This is the sound of the American West. You take a little folk, country western, blues (and some soulful singing) and it takes you to those quiet Montana mountain hills. The only other album I can think of in modern times that captures that sound also is Born and Raised by John Mayer. Love Ray with this group.
The letter: Caroline, In the mountains the sun sets up in ribbons so high, it's like I don't never wanna get old... don't ever wanna die. We been seein' steady rain, 'bout to drive us all insane, nearly lost a few head up in the pines. At night, when some of the boys get to talking up their girls back home, you know I tell 'em there ain't none as fine as mine. I can hear old Chapman sayin' come morning we'll break the range, be pushin' hard now for the plains. I close my eyes and I can see you... I close my eyes and I can feel you here. God willin' an the creek don't rise, I'll be home again before this time next year. Though I fear this fever won't break... -All my love
I bought this album/cd when it came out and have listened to it many, many times. Now I listen to it on Spotify every once in a while. I was listening to it just a couple of days ago while cleaning around the house. I stopped at the end of this song because the last two lines hit me as if I had never heard them before. In 2021. I don't know if it's the separation of loved ones during the pandemic including those that get sick and die alone, without family around, or what. But it hit me again all these years later. I imagine Caroline reading this letter, smiling, until she gets to the last two lines.
Ray, since the storm I've had this song in my mind: Carolina in the mountains The sun sets up in ribbons so high It's like I don't never wanna get old, don't never wanna die We seein' steady rain 'Bout to drive us all insane Nearly lost a few head up in the pines At night, some of the boys Get to talking up their girls back home I tell 'em none's as fine as mine The old chaplain sayin' Come morning we'll break the range Be pushin' hard now for the plains I close my eyes, I can see you I close my eyes, I can feel you here God willin' and the creek don't rise I'll be home again before this time next year Though I fear this fever won't break All my love
Recently I've been on a search for music that is truly different, something soulful. This is by far one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my entire life. Nearly brings me to tears to be honest.
this night was magical. the studio was freezing, but Ray can light a fire with that voice and all that conviction. and yes, his beard would be the kindling.
Everything about this song makes you feel total jubilation and magic. From the band to the lyrics to the voice. It all meshes together in perfect harmony. Just the epitome of beautiful.
This song reminds me of a Civil War soldier writing a letter to his girldfriend. Talking about how the war is going...God Willin' and that creek dont rise...... "come hell or high water, if this war doesnt get worse, I'll be home again before this time next year" Though I fear this fever (heated war) wont break LOVE LOVE this song!
That steel riff is a sample from a song and its going to annoy me if I can't figure it out. The lyrics go something like "When the day comes to end" or something along those lines. :|
Something's wrong here....here is Ray with 105,020 views, 326 likes, 8 dislikes and 24 comments.....with a 98% like/dislike in his favour....NICE ONE Ray..way to go(I'm a HUGE fan).... Then i realised something. I checked the analytics on a young singer/songwriter who is with SONIC FOXX MUSIC(i'm the owner)...a small insignificant label....and JASMINE LAMPORT is hovering around the same are of popularity as Ray...i'm obviously not making comparisons between the two.....but HELLO....JASMINE LAMPORT is showing signs of being RIGHT UP THERE..with top folk...google her song BREATHE(the one on 23,000+ views) and you'll appreciate what i'm saying here.

It's like folk music with country and soul to it.
That's kind of a perfect combination
I can't believe a decade has gone by since I started listening to this.

And yet it is a terribly sad song knowing he'll never see his true love again.
Oh boy, I think I just fell in love.
