the meaning behind this song: hozier has said many times that the three most human things we do are living, making love, and dying. the song itself was written as a sort of rebuttal to the catholic church’s views on sex and sexuality. though hozier isn’t gay, he is deeply passionate about human rights and this video was made in the height of tensions in russia regarding homosexuality where many were murdered. the song fits the video so well, i think. almost a “f*ck you” to the establishment, saying, “i will love this person regardless of what you say because being with them is the closest thing i feel to glory.”

Nadia Mascareno Yeah my mom about 12 years ago wanted to rejoin the Catholic Church, and even though she’s always been fairly liberal, she became more so when she had to accept I was atheist and LGBT. She really started to notice their stances on a lot of issues, and couldn’t bring herself to join again because it went against so many of her beliefs.

    • @whimsysmith2835
      @whimsysmith2835 3 роки тому +149

To me, personally the meaning is even simpler.
      God IS Love.
Everything sacred comes from being loved and venerated.
The most profane unGodly thing you can do is reject love, hate love, or try to destroy love.
There is no better thing to die for, there is no better thing to fight for and defend.
This song isn't profane- it is preaching the most sacred of truths.

@@whimsysmith2835 absolutely, but people who use their dogmatic beliefs as a podium to condemn others can inflict a lot of damage. I feel like Hozier needed to help the people understand that. Ya know, shed some light on the real situation that the church placed very intentionally in the dark. That was my take away when I read the article.

Interesting fact: My small, very conservative Texas town stopped playing this as soon as they found out what it was about. At first everyone was like, "Oh how sweet, he wants to go to church!" and then when he explained the lyrics and his dislike for the church no radio would play the song, they went from playing it every day for a couple of weeks to nothing. I think that's what makes me love this song even more, that even when it's not being played it still leaves a message.

I've never heard this song before. I had a very visceral reaction to the video and all I could think of was the Matthew Shepard case. At the time of his death in 1998 he was 21 years old.
The twins are 22 years old and had no reaction to two men expressing their love. Their response was in regard to the hate. They said they felt like *they* did something wrong. If that's not the most pure and perfect reaction, I don't know what is. We should all feel that.
And the Molotov cocktail was mentioned, a house being firebombed. In my eyes, I saw the person ready to throw it into a synagogue, a mosque, I thought of burning crosses. It's so amazing how music can make us happy or sad or nostalgic. Yet is has the ability to make us hurt or angry or propel us in to action. I'm thankful to the twins for bringing that back to me; music like life inspires us to take unknown paths.
Lately I've been on every hectic path, but the twins made me realize, I have to take time to listen to the music. I'm a Civil Rights Lawyer, I see a lot of evil in the world. With this channel, the people watching, commenting and being positive and overcoming stereotypes and grandmas thanking the twins for introducing them to Tupac, as they never would've listened to him, I am elated! I feel HOPE! I've never felt more connected to strangers. Thank you all for your comments, it's not only helping these young men but it's bringing joy to some having a harder 2020 due to challenges other than COVID. ❤ 🙏

This breaks my heart, when I was young my sister came out and being Catholic my mum called the priest who told me at aged 13 that I had to chose between the church or my sister, needless to say my sister won. My son is gay and lives with his fantastic partner but they still have to be careful as there is so much hate in the world. I raised both of my children to treat everyone with love and respect regardless of religion, colour, sexuality etc and proud to say they have carried this with them all their life. It takes so much more energy to hate and how boring would this world be if we were all the same. Love you guys xxx

Sad that Hozier was poorly catechized. There is so much truth, beauty, and mercy waiting in the Holy Catholic Church. That mortal men in the hierarchy have sinned is to be expected and does nothing to lessen the truth of what Christ established. We all just want to live on our own terms, not God's. I pray that Hozier and all others return home to the faith where they can find pardon and everlasting happiness.

I agree with comment, "there isn't a prevalence of anti-gay sentiment in Ireland. We were the first country in the world to vote to allow gay marriage" The Catholic Church has many failings but has so many strengths, it has its true beliefs which some disagree with, but they are not anti everything. Who is feeding the poor daily on the streets of Dublin, quietly, among many other things. They, feed the most, educates the most, cares for the most (inc. 3rd of all HIV cases and families) people in need in the world regardless of their religion. I know many who are Catholic in Ireland including me. Get the facts and share the love. AMDG

Too many of us stop listening to music at a certain stage of our lives, like we pick a hairdo and keep it for 60 years. Nothing illegal about either choice, but so much new enjoyment can be missed that way. Glad you are experiencing such a full range of music and sharing that range with others.

I'm so glad i did because i found you guys. ❤ I love y'all. The pandemic sucked for all of us but my mom had a stroke in October of 2020 which meant i had to move back home to Philly to take care of her and then my roommate in Florida died the day after Thanksgiving in 2020 while i was back home taking care of my mom... it was a really rough few months and i thank you both for your channel. You boys are the best!!!
I say you boys because my husband and I are parents of three adult boys and you are so much younger we could be your parents!!!
I had been watching you last evening and when my husband came to bed, (around 11p.m. ), I had him watch your reaction to More Than A Feeling, BOSTON.
It was his favorite band back when we was in high school.
He had even gone to a concert back in the day!
Oh boys what fun we had walking down memory lane, late last night, (we're old) ;) while enjoying songs from our youth, and your reaction to them.
He told me about the concert in Augusta Maine, and how the crowd was so tightly packed and excited to get in, the doors were pushed opened and the people working their, never got to take tickets.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!!
You boys were brought up well.
We can tell how polite, respectful, and just good people you are.
Keep that foundation in whatever and wherever you go.
Don't let "fame" get the better of you.
Keep enjoying some of the best music we are blessed to have been brought up with.
We are certainly enjoying your reactions to them.
We are going to have one of our boys help us with putting together songs from our youth on our cell phones so we can enjoy them once again.
May God bless and keep you boys.

This song is about the importance of love over hate. Love for another person should be seen as the preferred option over hate, whether from the church, the government or an individual. One of the messages in the video is that if the image of two men kissing offends you more than the image of threats or violence then you need to look at your own morals, beliefs and values and decide whether you want to change for a better future. A beautiful song, voice and music describing a scary reality for many.

    Hozier's Intention
In an interview with the Star Tribune, Hozier explains that his song is an attack on anti-homosexuality in the church, especially the Catholic church: “I’m not condemning the church or religion on the whole, just that one policy [the anti-same sex marriage policy], which seems so wrong to me. And obviously I’m not alone in thinking that.” According to an interview with The Cut, the song is also about homophobia in general and state oppression of homosexuals in Russia. Hozier meant the song and the music video to attack policies that value rules and prejudice over love and acceptance.
To make this point, "Take Me to Church's" music video shows a gay couple being hunted and tortured by a mob of masked and hooded men. Viewers, first, see the couple making out and, then, the mob torturing one of the men. In explaining the video in an interview with Fuse TV, Hozier says, "If you feel offended or disgusted by the image of two people kissing, if that's what it is, but you're more disgusted by that than the actual violence...I think you should take a look at your values, maybe." Through these images, Hozier wants to prove that being anti-gay is far worse than enjoying homosexual love.
As an appropriate summary of his viewpoint, Hozier says in his interview with The Cut that "[t]he song is about asserting yourself and reclaiming your humanity through an act of love. Turning your back on the theoretical thing, something that's not tangible, and choosing to worship or love something that is tangible and real - something that can be experienced.”
