The lack of greenery is what is causing this heat!! This is a tropical country but there is so little greenery. Everyone builds by clearing all the trees , bushes and grass and covering the whole area with concrete !! Here in the US I have more trees grass , shrubs surrounding my house than in the whole area I have a house in Ghana !! Plant some trees or bushes around your house .
Very true. However, the maintenance of the greenery is another issue, especially for city trees if they are planted. The local government, would they maintain these things with a budget? That's the issue imo.
Yeah, it will be good to get those tall & slender trees that go high up, without taking too much space. Placing trees a few feet away from the wall will prevent anyone getting over electric wiring onto the trees. And to use stepping “stones” in a lawn around the house, with potted plants - will avoid having a concrete jungle on the premises.
You are so right. When I first bought the land there was trees I was trying to keep and they cried and cried saying they are junk trees and how they are ugly. I was thinking about shade. I do have to mango trees in the front that puts off good shade but on this side of the house I have nothing oo there is surely a lack of greenery around because like you say “everyone clears the plot of everything” 😔
That's one factor but the materials are a major cause... Concrete and cement store heat... Best is clay and wood which dissipate heat... Also we have low ceilings... We need to have high ceilings and large windows...
You stated something significant. I sat in my open plot for one week straight figuring out how the sun traveled through the sky and the wind factor coz friend the sun in East African coast will melt your soul! This fact alone made me build an L shape house with vented corridors leading to the bedrooms. I also made my walls higher than usual. Am hitting 15ft at the highest point and that wind tunnel is beautiful!
@ corridor aka verandah that leads to my bedrooms. I used airflow blocks instead of solid blocks to allow wind flow into the house from that direction. So one side of my house is made entirely of the block vents. It’s hard to describe without you seeing an actual photo of what am saying.
I moved from a place with louvre blade windows to one with sliding windows and the heat has been cooking me such that I leave the windows and doors open whenever I am at home even at nighttime. I need some additional cooling system in addition to ceiling fans. It means my electricity bill will kind of quadruple. I have plans to supplement energy need with some solar powered gadgets.
Well, I can say your idea of putting a shade at that side of the house is a good. It gets hot from Nov to April. Also, concerning the prepaid, it would be sorted out under the incoming admin. The meters especially the new ones were deliberately set to run. There is a whole scandal of corruption coming out soon with accountability but I digress. Plant trees to give shade around. For me, my living room and dinning is the hottest because we have no trees providing shade on that part. Welcome back
There is a giant floor ac unit I want to put in my big living room. You mean they will be set to run faster to take more money? 😮 thanks, it feels great to be back.
@webelonginafrica44 You can go head an install the AC. I was giving you the reason the prepaid runs. The out going VP made a shady deal and is responsible for bringing the new meter which many complained runs which would cause you to purchase more quickly. I use the old one and it also runs at times. The was a system error in software and administrative challenges. So it doesn't read when it is supposed to then when it does it just pulls a chuck of your credit. Plus we are aware of the fraudulent act in revenue collecting on the hubtel app which the outgoing VP had something to do with. Basically siphoning monies for their own interest. Post Jan 07 you would see the rot that comes out of this administration. However, go ahead and install the AC. All these problems would be settled by the new administration because they have been tried and tested hence why they won the elections massively. The election was a referendum on the out going government.
The heat in some of the rooms took me by surprise as the others stay cool. Our blinds stay closed & fans stay on! You're right, the bills are not a joke 😬
Yes some walls get really hot depending on what side of the house they are on. I wish my master bedroom was on the other side. My fan stay on also. I don’t see how people stay inside when there are lights out. I can be in a deep sleep and when the lights go off I immediately wake up because it instantly gets hot.
The reason why the room does not stay cool even with the AC is because in Ghana when the guys install the windows they do not put brushes, leaf stoppers and sealant in the windows so there are leakes of air pockets on the sides and bottom of the windows because they are not air tight enough. So you would have to get some window shades for now since your windows are all done at this point. When it comes to the windows you have to tell the guys who fix it to add the brushes, rubber stoppers, leaf stoppers and sealant which are added cost so most people don’t add that to the windows so the guys who do the windows will not add it if you don’t ask for it when they install them. A good window fabrication experts will add that to the window when they are installing them and the difference is like night and day. So in the second building you are doing next to your house, ask the company or people who come to fix your windows what I just described to you and if they are good at their job will include that at an added cost to the bill but you will see the difference. With the proper windows installation it also prevents dust and small wall lizards from entering your room. I hope this helps. I am currently building in Accra and at the window installation stage and when the company came for the cost estimate they asked me about what I just described to you and the difference in cost with and without them plus the education about the advantages and disadvantages of not doing them, and that is when I realized the window company knew their job.😀😀because I had no idea that existed. So trust me if you don’t know, they will not do it and the end result is what you are facing. Have a blessed week and shalom to you.
Thanks a lot and yes the windows on my house don’t have the seals you speak of. I plan on taking them all off and getting new ones. But the way the heat comes off of the wall during the day even with the good windows I will suffer. I have a nightstand on side of my bed and when I put a bottle of water on it the heat from the wall makes it hot enough to drop a tea bag inside of it 😂
You need to plant trees around the property. Also you should get an inverter split AC system and leave it in Auto. DONT turn the AC off even when you not at the house. Once the AC cools to the temperature set, The AC will go in sleep mode and kick back on when temperature rise in the room. Turning the AC off and kicking it back on sucks a lot of power and the AC has to work harder to cool the space. You might have to invest in solar panels i. GHANA as well cause power tend to go out.

Ok Here We Go.. I Hope You Read This.. First Things First... Your Going To (HAVE TO) Paint The OUTSIDE Of Your Home (WHITE).. You See? The Color (WHITE) Repels Heat From The Sun.. And? Since You Don't Have Shade Trees? That's The First Thing You Should Do.. SIDE NOTE: {ALL EARTH TONE COLORS ABSORB HEAT}... 😲😲😲 Yep.. And Looking At Your Home? That Earth Tone Color Is Absorbing A LOT Of Heat.. Which Goes Through The Walls, And Heats The Inside Of Your Home Like An Oven.. That's Why Your Air Conditioner Seems Like It's Not Working During The Daylight Hours.. 🤔🤔🤔 Secondly? Since Your Worried About The Electric Bill? You're Also Going To Need SOLAR VENTS In Your Roof.. Probably Over Each Room.. That Way? The Heat Inside Your Home Is Pulled Out Through The Vents On The Roof.. {HEAT RISES..) So By The Time The Heat, Heats Up Your Entire Home? YOU ARE BASICALLY IN A HOUSE SIZE OVEN.. SOLAR VENTS Aren't Expensive, And Very Easy To Install.. Doing These Simple Things? Will Lower The HEAT In Your Home Substantially.. And? Your Air Conditioners Should Make It Feel A Whole Lot More Comfortable.. Insulation Would Work Because It Helps Keep The Heat And Cool Air Inside.. But Since You Have That Basics.. Following My Suggestions Should Work Just Fine.. Here Are What Solar Vents Look Like In This UA-cam Video.. If You Don't Install Them Yourself? You Should Be Able To Get Some One To Install Them For You.. But For Now? Just Keep The Top Part Of Your Windows Open To Allow The Heat To Escape.. Well That It Good Luck.. 🤔🤔🤔
Secondly?
Because We Belong In Mother Africa... ua-cam.com/video/KFOnMXVIDh8/v-deo.html
