      I had read that comment once, attributed to LVB. It seems that was mistaken. It seems, though, that Beethoven expressed his reverence for Handel, if anything, in even stronger terms:
      “Handel is the greatest composer that ever lived... I would uncover my head and kneel down on his tomb."
      Source: Edward Schulz (English musician who visited Beethoven in 1816 and 1823), "A Day with Beethoven", The Harmonicum (1824). [from gfhandel.org]

      @@PabluchoViision
      I think the quotation needs treating with some caution, and certainly not in isolation.
      At the time of Schultz’ second visit, Beethoven was working on the 9th symphony and thinking hard about the choral section, he was therefore studying carefully choral works by JS Bach, Mozart, Haydn, and of course Handel - Messiah in particular, so he was of course going to be praising Handel.
      The related point though is that Schulz was English; Beethoven was well aware of Handel’s status in England, and knew well that to big-up Handel would go down well with someone from that country in particular.
      Beethoven may also have had at the back of his mind getting some financial support, patronage, and/or subscribers - were the comments about Handel slightly cynical and did he have ulterior motives ?
      Might his comment not have been wasted on a German, French or Italian for example, and was therefore something served up especially for an English visitor ?
      That said, Beethoven did clearly rate Handel highly, and studied his works carefully; my question though is whether he really meant ‘greatest’, rather than great, additionally, if he did mean greatest, did he refer to the choruses alone, or to something else in particular, or to Handel generally.*
      * Beethoven as a keyboard player knew Bach’s 48 well; it is therefore inconceivable that he should rate Handel’s keyboard works above those of JS Bach.

    What a delight! Handel's inventiveness in these pieces, his evident pleasure in his own talent, gives us a pure, uncomplicated musical enjoyment. Sangiovanni's interpretation in just this spirit easily overcomes my "piano-averse" (for early periods) listening biases. The triumphant sculpture seems a better accompaniment to Handel's grand works, Milton's poetry, etc. - let's call it a proclaimed triumph of BC's wonderful presentations of less-often heard wonders. Thanks!

    Did Gould play Haendel? If not, why not? Legend has it that Haendel was a great admirer of Bach. They knew of each other and were neighbors even though 90 miles apart. Since Gould was such a devotee of Bach it would seem logical that Haendel would also be included in that devotion. Both masters of the baroque period.

    • @calmunson5022
      @calmunson5022 3 роки тому

      I believe it is partly the way Bach wove his harmonies/ voices. The movement of voices in contrary motion, for example, is seductive when combined with great harmonic progressions and even sometimes when the harmonies are quite difficult to grasp as in WTC. If you listen to just the opening minute of this video you will hear there is a lot of parallel voice movement. Bach was drawn to a style that avoided this. The opening of this Suite reminds me more of some jazz structures. Vertical harmonies with a lot of running around and little weave of lines.

    GEORG FRIEDRICH HAENDEL
    { HALLE, Saint - Empire 1685~1759 WESTMINSTER }
    « HANDEL : 9 SUITES « {Date de composition : ca 1710~1717}
    Magnifique interprétation au piano, de ses œuvres de GEORG FRIEDRICH HAENDEL, de SCIPIONE SANGIOVANNI, un virtuose italien de 29 ans, découvert en France grâce au festival de LA ROQUE D’ANTHERON ou on l’a entendue pour la première fois en 2006. Son palmarès comporte notamment un premier prix au « CITTÀ DI MARSALA « et au « PREMIO MONOPOLI «, et plus d’une dizaine de podiums, où il se classe à la deuxième ou troisième place bravo pour sa carrière musicale qu’il fait. Les 9 SUITES en question constituent le « VOLUME 2 « de la production de HAENDEL pour clavier, qu’on considère généralement comme un amalgame de pièces inégales rassemblées sans vrai projet musical. Un excellent texte d’accompagnement décrit comment cet assemblage disparate mêlant goût français, italien, allemand et anglais a finalement acquis la forme de l’édition de 1733, jouée ici. Si on ajoute que le style un peu échevelé de HAENDEL passe moins bien au piano que les structures très formelles de JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH {1685~1750}, on comprend que peu de pianistes aient donné l’intégralité du volume. Dans des sélections en revanche, brillent SVIATOSLAV TEOFILOVITCH RICHTER {1915~1997}, ANDREI GAVRILOV, RAGNA SCHIRMER, et EVGENI KOROLIOV, SCIPIONE SANGIOVANNI semble avoir préféré ici un Steinway à son habituel Kawai, ce qui accentue encore sa volonté affichée de ne pas « sonner clavecin « établie d’entrée dans le prélude de HWV 434 étonnamment romantique et saturé de résonances. Mais ce familier des Concours, qui joue certes très propre, peine à renouveler l’intérêt de l’auditeur au long de ces deux heures de musique, en cause peut-être surtout dans les pièces lentes des ornements manquants d’imagination et des climats trop peu variés. Si les pièces rapides avancent bien, il me semble que dans les plus lentes le fil se rompt parfois aux point ou la phrase devrait trouver son rebond. Je garde pour ma part ma préférence pour le clavecin. GEORG FRIEDRICH HAENDEL virtuose hors pair a l’orgue et au clavecin, HAENDEL dut à quelques œuvres très connues notamment l’oratorio le MESSIAH composé en 1741, ses concertos pour orgue et concertos GROSSO, ses suites pour le clavecin, ses musiques de plein air WATER MUSIC publiée en 1733 et MUSIC FOR THE ROYAL FIREWORKS composée en 1749 de conserver une notoriété active pendant tout le XIXe siècle, période d’oubli pour la plupart de ses contemporains. Cependant, pendant plus de trente-cinq ans, il se consacra pour l’essentiel à l’opéra en italien plus de 40 partitions d’opéras séria, avant d’inventer et promouvoir l’oratorio en anglais dont il est un des Maîtres incontestés. Merci pour ses chefs-d’œuvre de GEORG FRIEDRICH HAENDEL compositeur de génie, et ce moment de musique au piano exceptionnel avec SCIPIONE SANGIOVANNI que j’ai beaucoup apprécié bravo.

      @@fernandofernandezgar porém, fortepiano foi o instrumento de teclado para o qual Haydn e Mozart mais escreveram. Em suas juventudes, usaram e escreveram para o cravo, ou clave, e depois, o fortepiano. Jamais para o piano moderno, que aparentemente, eh teu instrumento preferido. Não havia o piano moderno. Tocar Haydn e Mozart em piano moderno, também eh infidelidade musical. Como aqui, Handel ao piano.
