Outside of flares you get from Anamorphics...just out of the box it FEELS cinematic. I got my first Anamorphic lens and it only took one day to buy the rest of the focal lengths. I always liked them for the flares, until i noticed the Bokeh - THATS what did it for me
@@BlaineWestropp1 I went budget with the Sirui Saturn line, got a 50mm to check it out. The next day bought their 35mm and 70mm. The flares were cool, but I saw what REALLY makes Anamorphic more than just that. IF you want flares? get that filter you can throw on a spherical. The Bokeh is what did it for me. The Siruis also have this character to them I cant explain. Its not the best glass in the world - but thats kinda why I like them. They can be a bit sharp, but i almost always shoot with pro-mist at a 1/4 at a minimun anyway - this paired with my FX3's - Anytime im doing a much bigger project, i bring those out
well for me personally.. I have not been a fan of pincushion, regardless of the lens. I always thought it was interesting that the Cookes have them. but yeah I feel you, some of the new anamorphics look like the Cookes on the edges
@@BlaineWestropp1 iam not a fan either, it was just my perception when i read Cooke 🙈. Don't know which movie it was but i saw one few weeks ago which had so much pincushion takes and i have to say it worked soo much better then barrel would have. So it has it place even i prefer barrel for me. Anyways, thank you as usual for a great video man 🙏
I think I definitely prefer the longer focal here, although it would interesting to see the wider lenses in an environment without the lines to see how much that distortion really distracts. Loved the city footage though dude, incredible views and atmosphere there.
Not that I'll be using a set of these anytime soon, but can you correct the pincushion on these or is the idea to lean into that look with these lenses? Gorgeous views dude!
I just bought an Arriflex 16BLEQ about a month ago and I hope you are not done shooting film yet. You gave me some valuable insight to the grading process. Shoot more film!!!
I love how people shit on lenses that showcase weird abbrations flares and distortions but then cream over anamorphic lenses. This looks great, screw perfect zero d glass.
@@BlaineWestropp1 I think for your line of work clients may be more accustomed to the clean look and you're right nothing wrong with it. I think it's more of a project to project thing really. I love Rodger deakins and his work and he always opts for the cleanest lenses. But when it's dirty 😏😏
So many people hate on pincushion and blame it on “Budget” options. Even Cooke Anamorphics have it, and in my opinion the look of these is so close to the LAOWA Nanomorph Primes and Zooms.
Hmm interesting pin cushion, I've been adding barrel distortion to my standard spherical lenses in Davinci and loving the slightly otherworldly effect it creates. I feel like there are better aftermarket ways to add barrel distortion. Do you have any preferred methods?
Lens correction in resolve does a fine job IMO. You can be more refined in after effects, but davinci is fine. And yes the cookes have belle pincushion. They are nice tho.. but I am a barrel distortion guy at the moment.
Thanks! On camera there was a teradek bolt 3000, monitor was a smallhd 703 with bolt receiver. Focus was my trusty PDmovie thumb wheel that I clamped to the monitor handle :) I am not positive if they make the same unit anymore.
@@BlaineWestropp1 yeh looking to pull focus on the receiver monitor I think, not sure on the latency, I doubt I would need zero latency, lower is always better though! I’m new to this kind of thing (bigger manual lenses etc) was considering the DJI stuff, follow focus + monitor/wireless setup but I admit I haven’t done a tonne of research
the look is nice, but the pincushion kind of ruins it. I know it can be corrected in post, but seems like an odd thing to need to do when dealing with high end glass.
I did recently. I used anamorphic for the majority of the project, and there were some super close shots of faces that we were capturing that I used a 135mm spherical lens with diopters. This was purely based on the fact that I liked how the face/eye closeups looked on that combo. I also very much like wider anamorphics, and find that the tighter shots being spherical can fit within a piece that has wider shots on anamorphic.
pincushion distortion has its own gravitational pull with this one
yeah the pincushion is wild on these.
@@BlaineWestropp1 very interesting that cooke chose pincushion over barrel, probably had to compromise due to the lenses being full frame and 1.8x
@@lensbokeh_ yea it is an interesting choice for sure.
can't help it but i hate pincushion.....it somehow looks so cheap imo. Like a lens distortion effect done in post to do a zoom-in effect
That view though. Wow.
So good!
When the rig and the lens set cost more than the whole condo.
Stunning views btw, love the 100mm look too.
The rig was beefy. These lenses are also wildly massive. I like the 100mm as well!

Alexa mini LF!

yeah the longer lenses were looking nice here! NYC is wild, and changes so fast!

the 85mm is perfect. The 135mm is pretty sharp too, was the skyline shot through a window?
Man I came here to say the same thing. That 85 is like the sweet spot!!!
Not sure I like the pincushion compared to barrel, but the footage is lovely, and I agree the longer lens look better.
I also prefer barrel. I’d consider doing another test with a smaller cut of the sensor to crop away a bit of that pincushion.
85mm lens looks os good in video and photography its crazy
That and the last one may have been my favs!
