I witnessed a guy buy 2 copies of Mario Kart 8 at a Best Buy without thinking about it. He was with a lady and I think they were getting gifts for his/their kid. They really looked like they didn't know much about games, he was like "oh man what should I get?" and the first thing he grabbed was 2 copies of Mario Kart and the lady just asked "why two??" and he simply said "well one for me and one for him". The box art was enough to sell it. I guess people just quickly recognize it as a good multiplayer even for parties of totally different ages and abilities.
I think Mario Kart 8 might be the most polished game Nintendo has ever made. It’s basically flawless. There’s a reason why it’s stuck around for 10 years.
As an avid Mario Kart fan, I unfortunately have to disagree. IMO 2 item slots, the lack of vehicle options, balance, course selection/design/visuals, all could be improved. Kind of a nitpick, but I also dislike that they removed fire-hopping. It was a fun mechanic.
The gravity may have not stood out to the player but it was immense from a design perspective, freeing their idea of how crazy of tracks they could make.
I hope they keep the _Mario_ in Mario Kart. There’s so much potential for tracks/characters with Mario games that have released since then without needing to bring in other IP. I want a Tostarenan driver, darn it!
I agree. It needs to stay Mario centric. It will ruin the uniqueness of both Mario Kart and Smash Bros. I like Mario Kart because I can choose quirky Mario characters.

I lined up at Nintendo NY for the release of MK8 for the Wii U. It was the first day I bought my Wii U (I got the bundle). It made me so happy. I remember that I played the demo of MK8 at Nintendo NY during e3 two years before it came out! Btw my favorite track is Mt. Wario
Mario Kart 8 holds a special place in our hearts. Its been a good run after nearly a decade. Love the soundtrack with the addition of live instruments. Still a best-selling game! The Nintendo Switch did well to boost Mario Kart 8 from a bottom tier console (Wii U), even if it has great memories. Imagine a live concert with the addition of playing Mario Kart live. Not including the DLC, Electrodrome, Big Blue and Mount Wario, there's nothing like it from course conception to being a bop.
Terry and King of fighters are very popular in Mexico and other Latin America countries because we had a lot of Neo-Geo Machines back in the 90s and early 2000s since they were so cheap, every corner store had a little "chispa" machine so there's way more fans of Terry Bogard than you might think. Maybe not in the US but the US is not the only market for Nintendo 😅
Anti-gravity for me was more about the creative track design than it was the mechanics. The mechanics were fine, but the resulting track designs were quite the spectacle.
I think that if they release the next Mario Kart as a launch title, they could also use the series' success up to this point almost like a marketing tool throughout the next system's life. Release a new cup at least once a year, at least one of the courses being based on one of the big titles that's coming out that year. And while they're at it, toss in a couple of characters from the big game releases from that year as well.
It’s difficult to pick a favorite track, but among the tracks that were on the WiiU version including DLC, I gravitate towards Wild Woods from the Crossing Cup. I also want to shout out the music for Mario Kart 8 especially Cloudtop Cruise that had a snippet of Mario Galaxy.
I want mario kart 9 to have a track builder that you can share online! Also, for third party, I think they should be ones that really feel nintendo. For example, Kirby and Banjo feel better to me than Joker.
The reason Mario Kart's online doesn't work in Smash is because Mario Kart can get away with very predictive positions on the screen. If you ever hit someone with a green shell and they wipe out but immediately zip back to what they were doing, it's because you hit them on your screen but not theirs. Most of the people you're looking at on your screen in Mario Kart are not accurately placed on the track, but that's fine outside of those fringe interactions like green shell snipes. It's essentially just really generous rollback netcode. Smash is WAY too precise to be able to do that. Most other fighting games do use rollback, but rollback in games that precise is INCREDIBLY resource-intensive. And doesn't really work as well in free for all party games. So Smash settles for a peer to peer setup where it just adapts by adding frames of input delay or fully dropping frames/freezing up instead of trying to predict people's movement and attacks. The Switch (and really any other Nintendo hardware) just doesn't have the power to do that for Smash on little Timmy's handheld Switch Lite playing on potato wifi in a free for all lobby.
These are very good points. It's also important to note that Smash is developed by Bandai Namco, whose fighting game division is notorious for being the last to adopt rollback netcode as a standard and also has the worst implementation of it. Rollback is also exponentially more difficult to implement in Smash vs other fighting games (which you already said is resource intensive) because Smash, as a platform fighter, has a degree of magnitude more possible velocities at every frame so its way harder to accurately guess where a player will go if their input is not received in time. And that's without even factoring in items being a potential factor. Rollback requires a large degree of determinism in a game, and Smash is largely non-deterministic. It's why you can't simply "patch rollback into Smash Ultimate" as easily as you could in a 2D fighter.
My favorite tracks are either Electrodrome or Dragon Driftway, but Mount Wario is definitely up there for sure! I'm pretty excited for the future of Mario Kart 9 because the possibilities seem kinf of endless. I have to imagine with how long the team has been working on it that we're in for something special & unexpected!
Back in May 2017 I was in senior year of high school and I will never forget how the face of the classmate sitting next to me at lunch lit up when, after watching me play MK8 on the switch for a few minutes, I asked him "would you like to play?" and handed him a joy-con. We had a blast. The magic of the hardware's portable multiplayer setup was a big part of it but MK8 is truly pick up and playable by anyone. It was so fun to play that for the last couple months of high school.
I love the Mercedes cars! Ever since it launched I use the retro Mercedes roadster and nothing else. The only other time someone was as cool as me in a race was when they were also driving a Mercedes

The game is still active, and it has a lot of users, but there are no new karts, gliders, drivers, or tracks being released. I have a feeling part of it may be due to it not being as successful as they maybe hoped - but the fact that it ended right as the last booster pack for MK8D was coming out makes me wonder if it was also so Nintendo could redirect resources from both games towards a new Mario Kart game that has to be being worked on...
N64 Rainbow Road is probably my favorite. The aesthetic, the length, and the more gentle curves make it a really fun track. It'd have been nice if it and Mt. Wario could loop for time trials.
I remember first playing Mario Kart 8 about 10 years ago when Nintendo used to do those Best Buy events usually a week or two after E3 happened. Then in 2014, got the game for the Wii U and played it with most of my family which everyone enjoyed it. Then in 2017, I did get Deluxe, but didn't really played it as much as I did with the Wii U version since I was more interested in the other Switch titles coming at the time. Then 5 years later, found myself playing the game often again cause of the DLC and I'll probably say my new favorite track in the game is definitely Yoshi's Island. I think if we get a new Mario Kart game for a new Nintendo console, I would like to see them expand more on the idea of tracks being changed up each lap like the Tour tracks did, maybe have them be more dynamic in a way.

I think the issue with Mario Kart Tour is the controls. I don't like touch controls, I want a controller. I don't care about this but I heard the payments in the app were high.

Did either of you two - especially you, Krysta, since Yoshi is one of your favourite Mario characters - have any influence over/input on the roster composition in the original _Mario Kart 8_ video game on the Nintendo Wii U and/or in the Nintendo Switch version while you two were still working at Nintendo?
Don't forget they also added in BOTW Link and the new master cycle in a free update to promote the game. Also the Mercedes cars are my favorite in the game, Metal Mario driving a GLA in Paris, who woulda thought

Man Nintendo absolutely slept with the insanity that went behind both Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii lmao Man it really puts you into perspective how Mario Kart 7 while great, went to being the dark horse because it needed to hard carry the 3DS in the early days so that Mario Kart 8 could walk, and eventually 8 Deluxe, Tour, and combined the Booster Course Pass to sprint.
What might happen is Mario Kart Tour is Mario Kart 9 That way next will be Mario Kart X which stands for 10 and Cross And Sonic will be one of those crossover characters
Mario Kart 8 truly is one of my all time favorite games. I will say I think Nintendo’s marketing strategy was flawed in focusing so much on the anti-gravity aspect. The idea of that gimmick genuinely had me apprehensive and ready to write the game off entirely, when I finally played it I was pleasantly surprised at how unintrusive it actually turned out to be in action.
I kinda fear that, as Mario Kart 10 will come, and we all expect the next system to have backwards compatibility (even if just for digital games), that game will be held back in sales by 8 Deluxe. I wonder if Nintendo will have what it takes to get a game that is naturally a Game as a Service into one. Especially considering the state of the Mario Sports games and Mario Party ones as well. I doubt a traditional 32 courses in 4 modes (including 200cc) will be enough at all. Or maybe we get insane luck and it feels more like Splatoon. However, Animal Crossing could've also become it in terms of updates and it wasn't (of course the pandemic got a hit on the team, usually nothing is that simple, but still).
Super Smash Bros to me sounds like it was always meant to be a big fighter that could include people outside of Nintendo Mario Kart... is at most, a Nintendo Kart thing... bringing in third party characters doesn't make sense
Naruto Storm 1, so cool, never would've taught you would say that! I'm a huge Naruto fan, the Storm series was the main reason why I wanted a PS§, ended up getting it late in 2011 with Storm 2. The games actually were advertised here in Europe as better looking than even the anime, and I absolutely agree, in my opinion, the Storm series is actually the best way to experience Naruto, evne just watching the cutscenes, is a faster and visually mor eimpressive way of watching Naruto. The new Connections game sucks though, sadly.
I'm still very salty about the quality of the Booster Course Pass. But that aside, I think MK8 is easily the best Mario Kart game. And it's one of the best games Nintendo ever made. I think the next Mario Kart will be MK10. Because MK9 is already out: it's Tour.

When Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was first announced for Switch, I said there would be no Mario Kart 9 for the console, since Nintendo has never done two MK games on the same console. I also agree Krysta, that the next system will have Mario Kart 9 (or 10 if Tour counts as the 9th game).
Hot take but Mario Kart isn't really as complex of a game to make compared to 3D Mario, 3D Zelda and 3D Metroid. Casual audiences don't care but I hope they think about the hardcore with the next title. Do something different.

Mario Kart 8 truly is one of my all time favorite games. I will say I think Nintendo’s marketing strategy was flawed in focusing so much on the anti-gravity aspect. The idea of that gimmick genuinely had me apprehensive and ready to write the game off entirely, when I finally played it I was pleasantly surprised at how unintrusive it actually turned out to be in action.

I kinda fear that, as Mario Kart 10 will come, and we all expect the next system to have backwards compatibility (even if just for digital games), that game will be held back in sales by 8 Deluxe.
I wonder if Nintendo will have what it takes to get a game that is naturally a Game as a Service into one. Especially considering the state of the Mario Sports games and Mario Party ones as well. I doubt a traditional 32 courses in 4 modes (including 200cc) will be enough at all.
Or maybe we get insane luck and it feels more like Splatoon. However, Animal Crossing could've also become it in terms of updates and it wasn't (of course the pandemic got a hit on the team, usually nothing is that simple, but still).
Super Smash Bros to me sounds like it was always meant to be a big fighter that could include people outside of Nintendo
Mario Kart... is at most, a Nintendo Kart thing... bringing in third party characters doesn't make sense

Naruto Storm 1, so cool, never would've taught you would say that! I'm a huge Naruto fan, the Storm series was the main reason why I wanted a PS§, ended up getting it late in 2011 with Storm 2.
The games actually were advertised here in Europe as better looking than even the anime, and I absolutely agree, in my opinion, the Storm series is actually the best way to experience Naruto, evne just watching the cutscenes, is a faster and visually mor eimpressive way of watching Naruto. The new Connections game sucks though, sadly.
I'm still very salty about the quality of the Booster Course Pass. But that aside, I think MK8 is easily the best Mario Kart game. And it's one of the best games Nintendo ever made.
I think the next Mario Kart will be MK10. Because MK9 is already out: it's Tour.

I'm glad my prediction was correct, it validates me lol. When Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was first announced for Switch, I said there would be no Mario Kart 9 for the console, since Nintendo has never done two MK games on the same console. I also agree Krysta, that the next system will have Mario Kart 9 (or 10 if Tour counts as the 9th game).

Hot take but Mario Kart isn't really as complex of a game to make compared to 3D Mario, 3D Zelda and 3D Metroid. Casual audiences don't care but I hope they think about the hardcore with the next title. Do something different.
