This is actually everything I hate about Android or similar platforms, and why I love FOSS platforms so much. You can't download a calculator app these days or a wallpaper app without it having a subscription or a million ads on Google Play Store, when I look up apps for my Linux desktop yes I might get fewer results but the app I get will simply do what I need and get out of my way. We should create a culture around donating to projects we enjoy using not paywall everything in the way that somehow your average dev still doesn't get a share of profits.
Android is innocent. You have fdroid and Izzy. Gapps on Android is the problem. And apps that ask for gapps are the disease. I have a degoogled phone with microg to use some apps and have notifications (unfortunately, I need some non foss apps for work and life).

Take it from a web dev - Their app is so absolutely easy to develop and deploy, you could hire a guy to do it for you in 1-2 days - And it would actually scale on iPads (it's pixelated as hell on mine). What's even funnier is that their API was so terribly secured, I managed to get access to every single "premium" image for free. It's a disaster.
The impression I've got of MKBHD is that he's a brand-safe and reliable influencer for the big tech companies. Feels more at home in 2014. Nowadays, I can't stand that combination of consumerism and Silicon Valley tech optimism.
My guess is that he was approached by the app developer and asked to "put his face on" this app in exchange for a commission or whatever. Easiest buck in the world so he signed not caring about what it does and this is just the result of it. It's very similar to how sportsball people advertise their supposed brand of sportswear while they're not required to give the slightest f-ck about how its made, is it made with quality or whatever. The celeb gets its cut, the maker gets its boost in sales and the fool and his fortune are soon parted.

Never liked his videos - they were mostly advertisements of products he 'reviewed'. I have found Michael Fisher / Geekyranjit (an Indian channel) to be far more reliable when coming to reviewing a product.

Almost 100% agree with you. Also thanks for the alternatives. But MKBHD taking 50% seems fair. Most employers take more than 50%. UA-cam and Valve were not in the same position as an artist being distributed through a WIDELY known brand. Valve and UA-cam were at zero and had to make people come to them, not the other way around. It makes sense because more loss per customer BUT higher volume = lower loss per customer BUT low volume. MKBHD has huge distribution and is offering it for 50%.
I've personally used the Amoled Backgrounds subreddit as my go to wallpaper stop for my phones for years lmao. Marques is extremely out of touch and a hack.
You completely missed the value of a curated gallery that also supports the creators. I worked with a few and having less better quality stuff will always beat swimming through a see of garbage. The price tho? It's probably a non issue for people that already spent a grand on the phone, so is the revshare split at this volume. The rest of the points, especially about privacy - solid.

Personally I just never thought the guy was really good. Just a guy who knew how to shoot a video and maybe learn about new tech. But other than that I would never consider him for proper reviews of a product. He was always at least the last 6-8 years just a guy to more advertise products for big companies. Don't most androids come with some sort of wallpaper app out of the box? I don't use any of those, but I've seen wallpapers rotate when setting up phones for my family. I even remember sometimes choosing the topics and images to rotate... Feels weird to charge so much for such basic app, especially coming from him after saying that his fans been asking for wallpapers he uses. Like, instead of just giving out a fine selection of wallpapers for free he chose to make an app and charge unusually high amount to people that already support him. I would understand if some big corpo leech did this, but a youtuber doing this to his audience? Weird, man.
You can have a wallpaper app that cycles through your wallpapers for free, or you can pay $50 to have a wallpaper app that will cycle through Marques Brownlee's wallpapers, so you won't have to ask him where he got his wallpaper from again.

‘Abstruct’ is probably my favourite app for wallpapers. Everything on that app is made by a single artist who also designs wallpapers for oneplus
Almost 100% agree with you. Also thanks for the alternatives. But MKBHD taking 50% seems fair. Most employers take more than 50%. UA-cam and Valve were not in the same position as an artist being distributed through a WIDELY known brand. Valve and UA-cam were at zero and had to make people come to them, not the other way around. It makes sense because more loss per customer BUT higher volume = lower loss per customer BUT low volume. MKBHD has huge distribution and is offering it for 50%.
I've personally used the Amoled Backgrounds subreddit as my go to wallpaper stop for my phones for years lmao.

You completely missed the value of a curated gallery that also supports the creators. I worked with a few and having less better quality stuff will always beat swimming through a see of garbage. The price tho? It's probably a non issue for people that already spent a grand on the phone, so is the revshare split at this volume. The rest of the points, especially about privacy - solid.
@The Hated One you are still a little behind the curve (if you didnt make a video on this already): any wallpaper (unless really common and shared by mani people with the same exact color coding) is potentially deanonymizing. Look into it ;-)

you do know an ad blocker no more ad games right? as seen in other videos a pi hole or such means just wallpaper is all you see. also paid version is supposedly to support over 50+ artists etc. which you stated at start is good to support artists etc. yes 50 might be to much but who decides this the user. simply do not pay and get. ad blocker at app lvl done then no support to artists. uh me for one don't need this app thingy bc my wallpaper is to basic lol

Personally I just never thought the guy was really good. Just a guy who knew how to shoot a video and maybe learn about new tech. But other than that I would never consider him for proper reviews of a product. He was always at least the last 6-8 years just a guy to more advertise products for big companies. Don't most androids come with some sort of wallpaper app out of the box? I don't use any of those, but I've seen wallpapers rotate when setting up phones for my family. I even remember sometimes choosing the topics and images to rotate... Feels weird to charge so much for such basic app, especially coming from him after saying that his fans been asking for wallpapers he uses. Like, instead of just giving out a fine selection of wallpapers for free he chose to make an app and charge unusually high amount to people that already support him. I would understand if some big corpo leech did this, but a youtuber doing this to his audience? Weird, man.
You can have a wallpaper app that cycles through your wallpapers for free, or you can pay $50 to have a wallpaper app that will cycle through Marques Brownlee's wallpapers, so you won't have to ask him where he got his wallpaper from again.
