The Reddit Post That Almost Broke the NBA

There was a gigantic controversy when a Reddit post accused the NBA of being rigged. A fan noticed that Jaren Jackson Jr.’s defensive stats were extremely lopsided at home so he accused the home scorekeeper of being corrupt. The NBA took the allegation so seriously the Commissioner Adam Silver had an emergency meeting 24 hours after the post. This is a look at whether the Reddit user is onto something.
Two things: first, sorry about forgetting Secaucus is in NJ. Second: there’s so much spam/scammers in the comments! Don’t get fooled!

He did a genius move and drew attention to his incredible splits disparity to solidify his DPoY run this season. 4D chess style.
Damn. 🤔

Everyone playing chess, while he’s playing 4d chess
And he also bet money on himself
The Reddit user just handed Jaren the DPOY award
I think JJJ SHOULD win if it was best shot blocker of the year, but it’s defensive player of the year and metrics say it should be Evan Mobley. Unfortunately because he’s a nice quiet kid without a National conspiracy, he probably will be lucky to make the 2nd team.

My local pro sports team used to have the opposite problem, good road record and a lousy home record. It was because the core players had a very bad habit of partying the night before home games but were more accountable for their whereabouts and activities when out on the road.
Adam Silver acted so quick, that’s proof alone the league is rigged.

Yup for LeBron and curry
but the nba is rigged, has been for years. tim donaghy was a scapegoat, you really think he is the one and only one to rig games. in no other professional sport especially in the big 4 do the refs have as much power and control as they do in the nba. two quick ticky tack fouls and you can have your best player on the court sitting in the first quarter. Imagine if tom brady was sitting out with 10 minutes left of the first quarter. refs also control the pacing of the game, sometimes they let them play on, sometimes its little ticky tack, sometimes thats a good no contact, sometimes its you breath on me and its a foul. refs control and dictate wayyyyyy to much of the nba.
Tim Donaghy said when he was a rookie Ref, he called something on Michael Jordan, he said Michael, the refs & Phil Jackson were chastising him. Michael told him “The league doesn’t want you to call those calls on me.”

lol Never heard this but it makes sense for two reasons: Sterling is a notorious racist and is of the tribe that looooooves shekels.
People never talk about the league "points of emphasis" mentioned by Donaghy. The NBA throws games by telling officials to call certain fouls against teams or players on a game by game basis.
He mentions how Allen Iverson carried the ball the whole year and right before a big game they came down on him. Oftentimes points of emphasis would all go against one team to lengthen a playoff series. Remember Golden State and the Cavs in the finals?
Couldn’t of said it any better
That '06 Finals the emphasis was on them damn Wade free throws smh.
Nice hoping someone else understood this point. It’s not as much as games are rigged but manipulated - to help or hinder star players, create story lines, and of course lengthen playoff series. All in the name of money. Not sports it’s sports entertainment.

Charles Barkley shooting like 40 free throws against the Sonics in game 7 of the 93 Western Conference Final.
I’ve always believed the league is corrupt. Scott Foster was literally caught gambling on games he was reffing, yet he still has a job. This JJJ example didn’t turn out to be true and to be fair was farfetched at best, but the overlying issues with the NBA is very suspect.
Then pull together some proof
That's reassuring to know, I just hope the refs situation gets dealt with because the Celtics have a 38-2 record with Eric Lewis as a ref, and given the no call on Lebron, at least an investigation has to happen
The Celtics is more motivated this year after they lost last year. They win some and lose some. They just destroyed the Nets today, but of course without KD. 🤷
I bet you never asked for an investigation to be done for Lebrons whole career or for the 2016 rigged chip the Cavs won huh hypocrite

This is actually a good thing for the NBA and all other leagues. Now that sports betting is legal and small bets on player performance is common, they have to ensure that their monitoring, recording, and auditing of individual stats are legit.
Even if the JJJ stats are legit, there are many other examples that show the league is, in some ways, "rigged".
And it would be against their interest to not do so.
Nba and nfl are rig city baby ! I knew with betting becoming nearly nationwide that the house of cards would fall… these leagues and sports books would turn a huge profit without having to resort to fixing games, but as in everything else money/greed ruins everything… it’s literally the root of evil…

When you're a big market in sports, you get better treatment from the league and refs but one main priority is they always try to protect the owners
I think they do it reverse. Under the leather there is metal wrapped under leather but so small you don't know difference. The rim is actually a electro magnet being able to kick it on with switch when they need a basketball to go in. All someone has to do to find out is to steal NBA game ball. Run like they never ran before , then dissect the ball to prove it's got stuff in ball to make it magnetic. Or wear magnet gloves and say hey let me take a shot. If the ball sticks , we know what's going on. I've seriously been saying this since Jordan was making every shot he took in the 90s. Vegas probably holds the switch that kicks on and off the electro magnetic rim. See those electro magnets can be fine tuned too. Like maybe they don't want a shot to go in. The reverse the magnetism so the ball won't go through rim. Ever seen some one try dunking just to see ball bounce out of rim with force. That's the electro magnet working in reverse. I know this is a funny topic but Why wouldn't a multi billion dollar industry not do use electro magnetism to dictate games life. I say for sure their doing it on all professional levels including college, especially college quadruple overtime games every game 😂

Hindsight is 20/20…3:16 Lebron needed a dunk on this play to close the game out. Can’t leave it to the refs to make the right call.
NFL is rigged too
So here's my question as someone who knows nothing about this and used to play NBA DFS: How soon after the fact are those close calls verified? Is it that night or are there reviews the next day well after the DFS sites post their cash outs?
From what i saw next day they get verifed because i seen many times where someone had 7 assists last night then i check box score again next day and he actually ended up with 8. Its not a lot of times it happens but once every couple games for sure
Usually the stats for the first half get verified during halftime. Not unusual to see a guy walk with 6 rebounds into the the locker room and return with 5 at the start of the 3rd QT. The ones on the second half usually get verified shortly after the game
I believe that it's mostly during the game that the reviews take place. I'm only basing this, however, on my memory of following box scores for fantasy basketball. I think it's rare for a statistic to change the following day.

Note how the media cooperated with the NBA in the Donagy cover up. As soon as the story was broken (leaked by Commish Stern), the press (corporate press) started referring to Donagy as "the rogue official", pre-judging the case and dismissing it as quickly as possible.
Because I've seen NBA games where an over/under or point spread bet would be as likely an explanation for the calls as incompetence. I mean, two quick first quarter fouls on a particular player and your "under" prop bet for their points might just pay off. I’m from Australia, why is sports betting only legal in certain states ? That’s crazy
nba is not a competitive league, its entertainment, its a movie, its a play with a script
I’m not arguing for one side or the other, but I think its worth noting. if the score keeper IS doing this with gambling motives, its definitely for DPOY and not game prop bets. when it comes to props the sportsbook will just find third party stats that don’t give him as many blocks or steals. these are much more “subjective” stats and one party might count a block as a steal or vice versa. or one party might give a block to one player instead of another. I’ve seen people think their bets hit because they are looking at one box score, but theres another respected source where the bet doesn’t hit according to their box score. The sportsbook picks the source thats advantageous to them every time. The books have no way of denying someone winning DPOY. Again I’m not saying the stat keeper did or didnt do it on purpose. Just pointing out that theres not much to gain from game props, and while you could argue for the DPOY award, there are so many different variables that it seems extremely risky to throw down 10k and hope your extra 2 blocks or steals at home games is going to be the difference maker.
