2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt: As special as it should be!

- The Ford Mustang is one of the most characterful sports cars on sale, so what happens when it takes on upgrades inspired by the Steve McQueen film, Bullitt? Dan Prosser finds out in this CarGurus UK review.

Pros
Fabulous old-school V8 of GT models
Charismatic looks and driving experience
Bullitt edition is sharp to drive
Cons
High running costs
Mustangs with the four-cylinder engine have less character
Cramped rear seats
The CarGurus verdict
Great to look at and entertaining to drive, the Mustang is everything a muscle car should be. European sports cars with their more compact dimensions, lighter mass and higher-spec suspension components will run rings around a Mustang, but you wouldn’t necessarily be having more fun. For the full muscle car experience, the 5.0-litre V8 that powers the GT model is a must.
Despite its sheer size, the Mustang isn’t an especially spacious car inside. The pair of rear seats are actually pretty cramped, meaning they’re only of any real use for children. The car does offer plenty of boot space, however.
If your budget will run to a facelifted Mustang (from 2018 onwards), you’ll enjoy a more powerful engine (443bhp from the V8, up from 410bhp) and a much improved infotainment system. The dated six-speed automatic gearbox was replaced by more modern 10-speed, while the manual transmission benefits from a rev-matching function on downshifts (which can be switched off if you prefer to blip the throttle yourself).
The first Mustang to be offered in right-hand drive is also the best modern Mustang of the lot - and by no small margin.

One of the few that understand the importance of the manual. Love this car if simply for the gearbox and v8 sound. Just brilliant and a dying breed
I bought one last week it's the best thing since sliced bread I can't stop driving it,not felt this happy about a car since 1975 my first car a trimph herald convertible thank you ford.
Just bought a 2020 Bullitt last week - L0478. OMG the engine sounds so good with that GT350 Intake paired with the active exhaust. I feel like I'm a kid on Christmas morning. Now I have to have the thing wrapped in XPEL Ultimate paint protection film...
Sold my BMW 4 series for a Mustang GT and never looked back. Sounds amazing and has more soul than any European competitors.
The Mustang is weighs less than the BMW4 series.
How does it compare to a M4?
@@bighands69 no it doesnt

Just picked mines up today.......smitten !!
Nice and honest review! For those interested I use my Bullitt as a daily driver and get around 23 mpg with normal driving and commute around 40 miles a day.
Good on you for using it everyday and not leaving it in the garage.
Same here...about 23 around Houston and looks like the sweet spot is about 74 mph on interstates...get close to 30 on some trips.
25 year driving German automatics Inc AMGs and just bought a new 2020 mustang gt with every possible extra and manual gearbox. OMG its amazing! The first car I have had that turns heads and makes me feel great. P......s off Audi and Tesla drivers no end.
Took a bullit out on a test drive yesterday I have just bought this he'll of a car wow in love again
Just got one and coming from a Tesla. This car has a real soul and just love driving it and the sound is intoxicating. ❤❤❤
Fab review. Really sounds honest and in touch with what real petrol heads feel. Saving right now for one before we all go electric!
Have had my Bullitt for about a year...still smile every time I crank that V8 up!
excellent review, bravo.
Thanks for the review, bought one K3589 based on it. More than happy with it.
Get mine in March I can’t wait. Good video
Great review. Thanks!
Wonderful car. No fancy turbos, lovely positive manual box. Great balance of old and new.
good job there "limey"... Unfortunately your 5.0 is short a few USA hp's. Removing resonator & adding an X pipe will add to the fun factor
Absolutely love it!
Great review
Extinction Rebellion just spat their bottled water out lol, great edition of the Mustang and that V8 sound is sweet, excellent review 👍
The goal of Marxist movements like Extinction Rebellion is to cause the collapse of western economic society.
None of this is new by the way there were around when I was in college decades ago.
I liked the wavy hand and tippytoe move at the start
That V8 needs no music. Steve McQueen would have loved this green muscle machine.
I have to have this one
In my opinion the GT Mustang is a great value for what you get the fun and overall performance and styling is really terrific. The Bullitt takes this GT and improves it’s by maki g it more unique and different then the standards. The GT350 more so! For me the Bullitt was a satisfying compromise providing as much or more excitement at a more reasonable price then the GT350! I’m not interested in tracking my car so the Bullitt was best as a daily driver!
The GT models have a race car look about them and the Bullitt has a more everyday cool look to it.
@@bighands69 - I agree
Very nice car, totally would recommend this!
Great car.
Just love and own one I baught it because for the money I don't think there's much that really competes with what it offers.
Thats a beautiful car, i have a 2017 ecoboost mustang in white but want get a gt mustang in a couple of years, wud love the bullitt mustang but be more than happy to get a gt in grabber lime, twister orange or magnetic 👌👍👍
This guy gets it
The Mustang really is a gorgeous car. I just wish Ford would offer an upgraded interior as an option. As it is now, there's too much cheap plastic all over the place
This is one thing that I don't get with Ford - they spoil some amazing cars (e.g. Fiesta ST too) by cutting corners on stuff like this. I can understand the reasons for saving a few pennies when it comes to the bread and butter models, but there ought to be some sort of 'luxury' option for the more special ones.
Having said that, I recently got a Mustang, and the interior is nowhere near as bad as you'd be led to believe from reviews. It compares OK with most ordinary modern cars in terms of quality, but the design of it is just gorgeous - way more interesting than most German rivals, and less tacky in design in my opinion than rival American muscle cars.
Does it come with heated front seats?. If so where are the switches for it as the dashboard looks like it has blanking plates where the heated seats button are on other Mustang models.
Great car. Love the review.
Now I just need the cash :)
Gary Dowling You too?
I have a bullitt myself but now I want a right hand drive one now. 😩
Had some guy in a BMW m2 who fancied his chances on the Keighley by pass, no contest
Great
This engine's sound...
God im in love with this car and so so want 1 .Its just not fare ☹️
One nitpick is that the convertible GT is the most expensive model when equipped with some options for example 401a, 20” wheels, auto.
No it's not 😂
Sad that soon we will be forced to drive quiet electric cars with no soul and no gear changing etc sad times are coming :(
That's leftwing politics and bureaucrats for you: equal misery for all. It's for your own good, of course. The Nanny State know better than you what you need, or should want.

This is not going to stop with just cars. They are now moving onto HD video and saying it should not be streamed as because of carbon emissions.
The tyrants are only getting started.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🤠
I've got one. Effing unreal, but you need to respect this Pony. Ha ha ha.
Interesting that the GT350 in the States is had at about your 48k price or perhaps even slightly less. Now that car at that price will stack up very nicely with ANYTHING in the sports car realm. Suspension and handling are really exceptional with another near 50 HP on top. The R versions can give many Porsches a run for it, and I'm not joking.
Eric Dawson - The GT350 (in the USA) has a base price of $60k without options. The R is about $10k more. The base price of a Bullitt is now about $47k. A standard Base GT Mustang with the V8 is about $35 without any options. Obviously options can easily drive the price up.
You're not lying. The Base GT350 was second only to the new Porsche 992, by just a hair, in Motortrend's 2019 Driver's Car of the Year award. Tested on both road and track by professional drivers, no other makes worldwide, at any price point, were even close to those two. So, naturally, in yet another stunning display of Detroit brilliance, Ford has terminated the car and the 5.2L flat plane crank V8 that made it what it is.

There are several American cars that are punching well above their weight including Corvettes, Camaro, Dodge and Mustang.
American cars have always been cheaper than European cars because they do not have the same level of taxes in their economy. People are much wealthier in America.
I put a manual in any thing more fun when drivering that car in Ireland goes for €70,000
Great car and I love that colour.
is 10mpg achievable with a careful right foot?
Great car, Fab colour. 10mpg.? hmmmm.?
Travel hopefully ~ 20mpg would be.. perfect.!
Lovely film. Thank you.

Yes, more than double that if you drive normal. It's not 1969 anymore.
@@Billbothebear14 I had a 16 reg 5.0 GT manual. 25 mpg easy on a long run. High teens locally. No stop/start function.
@@simonmurfin1991 long gears for highway economy.
I saw you touching the door - is it still hard plastic?
There's now a mixture of hard and soft touch plastics, it's still a very pleasant place to be.
I wonder how rare this car is in the UK.
BUZZspec rare not many allocated and expensive compared to the US
They originally imported 400. A few more just arrived.
it's just a common car, but even Astons are common nowadays.
@@metitusable
It is not even close to being common. There are not that many Mustangs in the UK as only people who can afford them are not plentiful.
@@bighands69 Not sure which part of the UK you live in but where I live there's plenty. London is full on them and as I have to drive from London to MK on a regular basis, I also see a good few of them around the motorway. There's around 5 close to Milton Keynes central alone including mine (bullitt). So yes pretty common, but definitely not as common as they're in the states.
People always say the manual is dying ....ummm no it's not ....maybe in sports car
The manual will be dead when everything becomes electrified

You can still make manual electric sports cars
Why they didn't use the Tremec from the GT350 is what kills this car for me that is, I can feel it fighting me on downshifts even with rev matching, and even worse when I was higher up in the RPMs. Ah well, back to the Challenger 392 SRT.
No burnout
For some reason I don't think you mentioned fuel consumption 😬
Robert Langham peps getting 21 MPG. in the US.
I have 15,000 miles on my 2018 GT my Avg is 11.3 miles. But i drive fast.
@@ancientruinsofficial Not that surprising the environment's in trouble.
@@robertlangham2356 the environment? ....is in trouble? What do u mean.
Iffin’ you’re thinking about fuel consumption driving a five litre monster of a muscle car.......then you’re in the wrong car.....🤔
isn't the most expensive mustang a gt350r?
Jonathan Atanasov - So the most expensive one is the GT500 which can get priced to over $100k US, fully optioned

and yet the review puts music over the crucial part when it starts up #Duh
The porche 911 turbo has a,lot of character so does bugati fetari mesariti all turbos
Such a beautiful machine. Awesome.
But I really hope Ford crash and burn because of what they did to the Mustang name.
That atrocious monstrosity of a thing they call an electric SUV the emach and then put the mustang name on it. Disgrace
The only reason I can figure they decided to call it the mustang was to give the car more appeal in what is becoming a rapidly growing market what with all the history and heritage the mustang name comes with. Let's face it most people think a Mustangs cool. Not this new electric one though
@@ryanmansfield7262 I almost physically tru up when I saw it...

It actually looks dated. Not impressed.
