- In 1996, Bob Jimenez of UPN 13 News, Los Angeles interviewed the creators of the Mortal Kombat series about video game violence and its effects on children.
At the end, "Of course we're gonna draw line". Meanwhile 19 years later Mortal kombat X.
Draw a line.... 300 years away from us.
@@KayvK LOl what line.. I saw no LINE... (other dude) umm sir we crossed a line 12 years ago but you didnt notice it. OH who cares then its over!
@Liquid Snake damn....
Mk11
😂😂😂 I played mk in the 90s and mk 11 now. Mk 11 has stuff in it that I like but Im definitely like “now that is disgusting!” But long story short if you don’t like it don’t buy it.
I love how Ed ignored the MK4 question. He was always good about not leaking too much info on his products.
Why the f*** would you buy 18+ game for your kids
And you blame the developer for the content?
Poor Ed Boon i feel sorry for the shit he went through for all of this. He's a true rebel made one of the best fighting games of all time and went through hell and back for it!
***** seriously he's a survivor not only did he survive this shit, but he also survide John leaving, and the shitty 3D mk games.
+chris succee Oh god, THOSE mk games....
@@nonfinale685 shitty? they were most enjoyable, at least Deception and Armageddon. I would say MKX is shitty.
Chris Succee Why John leave?
@@HardKore5250 to start his own game company (which failed quick).
It's sad to see that decades later the news and so called parents still doing the same stupid shit and the game was never aim for kids and the parents shouldn't blame the developers they should look into a mirror because the failure is all theirs
@@DippingNoodlesWashHere Which was mostly created cuz of the OG MK
Caster Indictates 'there's violence in the news' - so they're contributing. Hhahaah
"Why do kids need more violence?"
Cuz that shit's gonna sell, Bob!
Alright Mr Boon, Mr Tobias, you're very young guys....
Boon and Tobias: Is he coming onto us?
😂😂😂😂
Ed is right! I remember playing MK 1 2 and 3 for the genesis when I was only 5 years old and I NEVER used violence in real life or thought killing was ok. People try to blame video games and movies for all the bad stuff in the world!
haha the reporter at the end was all like "You're young guys. I like your thick eyebrows Ed, maybe you can show me some "finishing moves" lol
"Two very young, strapping, handsome, guys"
@1:32 if I were Ed, I would say "oh, so all these mediums have violence and WE are the ones that have to stop? How about YOU stop showing violence on the news since the news is so concerned about the children". And I know that answer might come off wrong, but I legit got pissed hearing that ignorant question.
Draw the line? Hahaha mortal kombat x is calling
lol
And mk11
.ed BOON .john TOBIAS how the hell am I just now finding this out NOOB SAIBOT
Give the Anchor some credit he admitted there is violence in everything else not just video games.
If this was originally a movie and not a video game then parents wouldn`t give a f*ck.
He asks questions and he doesn't listen, at all.
No time for that, I figure.
Violently talking over them
_“Of course we’re gonna draw the line.”_
🤣🤣🤣 #TheLiesYouTell Ed Boon!
"There's no learning value whatsoever, it's just entertainment."
AMEN~!!!
They're like the kids that got in trouble and now are on the principal's office.
6 mortal kombats later, FUCK YOU PAST YOU CANT STOP FUTURE!
lol i like how ed boon says that there will be a line to how violent it gets when the new one just came out and its arguably the most graphic and gruesome MK of them all
"You're very young guys" What was the relevance of that? Yes, they're very young guys whose combined income from these games could probably have bought the entire UPN network.
Mortal Kombat 2 best fighting game ever miss the arcade days
LOL
"will you draw the line?"
"of course"
i love his smirk of "fuck you"
Oh my God. It's like getting called into the principal's office!!!
I was a kid when Mortal Kombat first came out. I admit I was infatuated with it because of the adult content that it had in it; The blood, the violence, the fatalities, all those factors are what made the game of what it is. It was around that time the people realize that the game itself was so violent the kids it spark up a huge controversy of whether they should continue selling the game or pull it from the shelves. I even remember that they were stupid out there that committed violent acts or sometimes murder and said they got the idea from Mortal Kombat. Because of that, Mortal Kombat became the Scapegoat of every of juvenile's bad decision. Sounds like bullshit right???? I already knew that is was just a game and that was it. I never took further than what it was. I'm glad that everyone has stop jumping on Ed Boon and John Tobias for there creation. Maybe there are more games out there that are getting more attention, I don't know. Who cares!!! Just play the game!!
"You're very young guys, huh? You wanna hang out later?"
News Guy: "You see a lot of violence on the news."
0:08
Dang, that interviewer tried to throw them some curveballs, but they handled that like a couple of pros.
It still aggrivates me to this day that the controversy about Mortal Kombat's blood and fatallites steemed from a misunderstanding caused by parents, teachers and others who never played the game
Sure there is a line haha!
I hope critics now a days realize that kids know the difference between seeing someone get killed in a game or movie and seeing someone actually get killed right in front of them.
Dang, was hoping this was going to be about the dial-a-combo mechanic
Aparently the line was down the middle of a corpse after Noob Saibot and his shadow both grab a leg. :P
Bob: “Alright, Mr. Boon, Mr. Tobias, you’re very young guy, huh?”
Ed/John: “Yeah.” 🙂😁
*Later* Ed/John: 🤨🤨
@VikutaaChyaaruzu You may be right, but you're off topic.
Here's one for you:
"yeah, but Street Fighter isn't as good visually as MK is".
Lol if they saw mk9 they'd shit their pants
Now mk11
Anyone else have no audio on this video? I thought it was just my computer, but all other videos work here.
@yoe91 completely agree, I find it annoying how older people find shows/movies like The Sopranos, Scarface, The godfather, etc. to be masterpieces (which they are) but disregard that there is violence and malevolence in those movies/shows,seems hypocritical to me, some games (just like movies) have a good story with the gore, others have mindless, but fun (as it's intended to be) killing which just serves as entertainment, besides...older people hate not being in the loop of video games imo
i got to say...you're right.there are videogames and movies for everyone.not just for a kind of people.
"sure were gonna draw the line" is what he said "no were fucking not" is what he thought and now were at mortal kombat 9 with another on the way
Here we are 28 years later. Still pushing strong as one of the worlds most popular fighting games
damn
MK3 violence is nothing compared to what we have today =]
I'm under the assumption the studio was underneath the building on La Brea.
"We see kids looking at increasingly violent movies, they see violence on the news..."
Right there he should have shut his mouth.
Boon and Tobias backwords makes my favorite character Noob Saibot
I'm playing mk1 right now!!! Thanks plug and play!
I just learned this: In MK3 there is a character named Noob Saibot. Tobias spelled backwards is Saibot and Boon spelled backwards is Noob. They must've really liked this character if they named it after themselves.
News people have almost always had an agenda. If you don't like the product, don't consume the product. Parents have to parent.
Boon said there's a point where he'd draw a line in video game violence; obviously having two guys split a human being in half crotch up, while the victim is still alive, like a Thanksgiving wishbone is not that line yet.
@4everSolidSnake Yeah man. Basically, the point is "do you feel the same way about blood on the screen as you do in real life ?"
No joke, I JUST came back from a blood test, they filled up 7 tubes off my veins, felt like I was going to die. But MK fatalities leave me indifferent, as it does all kids. No controversy here.
@Tikada22 no, he said "yep, with all that blood flying there" or something about those lines.
Nothing about the characters
@91aztecking He did say they will draw a line, but he never said what that line was or that they crossed it yet. He was also not under oath here. And even if he was, people often do what they said they wouldn't do after it's been 10-20 years since that promise. Times change.
the reporter is just doing his job, leave him alone. But his points aren't valid anyways, if a kid changes his behavior because of MK that means he's sick to start with and should look at his environment (school, friends, parents/family) for cause of symptoms. Metal music, MK don't make you evil, don't make you violent like it is, it's just artistic expression. I keep that the most harmful, vivid type of art is tragedy for it deals with very painful things and is the most likely to have a person cry and feel real pain from experiencing mere fiction. A sad song can make you depressed, physiologically. Not a brutal death metal song - not ripping Scorpion's head off. Nobody has the stats, but I'd guess from common sense about 99.999% of the kids playing this have turned out completely healthy as they've grown into adults.
If a kid is tormented/has nightmares with MK imagery working his subconscious, he should stop. But that's no more harm than trauma from watching the news, any movie, cartoon, or smt real in life. That's ultra, ultra sensitive individuals and they need shelter.
Lol if they saw MKX they would shit their pants
@sannamy Wait, so the guys that gave us Noob "Make a Wish" Saibot and Kung "I Saw You" Lao actually think there are fatality ideas that go too far?
@yoe91 good point on the visuals, I can easily feel indifferent to an exaggerated character like a big gears of war guy, or an ice ninja in mortal kombat getting chopped in half, I suppose when every game looks like L.A. noire or Heavy Rain with brutal violence is when i'll cringe a little, but like you said, still fiction, look at the Saw movies or any other horror movie, still fiction, maybe in our eyes, but people will always complain...people should just have a little more trust in us!
"What do kids learn from this?"
What kind of question is THAT?!! The game is Mortal Kombat, not Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego!
AWKWARD interview....
Violence itself isn't to blame.
e.g.: Someone yelling at someone is "violent" to some extent.
Then there's a few levels above: i.e. ripping the torso off, head off, burning body...etc.
But MK doesn't desensitize; we still find it horrible in real life to see a dead body.
And it never goes beyond the "limit". That limit is pretty well defined after all: no incest/rape/pedophilia/actual torture etc...
and lol at "yep that was blood flying there"
Look at my nigga Noob Saibot.....
lol I wonder how this news reporter is reacting to the mortal kombat 9 trailer XD
ed boon and john tobias owned this reporter
Both boon and Tobias remind me of Matt stone and trey Parker of South Park, pushing limits and causing many people to be concerned haha
No, because they don't give a fuck what society thinks. I will always love MK and it hasn't "warped" me when I was younger. These products test parenting skills for the better.
you know what's more violent than video games .. a drunk uncle or father..
Boon Tobias > Noob Saibot
Anyone think Ed sounds a bit different than how he sounds these days in terms of voice
Adults were way too sensitive in the 80s and 90s.
And not now??
Lord, they bitch about anything nowadays.
Violent games we're the 50s rock n, roll of the 90s
damn thats a lot of quarters XD those arcades must have been filled to the point of bursting XD
See, that's an improper representation of the game: Nobody uses Sindel.
"your very young guys, hm" LOL
Back in the day, I thought these guys we're the coolest people in the world.
Fantastically reasonable well worded replies.
The blood and violence can be turned off with the flick of the dips.
Was I the only one more startled by Ed Boons eyebrows?
The Parent Groups and Reproters from the 90s would have rioted in the streets at the sight of games like Grand Theft Auto, the Call of Duty Series, MK9, God of War, Gears of War, Bioshock (the moral choice system) Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead
i remember these days
Years later, MK9....no line has been drawn -:) MKFORLIFE
Yep. He actually originally appeared in MK2.
oh and they could run in previous MK too, i mean those ones, which was before MK4...all 2d mks...all of them had run button ...
Yeah they're gonna draw the line. HAhaha Oh man that was awesome right at the end there. Ed Boon is my favorite individual.
they draw the line? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-
Noob Saibot-Boon&Tobias
I hope Mortal Kombat 9 generates this kind of controversy again.
And from the what i've seen so far in the game, it sure looks like it. =D
wow, watching the news is far more gruesome and depressing than any game.
I wonder if Mr Jimenez has seen MK 9 gameplay
I would have most likely answered if I were in their position: If kids or whoever plays violent games like mortal kombat isn't smart enough as to know it is fiction and only a videogame and that your life keeps going after you're done playing you better stay away from any kind of framed construction that displays images(monitors)
its like smoking...when you smoke too much sooner or later your body starts to feel uncomfortable about it, that you further want to belch when you see a pack of cigarettes...the same with violent games...
...but to tell you honestly i still think ts kind of personal thing...if you arent out of your mind and can control yourself, calm and concentrated...well...then no violent game can make you out of your mind...
"You're very young guys." WTF? That was the most pathetic attempt at a witch-hunt newscast I've ever seen.
What year was this interview taken, someone please let know cuz I need the information for school, writing a paper about MK.
he asked if they would ever draw the line...... i wonder if that guy has seen clips of MK9 yet lol
Ed Boon and John Tobias
spell their last names backwards and you get........
Noob Saibot :D
Interesting how the clip shown at the beginning happens to be from the worst port of MK3!
this is where the name noob saibot came from. (The creators names spelled backwards
Actually, they draw the line... Boon says in the interwievs of the new MK, that all the fatalities are tested and revised, in the phase of "design"... he says: "We know when the fatality is going to far"... Tanks to the Elder Gods (XD), the line is higher than rip te arms, and use them as weapons for decapitating your oponent... O man... Thats MK.
Mortal Kombat's violence does not effect kids or our already violent society. People act like violent idiots no matter what. If adults are too offended by the game, don't buy it. And if adults and/or critics are too careless to check out the game's rating before they purchase it; it is their problem. Don't blame the creators!
Draw the line......23 years later 🤣🤣🤣
@youngcnyce over 15 years later... on one of the biggest companies of the world WARNER BROTHERS! picked up MK! and supports their violence! MORTAL KOMBAT IS COMING BACK WITH ITS OLD 2D STYLE FIGHTING WITH MORE BLOOD AND VIOLENCE FOR MK9! POSSIBLY AN ADULTS ONLY RATING THIS TIME!
Ahh good old UPN lol John Tobias looks different now, while Ed looks the same.
