They FINALLY Motorized the Main Camera!

- Sometimes the interesting smartphones dont even come to the USA! Today we are durability testing the BRIGHT ORANGE Phantom X2 from Tecno. The Phantom X2 has a motorized main camera that theoretically helps provide hardware bokeh to portrait images. However... I have my doubts about it actually being functional.

The camera seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
wow
With this tech. May be we can fit uw-10x tele cams to dual cam setup. 0.6x to 2x a lens and 2x-10x another lens. Now it physically possible. But risky. External moving parts.
if it had something like a crazy 10x Optical zoom because of it but it literally only has 2.5 ZOOM. most phones with non motorized cameras have the same optical zoom
They will create the problem creep don't worry
Can be said the same thing about foldables.
This is my first time watching jerry doing a teardown from Tecno...Tecno has come a long way!!!

For the price, even though the motorized camera itself is pretty much a gimmick, it still is a pretty good phone. Also, might I go as far as to say, that it also looks very good.

Jerry the monster is the only reason why smartphone manufacturers (except OnePlus)make their phones structurally strong. Thanks Jerry

His name's Zack not Efron.
Yeah why don't you make a pedestal with his photo and sleep next to it
You should probably make another exception for ROG as well
The problem with Tecno is the poor software support and the crapware that it comes with. However, the designers there do know what they're doing. Love from Kenya 😊

Thank you for the video ❤️ Looking forward to the second part 👍
Great job on the video Zack! Thanks for making it.
Let's go; love watching you showcase all these cool phones that no one else does. The motorized camera low-key looks a little gimmicky but I thought the same of multi-camera phones and now that's the norm. So I guess we'll see!
The difference is that didn’t understand the utility of multi-camera phones. There is no utility of this motorized camera.
What brings me back every time is “Scratches at a level 6 with deeper groves at a level 7”, a classic
my man we love you and your work .
The tecno and infinix brands are all over Asia and Africa....Really common here but Apple and Samsung still have a huge user base....I think
Yay! My phone passed!... I can't wait for the teardown... Been very curious about the insides of the phone... especially the retractable camera
I once had the Samsung that was more camera than phone, so a motorized camera has been done previously. However, as a picker dwelling phone, the mechanical lens mechanism got bogged down with dust. And it did look like you were taking calls on your camera. I think this is neater, but I'll wager dust will be it's Achilles heel too
'pocket dwelling'
and FINALLY, you got your hands on them🎉🎉
Can't wait for the teardown!
i never expected this from phone brands like Tecno
Motorizing the main camera is a good idea so long is implemented properly. Maybe use the Sony IMX 989 and give it optical zoom, similar to what Samsung did with the S4 Zoom. Maybe do a 2 step variable aperture.
That Samsung Zoom camera phones was really ahead of every phone back in the day. So sad Samsung decided to kill it too early instead of improving the design and functionality
@@sihamhamda47 some leaks suggest that the s24 ultra might have an internal zoom motor

Love the channel ❤
I would like to see innovation for optical zoom as extension device attachment with NFC capabilities. Either, they can think to put only large sensor on back with removable optical camera for normal people usage and for professional, same sensor can be used for large zoom.
Loving the bold colours on this one.
I've watched a lot of you doing this and it hurts with the destruction... But I also love that you've done it.
What the hell is that feeling?!
Tecno has made it, it's now in Jerry's hands 😍
I think a much better way to do a retractable camera and it would look very cool, have a bigger difference and you can use it as a phone stand would be to have a bellows type camera i.e. something like a Kodak Retina deisgn would be what I was thinking of.
Thanks a ton for this
When I read the title and saw that case, I was fully expecting the whole camera casing to swivel forward
Really interesting design! Hope it survives
nice seeing a phone that isn't a widely recognized brand in the US. Most people in the US only know of maybe 4 or 5 phone manufacturers (although let's be honest most probably only know of Samsung and Apple) and they would surprised to find out there are a lot more than just 4 or 5.
Same here. He should do more cheap phones, too.
Well most overseas phones are either too expensive to import or just not available. Also people like for their phone to work long term so taking a chance on a phone with little to no support from another country isn’t viable.
Havent heard abou this phone. Nice tear down video again Jerry! 😊
This companies phone has lots of security issues
They put security risking malware in there phones

This Phantom phone looks Awesome...Can't wait for the Teardown...Great Job as Always Jerry...Stay Blessed 😊
Lol, tbh, I kind of dig that textured orange back cover. Tecno should do a collab with Cheetos. Maybe sell it as a Cheetos dust hiding phone? 😆
Awesome narrative
Damn jerry i've been waiting for the teardown video for ages now😢
Interested in seeing the teardown of the camera
Tecno is kinda as popular as Itel and Infinix in my country (Madagascar) with but also very expansive for what you get... Resellers sell them at exaggerated price. People here buy Tecno/iTel/Infinix especially for battery life since most of them don't care (or don't know) much about other specs.
Very nice jerry sir❤
bro u done things beautifully
Zach talking trash about the orange phone with a near identical colored knife sitting next to it is hilarious 😅
These sell like crazy here in Africa. Its great to see this device on your channel. Finally
Just crazy this company's phone is mostly avoided by Indian because of security issues
Indian government has also warned us about this
are they any good? compared to samsung? I think the problem with such brands is software support.
@@sanketnegi1 Samsung have taken the market share significantly after the relaunch of their A series phones which are selling well here. TECNO featured here had the lion's share before that. I can vouch for their flagships but not so much their lower tier devices. I also agree software support especially on their cheaper devices is poor. But they are good for most average consumers and are short cycle phones.
Thanks for sharing
I love that colour!
The price in ₹ rupees was a nice move. Thumbs up for that. 👍🏻

Retractable cameras hold lot more potential. It seems like an optimum way to fit larger sensor with a longer focal length without turning camera bump into camera mountain. Imagine 1" type sensor with a f1.0 and 35mm equi.FL. would be enough to give tough competition to dslr in low light and bokeh.
Tecno is definitely not the first to have a telescopic camera on a phone. ex: ZenPhone Zoom
The reason telescopic zoom has been abandoned is because it is less elegant and prone to failure and is imprecise. The modern implementation is something like Huawei's periscope camera and some computational photography to generate the bokeh effect.
So I did the math and it mostly checks out:
For bokeh, a 2x telephoto at F1.0 (somewhere around 19mm FL or 54mm 35mm equiv.) would definitely yield decent bokeh, similar to APS-C at 30mm F1.4. Of course, you can achieve much more with faster lenses, larger sensors and longer focal lengths so I'm not sure it's reasonable to say it would be tough competition unless we exclude most of what's available. Also, obviously you couldn't get good bokeh on the x1 mode but portrait lenses usually aren't using small focal lengths so that's fine.
Depth of field in mm at 1m (x1 is assumed to be an angle of view around 77 degrees as is common):
-Theoretical phone: 58.6mm at x2
-MFT 25mm F1.4: 61.2mm
-APS-C 30mm F1.4: 57.4 mm
-Full Frame 50mm F1.4: 30.9mm
Not a bad idea at all. As to low light performance, larger sensors have much lower noise and F1.0 isn't even one full stop brighter than a lot of lenses available for interchangeable lens cameras so I don't think that checks out. People like to say that the computational photography methods smartphones use are more advanced than what cameras offer but that ignores the fact that you can get better denoising than what is available on smartphones these days when processing the RAW files on a computer. Dxo PureRaw 3, Topaz Denoising and Lightroom (recently updated) all offer better denoising than smartphones because they take advantage of the much more powerful GPUs available in computers
@@kendokaaa I think u r talking about 50mm on full frame which is quite tight focal length won't be useful in day to day usage(if there's only one camera). So that's why I've given 35mm FL which is far more versatile.
F1.0 13mm 1"type = F1.8 23mm APSC = F2.8 35mm on full frame
To get better an idea u can compare it with Fujifilm x100v which having similar setup.
(Multiple cameras might not be possible as additional weight and cost comes from high quality lenses, variable aperture and retractable mechanism makes it unviable)
@@kendokaaa actually low light performance will also be on par with apsc/ full frame
F1.0 capture 4 time more light than F2.0 and 8 time than F2.8.
Area wise, Full frame and apsc are larger than 1" sensor by 8 and 4 times respectively.
So it's fair comparison
@yashkambli2807 The reason I went with 50mm is because that's common for portraits and I'm not sure people would like a narrow 35mm as their only phone camera. Also, 35mm does much worse for bokeh at the same distance so the comparison to mirrorless/DSLRs gets even worse.
Micro Four Thirds is already at a disadvantage for bokeh compared to larger sensor systems and it still yields more than twice the bokeh with a common portrait lens compared to the theoretical 1 inch sensor 35mm equiv. F1.0:
MFT 25mm F1.4 at 1m: 61.2mm DOF
Theoretical phone: 140mm DOF
It only compares well to larger cameras at 50mm equiv. and beyond
Can't wait for the teardown zack
I love the design I must say
Tecno makes amazing phones. They've really been stepping up.
My guess for the purpose of the retractable lens is a tiny bit more space from the sensor so the 3D portrait photos are extremely precise in their depth perception. I guess we'll see in the teardown, though.
I've been using Tecno since 2020... It's a great brand with great high end, mid range & budget smartphones ❤

Who thought Tecno could have done it! Huge credits to Tecno for making their most advanced flagship phone in 2023.
It's advanced only if it's functional. We'll have to wait.
There's still major cost cutting (very sus behavior in what they cut and the price is ridiculous) but yeah, they've come a long way.

Really love my motorized popup selfie cam!
I think it's a real shame those went out of fashion, it's such a much better option than a hole in the display..
Me too, i also love my pop up camera phone its such a great initiative rather than having a small notch to add front facing camera.
Finally some one who shares my thought. Probably the reason why am still stuck ( happily ) on OnePlus 7pro.
@@djdevlean indeed im also oneplus 7t pro user 😊😊
So it looks and feels like an orange peel... but does it provide any nice grip ? 🤔 That would be a plus in my book.
I think the better solution found for the moment is the Xiaomi water drop lens. A drop of wayer that is used to change how the lens work. The lens can be used for macro then like ultra wide angle just by modifying that drop structure in the lens
For more beautiful colors like this on the mainstream manufacturers!
