    The Crown Jewels of the Baroque...(E.B. notwithstanding). Manze with Opus 6 and Egarr with Opus 3 have produced the benchmark of these unsurpassed masterpieces. I never tire of hearing any of them, unlike the Brandenburgs which I know and revere as wonderful buildings of exquisite construction. Alas, I would not want to live in them for they are lovely but there is little life in them. They rumble on with delightful permutations yet are somewhat bloodless whereas Handel's teem with life, passion, violence and polyphony ranging from profound to ferocious and even humorous.

      You are listening to music written for the aristocracy. It IS gorgeous, but beauty comes at a price.

    • @alexanderbrown1954

      Not quite! With a few exceptions (Chandos anthems, for example), the vast majority of his music was written for public performance in theatres and other public venues. The general public paid for their tickets just as we do today. Handel depended on the ticket money for his livelihood!

      And in fact, Handel became the first classical composer to become a succesful impresario (entrepeneur living well off the performance of his compositions), with his pieces being adored by people, and performed in public venues, with people attending his music with great enthusiasm. Of course he was comissioned by the King to compose such suites like Water Music, or Music for the Royal Fireworks, but he was also popular amongst the general public.

      Some of Handel’s music was written for the King - for example, the Water Music - or other aristocracy, such as the Anthems for the Duke of Chandos.
      However, the huge bulk of Handel’s music was written for ticket buying middle class audiences in London; the aristocracy may have slummed it in the theatres with the rest, but it was categorically not written *for* them, apart from a very very few notable exceptions.
      In this respect, England was very different from much of the rest of Europe where the point you make is reasonably valid until well into the next century.

    Andrew Manze revisited widely the tradition of the interpretion of baroque music for solo violin and of the concerto grosso. Haendel apperas us lighter in his recordings than in traditional records, in particular in the most demanding of them which seem me to be the 1, 5 and 6. The attack of the violin in Concerto 5 reminds of a similar beginning in one of the concerti grossi op; 6 of Corelli. This concerto Nr 5 is particularly brillant and light in this recording.

    Very disciplined performance by Manze here; expressive without the extravagance appropriate to, e.g., Corelli, but out of place here

    Two highlights for me are the polonaise of No.3, and the dreamlike musette of No.6. Mozart orchestrated the latter as part of his German language version of Handel's Acis & Galatea - a favourite of mine.

    • @elaineblackhurst1509
      @elaineblackhurst1509 3 роки тому

      Handel had already orchestrated it in the form of a string concerto grosso; anything done subsequently must therefore be a re-orchestration.
      The re-orchestration of some Handel works instigated by Baron van Swieten were the single biggest waste of time in Mozart’s entire lifetime, and the results horrible; the originals without exception are preferable by far.

    • @Neueregel
      @Neueregel 8 років тому +2

      corelli is whole different chapter. he is very underrated. But Handel, not so much. From Classical choir compilation mixes, he is almost everywhere. It's impossible to a proper Classical choir compilation without Handel or G.P.Palestrina

      When Corelli’s Opus 6 were published in 1714*, he set the bar so high that in truth, in terms of the string concerto grosso, only Handel’s Opus 6 of 1739 could be said to match it.
      The twelve works in each set by Corelli then Handel are without exception, magnificent.
      * In fact posthumously as Corelli died in 1713 after probably nearly thirty years polishing and revising these exquisite masterpieces.

    The Concerti Grossi op 6 are the peak of the genre. Handel incorporated the full range of his compositional styles into the movements, including trio sonatas, opera arias, French overtures, Italian symphonies, airs, fugues, themes and variations, and a variety of dances. They are among the best examples of the concerto grosso baroque genre.

      You can really only properly understand and appreciate late-Baroque music by listening to a wide selection of composers from the period, and from different countries.
      Handel (sic), JS Bach, and Domenico Scarlatti as the ‘Class of ‘85’ are a good starting place; then add on Corelli, Vivaldi, Telemann, Rameau, et cetera and you are entering a magical sound world.

      Agreed; Rameau is a great non-mainstream composer to investigate for those interested in a really unique Baroque voice.
      I have a large number of Rameau cds, and often use music from them in ‘Guess the Composer ?’ games; few people get it right, but everyone is pleasantly surprised and hugely impressed.

      There is no ‘…arguably’ about it, of their type, Handel’s Concerti grossi Opus 6 along with his model - Corelli’s Opus 6 - are *the* two greatest sets of Baroque string concerti grossi; Handel’s Opus 3 is ok, but not of a comparable stature.

      Porque el cuarto movimiento me parece “muy rápido” como de giga que es generalmente como finalizan las suites en el barroco. Mientras que el quinto movimiento me parece mas reposado, como un baile mas tranquilo.

      @@ruperttmls7985La verdad no se entiende tu apreciación. El 1er movimiento con ritmos marcados y 2do movimiento rapido recuerda a las oberturas a la francesa. El 3er movimiento es un largo convencional, seguido de un allegro en estilo fugado (que no tiene nada que ver con la giga)...y para finalizar un allegro ligero, casi galante,en forma binaria. Este concerto grosso recuerda mucho a la suite barroca. Handel incluyo muchas formas y estructuras en estos conciertos. Para mi está perfecto

    • @ruperttmls7985
      @ruperttmls7985 3 роки тому

      Si, de hecho el último movimiento esta escrito en 6/8 que es el compas de giga, que usualmente es el último movimiento de la suite barroca como bien señalas. Mi comentario es solo una opinión muy pero muy personal y es como a mi me gusta escuchar este concierto.
