Imagine spending an evening with this quartet playing live in the bar, you just chilling with a bottle of favourite poison and good friends to appreciate this with.
We would probably not say a word to each other during the whole concert and I would spend it crying and trying to not be noisy. I can't imagine seeing them on live, I would just cry.
when ( on PBS Nancy Wilson interviewer ) Nancy Wilson ( jazz singer ) interviewed Charlie 'Bird' Parker ( alto great ), Paul Desmond was there, taking it in.
You know, I always listen to this song when I lose someone I held close for so long…a friend, girlfriend, or a family member. But the beauty of this song reminds me that although it’s painful, it’s for the better. I realize this especially during Brubecks solo, but I realize the beauty of our time together through Desmond’s solo. Thank you gentlemen of the quartet, and happy listening everyone!
Dave Brubeck is the ambassador of Jazz for the entire world. He is the greatest Jazz Musician and the leader of the greatest Jazz Band ever walked the face of this planet. Joe Morello is certainly the greatest drummer with his thematic, storytelling, never played the same thing twice, colorful, phenomenal technique that used 100 percent musically - a rare talent, Paul Desmond and Gene Wright are also certainly among the greatest. I am lucky enough having met, got to know, and taken lessons from Joe Morello in Elizabeth, New Jersey in early 70's.
Kazim acar hI you wright your list i of favourite jazz players like a yumy recipe for a chocolate cake ....All the ingredients are added ,,,,, what a treat lol xx
D.Brubeck Quartet was all about Paul Desmond. I am sure D.Brubeck was a great leader, great musician, great persona, a hard worker and really worldwide ambassador of Jazz. If it were not D.Brubeck, P.Desmond's life/career would be even shorter. However, I have always thought that D.Brubeck's style was so restricted, so predictable, may be due to his classical background. It was Desmond's magic that kept their music run like a river. That is my subjective opinion.
I'm a Japanese and it sounds to me like French classical music.(remembering Dave‘s mentor was fabulous Dalius Millhaud)They always create & play very difficult tunes so easily. Wonderful musicianship……
@@felixlgq it's not supposed to be Japanese music.its a fusion album with slight hints of Japanese music culture.. I mean if u can't hear the Japanese-inspired piano in this than you need to get your ears checked.
Dave Brubeck had an uncanny knack for reaching into a cultural milieu and extracting something of its soul ... Having been to Japan a number of times, I am easily transported there again with this haunting and exquisite piece. Truly one of his best and not usually listed among them.
Did someone notice how everything is perfect in this version? One single wave of beauty. 4 musicians playing one into the other like one single entity. Even the gesture of Dave’s fingers on the piano and Paul delivering an unbelievable performance like he’s talking or just breathing, showcasing his best qualities climbing on peaks and slipping releases that make perfectly sense in this infinte magic hook. I’ve never had something like this with any song..where I feel it so much and I go with them on their wave. Great esteem for these quartet.
I heard Dave play this live in the early 90’s at Binghamton University and my girlfriend (who is not a big fan of jazz) was absolutely rapt with tears streaming down her face. He had such a brilliant touch and sensitivity to tone
I see your point John Doe...I do imagine myself with my friends and a good bottle of wine in your favorite bar ... and these folks...such a supreme moment in life !
SO good to see this in great quality. Great camera angles considering alot of stuff filmed in the sixties wasnt filmed with a musicians eye. I frikin love that song. 20 big ups to you for posting

Reading it 8 years later during lockdown, how sad and inaccessible it sounds..

if it's not one of the most beautiful saxophones I've ever heard, I don't know what is

It's his songs that made me wanted to know more about Jazz and his pieces are the best out there!

“Run like a river”. Great description.

I always had the impression that the songs from "Jazz Impressions of Japan" didn't sound like japanese music, but it is a good album anyway.
Felix Galeano Agreed.

Paul Desmond has enlightened my life.
Quel son magnifique pour un enregistrement de 1964 ! Paul Desmond précis et émouvant. Brubeck audacieux et revigorant.
this fucking tune puts the pieces of my sole together in music and I feel like a greater human for having heard it
I went to the shoe repairman and had my sole put together.
i can't believe this song puts your shoes together, what a song
Desmond is the star of this piece. Arguably the best improvised piece of saxophone ever performed. Musical delicacy.
Never forget
Koto song.
With the fullness
of your heart.
Minor blues with an eastern touch. I love this group on a minor blues.
Fantastic!!
Audrey by Paul Desmond as well. It is in such a minor blues that you can feel the whole musicality in himself. So beautiful!
Had the good fortune of watching Dave Brubeck live at the Barbican, London. Those were the days... I’m so grateful for today.
Desmond solo is one of the best alto solo i've ever heard. Beautiful, mystic.
Paul said "I use to rely on Dave's piano". He was so silly. He's the best saxophonist ❤️❤️❤️
5:18 - 5:25 God what a smooth transition 🙏🏼
delicacy
un jazz intemporel, hors du temps. A écouter et ré-écouter sans fin.
Brubeck's genius was endless and we are all much poorer for his loss.
The sound of jazz-heaven.Absolutely genius...
Dave is the king of transition. A complete mental/physical rollercoaster.

It's so nice to hear dave take a quiet contemplative solo.
YES!
This piece and Bluette are my favorite Brubeck-Desmond conspiracies.
Check out "audrey"
Tears come to my eyes each time I listen to this marvelous music . RIP Dave ! Thank you so much
Dave somehow gets the strangest sounds from a piano. Absolutely amazing!
Paul Desmond's sax sounding just as he wanted it... 'like a dry martini'
Gordons gin , ice lemmon and lime ,,,,,, hopefully the glass will never empty ? Just like this divine Koto Song ,,,, lol xx
Exceptional

No tengo palabras... les había oído pero, no había visto ningún video hasta hoy . Y si no me imagino que sería verlos en directo .¡ IRREPETIBLES!!👏👏👏
Paul Desmond...My misty poet...
I'm in the perfect mood for this, right now.
🎼🎶Dave Brubeck the great master of jazz piano 🎶a perfect virtuoso that I listen to for the love of music🎶🎵🎶
Great , a wonderful performance of Dave brubeck and Paul Desmond !! Unforgettable record, beautiful. Hebert Perez Garcia from The Netherlands
Intemporel. Ce morceau traverse le temps, toujours aussi mélodieux.
Try as I might, I can't listen to this without closing my eyes for a few seconds
I love saxophone, always, and also here, just in this song, I love piano more
I heard Dave play this live in the early 90’s at Binghamton University and my girlfriend (who is not a big fan of jazz) was absolutely rapt with tears streaming down her face. He had such a brilliant touch and sensitivity to tone
DiosDesmond, Paul Desmond was a genius, one of the greatest American musicians of all time, a gem of refinement and sublime poetic elegance.

ahhhh I wish I was your friend
.
.
.
obviously, because you are listening to this masterpiece!
take 5 is great and all that but this is like a whole different level. just goes to show the versatility of mr brubeck
I thought his playing in the middle of the keyboard suggested a mixture of bright warm and cold colours interplaying.
MasterPiece ! ! !
this as to be a very dreamy tune suitable for every one that loves and adores jazz ....wow ....
It is a pity Dave is not British he would have a Knighthood, well he's in heaven now, god bless him!!
I love the many versions versions of this song.
I see your point John Doe...I do imagine myself with my friends and a good bottle of wine in your favorite bar ... and these folks...such a supreme moment in life !
Such a beautiful sound, those rolling Arpeggios really accentuate the sound of the Hirajoshi scale.
They weave a beautiful six minutes.
Jeeessussss this is incredible.
This is not Music.IS TREASURE !!!! SPLENDID
So many American musicians I miss but I have to say both Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond are somewhere at the top of the list !

Inimaginable
those fingers not only hit the G minor, BUt also the G spot Rip Davie B
