  • Have you ever thought about doing the stipple, whip, pepper shading effect?
In this video I share with you MY approach in which I take to achieve the desired results I seek upon doing a tattoo that requires me to use to the stipple, whip, pepper shading effect.
Although the technique will be the same idea for us all the technicality aspect of stippling I feel would vary from artist to artist. Most tattooist will apply the motions & flow of the tattoo differently but the idea would still be there.
I like to use a 12 or 10 03-RL when shading with the stipple approach just because I can really dial in and put the ink in where I need with accuracy. I have heard and seen others use a tight 5Rl as well but this would be personal preference.
This is not by any means right or wrong but more so the way that I go about applying this sort of technique.
The idea of stippling, pepper, and whip shading is stacking layers of dots over one another to create the desired effects, in a nutshell.
When approaching tattoos with the pepper shading effect we'd want to make certain we know what we are doing as it can be easy to damage the skin if you are not used to using this sort of approach.
I will list the timestamps below for you so you can easily navigate to a section you want to watch or re-watch.

I just got my first tattoo kit a few days ago ^-^ I already have 4 pieces of work. But 2 I'm a bit proud of. I need help, how much does it eventually cose to do the apprenticeship. My family is very poor and live in the middle of nowhere so I wanted to take my 14 years of drawing and art experience to tattooing which is something I've wanted to do for awhile because my other dreams cost too much really, and hopefully pursue this one to the fullest. I just turned 21, and I wanted to start as early as possible because my mom is terminally ill and I want to be able to help out.

Hey! You’re welcome. Thank you for the support and feedback!
Yes when I approach stippling, whip, dot, pepper, shading type of tattooing I always am running at about 5-6 volts. Depending on the machine I run at about 5.5 volts. I like a soft hit when I approach this tattooing technique.

I have a question though. My cheyenne hawk thunder can range from 5 to 12 volt. I Have seen and read people use 3 to 5 volts for pepper shading as well, but as I understand from your video, 5 volt is good as well?

Thank you so much Daniel! I’m just beginning my apprenticeship and you are helping me excel! Do you have any tips for putting stencils on the fake skin? I’m told that it just won’t work and not to try and put one on….

Thank you for your support and feedback it means a lot to me!
Congratulations on your apprenticeship! You will do great !
Putting stencils on fake skin can be super super tricky. For me, It really depends on the felt we are using. Some felts of fake skins require different treatments and changes a bit in the process. Rubber felt skins are typically quicker to dry but harder to work with because they smudge like no tomorrow.
Silicone felts are good but require more time to sit and rest so the stencil sticks to the skin.
In this video I talk more about what I’ve mentioned and I show you how I go about applying stencils to fake skins

Thank you so much for your video it really helped me understand the techniques I was having such a hard time before! I was just wondering what you are using to wipe away the excess ink?? I know the smudging on the skin could be down to the fake skin itself but honestly I don’t have any products to get the excess ink off and am currently using face cream! Lol! Any product suggestions would be helpful as I am just starting to build up my kit.

I feel we can approach tattooing many ways, I’ve seen prestigious artists use odd motions for textures, for effects and more. Each always had their own way of approaching things is what I’ve noticed.
What I am saying is we can combine different pressures, with techniques, different strokes, different inks, etc to create our tattoos. I’m always looking for new ways to get new textures and skill sets with tattooing under my belt.

Hi, I have a simple question that's been hard to answer... Is stippling (dotwork), whip shading, and pepper shading different from each other? Or are they just different synonyms for the same technique? I mean, does the term vary the effects or the hand movements? I've found several conflicting views on the matter and am even more confused now. Thank you in advance!

This is a great question I feel others are asking as well.
I feel this method would work with colors but I think the consistency of the pigment would also be a variable to consider upon applying the stipple approach. I don’t feel like the application and concept would change but more so we would probably adjust the hand motions accordingly per each pigment/color.

    • @DanielYuck
      @DanielYuck  3 роки тому +2

Thank you for your kind feedback and support! It means a lot to me.
I feel the benefit of utilizing the stipple approach would be the textures that the stipple approach provides. At a distance the tattoo reads as smooth, but when we get up close and personal the dots are apparent and have a textured look to them.
Not only that but when stipples are used sparingly it can give the tattoo that extra pizazz that was needed.
However which shading looks best to each person will vary as this is fully subjective.
