I think even being Queer in the UK, a country which is pretty accepting, there will always be the fear that things could regress. What I appreciated about Hozier's video is that it didn't hold back at all - it said, "this is the reality for some people - this is what we are afraid of."

I am from a different generation, and I suspect that we older people have a much stronger reaction to the video than young adults like yourselves--much more triggering. I can't watch it without crying uncontrollably. I've seen it I don't know how many times, and that triggered response is still there. I had a friend, also gay, whose throat was slashed and the house set on fire to hide the evidence. He was just one of many who met the same fate.
There is a difference between checking yourself to adjust how much you can show and living with the realization that violence could come your way at any time without warning. What's in the box? Hopes and dreams that must be kept hidden because it's too dangerous to let them be known. There is a HUGE difference between privacy and secrecy--the conflict between physical desire and fear for physical safety. When I came out, it was because I felt I had an obligation to pay my social/political dues and because I felt that I had nothing left to lose. I was determined to make a difference, and I did.
Thanks for sharing your reaction with us. Your interaction with the video was intelligent and heartfelt. I appreciate it. Your friends must treasure you. And thanks for this opportunity for me to tell a little of my story. Lots of love.

I sobbed for days after first seeing this video.(yes, I did watch the video again and again) This really hit home for me being a survivor of multiple bashings between the late 70s and early 90s. I have since cut myself off from the world as much as possible and very selectively interact with only confirmed LGBT folk and work as necessary. This video really touched my heart and finally told the story of my life and that of my friends that are no longer with us due to these same actions they did not survive. I am a lucky one.

I live in India, where homosexual sex is decriminalized recently in 2018, and yet there is almost no awareness of what is LGBT. I just wish, 10 years down the road, when I'll be out in the world on my own, I would be able to live freely.

@@hustler212 I really don't know much at all about the dynamics of gay life in India. In the West, people who were attracted to the same sex were caught between the church, the state, and the psychiatrists. Are we sinners? Criminals? Mentally ill?
That conflict then became politicized. Homosexuals were linked to communism. Sure, the American gay rights movement was started by communists, literally, and it was organized as decentralized communist cells, but I don't think it necessarily has to be so in other places and at other times. Nevertheless, it was made more frightening by being called a threat to national security during the cold war.
All of this is to say, that Americans were well aware that there was such a thing as homosexuals. And because of the association with sin, crime, sickness, and subversion, they both feared and hated them.
And it took twenty years, even after organizing began, that enough gay people came to realize that there was nothing wrong with them and rebelled against their oppressors. That was Stonewall. And it was another thirty years before gay sex became legalized in the U.S.
But you see, all of this, from 1951 right up to the present day, was out in the open. A gay person might keep his own desires and activities secret, but the topic of homosexuality was fought over in public.
Stonewall really was the explosion that changed the shape and dynamics of the movement, and it can be understood only in the context of the American counterculture of the 1960s. Gay people who had organized, protested, and worked against racism and against the Vietnam war were not timid. They had become smart and tough through the work they had already been doing. They felt that they had nothing to lose, and that perception, that feeling, liberated them to be creative and daring. You put enough of that kind of people together in one place, and something is going to happen.
I don't know whether this model is appropriate for this historical moment in India. Maybe it is; maybe it isn't. Maybe there is a different way that gay people in India will devise to create space for their lives together more or less peaceably within Indian society. That is something for gay people in India to decide.
Best wishes to my gay brothers and sisters in India. I know you all are brave, strong, capable men and women. I wish you great success.

I think the box represents their love, that is why its burned in the end.
"No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
    Only then I am human
Only then I am clean" is the most human and raw phrase to ever writen in any song. It always gets me.
    This song is a masterpiece.

I had a friend/work colleague who was gay and mentioned something about having to be careful about holding his boyfriend's hand in public. I, being from Chicago, where we were both working, said "Well, surely you aren't worried about that nowadays." He pointed out to me that, being from Nevada/Arizona (conservative states), he had a different viewpoint growing up, and referenced the content of this video as being much more of a current representation than I would have thought. I hadn't seen this video prior to that conversation, but watched it, and it really hit home that this person who I worked with actually had to walk around being afraid of this kind of retaliation against his life-style. I am old enough to remember Matthew Shephard (from 1998), and I had been content to believe that things like that just didn't happen anymore. Sadly, that is a far too optimistic take on things.

I never really thought so deeply about this video until very recently. I recently came out as bi to my dad and sister and they were supportive but my mom is very homophobic and religious as well as my grandparents. I love my grandfather because he was one of the biggest influences in my life. It terrifies me to think of what would happen if the 3 of them or the rest of my family on my moms side were to discover who I am as well. My sister and father accept me but they don't understand so I don't mind talking to them about it because I don't fully understand yet either. I know my mom would probably kick me out if she knew. Its just comforting to know I'm not alone so thankyou. I love you guys for this❤

Unfortunately we had to cut this bit from our video for time, but thank you so much for raising it here, it’s such an important point. Just seeing two men in a video was powerful. The rest of it at the time was a bit triggering.
I'm lucky enough to live in South Australia. One of the 6 independently governing states that (with the 2 dependent territories) make up the Commonwealth of Australia. In 2017 the Commonwealth forced us to campaign for our right to marry when they made the country participate in a same sex marriage postal survey. The outcome of which was not legally binding. The amount of homophobia and violence that arose from the No campaigners was terrifying. I heard stories of attacks and verbal abuse. Our Newscorp controlled newspapers were heavily biased against us. Luckily we were surrounded by love. The 4 no protesters who came to protest our marriage equality rally were drowned out by our marching band and we had thousands of us and our supporters here in South Australian capital. I cannot imagine what it must be like for people who don't have that support around them.
Also as a side note. The legalisation of homosexuality in Australia was not just a one time thing. South Australia (SA) was the first to decriminalise homosexuality in 1975, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in 1976, Victoria (VIC) in 1980, the Northern Territory (NT) in 1983, New South Wales (NSW) in 1984, Western Australia (WA) in 1989, Queensland (QLD) in 1991 and Tasmania (TAS) in 1997.
The marriage equality survey result on the 15th November 2017 with 61.6% voting yes. Was followed by debate on the law which received Royal Assent on the 8th of December and became law at midnight and as such was effective from the 9th of December.

Thanks for sharing this Ryan. I remember reading about the referendum at the time. It’s awful how things like that bring out the worst in people and opens your eyes to the homophobia that still exists in modern societies. I’m not sure referendums on ‘issues’ like this are really the answer ?

      @ryanwalter9109 3 роки тому +1

@@AStoryWorthTelling the awkward thing is that legally they couldn't hold a referendum because it is something they could legislate on by themselves. A referendum here is only used to change the constitution. The Liberal (conservative) government (I know it confused me so much) we're hoping that it would be a no and would be dead in the water.
Luckily 61.6% of the responses (81% of eligible voters responded) were in favour of equality.

This video makes me bawl every time. It brings up emotions and memories.
I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s and while things weren’t usually this bad(like in the video) - it was still so bad. Sometimes, in the US it was very similar with people literally being beaten or killed but most of the time the violence was just simmering under the surface.
As much as the hate and fear was directed at anyone who seemed even slightly gay or just different - i do think it was the men or people who were viewed as male who were victimized the most. I suppose maybe only rivaled by anyone trans but few trans people would have been willing to be out. It was just too dangerous for many many people. My heart just shatters over and over with the beautiful people lost in so many different ways because of this kind of horrific ugliness.

The fact that you think the pronouns are about gender roles in his lyrics, just indicates how toxic this whole gender identity politics really is. Male and female archetypes within storytelling present symbolism for larger constructs such as creation. Where female represents chaos( creation/evolution being quite chaotic in its process, but immensely fruitful and nurturing) and male being order ( and creating construct in a world of chaos, to navigate and prosper. Ying/yang, balance. He talks of the goddess representing the chaos that order tries to suppress. She ( chaos) demands a sacrifice. If you want something to prosper, chaos will follow, and it will not be without sacrifice. People have forgotten the meaning of words. It's sad.

Well from my side of the tracks, the very straight side and I am Catholic. So this is what we see.
Please understand their is your private life and what you do with your private lives is your buisness until you step on others rights.
Christian's know thou shall not kill (murder) ecept in self defense which was addes later. So yeah we do not understand and do not like it with that said I also have to say the Church has come along ways over the years.
It use to be if a boy was abused in Church they just moved the priest and would not allow the law to step in. Now they no longer do this.
Over seas there are some pretty wicked things going on and I know in Russia and a few other places they will go after anyone who is LGBTQ + and sometimes leads to death.
And remember even in the UK right up to 1999 gays could be punished and 2010 they extended those rights a bit more.
Recent years however has reignited tensions throughout many places including Ireland and the UK.
Here in the U.S. it has been reignited due to how far it has been pushed. And once it started up as a teaching point in some schools parents started to complain. So Joe Biden and his lame admin told the FBI to treat any parent that disagrees as a domestic terrorist. And now they are pushing in certain states that if a parent is not willing to allow their children to transition either by meds or surgery then the child could be taken from those parents.
The LGBTQ + community is also pushing very hard and some of those demonstrators are extremely violent. We have even seen members of the LGBTQ community make physical threats and a call to arms. So who exactly is dangerous? A transgender walked into a Christian school and shot 6 people 3 of which were innocent children. Then you have the one who was caught before he put his plan in motion to do a few mass shootings. Then you have another in Uvalde who also was trying to deal with his sexuality.
In America you have a right to assemble and protest but in a peaceful manner and doesn't cause delays to people trying to go to work or whatever.
Then you have womens rights being stomped on so transgenders can compete. You also have that male who is I believe 18 ? Maybe 19? He told the school and they allowed him to shower with 3 15 or 14 year old girls.
We will say this outloud once again. Leave our children alone , so no more trans clubs, no more lap dances on our young children. And most certainly do not remove an American flag from a classroom and hang a pride flag and then have the students say their pledge of allegiance to it.
A full pride month is silly. Veterans who have their all only get a day.
No more pride flags at the same height or higher than the American flag.
Now this is mainly the LGBTQ demonstrators who are making it rough for those who live their private lives but do not flaunt it.
Do you see heterosexual parades? Lap dances? Do we take the kids to a straight strip club.
You are not asking for equal rights , you asking just for you and no one else. Look at Riley Gains being held hostage.
This country I most certain hope can heal itself with the next presidential administration.
Right now the country is separating either to move to a completely blue state or even more to red states.
The more this topic gets pushed the more Americans will fight back. And believe me this is a very serious situation as people are drawing a line in the sand.
Leave our kids alone. That what we want most of all
