I think a lot about this. The pathless path concept is useful, even if you remain in a full-time job, it is not necessarily about a radical change of activity. I see more and more people formulating this attitude towards things, calling it different words. The world is becoming too unstable, every day you need to recheck your values and goals. And it becomes unprofitable or even dangerous to take a passive position, whereas before (2019?) it was more permissible and such issues were not so pressing. I am a product designer from Russia, recently took a sabbatical for 6 months and eventually decided that I want to continue working in the same field, but in a different company and with different conditions. Happy and feeling alive now.
Have been on the Pathless Path for a year but haven't figured out a way to cover my expenses (which I've tried to cut down). This conversation makes me feel less anxious about giving this a shot! Thanks to both of you! ✨
I really liked this podcast as it resonates so much. I have been on this path since the beginning of this year and still figuring things out. The tip of "Do as much as possible the things that energize you and avoid as much as possible doing the things that de-energize you." is particularly useful.
thanks victor...took me a bit of trial and error to figure that out myself in the first couple of years and its still a constant learning journey. there are so many things I think I want to do but really only reveal themselves slowly over time. wishing you luck on your journey
Such a fun convo Lenny. inspired by your own embrace of this path and also was cool to see some of what I have noticed with others validated in your own experience!
I left my job 3 years back to stay on a Pathless path. I tried to build two start-ups during the past three years and both of them get failed. Now i am back to the square one , trying to look for a job as i have invested whatever I had in pursing my entrepreneurship quest. It takes 45 days to unwind as the speaker says. I am unable to understand why it didn't happen for me. What went wrong. Very much uncertain about what will be unfolded, but I am in conflict with the choices that i am making to bring the order it seems.
Lenny is your path documented anywhere..how much runway u had..what clicked..was it the figma investment that gave the breakthrough..how were u able to invest in it..etc
Not these specific questions, but to answer your question: I gave myself 6 months of runway and then extended it to 12 months since I hadn't discovered my next thing yet (relying on my Airbnb stock options being worth something, which was in doubt during Covid), what clicked was the newsletter was consistently growing and I was feeling good about doing this work, there was never really a breakthrough just steady and consistent growth and progress. The Figma investment happened in a very late round (one of the more recent ones), and won't make much impact on my life if it ever does create liquidity.
