  • We are now in our window to plant the whole garden, so it is now go time. If we wait any longer it will be too late. This week we will be getting everything in the ground. Potatoes, onions, and much much more.
A couple of years ago, Marc excavated this part of the mountain to make garden beds and has been producing produce for some time to make a few g now. We hope this year's crops will be better than ever.

I grew up on a 40 acre orchard, and every spring from the time I can remember we picked rocks. Dad unloaded all those rocks along a dirt bank just like yours. after a couple of year we started stacking those rocks, and by the time Dad figured we had gotten most of those rock we had a 12 wall. The bonus was no erosion although us kids didn’t realize that until we were adults.

Planting peacefully with a noisy cow. I like doing mindless task, it is relaxing. Bet you were thinking how you were going to enjoy that first potato harvest. I don't know but I think mine will be baked .

On your potatoes if you’ll cut them in about a 1””-1 1/2” chunk at each eye you can make a lot more potatoes out of your seed potatoes. That’s the way I was taught and been doing it all my life with great results. You just need one eye per chunk and you’ll do great. Just trying to help you guys out with your resources. Enjoy both channels. Chris from western NC mountains

I agree we always cut them so the eyes would grow more. Never heard of use whole potatoes.

We typically do, but we had so many to plant. Many do as a whole potato and they say they get a better yield. Last year we cut ours and got small potatoes so we will see what difference this makes, it might not be much at all but we will see.

Marc you need to get a 1 or 2 bottom Plow instead of using a tiller, a plow will turn out the rocks allowing you to remove then by hand or Rockaway Landscape Rock Rake. Marc with your ability I am sure if you looked at one, you could build one yourself with junk yard steel that you could use on your tractor or a skid steer.
I also seen Rock removal buckets for Track hoes that allows you to sift out rocks from soil , and with your skills I know you can build one from Scrap steak from the junk yard, and get rid of the rocks that is killing your Tiller.

you really should cut the potatoes leaving 2 to 3 eyes per piece. It will take less potatoes to plant the area.

We usually would have but we knew we had way more sprouted potatoes than we had space. So we decided to just put them in whole.

That potato patch looks well good. When I lived near Oxford (UK) we always replanted the spuds that went to root out in the back garden and often got a fair return back. That patch of ground will give back more spuds then ever. Thanks for posting. Have a great day....

Hey guys I don't think it's a good idea to plant potatoes where the tomatoes were previously 🤔 they're closely related and suffer from the same blight diseases. I hope it turns out ok though. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 👍
