and got silly while writing the first few pages. Edit: this is talking about the og, not the remake.
one of my first comic ideas was a creepypasta fancomic where all the fan favs were in highschool, very much inspired by my love for monster high at the time 😭
I absolutely love this !!! maybe its just because im working on a webcomic as well, but watching this and your process of planning/ remaking a webcomic is so so cool to me. id be so into more content with these boys! maybe even a redraw of a page would be cool
I was 13/14 when I had a comic on flipnote (the dsi app thing) I. don't remember a lot. The main character was a pack leader wolf girl, who was best friends with a vampire princess. There was also the wolf girl's fiancé (arranged marriage situation) who she fell out of love with in order to fall in love with like, the secondary villain lol. And a dragon boy that joined them?? There main villain was named OWL and he was trying to destroy the world for?? reasons?? Anyway, he killed MC's dad so the whole quest was revenge for him 😂 I was more interested in the character relationships than the fantasy world and over all plot. I came up with some cool locations tho. A tree top camp for the revolution to hide out in, inaccessible unless you could fly or had a pact with the spirits of the forest. But the spirits were tricksters, so while the pact gave access to the tree top and the safety of the location, it slowly would infect your body and harm you. Anyway 😂
i really love your designs, you're actually one of my motivations for making good character designs. I struggle with it a lot but seeing yours help me a lot. I am also still changing my character's design bcs when i made them i didn't searched anything abt the cultures i was refering to (i just did a session of reseachs abt middle east culture bcs one of my characters is inspired by it) anyways, i wanted to say that i love your arts and how you design your characters and it inspire me a lot
i absolutely love the concept of this and the characters. i would genuinely love to see you re make this hole story. i kno thatd be a lot of work tho. would it be okay if i did my on redraw of the characters??
Guys, I’m an artist and from experience, this new “Milanote” thing that’s been spreading as a sponsor from artist to artist is AMAZING. It’s SO USEFUL for brainstorming and planning whether you write, draw, even develop games. I’m not trying to yk promote anything but I’m just saying it’s actually so useful for ANYTHING
this is genuinely so sweet. I already thought your childhood art and concepts were so genuine and full of love and enthusiasm and I found the art to be so charming, but seeing your improvement as both an artist and storyteller is so lovely! You were already building off a foundation of a love of art and Making Stuff as a kid, and it shows in the new designs for sure. I'd definitely pick up that Coleslaw cover from the bookshelf while browsing the library!
I love sooo much about this but I have a concern: Vodka (while ultimately a good person) is the more aggressive, physically in charge protagonist while Cole is more shy and fragile seeming… so Vodka is the darker of the two? I get and appreciate the “light skin + dark hair/dark skin + light hair” combo, but I worry about the unintentional connotations. I think you typically do a good job of being cognizant of racial issues as a white creator, but I do think you maybe had a bit of oversight on this one. I don’t have any one particular note on ways to go about this, I feel like there are a variety of options, but the best start would probably be to get feedback from darker skinned artists (as I am white passing). Really hoping you see this so you can at the very least keep this in mind going forward with other designs, as I’ve been a fan for a long time and seeing you grow is so rewarding!
there were only 2 characters in this comic (that got a proper redesign) and only one of them had a really unique light hair colour, it makes a lot more sense to give him the darker skin tone visually & artistically. like i'd get your point if this was a pattern, where all the unruly or aggressive characters she made were of colour / all her poc characters were unruly or aggressive, but you yourself address in your comment how that has never been an issue with her art, so. you're reading way too much into a single instance with very limited characters, there's nothing to suggest that it's not just a coincidence based on the original colour palette
@@tallemajas hey there, I get your point and I understand there are only two proper redesigns + that she’s working off the original hair colors, but I do think it’s extra important to be wary of when they’re the main characters of the story and are meant to be in a relationship, as this is extra prominent in those settings. I’m not trying to say that she should change them, as like I said there are a variety of ways to handle it - I get I could’ve pointed some I was thinking out, beyond “consult darker fans”, and I do think that if it were getting completely redone, variety of other characters would be helpful! I’m sorry if my initial comment came off as condemning anyone, but as Haley has a big following and I don’t recall this pattern with her proper ocs before, I wanted to point it out in hopes she could keep it in mind going forward and make sure it doesn’t Become an unintentional pattern. Sometimes we mean well and fall into subconscious societal patterns, yknow? Anyway, I hope that elaboration made sense and didn’t come off as aggressive, I tend to either accidentally give off aggressive vibes or “talking to 4 year olds” vibes, neither of which are ideal nor intentional
Seeing the process involved here was really helpful and inspirational! I've been working on my own webcomic since high school and recently decided to restart it (because I only planned very basic pieces and mostly focused on the characters' magical girl designs). Thanks so much for the great video as always!
This is so amazing 😭😭💖💖 I used to want to make comics but literally never even made a full page LMAO I am so blown away by all of the work you put in at such a young age, and I love these new concepts and designs!!

NAHH CUZ I WAS THINKING EXACTLY THIS WHYD SHE LOWKEY SLAY THO
I actually really liked this comic originally. The pacing is the only real problem, the characterisation was pretty fun.
I remember when you first redrew a page from this 😭😭 IM HYPED FOR THIS VIDEO
Same lmao
I’m still a teen but I honestly relate to this a lot. I used to want to be a writer but now I want to eventually make comics. I still want to use my old ideas because I still love them and I think they grew with me! This video was super helpful on how I can look at starting projects, thank you! If you can go more in depth about your project tips, that would be awesome!
Same I'm 14 and I have an idea for a comic and this was helpful
Start making your comic now. Im 16 now but started when I was 15. And remember making it will improve your art so if your first few pages suck, you can redo them later. And maybe start with your shortest story too so less scary. Try to do at least 2 hours every day and maybe more when u have the time.
Omg same 😭🙌🙌
this is a really lovely sponsor actually. rare that i actually watch a whole sponsor segment in a video, but you explained it really nicely and it links to your content so well! love this!
thank you so much!
Redesigning old work is one of my favorite things to do because it feels like a lil gift to the person you were who would be so stoked to see the progress you've made.
my theory is: the story ends with cole somehow gains authority, and creates a new law, and it's called cole's law (coleslaw). Roll credits
Even with the older still experimenting artstyle, your coloring preferences are still present.
i’m gonna be honest, a few years ago you mentioned this story in a video and me, still in middle school, tracked it down and read it (or what was left of it) i thought it was so cool that you made a comic at an age so close to my own at that the time. reading your old work solidified my path to do art for a living.
so even if u cringe now just know that it was life altering for someone
(when you re read it at the beginning of the video i did start to realize i had no taste in middle school tho)
I love that your style at 15 was practically fully developed and then you went "time to pivot!" And developed the style you have now. Very admirable!
we need to stop calling mid and late 2000s "dated" bc it still holds up SO MUCH
YES OMG 😭
The updated concept is actually so cool?? I would totally read it if it were real.
The second i saw the thumbnail i remember your old videos about fixing certain panels feom this comic😭😭
your old style is actually so cute i can really see the soul eater vibes in it
I actually love the different fonts showing each character’s style of speaking it’s really unique
even though the story and character design aren’t that good, the art of the original one is actually really impressive 😭
So happy to see you revisit these characters!!
It's definitely a fun thing going back to things you wrote a long time ago. I've done that too with characters and stories I created when I was young, and yeah while simple and cringy, I found it a good exercise to try to update my stories with the knowledge I have now and make them more interesting.
omg this was posted exactly at 3am for me 😭
Same
It was 3 pm for me 😭
Sameeee, philippines?
3pm 4 me
8:01 pm xx
I actually remember reading Coleslaw a while ago and I do not remember the internet l33t speech at all 😭
the fact you're able to just develop a new art style and stick to it though a whole project is really impressive to me.
What are the odds that this comic will actually get a finished rewrite? I would 100% read it! It sounds fun! Very 2010's!
As a fellow 2000s deviantart kid, these kinds of videos where you go back and review/redo your old art are my favorite. Its so nostalgic to see all of the design choices and character tropes that were so popular back then.
I’ve always thought this old webcomic of yours was so cool!! I’m so excited that you’re returning to it!!!!
I loveee these more personal projects/ your personal art videos these are so inspiring
same i hope she does more videos like this!!
I don't know if you're planning on doing more for this webcomic, but I personally would love to see more !! I love seeing people reboot their old characters and plots with fresh new ideas, art, worldbuilding, etc :D
Id honestly love to see this as an actual webcomic
i must say, that original cover art was badass. i love that neon and bright SCREAMING cover, it really drew the eye! beautiful redesign:)
ive been writing my own comic VERY inconsistently since seventh grade, (im going into my senior year of highschool).
0:15 your new animations are so cute!!
the way that there is ZERO question that you were inspired soul eater omg. iconic
I love that most artists have a BL phase
r you talking from experience? /j
What’s BL?
I’m currently working on the prologue.
i wasnt on the internet when the original was made, and i think the style and inspirations are so cool to look at! that genuine product of the 2010's is very cool to me and id be interested in reading it
ngl cole and vodka + that artstyle is so good for no reason,i love how they look in the og and the redesign
I would read the hell out of this comic tbh
Why are they exactly the kind of characters I enjoy 😭 the redesigns are so cute
It’s been a while but oh MY AM I GLAD I’M HERE!
PLEASE. PLEASE PLEASE IM LITERALLY BEGGING YOU TO MAKE THIS A REAL COMIC WHEN YOU HAVE THE TIME 😢😢
Videos about character design and story building>>>>
They are so calming istg
I LOVE your new art BUT SOMETHING ABOUT THE OLD ART IS JUST....UGH it speaks to my soul!!! I think the original comic is amazing honestly the biggest issue with it was the backgrounds but it doesnt need to be changed so much(imo) !IS THERE A PLACE WE CAN READ THE ORIGINAL??? ;__;
I never forget my old stuff, everything gets redesigned and brought back into the fold~!
Man, I really want this comic. LavenderTowne is great at making up stories
WAKE UP GUYS, LAVENDERTOWNE JS POSTED!!! (ily lavendertowne, ur amazing >
The artstyle really gives Souleater and Ghost and Pals and I absolutely love it! :D
I remember you talking about this before!!! I love looking at artist's old work :D
Always loved the video where you redrew a page from your old comic so I'm excited to see another video like that!
I love the dramatic reading lol😭
one of my first comic ideas was a creepypasta fancomic where all the fan favs were in highschool, very much inspired by my love for monster high at the time 😭
u shouldve made it honestly
I am also still changing my character's design bcs when i made them i didn't searched anything abt the cultures i was refering to (i just did a session of reseachs abt middle east culture bcs one of my characters is inspired by it)
anyways, i wanted to say that i love your arts and how you design your characters and it inspire me a lot
i absolutely love the concept of this and the characters. i would genuinely love to see you re make this hole story. i kno thatd be a lot of work tho. would it be okay if i did my on redraw of the characters??
absolutely! :)
Finally. A sponsor segment that is useful to the video.
this is genuinely so sweet.
“Get the bad drawings out” is so real I can’t 😂
Mannnn I would fr love to read this if you were to ever do a remake and post it on webtoons IM ALREADY YOU'RE BIGGEST FAN, TRUST 😭👍❤️
Calling a Russian character "vodka" is like calling a Mexican character "tequila"😔😔 Though..I'm Russian, and I love this, lmao
I love watching your process of design and just watching the drawings come together is super cool!!!
It is not that deep
Seeing the process involved here was really helpful and inspirational! I've been working on my own webcomic since high school and recently decided to restart it (because I only planned very basic pieces and mostly focused on the characters' magical girl designs). Thanks so much for the great video as always!
I put my old artwork locked away
Smart
Real
This is so amazing 😭😭💖💖 I used to want to make comics but literally never even made a full page LMAO I am so blown away by all of the work you put in at such a young age, and I love these new concepts and designs!!
HELP WAS THAT STAN AND KYLE 0:24
this was so inspirational world-building wise!!! it makes me want to really flesh out my own stories deeper, thank you :D
Omg, I have no desire to make a webcomic but I am slowly chipping away at the novel I'm writing but I have a few books I never finished and its because I had no plan either loll. The latest one before my current got to 8 chapters long. 8 chapters of nothing really happening loll. I did learn how to discribe things beautifully tho!
(Whoever is reading this rn is cool and gets good luck!!)
YOU ARE SO COOL!!!!! Your ideas from when you were younger were already super cool and now with how you've grown and with more experience and stuff, this would actually make such a sick webcomic. I would 100% read this. You are such a creative super power! Thank you for sharing your art and creative journeys with the world, you've really helped me grow as an artist :3
Yeah I love when people remake their old art
I honestly love the art in the og! And the writing isn’t nearly as bad as some other webcomics I’ve seen! XD
At first, i was like "oooooo we got some controversy here goin on" but then it was ur own webtoon HAHSHJS
