- I finally found my grail I've been wanting for awhile at a (relatively) reasonable price. It's no secret to someone who has seen a few of my videos that it's the 1967 psychedelic debut album from the band Kaleidoscope, "Tangerine Dream" and this particular pressing with all of the extras. Yes, it's no mystery and I put the album title right in the title of the video, no "grail" clickbait.

I heard this album a few months ago. My favorite was “Sky Children”. There is something about that song that I really enjoyed despite its repetitiveness. I also liked “Flight From Ashiya”. Those were the songs that stuck with me.

I don't think I have any "grails" per se, more like a few records I'd be happy to get.
That is also why, if an OG costs an arm and a leg, I'm happy to just get a reissue that is brand new and decent price.
If I really had to pick, one that's hard to find (otherwise it wouldn't be a grail, right?) I think the first album of Midnight Oil, the eponymous one with the black cover in an Australian pressing.
Finding a decent NM one and for a reasonable price is definitely a grail (ie almost impossible) but what a record...
Which mean I''ll probably end up buying the reissue box set which sometimes goes pretty low in price.
I'll still cherish my old copy of Red Sails in the Sunset (another amazing album by the band)
Nut there's something with the sound of that first album (raw, unfinished even) that makes me want to listen to ti on vinyl (I only have the cd)
I have a few "grails" like that, like some french artist that has never allowed repress of the albums (only cd came out later) etc...but again, I can leave without it's just nice to have to me

Thats realy great!! 👍 Congrats!!!🥳 the grails Im still looking for is The Fairest of them All from Dolly Parton (the only album Im missing of her 60-70s albums, which most were grails for me😊) and Bill Wilson with Ever Changing Minstrel and George Jones with The Grand Tour.
I have the Dolly Parton album, with some really great tawdry songs on it, and also the George Jones. Crazy how the prices have shot up on both of those.
Fairfield Parlour's From Home to Home is a favorite of mine, though I've had to make do with a digital copy.
I've picked up Fairfield Parlour many years ago and it's awesome. More proggy.
Oddly enough, I've not heard Kaleidescape.

I remember John Peel used to play this album in the late 80s, was bowled over by it, could never understand why it wasn't some massively lauded late 60s album..so much better than SF Sorrow or The Hangman's beautiful daughter, or others in the same category of supposed forgotten greats. It really needs to be used in a film so it gets the attention it deserves.
Wow, that is certainly a nice piece! I have the 2017 black vinyl version. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that your version has. No small lyrics insert and no signatures, I did get the single though. And my copy has the standard size cover.

Hi Chris again. I'm not a collector but have bought records and CDs for all of my 73 years. I have the CD of Kaleidoscope that you showed and White Lady and Fairfield Parlour's From Home to Home on mp3 download. Prompted by you I listened to them all yesterday and I now get why you wanted Tangerine Dream on vinyl. No extras, just the masterpiece for you to sit and listen to while holding the cover. Lucky you! Also, there's a 5CD book titled I Think I'm Going Weird of British psych from 1966 to 1968. Think you'd like it.
Those type of compilations are a great way to discover rare music.

I used to practice the murder track on drums! Every song is fantastic with the exception of A lesson perhaps

Tangerine dream was one of the first psych albums I’ve heard that really helped me dive deep into the genre, I adore it. My holy grail would be their follow up album, Faintly Blowing.
Hey Robert, one of my most recent buys too although mine is the 2023 release on orange splattered vinyl. There's no single and of course it's not signed like yours but like you, it's been on my wants list for ever so I'm really happy too. Well done matey, I'm really pleased for you.

My grail might be R.E.M.’s Murmur. Recently got all the IRS albums but still need Murmur. Hopefully it’ll get a reissue. Hope you get to Europe before WW3 breaks out… Congrats on the grail. I need to listen to it

Well, you asked. My grail is "Kulintang and Kudyapiq - Gong ensemble and two string lute among the Magindannon in Mindanao, Philippines". It was released by the University of the Philippines Ethnomusicology dept and recorded by Jose' Maceda who was the Philippines foremost Ethnomusicologist and Concrete music composer.
All his other recordings aren't hard to come by, but I've had this on my Discogs want list for four years now without any kind of offer.

I love that album, I have that cd you have with the first two albums.
I also have on cd, "Sky Children:The best of Kaleidoscope & Fairfield Parlor"
it comes with a cd and a dvd with seven videos from 1967 to 2017.
I also have the 2 cd set "White Faced Lady" & "From Home to Home"
which are two albums from Fairfield Parlor, but for some reason,
all of the artwork says Kaleidoscope.
This set is pretty hard to find.

OMG!!! I have been looking for the Kaleidoscope album! I stream it on Qobuz but it is definitely vinyl worthy! You are the only person I have ever seen that even knows wtf it is! NO ONE has it, as you know! I even looked in Europe while on a trip there last summer! Anyone that has Kaleidoscope records only have the California band of the same name. Good on you!!! I'm SUPER envious!!

read an article in PROG, expressing the view that the bands Tangerine Dream, and Kaleidoscope, were connected and gigged together during their respective pere-prog Psych days. apparently, both bands were influenced by Floyd, Crimso and The Nice. Cheers
I did the same thing as you did and recently splurged on a grail of mine: an OG Club Edition of Metallica’s Master of Puppets! While it’s a club edition, it’s just as good as a standard OG and is the best-sounding version to this day. It was in Near Mint condition so I couldn’t pass it up!

Hi Robert, Congratulations on finally getting the fantastic Kaleidoscope album, looks like an excellent package with all the groovy extras. I have both the Tangerine Dream and Faintly Blowing on the 5 Hours Back label, and they sound wonderful. I also recently got a reissue of Fairfield Parlour From Home to Home on the Future Shock label and that sounds pretty good too. With just about any album available online, it takes away the thrill of the hunt so to speak, but as you said, these albums are not easy to find in record stores in the US.

In your confusion with the vertical and the horizontal, at least you didn't veer into using the word heighth. So many people say that word and it is NOT a word. "Height" is a word; not heigth. Every time you hear someone use the word heighth, you are looking at a person who has probably never in their life, read a book. AC/DC is an appropriate lp to use for the size comparison, as they are all about the vertical.They are about the lower end of the vertical however. The place where a snowball wouldn't stand a chance. Purgatory is more the vertical.
My holy grail is the Glazunov Saxophone Concerto with Arthur Schnabel on piano, and Charles Mingus on bass. In the background as usual.. In this instance, in the bachground of a Symphony Orchestra. A first, I think! Even with all the bombastic blaring of horns, the growl of the violas and Schabel pounding out the notes over a close miked saxophone; your ear is drawn to Mingus. Joni Mitchell must have been similarly drawn in. She named one of her albums after him; Mingus. Deep people love Mingus, even though he is deep in the mix; usually way way back. Perhaps that's his attraction and charm. He's not showy. You have to listen for him. But if you really listen, you can hear him playing. Does listening so hard to hear Mingus, make you miss the music? Yes; but who cares. It's Charles Mingus.
Such a legend. I wonder if his friends ever dared to refer to him as Chuck?
Nice score! The first time I heard it it reminded me of Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but the more I listened to it the more it sounded like its own thing. Need to give it another stream soon. Not sure I'm willing to spend the bread for a vinyl copy.
