Hey Dustin... We use neat Methylated Spirit on our Trangia and hardly get any soot. We tried diluting it once and that resulted in much sootyness!
Love your vids! 😀 Thankyou!
The black "soot" or creosote is from using the trangia stove system with isopropyl alcohol which is only 70% alcohol, while this works it burns quite dirty inefficiently. Try using yellow HEET or denatured alcohol.
Thats what I needed to hear! Thank you for the insight. I will upgrade my fuel! Respect
@@EverythingsBeenDone dirty fuel for dirty deployment.
@@EverythingsBeenDone Coleman camp fuel works too.
Also can use paint thinner. AKA denatured alcohol
This
This video is fresh. Fresh like a brownie straight from the oven. Steaming, the chocolatey fragrance permeating the air. And I am talking a about a good brownie, a succulent one, very moist. We are not talking about dry brownies, no sir. This is a fresh, succulent brownie broadcast.
LOL Im dying LMAO!!
Weed brownies
Loved the Winston growl at the people from the safety of the van. LOL Also, 7 ravioli does not make a carbo load.
Heated Blanket Pro Tip: Cover it with another blanket to keep the heat in. Doesn't have to be a heavy blanket. They work much better that way!
This is such a good tip!
No cotton. poor insulator, dries slowly and feels cold when wet. Yur welk
Yep, exactly!
Yes, more nerdy ramblings in the woods! It has me chuckling
When I cook over a fire while camping I rub the outside of the pot before I use it with a little travel sized bar of soap. It helps keep the pot from getting black! Learned that while working for a canoe outfitter in Ely, MN.
Your van bug videos are awesome, good laughs!
Pro tip... Check out the GSI outdoors compact scraper for all you pot cleaning scraping needs.
when i was a kid in the boy scouts we used to coat our pans with dish soap and then the soot washed right off after cooking.
The key takeaway is that bikes are fun, and different bikes can be fun in different ways. How fun!
With a litle joint in the nature 🍃🍃
Tema 4x4 spacer kit! Amazon/eBay, about a week to get to Portland. Used it to lift my transit connect. Confirmed they make one for the mini promaster!
DUDE!! Yes! thank you for the lead. Much apprecated.
@@EverythingsBeenDone 🤙🤙
Awesome stuff! Love the camping videos. Thanks for taking us along on your adventures! ❤
As said, use denatured alc for no soot. Also, a zen monastery practice to clean the eating bowl is to pour your after dinner tea into the bowl. Drink the tea from the bowl. Wipe bowl clean with a sweet roll or bread( brioche roll works great) and boing, the bowl is clean
Great tip!
Completely loved every second of this video !
MORE of this! Highlight of my day. Thanks Dude
Love the van, love the camping!
I use the same down trousers paragonia branded..i agree with you!..next level!
I love the conversations you have with your not-there friend while camping. Always make me chuckle.
Good luck on the lift kit install. 👍👍
This video was fantastic! Super off the cuff, plenty of pro tips, a day in the life camping out. Perfect! Good video, brother!
Your tache is an art form, well done.
Thanks for the vid. So good to see the evolution of the van. The black soot on your stove can be fixed by putting a teaspoon of water into the fuel cup. Still be a bit black but much easier to clean off.
Weird, but indispensable tip:
Last hammock backpacking trip, I put on wool socks, wrapped my toes in aluminum foil, then another pair of wool socks. Slept in my hammock with a pad underneath me and in a sleeping bag in 28 degrees and my feet never felt the slightest chill!
Loving your videos pal IAM in the market for a van so much to think about thanks again 😎
Dustin, your ad libs on this one: comedy genius. You took it to another level. 👌
when i use my Trangia with the spiritburner (got the gasburner aswell) i always but a couple drops of water in the spirit. It helps with the soot. and before doing dishes, i look for a good patch of grass, and just rub the bottom of the pan on the grass. Keeps the set pretty much soot-free.
on another note, instead of the heated blanket, get a good sleepingbag with an inner bag. Keeps you cozy at night.
Those 'pointless epiphanies' are exactly what I'm here for
I feel seen! ❤️
You should buy the Gas burner and gas flask for the Trangia. No more sot on the cattles.
It's all about the hot water bottle! The one with the sweater will stay hot all night somehow. Super simple. Just found your videos loving it.
TRY use leaves or sand to clean the pots. very eco friendly and very clean
Hey - loved this! Forgot I was out last night with a buddy…… first concert in two years! See you Thursday though……. Promise!
I havent been around for a while, love the foo-man- chu you are rocking!
Welcome back!
Put some water in the burning alcohol when you use the trangia, that reduces the black staining on the pots. 👍
The half sponge is the ticket for camping, less water to saturate and less water to clean, brilliant
Wool wire to remove the soot from trangia!! Won’t look new but will look clean!!
Used a trangia for a month in Iceland best cookware ever!!
Whittle your own wooden spoon! 🤘🏼
Yeeess Dustin, more of this pls 💛
Careful what you wish for 😜
Hmm. Tucking shirt in. That's good stuff. Never tried that. Preloading the pot with a thin layer of dish soap makes that soot or wood soot come right off.
Great tip!
i effin LOVE this vids. i literally do the same thing in my old van except i dont have any power. i use a cooler, a milkcrate with 4 gallons of water and a folding beach chair to sleep on lmao
That is awesome!
Nice midweek vlog interlude DK. Highly flammable in the full body down gear...BUT....looks cozy as all heck player. The van is sweeter by the day. You're stylin...👍
Try using bioethanol in the burner - it burns clean and may even be slightly faster.
Said it before. Then again. And again. Love your vids, all are just pure entertainment!
Been usung the same Trangia burner since 1991. Only use mthylated spirits in it and zero soot. The soot comes from higher levels of ethanol. Less toxic but messier.
DK - To keep the pots and pans from turning black put some dish soap on a paper towel and put a little coating on the bottom of the pan. If it does get a little black it will wipe right off. (you don't need a lot)
Outstanding, no riding yet total fun. Great video, even made me laugh a few times with outburst HA! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Saw some similar trousers in a hiking series recently and immediately wanted a pair! Good to know there are more brands doing them
They are so ideal for cold outside sessions!
@@EverythingsBeenDone they also look very cool 👀
rub bar soap on your pots. they still get sooty but cleanup is easier...
We use a Trangia with Methylated Spirits, and it can be a bit sooty - the solution in this case is to add 10% water. Generally we buy it by the litre, so we mix 100ml into that 1l.
Works a treat!
Mate, if you rub some detergent on the bottom of the trangia, it stop it from going black.
Yellow heet = no soot. But it'll scrub off. And it gives the pot that campy look. So..either or.
In my experience, this is dependent on the fuel used. I use methyl hydrate and it burns absolutely clean with no residue.
Noice heated blankets for the win 🔌
Best choice for the stove is Everclear 190 proof. Burns the hottest and cleanest, and can be used for "medicinal" purposes, too.
Put dish soap on the outside of the pot to prevent soot. It should be there during use.
Use Methy or ethal alcohol. Ironically the isopropyl alcohol I use to remove wood creosote from my pots
Instead of an electric blanket, try an electric vest like those made for motorcycle touring. I've got a fleece one with long sleeves from Aerostich. Snuggly!
12:50 Dustin -- _It is time_ for a solid USB rechargeable LED flashlight. You can get one w/ good output & longevity in a very small package.
“We’ll see you ten minutes” 😂😂😂😂
That's a ferro rod not flint :) But I'm digging your channel. Glad I found it.
I have heard that smearing a thin layer of dish washing soap on the bottom and sides of pots makes cleaning the soot off of the pots easier.
Best videos ))) Thx)))
Easy off oven cleaner will have that pot looking brand new
Disco pants 🕺
Use denatured alcohol in the stove!
DK- Funny video, you seem a little crazy in this one! HAHA in a good way bro! Cheers, Steve
Need to do a "ride by the numbers" equivalent for the camp videos. 120 miles round trip, 30 degree temperature variance, and 7 ravioli. Another entertaining video to watch on my lunch break. Thanks
Man! :-) this warhol+eyes hoodie is amazing!!! What is it?
back pocket with drawstring closure top tier design
maybe ud just sit on drawstring all the time - would need to be a pretty flat drawstring
or do a cargo pocket
Add 10% (distilled) water to the bioethanol. Massively reduces the soot.
Bioethanol = alcohol for the stove
I was rolling when you said solo fruit loop guy. My dog was like WTH, I said easy hound it's just DK on deployment
I keep.a battery powered ryobi hand vac in the van on the regular. I have the same flooring and dirt seems to love it..go fig'.
*Jeez and I have that same orange/white bungee you're using for the h2o too..
My MH puffy pants have been reppin' since 2014
Hand vac sounds AMAZING..sourcing now!
Are the knock sensitive lights you had outside the window for security?
Dustin! I saw some cloning smoke in the video. Hence you were talking to Dustin #2
You know you can put a "I need some space" beneath that NASA logo 🤣🤣🤣
Your hands remind me of "thing" from Adams family. Along with the real hands that were used in the original Thunbirds series 😂
Use ethanol. Like 90+ alcohol. And put a drop or two of water from your waterbottle in the ethanol in the burner. This will help reduce or get rid of the sod on your pans. But... When I was a kid I used an ethanol burner in my trangia. Now I use a gasburner, my MSR (jetboil equivalent) or my multifuel burner. It's just easier and whatever to deal with. No sod. Love your videos. Such a highlight during the week
I think its time I convert that stove to the gasburner like you use.
Another Portland you tube guy - 2stroketurbo could probably help you lift your little van. He is into cool little cars and vans. Has a shop
As mentioned, denatured alcohol is the way to go. You may may want to try several vendors before you find one that burns the cleanest. Then you can buy in a larger quantity for economy. ALSO, using the simmer ring is going to reduce the oxygenation of the burning fuel, resulting in incomplete combustion and more soot. If you're just boiling water, don't mess with the simmer ring. Just get er done. ALSO ALSO, you can get a gas burner for the unit that takes standard isobutane (like MSR, Jetboil, etc) tanks, bottles, whatchamacallem. No soot from isobutane. At all, ever. Thanks for the vicarious campout!
ALSO ALSO ALSO Sleep on top of the eBlankey and use a down comforter over youse. You'll toast.
YOU are a great resource! Thank you for all these tips. Super helpful!
Dude, sweet purple vest! Is that Mountain Hardwear? Patagucci?
ITs this vest is a past seasons color: 🦺Retro Vest: bit.ly/3pD9q7W
Michelin Man Pants!!
Any issue with moisture buildup inside the van when sleeping?
What led lights are you using?
Lol why doesn't Ellie come with you? She made some sweet Reload panniers, Roland is my homie! Reload 4 lyfe!
Sort your soot; as other people have been saying, in the UK we have Methylated Spirit (an alcohol & methanol mix usually with some purple dye in). For a Trangia you use 80% Spirit mixed with 20% water.
Yep metho burns pretty clean
You are really dialing in your gear. Play around with a twig stove. Depending on the burn rules. Lotta fun. Lotta heat for food and drying socks. And the fuel is free. Either an old coffee can or cheap collapsible version.
There is seriously some rocket science going on here!
LMAO!!!!
Yo Dustin, no early access for true players?
Use denatured alcohol, it burns clean and won’t leave your pans all sooty and shit
Will do!
I have a Ford transit connect and I want to get a lift on it. I’ve called around to so many different places and no one will do it. They almost get mad that I’m even asking it’s so weird
I've had the same problem with soot on my cookware. I have found the solution though. Don't cook your food.
Every time you said “poofy pants”, I thought you were saying “poopy pants”, which, for the husband of a teacher of 3 and 4 year-olds, seemed appropriate. Maybe try the term “puffy”? Great vid.
🤣😂🤣 sage like wisdom! 😉
🤣🤣 excellent 😉 👍🏻👍🏻
This video is like a before and after Dustin getting stoned.
Hi new here but I'm loving ur content..I'm thinking I want to live in a van as well..but no idea where or how to start? I'm also thinking pay some one to build it out for me ❤️ nothin crazy need a toilet water n electric.any suggestions would help😎ty
I dont live in my van.
those wisps of smoke.....lead to munchies.
Trooth
Genuinely curious: of all the fine IPAs in the world, especially living in Portland, why do you choose New Belgium? Check out Breakside my dude.
I got hooked up with a few cases. hard to pass up free beer. I really like Ecliptic out of Portland.
If it ain't dirty it ain't campin
Holy Instagram deja Vu ramen man
Pro tip: Sponge Daddy sponges, for all your sponging needs.
Urgent: You need a bottle cap catcher screwed on about 4-5 inches below opener!
I gather those no problem. Its not like there are that many bottles being opened in that rig.
