This was my favorite on greatest hits ,I bought when I was 16.at 23 I figured out how the song goes(I ‘m a guitar player)played it at many, many gigs…now I’m 71,and the song sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it.Dave, thanks for sharing your genius with us!
What a quartet. When I was a kid I dabbled in piano, then trumpet and was just beginning to show an interest in playing drums. My dad took me to see The Dave Brubeck Quartet in concert. I loved it all, but Joe Morello was the one who really blew my mind. He could do more with one hand than most drummers could (or still can) do with all 4 limbs. That was the day I started saving for my first set of Ludwig drums (Joe was their celebrity endorser). When the Beatles came along and I saw Ringo playing Ludwig drums, I figured the Beatles must be pretty good. They were, but their music soon consumed me which derailed my jazz ambitions. Such are the problems of the adolescent mind. I'm old(ish) and retired now, but I still love 'em all.
Joe Dodge just smiled and kept great time. When Joe Morello stormed on the scene with thunderous drum features, Paul Desmond hid backstage and said “him or me!”-Brucked said something like “he’s staying.” - years later Joe became my teacher and friend, a marvelous person and one of the greatest drummers we’ve ever had (great teacher too). He and Desmond became close friends and I guess Paul got used to no longer being exclusive cool front man...he got used to the much higher paychecks as well I figure...
If you want to hear a fantastic "The Duke", a different tune, by Clare Fischer and his Big Band check it out her on UA-cam. One of the best arrangements I have ever heart!!!
yeah -Joe Dodge this charismatic and very very swingin drummer was very unique - listen to the early DB4tet recordings - You will agree ! this formation brought me to jazz - Joe Morello was a kind of his own - a genious.....

Desmond was the best of all time on sax.
Another great classic Nicky!! Dave Brubeck has been one of my favourites for so long. Thank you for the post

This was filmed for a "March of Dimes" TV segment in 1956.
May
Did 1956 and TV keep Gene Wright off stage, or something else?
Gene didn't join the quartet until early 1958. Bob Bates will "filling in" for his brother Norman at the time this was filmed.
Grade A badass
Someone noticed 5-string bass?)

Where are Jie Morello and Eugene Wright?
Brubeck composed it but Shearing performs it better.
