I just ordered a top bar hive today. Hope to be all set up and better educated by spring when I plan to get my bees. Watching another beginner is encouraging.
Did my first apiary visit her in Scotland just last weekend. An amazing experience getting to learn about the bees, the hives, all the crazy equipment and clothing, the different bee roles and how hives are formed, divided and maintained throughout the seasons. Awesome stuff but SO MUCH to learn before I'm ready to dive in... Hopefully next year when I'm not learning quite so much (fingers crossed) on the livestock front by then. J W ...you can still keep learning while you have bees, there’s no reason to delay getting bees. Add to your bee equipment but a bee veil and smoker are 2 items to start with . Hive tool for frames coul be just a screw driver to move frames for now otherwise your set to enjoy bees. 👍
Well, since I’m not going into the honey business, I opted for a top bar hive. I’m going for the joy. Besides that, as a small woman, I don’t have the physical strength for handling the Langstroth hives. After years of dreaming about bee keeping, I couldn’t put it off any longer. (I’m 75 😳) I’m going for it and I’m excited. I started trying to build a top bar hive, but I needed help to build a window. I finally decided to buy one and I’ll finish the other without a window. By the time I need it, I should know a little more about what I’m doing. I have a bee keeper friend around the way, but I hope to educate myself as much as I can before I call on him. Anyway, seeing another beginner at work is encouraging.
Are there any issues with using pressure treated wood for the legs? I have built one in the past and used roofing tar on the bottom half of the legs for protection from the element. I was worried PT may harm the bees?
Love your videos! I want to learn about top bar bees too. Please keep us up to date. I have 4 swarm traps out there and built a top bar hive. Just waiting for the swarm. I'm a newbee at this too.
I have had bees with mixed success in the past. I haven't had them for a few years and am getting the itch again. It's like a drug. I am considering Saskatraz and Warre hives. I haven't tried them yet. I have always built all my own hives so I'm kind of excited about it. I'm in ND so wintering is a challenge. If I lose bees it's always in the spring.
Bee are not livestock just because someone at Agriculture says so does not mean it true. You cannot contain bees, if they decide to leave they will unlike cattle and other livestock that you can contain them and make them do and go where you want... that is live stock

You will get more Honey with a Langstroth Hive but you'll get more joy with the TopBar Hive. So it will depend what your goal is.

Nice one John, you will have so much fun with your bees. I started with Warre hives then switched to Langstroth
