I'm just a beginner in this technique and for me personally you are a big help. The way you explained all the things here is very simple for anyone. Thank you! You're doing a great job!
thanks so much for all your videos! I'm learning to tattoo at home with the help of a mentor on a very now and then basis since my full time job is much too demanding to go through a typical apprenticeship and all your videos are so helpful to me while developing my techniques.
Yes I’m with you on that this is the hands down best stipple shading tutorial video by far and there’s atleast 100 and there not as informative and best well explained like such above
Thanks again jono I am just about to try this technique for the first time and you have given me a great insight keep up your awesome content and thanks for all your time and effort all the best wayne from manchester uk
I caught in the vid you have a soft spot for coil machines and me also. I tend to refer to them as "Old Faithful" due to the wide range of adjustments you are able to make to them to accommodate your clients skin, I'm always going back to using them. Maybe it's my O.C.D kicking in but I make sure to my best ability that my equipment is exactly sounding, hitting and running the way it should be for what I'm doing...well with coils it's easier to spend time getting your gun right for the session ahead. The adjustment combo you can do is endless almost, and in the end knowimg and being confident in your equipment means alot and clients can see if you are or not. Tattooing is LIFE, not a way of life, for me and I enjoy all of it
Thanks so much for this, I’m an ER nurse and want to learn tattooing, my kids have donated their skin so I’ve been developing my skill. These videos have been great for me.
Been watching you buddy and have given me some great advice along my journey since I found you ,I started training 2 years ago on fake skin and took the plunge just before Christmas last on my skin with tribal , feather work and work my way up to some stars with stipple which have faded on skin but not on fake skin so this video is a massive help cheers buddy 🤛
Man kudos! I just started on a basic rotary machine after using homemade ones for years, including homemade needles and ink. It so much easier and better control I gotta be more careful because it more tedious than the brute force of a rugged homemade gun and needle lol.
Nice video Jono bud. I ordered some practice skin so I can get this technique down before I try it on da wife....lol.. Should be fun both ways... Thanks again bud.
Awesome stuff, totally agree with the less is more part too... stipple shade is such a cool techinique especially when combined with sth contrasting like thick lines or empty space.
Thank you for your videos! I am learning my butt off over here, the style I have been driving myself towards is neo-traditional, stipple shading will be a staple 👌🏼💜
Thank you for your great quality content. I already feel I learned a lot from you even though I only watched like 3 of your videos. Keep up the great work
Nice worked really good always wondered how to get this I started low volts like 4 and work up settled at 6 worked gd on fake skin tried different shades of greywash the straight black was the best 👌
You could do. It would be better to use a machine setup for shading as shaders tend to have thinner springs and therefore have more ‘give’ than a liner. But you can definitely still achieve this with a liner.
@@JonoSmithTattoo thanks for the info. I've only been able to find one other video of this technique being done with a coil machine and the only detail given was that it was a mid liner which, is a term I've never heard of before since my mentor only taught me traditional setups. A liner, a shader and a color packer.
Thank you for the information!! For the rotary pen you mention "just turn down the volt" and visible is 10 volts in the video...isn't that pretty high or indeed the correct way?
Thanks for the tips I was doing it like 50% correct lol, I was noticing that my shading had no gray value it was all of the same tone, now I know Thanks
You’re freaking awesome, bro! I really enjoy your extremely helpful and well done tutorials and tips! Thanks for all your efforts!! I was wondering if there was a faster way to go about stippling and now I know (I was just doing dot by dot “quickly.”) 😅 took 4 hours to do a rose that way, but it’s also because I love doing wild stuff with color and that takes some time and thought in that process💖
Thanks for the awesome feedback! Yeah that’s a long time for stipple shade 🤣 But as long as you’re enjoying the process that’s the main thing. Thanks for watching!
@JonoSmith this video was soo helpful & informative for me 🙏🏼 I thank you so much. Today I actually did my first attempt at stipple shading/pepper shading on a big piece. It came out great but it was a whole new ball game. I was learning as I went because I had to be analyzing & adjusting as I went. It also took allot out of me physically & mentally. But watching this video answered allot of questions I needed answers for after experiencing that today.
Great tutorial! Do you use any grey washes for different tones or you just use pure black and run over the same spot to make it darker? Thanks bro, keep up the good work!
Man you are amazing! I was always told that you can't stipple with coil machines but I see why it's so important to learn how to tune your machine, thank you!
I know what you mean about people over doing the white highlights. I see it all the time with art and people overdoing the jelly roll highlights lol I have a question, how do you control the needle depth while doing this technique. I have been practicing and every once in a while I go too deep and snag the practice skin. I also wonder if you are just scratching the surface of the skin will it stay for long? I was thinking that the middle part would stay because it’s deep enough but the entry and exit would fall out since it’s too shallow? Thanks so much for your videos!
You’re absolutely right with the needle depth, the center of the movement will naturally be slightly deeper so it’s best to make sure you get an even coverage when you can by moving around. If your needle is snagging try retracting it into the tip slightly and this will solve it. Thanks for watching!
@@JonoSmithTattoo Hey Jono, I just watched!! amazing video, I love the fact that you use CPS to explain, and talking about this, what CPS do you use for smooth shading? and if is possible to choose, what stroke?!

So, would I take a machine already setup as a liner, turn back the contact screw and reduce the voltage to pull off this effect?
You could do. It would be better to use a machine setup for shading as shaders tend to have thinner springs and therefore have more ‘give’ than a liner. But you can definitely still achieve this with a liner.

In regards to hit and bog, my spectra flux has egive, 0-5. So for bog, would I want softer hit, or harder hit?
You’d want a softer hit for the machine to bog.

Why couldn't you use a 9RL? Does the effect not work as well with bigger dots?
